• Rationale behind freeware projects

  I've seen some freeware projects in the past where the author(s) invested a significant amount of their personal time and resources and never even considered charging for the software. A lot of these projects were donation based, and from what I've heard, donationware can never be a viable business model (even to simply support development costs) because most people choose not to donate if given an option. A lot of these projects eventually shut down because their authors could not sustain them further. Granted, some people simply like making the community happy (or something), but if you're struggling to keep your project alive, why not charge some small amount such as $10 simply to stay operational? If people find your software useful (and a lot of people found those projects VERY useful) they won't have a problem paying such a small amount. The question is: if you have a popular app that people like and download in great numbers, why not put a price tag on it? Why do it for free?

  For instance, I was making my first mobile web-application about a year ago, and half-way through, someone pointed me to jQuery Mobile. Obviously this induced a total revolution in my app. Rewrote everything. Now, if you're in the field long enough, maybe that seems like common knowledge, but I was totally new to it. But this set me wondering: there are so many libraries and extensions and frameworks. This seems particularly crucial in the category of security. I'm afraid I'm going to find myself doing something in a professional setting eventually (I'm still a student) and someone's going to walk over and be like, My god, you're trying to secure user data that way? Don't you know about the Gordon-Wokker crypto-magic-hash-algorithms library? Without it you may as well go plaintext. How do you know what the best ways are to maximize security? Especially if you're trying to develop something on your own...

  I have a great idea for smartphone application, And I want to develop an application suited for both android and iPhone. In addition I need to use spatial database for geo indexing that will be shared for both applications. I am new to this app world and I have some questions. Is there away to develop for both machines? I know java but not objective c. My guess is that I need to separate the database from the computing to support both applications. What are the best cloud computing providers with spatial database support that can host the server? Do I need 2 hosting servers or there is one server the can support the both of them? which database provider can support geo indexing and support this intergraion, I prefer providers with reasonable free quotas. • How do I improve my ability to manipulate code quickly, not wpm?

  I have seen several questions on here about touch typing and words per minute but not about improving ones ability to manipulate text using keyboard shortcuts, bindings etc. I have tried putting a cheat sheet of keyboard shortcuts next to my monitor but I can never incorporate them in my 'flow'. I have also tried the 'just use vi and don't touch the mouse' method but that only helps me with navigating code and not editing. I would prefer to use some application (or game) to learn text manipulation. But it looks like nothing like that exists (app idea?). I'm open to other suggestions too.

  So I'm working on this code browser mostly to help me with my fading memory. In the app I want to be able to launch a url. I end up copying a design and with a crappy one. I am a student in San Jose, CA, and will be working from next month on Java most probably. • What happened to GremCheck? Is there a viable replacement?

Thanks!] Hi all, I was a big fan of an app called "GremCheck" that was out a while back, that seems to have disappeared. It was a JavaScript included in a master page that placed an icon at the bottom of the page. It was used during testing. You could define your own tests, and the box could pop up per page and viewers would answer the questions you define (such as "Does this page have the correct title?", "Is the Grammar Correct", "Does the design look consistent"). This was useful for end-user tests groups and quick testing for developers if time was squeezed on full functional testing. Anyone know where GremCheck went, if I can get to it, and if there's anything out there that does something similar? Thanks for any help you can give!

• 'Situations gone wrong' for web apps...

  Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). So can you guys tell me about 'situations gone wrong' that could have been avoided had more consideration taken place? • Loud fans despite cool system under Linux (but not Windows)

  My new desktop computer runs almost silently under Windows, but the fans seem to run on a constantly high setting under Linux. Psensor shows that the GPU (with NVidia drivers) is thirty-something degrees and the CPU is about the same, so it's not just down to Linux somehow being more processor-intensive. I've read that the BIOS controls the fans under Linux, which makes sense given the high fan speeds when in BIOS as well. It's under Windows, when the ASUS AI Suite 3 software seems to take control, that the system runs more quietly and only speeds the fans up when required. So is there a Linux app which offers a similar dynamic control of the fans, or a setting hidden somewhere in the ASUS BIOS which allows the same but regardless of the OS? EDIT - I've tried using lm-sensors and fancontrol, but pwmconfig tells me "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed". This is after the sensors-detect command does find an 'Intel digital thermal sensor', and despite the sensors working fine in apps like psensor. Help getting this to work would likely solve the problem.

• Techniques and methods to improve and speedup development

  I just got a new project. It’s a WinForm app. And it’s interesting because I will have the possibility to learn how fish farms work and are managed. I will have to develop touch interfaces, and use datasnap to communicate and sync data between farm and office. The development will be done in DELPHI win32, still not sure about the database, but maybe SQLlite. So now comes the difficult part of the project, building it. I am just finishing one. It took me a lot of time to do it and I am a bit “burned out”. I will have time to relax, not much, but a few days. What I am looking is some tips and tricks and possibly tools to be able to speed up the development. It must be up and running in 2 months. So what tricks do you use to speed up things?

  Windows died. So, I installed ubuntu, and have had difficulties downloading apps from the internet like skype or realplayer... etc. And It does not recognize my password. I needed to install drivers for my wireless from cd-rom. It does not show where to save new downloaded files and programs, and app and does not show how to install like windows does. So I would like to go back to windows. Window does not not start up anymore and I can not get safe mode with F8. It goes to black screen only and none of other parameters work when press f8! Any help is highly valued.

I would really like to start writing apps using MVC, but they fear any type of change. How is the best way to convince/ease them into using MVC? I guess this can go for moving to any new technology.   I want to create an application and maybe upload it to the play store but I am not sure if that what my app does is legal or not. I am downloading a page's source from a website to get some information I need. For example if I download a page about the song "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin and parse this page source to get the song's name, maybe a link to an image and the lyrics. Would that be illegal or can I display these information to my users without getting any problem? Also the website says it's an "open 'wiki-style' [...].It's completely user built by people like you and used every day by fans and developers alike."

  I'm just wondering whether to keep some of my variables in Constants class or keep it in web.xml Say, I want to keep a variable of Facebook graph API prefix or api_key, client_id From my understand, the difference between Constants.java and web.xml is web.xml is easier to rewrite on compile using ant. So, you can replace your variables in web.xml according to what environment you are building you app for. (client_id varies by development environment/production environment, for example) If I understand it right, then Facebook graph API prefix should be kept in Constants.java (because it always is "https://graph.facebook.com/") and api_key, client_id should be kept in web.xml? What's the proper way to use them?

• Arguments for or against using Try/Catch as logical operators

  I just discovered some lovely code in our companies app that uses Try-Catch blocks as logical operators. Meaning, "do some code, if that throws this error, do this code, but if that throws this error do this 3rd thing instead". It uses "Finally" as the "else" statement it appears. I know that this is wrong inherently, but before I go picking a fight I was hoping for some well thought out arguments. And hey, if you have arguments FOR the use of Try-Catch in this manner, please do tell. EDIT For any who are wondering, the language is C# and the code in question is about 30+ lines and is looking for specific exceptions, it is not handling ALL exceptions.

  I don't have any experience writing .sh files. I want to run the pvm2raw utility of this app from the Volume Library. • Is it important to obfuscate C++ application code?

  In the Java world, it seems to sometimes be a problem, but, what about C++? Are there different solutions? I was thinking about the fact that someone can replace the C++ library of a specific OS with a different version of the same library, but full of debug symbols to understand what my code does. IS tt a good thing to use standard or popular libraries? This can also happen with some dll library under Windows replaced with the "debug version" of that library. Is it better to prefer static compilation? In commercial applications, I see that for the core of their app they compile everything statically and for the most part the dlls (dynamic libraries in general) are used to offer some third party technologies like anti-piracy solutions (I see this in many games), GUI library (like Qt), OS libraries, etc. Is static compilation the equivalent to obfuscation in the Java world? In better terms, is it the best and most affordable solution to protect your code?

  Sometimes I need to move an url from an app to a browser. I select the url, say in gvim, and make Firefox window active. Then I see that I should clear address bar before pasting the new url, which requires selecting existing url, which wipes the new url from PRIMARY clipboard out. What is the best way to put the new url from PRIMARY clipboard to address bar? Is there a shortcut to clear address bar and then to move focus there? ps I know I can use Ctrl-C to put the new url to CLIPBOARD clipboard, but I prefer to use PRIMARY clipboard.

• Sending files via HTTP to web service

  I am bit frustrated at the lack of information about this online. Here is the issue: I am in charge of creating a iOS application which sends sound data back and forth between the server and the app. The Audio is in small files and thus does not need to be streamed over, but rather it can be sent. Right now, I am using a TCP server I wrote to handle applications like this. However, I want to keep the system as simple as possible and writing your own server and client sockets can get a bit complex and leaves room for crashes. Overall it slows down development because I need to account for packet structure and other things. My question is, can I write an ASPX or PHP web service that lets me pass the files back and forth through GET or POST?
