• What is a better abstraction layer for D3D9 and OpenGL vertex data management?

  My rendering code has always been OpenGL. I now need to support a platform that does not have OpenGL, so I have to add an abstraction layer that wraps OpenGL and Direct3D 9. I will support Direct3D 11 later. TL;DR: the differences between OpenGL and Direct3D cause redundancy for the programmer, and the data layout feels flaky. For now, my API works a bit like this. This is how a shader is created: Shader *shader = Shader::Create( " ... GLSL vertex shader ... ", " ... GLSL pixel shader ... ", " ... HLSL vertex shader ... ", " ... HLSL pixel shader ... "); ShaderAttrib a1 = shader->GetAttribLocation("Point", VertexUsage::Position, 0); ShaderAttrib a2 = shader->GetAttribLocation("TexCoord", VertexUsage::TexCoord, 0); ShaderAttrib a3 = shader->GetAttribLocation("Data", VertexUsage::TexCoord, 1); ShaderUniform u1 = shader->GetUniformLocation("WorldMatrix"); ShaderUniform u2 = shader->GetUniformLocation("Zoom"); There is already a problem here: once a Direct3D shader is compiled, there is no way to query an input attribute by its name; apparently only the semantics stay meaningful. This is why GetAttribLocation has these extra arguments, which get hidden in ShaderAttrib. Once the vertex buffers have been filled with or pointed at data, this is the rendering code: shader->Bind(); shader->SetUniform(u1, GetWorldMatrix()); shader->SetUniform(u2, blah); decl->Bind(); decl->SetStream(vb1, a1, a2); decl->SetStream(vb2, a3); decl->DrawPrimitives(VertexPrimitive::Triangle, NUM / 3); decl->Unbind(); shader->Unbind(); You see that decl is a bit more than just a D3D-like vertex declaration, it kinda takes care of rendering as well. Does this make sense at all? What would be a cleaner design? Or a good source of inspiration?

• When to use HTTP status code 404 in an API

  I am working on a project and after arguing with people at work for about more than a hour. I decided to know what people on stack-exchange might say. We're writing an API for a system, there is a query that should return a tree of Organization or a tree of Goals. The tree of Organization is the organization in which the user is present, In other words, this tree should always exists. In the organization, a tree of goal should be always present. (that's where the argument started). In case where the tree doesn't exist, my co-worker decided that it would be right to answer response with status code 200. And then started asking me to fix my code because the application was falling apart when there is no tree. I'll try to spare flames and fury. I suggested to raise a 404 error when there is no tree. It would at least let me know that something is wrong. When using 200, I have to add special check to my response in the success callback to handle errors. I'm expecting to receive an object, but I may actually receive an empty response because nothing is found. It sounds totally fair to mark the response as a 404. And then war started and I got the message that I didn't understand HTTP status code schema. So I'm here and asking what's wrong with 404 in this case? I even got the argument "It found nothing, so it's right to return 200". I believe that it's wrong since the tree should be always present. If we found nothing and we are expecting something, it should be a 404. More info, I forgot to add the urls that are fetched. Organizations /OrgTree/Get Goals /GoalTree/GetByDate?versionDate=... /GoalTree/GetById?versionId=... My mistake, both parameters are required. If any versionDate that can be parsed to a date is provided, it will return the closes revision. If you enter something in the past, it will return the first revision. If by Id with a id that doesn't exists, I suspect it's going to return an empty response with 200. Extra Also, I believe the best answer to the problem is to create default objects when organizations are created, having no tree shouldn't be a valid case and should be seen as an undefined behavior. There is no way an account can be used without both trees. • Security Controls on data for P6 Analytics

  The Star database and P6 Analytics calculates security based on P6 security using OBS, global, project, cost, and resource security considerations. If there is some concern that users are not seeing expected data in P6 Analytics here are some areas to review: 1. Determining if a user has cost security is based on the Project level security privileges - either View Project Costs/Financials or Edit EPS Financials. If expecting to see costs make sure one of these permissions are allocated.  2. User must have OBS access on a Project. Not WBS level. WBS level security is not supported. Make sure user has OBS on project level.  3. Resource Access is determined by what is granted in P6. Verify the resource access granted to this user in P6. Resource security is hierarchical. Project access will override Resource access based on the way security policies are applied. 4. Module access must be given to a P6 user for that user to come over into Star/P6 Analytics. For earlier version of RDB there was a report_user_flag on the Users table. This flag field is no longer used after P6 Reporting Database 2.1. 5. For P6 Reporting Database versions 2.2 and higher, the Extended Schema Security service must be run to calculate all security. Any changes to privileges or security this service must be rerun before any ETL. 6. In P6 Analytics 2.0 or higher, a Weblogic user must exist that matches the P6 username. For example user Tim must exist in P6 and Weblogic users for Tim to be able to log into P6 Analytics and access data based on  P6 security.  In earlier versions the username needed to exist in RPD. 7. Cache in OBI is another area that can sometimes make it seem a user isn't seeing the data they expect. While cache can be beneficial for performance in OBI. If the data is outdated it can retrieve older, stale data. Clearing or turning off cache when rerunning a query can determine if the returned result set was from cache or from the database.

• I'm creating my own scalable, rapid prototyping web server. How should I design it?

  I'm going to create my own web server that focuses on scalability, rapid prototyping and the use of JavaScript as the server's scripting language, much like node.js. It will use a Model-View-Controller design pattern so a web application can support more concurrent users just by adding hardware -- and not having to redesign the software. Basically, I'm aiming to produce a framework that allows for fast and easy development of cloud applications without the need to write lots of boiler plate code. I've got some questions about this... How hard will it be to put MySQL in the cloud? How could I go about implementing this and make the resulting product free? Will I have to write my own engine or modify an existing one, if I do what should I watch out for? To make this scalable I need to adjust from one server to hundreds of servers this creates the requirement for the servers to be load balancing, how should I do this? If I balance based on the work load per server I would need gateway to handle all the incoming requests. Is it the right idea to have all the servers check into the gateway and update there status. By having the servers run through a gateway if the gateway dies all the incoming requests are ignored. I'm thinking that having all the servers maintain a list of each other, or at least a few I could rebuild the list of servers and establish a new gateway. Is it worth it? Or should I have a backup gateway that could switch out? Should I let the user choose? How should I pick which server handles the database and which handles the page serving? Should I spread the database so that queries are preformed on multiple servers? Which would theoretically improve performance. The servers would need to mirror the database at least once so that if a server goes down the database isn't corrupted. So this brings up writing another question, should I broadcast SQL queries so that all the servers can take a bit of the work load? If I do it that way wouldn't a query clog up the network so that other queries couldn't be preformed? What are my alternatives? Finally, is there a free solution already out there that might need a little modification that suits my needs?

• Increasing deadlocks with NoLock

  One on my personnel pet issues is with inappropriate use of the NOLOCK hint (and read uncommitted) .  Dont get me wrong, I have used it in exceptional circumstances , but as a general statement it is a bad thing.  Mostly , when NOLOCK, is used the discussion is around a single statement,  “it runs faster with nolock for XYZ reason”,  however ,IMO, this is quite a shorted sighted view.  What about the Transaction ? What about other concurrent users ?  What is good for one statement in isolation , does not mean that it is good for the system as a whole.  I have seen on a number of occasions deadlocks happen, when tasks that would of(and should of) be blocked continue to execute, only for a deadlock to occur at a later data writing (INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE) statement.  Writers will block writers regardless of isolation level. By Way of (fairly contrived ) example , lets generate some dummy tables and populate with some data drop table a go drop table b go Create Table a ( col1 integer ) go insert into a values(1) insert into a values(2) go Create Table b ( col1 integer ) go insert into b values(1) insert into b values(2) go   Now make two connections. In connection one execute set transaction isolation level read committed BEGIN TRAN Select * from a Select * from b delete from a In connection two execute set transaction isolation level read committed BEGIN TRAN Select * from a Select * from b delete from b Right now the ‘select from a’ in connection two is being blocked by the ‘delete from a’ in connection one.  This is ,IMO, quite a healthy and natural thing to be happening , some see this as a ‘slow down’, a drop in performance.  So, lets reach for our ‘NOLOCK’ magic pill.  Cancel the blocked query and ROLLBACK both transactions, then in connection one execute set transaction isolation level read uncommitted BEGIN TRAN Select * from a Select * from b delete from b and then in connection two execute set transaction isolation level read uncommitted BEGIN TRAN Select * from a Select * from b delete from a We have now solved out performance problem , no more blocking.  Lets finish the work required by the transaction, in connection one , execute delete from a Oh, ‘ performance problem’ again , its now being blocked. Still, lets complete the work in connection two…. delete from b DEADLOCK!!  It is important to be clear about the role of the select statements.  They do not participate within the deadlock, but are preventing code executing that would of.   Additionally, without the select readers to block, a deadlock would occur on the deletes with READ COMMITTED. Naturally, other isolation levels will exhibit different behaviour as to where and when they will and wont block,  and I would encourage you to read BOL and satisfy yourself that you really do NEED to NOLOCK.

  I should preface this by saying that I'm mostly a front end web developer, trained as a musician, but over the past few years I've been getting more and more into computer science. So one idea I have as a fun toy project to learn about data structures and C programming was to design and implement my own very simple database that would manage an adjacency list of posts. I don't want SQL (maybe I'll do my own query language? I'm just having fun). It should support ACID. It should be capable of storing 1TB let's say. So with that, I was trying to think of how a database even stores data, without regard to data structures necessarily. I'm working on linux, and I've read that in that world "everything is a file," including hardware (like /dev/*), so I think that that obviously has to apply to a database, too, and it clearly does--whether it's MySQL or PostgreSQL or Neo4j, the database itself is a collection of files you can see in the filesystem. That said, there would come a point in scale where loading the entire database into primary memory just wouldn't work, so it doesn't make sense to design it with that mindset (I assume). However, reading from secondary memory would be much slower and regardless some portion of the database has to be in primary memory in order for you to be able to do anything with it. I read this post: Why use a database instead of just saving your data to disk? And I found it difficult to understand how other databases, like SQLite or Neo4j, read and write from secondary memory and are still very fast (faster, it would seem, than simply writing files to the filesystem as the above question suggests). It seems the key is indexing. But even indexes need to be stored in secondary memory. They are inherently smaller than the database itself, but indexes in a very large database might be prohibitively large, too. So my question is how is I/O generally done with large databases like the one I described above that would be at least 1TB storing a big adjacency list? If indexing is more or less the answer, how exactly does indexing work--what data structures should be involved?

Information Centers use widgets to aggregate knowledge content, such as support documents, product documentation, support community threads, which is pertinent to a given task or intent. Widgets either contain static lists or better still some widgets are dynamic. A dynamic widget uses a query criteria to present a list of support documents relevant to the title / subject matter of the widget. The content of a dynamic widget is refreshed automatically every 24 hours. Once you are in an Information Center, you can use the left hand menu to navigate to other Tasks / Intent Information Centers (e.g "Install and Configure", "Patch", "Troubleshoot", "Upgrade" which are available for the chosen product. Are Information Centers easy to find? You can go straight to the new "Reviewing Security" Information Center by using the hyperlink given above. There are, however, two other methods which make Information Centers easier to find. Browse Knowledge Refine Your Search Browse Knowledge The "Browse Knowledge" is currently found in the "Knowledge" Tab Page in My Oracle Support.   On my last post, I introduced the PredicateEqualityComparer and a Distinct extension method that receives a predicate to internally create a PredicateEqualityComparer to filter elements. Using the predicate, greatly improves readability, conciseness and expressiveness of the queries, but it can be even better. Most of the times, we don’t want to provide a comparison method but just to extract the comaprison key for the elements. So, I developed a SelectorEqualityComparer that takes a method that extracts the key value for each element. • How to handle lookup data in a C# ASP.Net MVC4 application?

  I am writing an MVC4 application to track documents we have on file for our clients. I'm using code first, and have created models for my objects (Company, Document, etc...). I am now faced with the topic of document expiration. Business logic dictates certain documents will expire a set number of days past the document date. For example, Document A might expire in 180 days, Document 2 in 365 days, etc... I have a class for my documents as shown below (simplified for this example). What is the best way for me to create a lookup for expiration values? I want to specify documents of type DocumentA expire in 30 days, type DocumentB expire in 75 days, etc... I can think of a few ways to do this: Lookup table in the database I can query New property in my class (DaysValidFor) which has a custom getter that returns different values based on the DocumentType A method that takes in the document type and returns the number of days and I'm sure there are other ways I'm not even thinking of. My main concern is a) not violating any best practices and b) maintainability. Are there any pros/cons I need to be aware of for the above options, or is this a case of "just pick one and run with it"? One last thought, right now the number of days is a value that does not need to be stored anywhere on a per-document basis -- however, it is possible that business logic will change this (i.e., DocumentA's are 30 days expiration by default, but this DocumentA associated with Company XYZ will be 60 days because we like them).   Having Red Gate's SQL Prompt installed with SQL Server Management Studio has saved me many headaches over the years of its use. It is extremely nice to type in a table name and see not only the column names, but also their data types and identification of primary keys. Another cool feature is the built-in short cut scripts that are included toward the bottom of the suggestion box. An example of these short cut scripts would be to type in the letters  cv and then hit enter and the following template for CREATE VIEW will appear: CREATE VIEW --WITH ENCRYPTION, SCHEMABINDING, VIEW_METADATA AS     SELECT /* query specification */ -- WITH CHECK OPTION GO These scripts are great, and on occasion rather humorous. Recently, I was writing an UPDATE statement that would update a derived and aliased set of data in . An example of such a statement is as follows: UPDATE y SET a.[FieldA] = b.[FieldB] FROM     (         SELECT             a.[FieldA]             ,b.[FieldB]         FROM             [MyTableA] a             INNER JOIN [MyTableB] b                 ON a.[PKA] = b.[PKB]     ) y; Upon typing the UPDATE y portion I hit enter and the expression "A A A A R G H !" appeared resulting in an unexpected burst of laughter. With a dash of curiosity and a pinch of research I discovered that at the bottom of the SQL Prompt suggestion box resides a short cut script called "yell", which is described as "Vent your frustration". Another humorous short cut script is "neo", which is described as "-- I know Kung-Fu". All is required for these to activate is to type the first letter and hit enter. I wonder if there are any undocumented ones?

• Handy SQL Server Function Series: Part 1

  I've been preparing to give a presentation on SQL Server for a while now, and a topic that was recommended was SQL Server functions.  More specifically, the lesser-known functions (like @@OPTIONS), and maybe some interesting ways to use well-known functions (like using PARSENAME to split IP addresses)  I think this is a veritable goldmine of useful information, and researching for the presentation has confirmed that beyond my initial expectations.I even found a few undocumented/underdocumented functions, so for the first official article in this series I thought I'd start with 2 of each, COLLATIONPROPERTY() and COLLATIONPROPERTYFROMID().COLLATIONPROPERTY() provides information about (wait for it) collations, SQL Server's method for handling foreign character sets, sort orders, and case- or accent-sensitivity when sorting character data.  The Books Online entry for  COLLATIONPROPERTY() lists 4 options for code page, locale ID, comparison style and version.  Used in conjunction with fn_helpcollations():SELECT *, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'LCID') LCID, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'CodePage') CodePage, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'ComparisonStyle') ComparisonStyle, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'Version') Version FROM fn_helpcollations()You can get some excellent information. (c'mon, be honest, did you even know about fn_helpcollations?)Collations in SQL Server have a unique name and ID, and you'll see one or both in various system tables or views like syscolumns, sys.columns, and INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS.  Unfortunately they only link the ID and name for collations of existing columns, so if you wanted to know the collation ID of Albanian_CI_AI_WS, you'd have to declare a column with that collation and query the system table.While poking around the OBJECT_DEFINITION() of sys.columns I found a reference to COLLATIONPROPERTYFROMID(), and the unknown property "Name".  Not surprisingly, this is how sys.columns finds the name of the collation, based on the ID stored in the system tables.  (Check yourself if you don't believe me)Somewhat surprisingly, the "Name" property also works for COLLATIONPROPERTY(), although you'd already know the name at that point.  Some wild guesses and tests revealed that "CollationID" is also a valid property for both functions, so now:SELECT *, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'LCID') LCID, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'CodePage') CodePage, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'ComparisonStyle') ComparisonStyle, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'Version') Version, COLLATIONPROPERTY(name,'CollationID') CollationID FROM fn_helpcollations() Will get you the collation ID-name link you…probably didn't know or care about, but if you ever get on Jeopardy! and this question comes up, feel free to send some of your winnings my way. :)And last but not least, COLLATIONPROPERTYFROMID() uses the same properties as COLLATIONPROPERTY(), so you can use either one depending on which value you have available.Keep an eye out for Part 2!

I just got the following window. I found only answers relating to the 'new security concept error' and 'accessing virtual host issue'. I did came across an askubuntu query, a bid similar to that of mine. It had no answers but some comments. One comment suggested to change the file permissions. It directed to get help from here. It said to change the directory permission as 755 and file permission as 644 to resolve this kind of issue. When I tried to do that, I came to know that my cgi-bin directory already had 755 permission and my sample.pl had 644 permission. I have no solutions now. • Part 1 Basic Webtrends REST Examples

  In this entry I just want to cover some examples of how to connect to Webtrends DX Web Services.  The DX Web Services use REST as the architecture, providing simple URI based end points to connect to.  With the Webtrends SDK you can connect to these services with your account information.  Here are the basic steps to retrieve a profile list, the reports from one of those profiles, and then the report you want from that report list. First step is to create a Webtrends User. WebTrends.Sdk.Account.User webtrendsUser = new Account.User(); webtrendsUser.UserName = username; webtrendsUser.Password = password; webtrendsUser.AccountName = account; After you create the Webtrends User, simple request a profile list by getting list of ProfileDefinition Objects. List<WebTrends.Sdk.Profile.ProfileDefinition> profiles = WebTrends.Sdk.Factory.NavigationFactory.BuildListing(webtrendsUser); Next you will want to grab a report based on the profile you are in and your credentials. List<WebTrends.Sdk.Report.ReportDefinition> reports = WebTrends.Sdk.Factory.NavigationFactory.BuildListing(profiles[i], webtrendsUser); In the code above, i would equate to the specific profile you want from the retrieved list of profiles in the profiles list.  The common scenario is that one has pulled the profiles into a drop down, combo, or list box that the user can select.  Then when the user selects the specific profile that profile object can then be used to pull the List of ReportDefinitions. Once we have the report definitions, all sorts of criteria can be added together to query for a specific report.  This is also were things can get a little tricky.  For instance, take a look at the code below. WebTrends.Sdk.Factory.ReportFactory.CreateDimensionalReport( report.ID.ToString(), profiles[i].ID.ToString(), "2010m01", webtrendsUser); The CreateDimensionalReport takes 4 parameters for this particular overload.  The report ID, profile ID, the Webtrends Date Format, and the Webtrends User Object.  There are a number of other overloads available within this factory's method that allow for passing the specific REST URI, and other criteria to retrieve the report of your choice.  In the near future we will be adding some more to this method also, which will provide more flexibility without needing to use the full REST URI.   I, along with Alexis's help, delivered a Java EE 6 hands-on lab to a packed room of about 40+ attendees at Devoxx 2011. The lab was derived from the OTN Developer Days 2012 version but added lot more content to showcase several Java EE 6 technologies. The problem statement from the lab document states: This hands-on lab builds a typical 3-tier Java EE 6 Web application that retrieves customer information from a database and displays it in a Web page. The application also allows new customers to be added to the database as well. The string-based and type-safe queries are used to query and add rows to the database. Each row in the database table is published as a RESTful resource and is then accessed programmatically. Typical design patterns required by a Web application like validation, caching, observer, partial page rendering, and cross-cutting concerns like logging are explained and implemented using different Java EE 6 technologies. The lab covered Java Persistence API 2, Servlet 3, Enterprise JavaBeans 3.1, JavaServer Faces 2, Java API for RESTful Web Services 1.1, Contexts and Dependency Injection 1.0, and Bean Validation 1.0 over 47 pages of detailed self-paced instructions. Here is the complete Table of Contents: The lab can be downloaded from here and requires only NetBeans IDE "All" or "Java EE" version, which includes GlassFish anyway. All the feedback received from the lab has been incorporated in the instructions and bugs filed (Updated 49559, 205232, 205248, 205256). 80% of the attendees could easily complete the lab and some even completed in much less than 3 hours. That indicates that either more content needs to be added to the lab or the intellectual level of the attendees at the conference was pretty high. I think the lab has enough content for 3 hours but we moved at a much more faster pace so I conclude on the latter. Truly a joy to conduct a lab to 40 Devoxxians! Another related lab that might be handy for folks is "Develop, Deploy, and Monitor your Java EE 6 applications using GlassFish 3.1 Cluster". It explains how: Create a 2-instance GlassFish cluster Front-end with a Web server and a load balancer Demonstrate session replication and fail over Monitor the application using JavaScript The complete lab instructions and source code are available and you can try them. I plan to continue evolving the contents for the Java EE 6 hands-on lab to cover more technologies and features and will announce them on this blog. No one would argue that brands don’t want to leave customers with this “ah” feeling. Since 94% of customers who have a low-effort service experience will buy from that company again, it makes financial sense for brands.1 Some brands are thinking differently about how they engage their customers to create ah feelings. How do they do it? Toyota is a great example of using smart assistance technology to understand customer intent and answer questions before customers hit the submit button online.
