• What is the best practise for relational database tables in mysql?

  Hi, I know, there is a lot of info on mysql out there. But I was not really able to find an answer to this specific and actually simple question: Let's say I have two tables: USERS (with many fields, e.g. name, street, email, etc.) and GROUPS (also with many fields) The relation is (I guess?) 1:n, that is ONE user can be a member of MANY groups. What I dis, is create another table, named USERS_GROUPS_REL. This table has only two fields: us_id (unique key of table USERS) and gr_id (unique key of table GROUPS) In PHP I do a query with join. Is this "best practice" or is there a better way? Thankful for any hint!

• .NET (C#): Getting child windows when you only have a process handle or PID?

  Kind of a special case problem: I start a process with System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(..) The process opens a splash screen -- this splash screen becomes the main window. The splash screen closes and the 'real' UI is shown. The main window (splash screen) is now invalid. I still have the Process object, and I can query its handle, module, etc. But the main window handle is now invalid. I need to get the process's UI (or UI handle) at this point. Assume I cannot change the behavior of the process to make this any easier (or saner). I have looked around online but I'll admit I didn't look for more than an hour. Seemed like it should be somewhat trivial :-( Thanks

  Im developing a php booking system based on timeslot for daily basis. Ive set up 4 database tables! Bookslot (which store all the ids - id_bookslot, id_user, id_timeslot) Timeslot (store all the times on 15 minutes gap ex: 09:00, 09:15, 09:30, etc) Therapist (store all therapist details) User (store all the members detail) ID_BOOKSLOT ID_USER ID_THERAPIST ID_TIMESLOT 1 10 1 1 (09:00) 2 11 2 1 (09:00) 3 12 3 2 (09:15) 4 15 3 1 (09:00) Now, my issue is, it keep showing repeation for timeslot when i want echoing the data for example: thera a thera b thera c ------------------------------------------------- 09:00 BOOKED available available 09:00 available BOOKED available 09:00 available available BOOKED 09:15 available BOOKED available as you can see, 09:00 showing three times, and i want something like below thera a thera b thera c ------------------------------------------------- 09:00 BOOKED BOOKED BOOKED 09:15 available BOOKED available There might be something wrong with joining the table or else.   Suppose I have 500 rows of data, each with a paragraph of text (like this paragraph). That's it.I want to do a search that is not only based on words. (%LIKE%, not FULL_TEXT) What would be faster? SELECT * FROM ...WHERE LIKE "%query%"; This would put load on the database server. Select all. Then, go through each one and do .find = 0 This would put load on the web server. This is a website, and people will be searching frequently.

• Why am I getting a MySQL error?

  Here is my query. Its intention is allow access to properties of the animals that constitute a match of two animals. The match table contains columns for animal1ID and animal2ID to store which animals constitute the match. SELECT id, (SELECT * FROM animals WHERE animals.id=matches.animal1ID) AS animal1, (SELECT * FROM users WHERE animals.id=matches.animalID) AS animal2 FROM matches WHERE id=5 However, MySQl returns this error: Operand should contain 1 column(s). Why? Is there an alternative way to do this, perhaps with a JOIN statement?

• MySQL: Return grouped fields where the group is not empty, efficiently

  In one statement I'm trying to group rows of one table by joining to another table. I want to only get grouped rows where their grouped result is not empty. Ex. Items and Categories SELECT Category.id FROM Item, Category WHERE Category.id = Item.categoryId GROUP BY Category.id HAVING COUNT(Item.id) > 0 The above query gives me the results that I want but this is slow, since it has to count all the rows grouped by Category.id. What's a more effecient way? I was trying to do a Group By LIMIT to only retrieve one row per group. But my attempts failed horribly. Any idea how I can do this? Thanks

• Linq - Grouping where items fall in multiple groups?

  Is it possible using Linq to create a group where items fall into more than one group? Using the following trivial example: public class Data { public string ID; public int From; public int To; } And this list: List<Data> data = new List<Data>() { new Data() { ID = "A", From = 1, To = 3 }, // Call this A new Data() { ID = "B", From = 1, To = 2 }, // Call this B new Data() { ID = "C", From = 2, To = 3 } // Call this C }; I'd like to group by each possible integer in the ranges From and To (though instead of finding the min + max I could supply the query with the range I want, for example 1 to 3), and in each group would be a reference to the Data instance where the grouping int fits in its range. Hard to explain, easier to show each group and the instances I'd expect in each: [Group 1] 1 - A, B [Group 2] 2 - A, B, C [Group 3] 3 - A, C Is this possible? Or must groups be mutually exclusive?

• jQuery: How do I insert an html string an arbitrary number of times (i.e. not with an each() function)?

  I just need to take a certain html query object and append it to an html element a lot of times. I have this: var box = $("<div class='box'>&nbsp</div>"); $("#firstbox").after(box); and it works fine, but it just adds one 'box' after the #firstbox element. I'd like to do something like this: var box = $("<div class='box'>&nbsp</div>"); $("#firstbox").after(box * 6000); so that it will insert 6000 copies of that 'box' html, but this is not working. This is I'm sure the easiest thing to do, but I can't seem to find how to multiply actions like this without using the each() function, which doesn't apply here because I don't have 6000 of anything on my page. I submitted a form, to create single row in SQL database table, as a blog entry: <p>This is a paragraph.</p> And the result, when I query it out for display, via Rails's ActiveRecord, it rendered like this, : <p>This is a paragraph.</p> and here's the code, when I view source in browser: &lt;p&gt;This is a paragraph.&lt;/p&gt; How do I solve this? Or I just have to convert the < and > by Javascript? Thank you :)

• Correcting an UPDATE statement (and making it more secure!)

  I'm trying to a single value in my DB...When I run it through the console, it works correctly (as I'm replacing the variables with numbers and text).. However, My query is not running correctly. It's just prompting a syntax error Here is what I have: "UPDATE books SET readstatus='".$readstatus."' WHERE book_id=".$book_id; This won't work, I also tried doing something like this as I'm told this makes it a bit more secure? : "UPDATE books SET readstatus='{$readstatus}', WHERE read_id='{read_id}'"; This does not prompt any errors, but no change is happeneing to the value in the DB, I'm guessing the syntax is incorrect.

• Delete rows out of table that is innerjoined and unioned with 2 others

  We have 3 tables (table1, table2, table3), and I need to delete all the rows from table1 that have the same ID in table2 OR table3. To see a list of all of these rows I have this code: ( select table2.ID, table2.name_first, table2.name_last, table2.Collected from table2 inner join table1 on table1.ID = table2.ID where table2.Collected = 'Y' ) union ( select table3.ID, table3.name_first, table3.name_last, table3.Collected from table3 inner join table1 on table1.ID = table3.ID where table3.Collected = 'Y' ) I get back about 200 rows. How do I delete them from table1? I don't have a way to test if my query will work, so I'm nervous about modifying something I found online and potentially deleting data (we do have backups, but I'd rather not test out their integrity). TIA!

• Put empty spaces in an SQL select

  I'm having difficulty creating a month-count select query in SQL. Basically, I have a list of entries, all of which have a date associated with them. What I want the end result to be, is a list containing 12 rows (one for each month), and each row would contain the month number (1 for January, 2 for February, etc), and a count of how many entries had that month set as it's date. Something like this: Month - Count 1 - 12 2 - 0 3 - 7 4 - 0 5 - 9 6 - 0 I can get an result containing months that have a count of higher than 0, but if the month contains no entries, the row isn't created. I get this result just by doing SELECT Month(goalDate) as monthNumber, count(*) as monthCount FROM goalsList WHERE Year(goalDate) = 2012 GROUP BY Month(goalDate) ORDER BY monthNumber Thanks in advance for the help!

  I have a SQLite data base which I am pulling data for a specific set of dates (lets say 01-01-2011 to 01-01-2011). What is the best way to implement this query into SQL. Ideally I would like the following line to run: SELECT * FROM database where start_date < date_stamp and end_date date_stamp This obviously does not work when I store the dates as strings. My solution (which I think is messy and I am hoping for another one) is to convert the dates into integers in the following format: YYYYMMDD Which makes the above line able to run (theoretically). IS there a better method? Using python sqlite3 Would the answer be any different if I were using SQL not SQLite

The method notifyAll() works in the same way as notify(), only it sends the signal to all of the threads waiting on the object.... Now my query is that if Lets say I have 5 threads and one main thread , so initially the main thread starts and then five other threads start , Now I want to send notification to third thread only , How could it be possible with the use of notify(), since here I am sending notification to third thread only , please advise.

• sprintf and % signs in text

  A problem I recently ran into was that when trying to update a field in my database using this code would not work. I traced it back to having a % sign in the text being updated ($note, then $note_escaped)... Inserting it with sprintf worked fine though. Should I not be using sprintf for updates, or should it be formed differently? • Problem setting up Master-Master Replication in MySQL

  I am attempting to setup Master-Master Replication on two MySQL database servers. I have followed the steps in this guide, but it fails in the middle of Step 4 with SHOW MASTER STATUS; It simply returns an empty set. I get the same 3 errors in both servers' logs. MySQL errors on SQL1: [ERROR] Failed to open the relay log './sql1-relay-bin.000001' (relay_log_pos 4) [ERROR] Could not find target log during relay log initialization [ERROR] Failed to initialize the master info structure MySQL Errors on SQL2: [ERROR] Failed to open the relay log './sql2-relay-bin.000001' (relay_log_pos 4) [ERROR] Could not find target log during relay log initialization [ERROR] Failed to initialize the master info structure The errors make no sense because I'm not referencing those files in any of my configurations. I'm using Ubuntu Server 10.04 x64 and my configuration files are copied below. I don't know where to go from here or how to troubleshoot this. Please help. • Problems configuring nameserver in plesk

  Hello, i have some troubles with setting up a nameserver in PLESK for months now. I have tried all possible scenario's but i can not get this to work. I am really in need for some help, and if you can i will really appreciate it. Basically what i want is to just set up a nameserver in PLESK. I have a primary IP, and my host gave me a secondary nameserver i can use. My host is leaseweb in the netherlands. I have made some screenshots of the important parts in my opinion, maybe you guys can see some errors in them. To use the secondary nameserver provided by leaseweb i had to enable ACL on that account, i did so and made a screenshot of that too. The DNS recursion is set to localnets. These settings have not changed for months, so the dns should be fully updated everywhere. Error: specified name server is not listed as NS record. All public name servers for a domain must also be listed as NS records in the zone of the domain. This domain was specified explicitly as a name server, but not found in the zone description of the primary name server. TE.6a rdshosting.nl. 86400 IN SOA ns1.rdspartners.nl. saif2k.hotmail.com. (2010031102 12H 1H 7D 3H) Error: the MNAME in SOA says "ns1.rdspartners.nl." is the primary name server.
