• Active Directory server down, recovering without reinstalling

  My Windows 2003 server suddenly ceased to function as a DC (this server is the only DC of the domain). All AD related services are down. The only way I can login to the AD is physically to the machine. Everytime I access an AD-related service (e.g. "AD users and computers") I get the below error: Naming information cannot be located because: The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist. Contact your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly configured and is currently online. I found the below system event which matches the time when the issue started, this re-occurs everytime I reboot the server. NTDS General | Global Catalog | Active Directory was unable to establish a connection with the global catalog. Additional Data Error value: 1355 The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Internal ID: 3200d33 I started the troubleshooting with DNS. Netdiag throws the below error although I think this is simply a consequence of not being able to access the Global Catalog. The procedure entry point DnsGetPrimaryDomainName_UTF8 could not be located in the dynamic link library DNSAPI.dll. Anyway DNS seems OK because I can ping the DC FQDN from the DC itself. I found the below solution which is supposed to help by doing some cleanup of the metadata: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498 If I follow procedure 1 here is what I get at step 9: no current site Domain - DC=<mydomain>,DC=<com> no current server no current naming context I can continue the procedure until step 14. I haven't tested step 15 as my understanding is that I will have to reinstall the whole AD again. Is there any way I can recover my AD from there without having to reinstall the whole thing? Update: Yes, the server was powered off/on because reboot would take forever (not because I thought power cycling the unit would fix it more than a reboot).

• EMERGENCY! Update Statement for critical mysql production database now running for 18 hours, need help.

  We have a table with 500 million rows. Unfortunately, one of the columns was int(11), which is a signed int, and it was an incrementing value that just rolled over the 2.1 billion magic number. This immediately caused downtime for about 10.000 users. We discussed many solutions, and decided that we could just roll back this value safely, by say, a billion. But we had to roll it back for every row. Here is what we did: update Table1 Set MessageId = case when MessageId < 1073741824 then 0 else MessageId - 1073741824 end; I tested this on a table with 10 million rows and it took 11 minutes. So I assumed the larger table would take 550 minutes, or 9 hours. This was going to be our biggest downtime in 3 years. (We're a startup). It's now going on 18 hours. What should we do? Please don't say what we should have done. I think we should have updated a few million rows at a time. Is there a way we can see progress? Could Mysql have hung? Using mysql 5.0.22. Thanks!

• Sed: Deleting all content matching a pattern

  I have some plist files on mac os x that I would like to shrink. They have a lot of <dict> with <key> and values. One of these keys is a thumbnail which has a <data> value with base64 encoded binary (I think). I would like to remove this key and value. I was thinking this could maybe be done by sed, but I don't really know how to use it and it seems like sed only works on a line-by-line basis? Either way I was hoping someone could help me out. In the file I would like to delete everything that matches the following pattern or something close to that: <key>Thumbnail<\/key>[^<]*<\/data> In the file it looks like this: // Other keys and values <key>Thumbnail</key> <data> TU0AKgAAOEi25Pqx3/ip2fak0vOdzPCVxu2RweuPv+mLu+mIt+aGtuaEtOSB ... dCBBcHBsZSBDb21wdXRlciwgSW5jLiwgMjAwNQAAAAA= </data> // Other keys and values Anyone know how I could do this? • ASA 5505 VPN setup. VPN works but still unable to reach devices in the inside network.

  I've setup a Remote Access VPN on my Cisco ASA 5505. I'm able to connect to my ASA via my phone or the Cisco client, but I'm unable to reach devices in my inside LAN when connected via VPN. The setup is the following: Inside Network : 10.0.0.0/24 VPN_POOL: 172.16.0.0/24 Outside Network: 192.168.1.0/24 ASA is not the perimeter router, there is another device on the 192.168.1.0/24 network which is connected to my cable provider. Obviously UDP port 500 and 4500 are forwarded to the ASA's outside interface. Everything works perfectly, besides the VPN stuff. • Why am I getting a Sharepoint error on a simple "hello world" web page?

  I've been granted admin access to an internal IIS server on which I need to set up a web site. Before doing anything technical I wanted to ensure that I could access the server, but when attempting to access a simple page (that does not refer to Sharepoint) at http://localhost/index.html when logged onto the server directly, I am getting Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. • Low 'Burst Rate' from SATA drive in HDTune?

  I recently upgraded my laptop's v slow hard drive to a seagate momentus 7200. Everything is working fine, but I'm a bit confused by these benchmark results: The burst rate is significantly less than the Maximim transfer rate, and not much higher than the normal minimum (if you ignore the spikes). What's going on here? On the HDtune website it defines Burst Rate as: ...the highest speed (in megabytes per second) at which data can be transferred from the drive interface (IDE or SCSI for example) to the operating system. Which begs some questions... e.g. if this is the highest, then how did the bechmarking tool record the 103MB/sec maximum? And if this really is the true maximum, then where is the bottleneck? The laptops SATA interface is on an Intel 82801GBM southbridge controller. When I check in hardware manager, I see that it's driver is iaStor.sys from 2005. Maybe that's the issue? I'll look for a newever version, but any insights would be appreciated. Thanks UPDATE: Acorting to this page on the HDTune website... An important parameter of the test is the Burst Rate. This value should always be higher than the maximum transfer rate. A lower value is usually an indication of a configuration problem. So what might be the configuration problem?

• Compare cells in two different spreadsheets and extract data from one an place it in the other if match found

  I need to find a way to compare two spreadsheets and if there is a match on specific cells, pull data from one sheet to another. Say the two spreadsheets contain a value that identifies a piece of equipment: spreadsheet 1 spreadsheet 2 Server Server Serial # 123abc 123abc 123-xx-456 There are of course many, many records/rows in each sheet. I need to look at the first cell in the server column of sheet 1 and then search a range of cells in the sever column of sheet 2 for a match. If there is a match, I need to pull the serial # value from the cell in the matching row an put it into the serial # cell of the matching row in sheet 1 (all of the "serial #" cells in sheet 1 are presently empty.) If that description explaination is too convoluted I can explain by answering any questions you may have. My deadline for this task is Noon tomorrow, 30 Aug 2012. Yes, I got the task today at noon.... I am not an Excel user and just get thrust into it on occassion... Any help would be a huge assist.

  When the backup moves the files from one to the other server the results from df changing every some seconds in impossible manner. On source host is running rsync. • What could be causing windows to fail to sleep or hibernate, and revert system settings?

  I am running Windows 8.1 on my system (Dell e6520) and the symptoms are this: My PC won't sleep or hibernate. It the screen turns off, but the fans just run and run, and after a little while, it completely shuts down, and when I start it back up, everything is closed, like it was a fresh boot/restart. I'm have a weird issue with outlook described here and the fix works fine - modifying a registry value. The weirder part is that after my computer fails to sleep or hibernate, and it starts back up, the registry value is GONE, like I never modified it, and thus the outlook error message is back. I thought maybe a graphics driver was preventing the sleep/hibernate, so I attempted to uninstall the NVIDIA graphics driver and control panel. HOWEVER, once the computer fails to sleep/hibernate, the NVIDIA graphics driver and control panel appear BACK on my system, like I didn't uninstall them. What could be happening here? I really need to be able to sleep/hibernate so I don't lose work or my work state, and these issues are really concerning. What I've tried, without success: Uninstalling graphics driver mentioned above Disabling hibernate and using sleep disabling/re-enabling hibernate Disabling startup items Sleeping as local system admin account disconnecting all USB, network, and bluetooth devices

  Help! I'm going to get fired if I can't figure out how to do this by tomorrow. Microsoft Windows stores its registry databases (known as "registry hives" - there's actually a backstory to the origin of this name, but I digress) in a proprietary binary format. Answer this correctly or you lose your job: Let H-sub-A be the registry hive of Computer A, and let H-sub-B be the registry hive of Computer B. Create a registry hive H-sub-A-prime (in the native binary format) that contains all of the registry keys and values in both H-sub-A and H-sub-B. If there is overlap, let the value from H-sub-B overwrite the value in H-sub-A. Sure, you can import a text-based patch file (e.g., "FOO.REG") to modify the registry, but can you merge two registry hives in their native binary format? Answers that involve exporting the registry to a text file (e.g., "FOO.REG") will receive no credit. You may only use software included with Microsoft Windows (any version) and / or third-party tools that are free of charge.

• Implementation of ZipCrypto / Zip 2.0 encryption in java

  I'm trying o implement the zipcrypto / zip 2.0 encryption algoritm to deal with encrypted zip files as discussed in http://www.pkware.com/documents/casestudies/APPNOTE.TXT I believe I've followed the specs but just can't seem to get it working. I'm fairly sure the issue has to do with my interpretation of the crc algorithm. The documentation states CRC-32: (4 bytes) The CRC-32 algorithm was generously contributed by David Schwaderer and can be found in his excellent book "C Programmers Guide to NetBIOS" published by Howard W. Sams & Co. Inc. The 'magic number' for the CRC is 0xdebb20e3. The proper CRC pre and post conditioning is used, meaning that the CRC register is pre-conditioned with all ones (a starting value of 0xffffffff) and the value is post-conditioned by taking the one's complement of the CRC residual.   Hi, I use in WFP Caliburn.Micro Framework. I need bindable richTextbox for Document property. I found many ways how do it bindable richTextBox. But I have one problem. From parent window I open child window. Child window consist bindable richTextBox user control. After I close child window and use memory profiler view class with bindabelrichTextBox control and view model class is still hanging in memory. - this cause memory leaks. If I use richTextBox from .NET Framework or richTextBox from Extended WPF Toolkit it doesn’t cause this memory leak problem. I can’t identified problem in bindable richTextBox class. • Trouble linking libboost libraries to compile sslsniff on RHEL

  Trying to build sslsniff on a RHEL 5.2 system here. When compiling sslsniff on RHEL I hit the same errors when using libboost packages (from repositories like rpmforge) and compiling libboost from source (which appeared to be successful.)   My app makes updates in background thread then saves context changes. And in main context there is a table view that works with NSFetchedResultsController. For some time updates work correctly, but then exception is thrown. To check this I've added NSLog(@"%@", [self.controller fetchedObjects]); to -controllerDidChangeContent:. • How can I add headers to DualList control wpf

  Hi all I am trying to write a Dual List usercontrol in wpf. I am new to wpf and I am finding it quite difficult. This is something I have put together in a couple of hours.It's not that good but a start. I would be extremely grateful if somebody with wpf experience could improve it. The aim is to simplify the usage as much as possible I am kind of stuck. I would like the user of the DualList Control to be able to set up headers how do you do that. Do I need to expose some dependency properties in my control? At the moment when loading the user has to pass a ObservableCollection is there a better way? Could you have a look and possibly make any suggestions with some code? There is more code involved for checking token validation, but in my opinion at least MEX should get published and CreateBehavior() should get invoked in order for me to proceed further.

• XSLT 1.0 recursion

  I'm stuck with recursion, was wondering if anyone can help me out with it. I have <Receipts> and <Deposits> elements, that are not verbose, i.e. that a <Receipts> element doesn't have an attribute to show what <Deposit> it is towards. I need to figure out <Deposits> "still amount due" and when a last receipt towards it was paid if any. I'm trying to do it with the following code: The idea was to take 1st deposit and see if there are receipts. If the deposit isn't fully paid and there are more receipts - call that recorsive function with all the same params except now count in following receipt. If there aren't any more receipts or deposit is payed - process it correctly (add required attributes). Otherwise proceed with 2nd deposit. And so on. However, the XSLT crashes with error message that "a processor stack has overflowed - possible cause is infinite template recursion" I would really appreciate any help/teps... I'm not that great with recursion and can't understand why mine here doesn't work.
