• Another installation is in progress

  Why I try to install any program I see "Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one." error. Googled the web and found that solution would be to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress registry key and reboot. That didn't help me unfortunately. When I open "Services" mmc snapin it shows that "Windows Installer" service is "Started", but "Start/Stop/Pause/Restart" buttons are grayed (the interesting thing is that startup type = "Manual", so I don't really know how to explain that I already have 2 instances of msiexec.exe in memory and one instance is consuming 50Mb of memory. Looks like there's a serious issue with my installer service - is there any way to fix it (please do mind - I can't install anything!) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Making Python scripts more user friendly?

  I have a bunch of python scripts I've put together that cut down on busy work, but I'd like to be able to share them in an easier-to-use format for others to be used internally. The scripts aren't accessing anything local, just open API's across a couple web apps. Ideally: a) Users wouldn't have to have a python compiler installed b) They can be using Windows when running it. c) It's simple enough they can just click something, and it will work. I've tried some of the Windows Python executable compilers, but none have really worked well and I was considering just uploading it to a webserver and putting up some basic password access protection around it Any suggestions for sharing scripts?

• How to pass a filename by drag-and-drop to a shortcut in Windows

  I have a program program.exe and a document document.txt, and to open the document, I can drag document.txt onto program.exe. So far so good. Now I want to call it with a command-line parameter -param so that the full command line is program.exe -param document.txt Unfortunately, I can't do this with drag and drop, so I need to fire up cmd and type in the command manually. This takes too long, and I need an easier way. How can I create a shortcut that I can drop the file onto, and have it call the program with the command-line parameter? I tried setting the shortcut to program.exe -param "%1", but that didn't work, because it appeared to pass only the file name, and not the path, and since the current directory was the one with the program and not the one with the document, it couldn't find the document.

• Server Fax Farm - Need suggestions, or advice

  We're Looking at creating a large fax farm via T.38 (Fax over Voip - hundreds of incoming and outgoing faxes) on linux servers, anyone have any suggestions on what is available? All my searches return using Asterisk 1.6.x with a commercial product from Digium called "Fax for Asterisk" (with required purchase of "channels" at $38.00 per channel). There must be an open source project out there I can't seem to find. Suggestions welcome! Here is some additional info: We're using Ubuntu 9.10, and planning to use T.38 If I have missed anything, let me know.

  Hi, Recently I copied few photos from my digi cam to my laptop. And what i found was, in Thumbnail view, the Image preview on the photos are different from the actual file. i.e consider if the Image preview on a file is image of a Forest, on Opening the file in Windows Fax viewer i get image of a Seashore. The Actual image is that of a seashore. But in image preview i'm getting different images. How to get rid of this.? It is really annoying. I open a file expecting a image and it turns out to be a different image. Thanks in advance

• How to stop Windows 7 from automatically connecting to unsecure wifi network

  One of my neighbors has an unsecure wifi network called WLAN. At one point in the past, I accidentally connected to it, and disconnected immediately when I noticed. Now, when I open my laptop at home, it sometimes connects to the WLAN network first, before trying my (secured) home wifi network. The information I've found regarding this issue seems to suggest this network should have a profile on the "Manage wireless networks" screen - but it does not. How do I tell Windows 7 to never connect to networks with SSIDs called WLAN? Or to never connect to unsecured networks without confirming with me first?

• Finding throuput of CPU and Hardrive on Solaris

  How do i find the throughput of a CPU and the Hardisk on an open solaris machine. Using MPstat or iostat. I'm having a hard time identifying the throughput if it is given at all in the commands output. Eg. in mpstat there is very little explanation as to what the columns mean http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-5166/mpstat-1m?l=en&a=view&q=syscl+mpstat I've been using the syscl column divided by time interval to find the throughput but to be honest i have no idea what a system call truelly is. • How to config mysql-server for heavy load

  Im in the process of setting up a new database server. I have been running a few mysql database servers before and it has been working okay. But i would like to hear the recommended setup for my server. For example, what should i set the max connection, query_cache_size, table_cache and so on. I have arround 4-600 per second: Open tables: 112 Queries per second avg: 430.386. The server i am setting it up on have the following configuration: Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-41squeeze2) 2x Intel Xeon X3440 @ 2.53GHz 4GB Ram /, /boot, /tmp etc on Software RAID1, 2x 7200RPM SATA Data location on Software RAID0, 2x7200RPM SATA Im am going to place the mysql databases on the RAID0. • Move MySQL database while instance is online

  I have a MySQL instance containing a number of databases, one of which is an archive database (although using the INNODB rather than ARCHIVE storage engine) that is not queried or written to in normal operation. The data filesystem is filling up and I'd like to move the archive database's data directory to a different filesystem (and then symlink it back, obviously). If there are no SQL statements attempting to query or update the data during the move, can I safely do this while the MySQL instance and the other databases stay online and in use? I plan to rsync the database directory to the new filesystem, then rename the old one on the original filesystem to something different and create the new symlink. lsof reports that MySQL does have the .ibd files open, so presumably it would have to reopen them.

  I am using STS2.5.5 with jdk 1.6 in my system with 32 BIT winx Xp it was working fine for few HRs when i installed it for the first time, after that when i restart STS it started showing exception Failed Initialize when i start the TC it throws hte exception error occurred during initialization of vm could not reserve enough space for object heap eclipse It is working fine in another system with same config, to resolve this if i delete STS and reinstall STS it works fine but again throws same error if i close STS and open it can anybody help me, i am also not able to change the size in my sts.ini if i increase memory and start STS then it will not start.

• Clicking hyperlinks in Email messages becomes painfully slow

  Running Windows 7 (RC, 64 bit). Suddenly, today, after months without a problem, clicking on links has become extremely slow. I've noticed this in two places. (1) clicking hyperlinks in Outlook email messages, which launches Firefox, takes around a minute. Launching Firefox by itself is instantaneous - I have an SSD drive and a very fast CPU. (2) opening Word documents attached to Outlook email messages also takes a surprisingly long time. The only thing these two might have in common is that they use the DDE mechanism, if I'm not mistaken, to send a DDE open command to the application. Under Windows XP this problem could sometimes be fixed by unchecking the "Use DDE" checkbox in the file type mapping, however, I can't find any equivalent under Windows 7. I have the following in the bash_profile: export DISPLAY=:0.0 export ORACLE_BASE=$HOME umask 022 # must match `sysctl kern.maxprocperuid` ulimit -Hu 512 ulimit -Su 512 # must match `sysctl kern.maxfilesperproc` ulimit -Hn 10240 ulimit -Sn 10240 Upon applying the bash_profile settings . ~/.bash_profile i get the following error: -bash: ulimit: max user processes: cannot be modify limit: Invalid argument This then results in $ sqlplus / as sysdba not functioning correctly with a Segmentation fault: 11 The output of $ ulimit -a core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 10240 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 1 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 512 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited If any one knows how I can apply these ulimit settings to the oracle user I have created to allow me to install sqlplus and therefore create a db, that would be great.

The specs are: 700MHz G4 640MB RAM (should be enough for anyone!) OS-X 10.3 40GB hard disc with 30GB free space I'd like a recommendataion for an office suite that will work on these old boxes. I have tried Open Office, both the latest version and 2.4.3 for PPC with no luck. Yes, I do have X11 installed.

• Disable "System Memory Testing" via OMSA 6.4.0

  Is it possible to disable system memory testing via OMSA 6.4.0? I can only find ways to do it using newer versions of OMSA; and I can't even see the setting in 6.4.0. I have quite a few machines that I want to disable this (BIOS) setting on, but I don't want to have to install the new OMSA and reboot. My intentions are to disable the setting so that when the systems are rebooted in the future, they don't need to go through the system memory testing. If it is possible to disable this another way, without OMSA or manually changing the BIOS settings, I would be open to that as well.

  As an avid user of todo apps (currently Asana) is very much miss a way to easily forward an email from Postbox to my GTD app. Currently the workflow is: Click cmd/L to open the forward email window Type [email protected] in the To: address field Click the send button in the forward email window What I would like to have is an automator or applescript that does that for me. Ex: Highligh/select the mail I wish to convert to a task in Asana and the type a shortcut like ctrl/cmd/L to forward the mail to Asana. As most todo apps have custom email addresses you can use to convert an email into a task, the only thing that needs to be changed is the email address in the script. For Asana this would not be necessary because the email address for converting an email into a taks is the same for all Asana users.

• Issue with Reporting Services - rsreportserver.config is denied

  Error message is 'd:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config' is denied.' I open SSRS configuration and I do see the service as started and running. I gave Network Services the necessary permissions in the reportserver folder and config file. SQL Server and SSRS are using LocalSystem as the 'Log On As' in Sql server configuration manager. Most of my sites I googled seem only relevant when it's Network Service running. I changed it to log on as NT Autority\NetworkService but still had the same issue. In SSRS Config Manager, I see that Web Service Identity is not configured (red), though it is showing as readonly domain\aspnet. Windows Server 2003 R2 and SSRS 2005

• USB driver problems (Windows 8.1)

  Every time I turn on my laptop the USB ports don't work and the drivers have an error. In order to fix this I'm forced to start the Device Manager, uninstall all the USB drivers, open the Control Panel, click Find and fix problems (under System and Security), click Configure a device (under Hardware and Sound) and then when that window pops up just hit Next until I can see my USB drivers reinstalled and working in the Device Manager window under Universal Serial Bus controllers. I found this way to fix it but I would like a permanent solution so that I don't have to do this every time I turn on the machine. Any ideas? When I bought the machine it had Window 7 installed but I later upgraded it to Windows 8.0 and then 8.1 after that.

• How to find which tab a particular Chrome process refers to

  I often have 6 or 7 separate Chrome windows open, often with 5-10 tabs in each. When I look at Windows Task Manager, I see each chrome.exe process, with some using a large amount of memory. How can I find which particular tab the process refers to? I want to know which one uses the most memory and close that tab instead of having to close every Chrome window. Is there any way to get this information? This is on Windows Vista, but it is the same on other versions of Windows as well.

  I like to use the Ctrl or Alt + Number shorcut to jump quickly to a specific tab. Problem is: When you have a lot of tabs open it is hard to look at them and quickly know which one is tab number 7. Is there a way (extension possibly) to show a tab's number in its title? This way each tab would have a number added to its title right beside the favicon. This way you could immediately tell which number you need to press to jump to a specific tab. I use both Chromium and Firefox, so I'm accepting answers for either one (though I'd prefer both =) ).

• Autocorrect for "fat fingers" - MS Word

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a plug-in for MS Word which can handle key-presses of surrounding keys when typing at speed (rather like iPhone or Android autocorrect)? My use case is in transcribing interviews where I need to type quickly (even with the playback at half speed) - but I don't do this often enough to become a proficient touch typist. I will also be paying close attention to the text produced in subsequent analysis so I have a reasonable expectation that I'll catch any "hilarious" autocorrect errors. Any pointers to plug-ins which work at either a system level or within MS Word would be great. Even in an open source word processor at a pinch, though I'd miss the MS Word environment and my macros. • Collaborative data modelling software?

  I'm trying to find a tool where a lot of people can work on a data model collaboratively. Embarcadero has a an ER application called ER/studio which apparently comes with a repository system that acts like typical version control software. That sounds great except ER/studio is expensive and this is a non-profit and open source organization where we encourage members to even contribute small changes. What's the best solution? Either downloadable software or a web service would work. We don't mind paying, but the cost can't go up with the number of participants...

It gives instructions to enter the following command to enable opening of Sublime in the terminal. ln -s "/Applications/Sublime Text 2.app/Contents/SharedSupport/bin/subl" /bin/subl After creating that link, it says I should be able to do subl . to open all the files in a folder in Sublime. However, when I do it, it says -bash: subl: command not found My system says the file exists ln: /bin/subl: File exists Any idea what I can do?

• VPN and Bonjour conflicting

  Does anyone know why a VPN connection might interfere with Apple's Bonjour? I've noticed that my Mac and various iDevices have trouble finding each other on my local network, when I have VPN connections open. Things like Home Sharing and Wi-Fi Sync work some of the time, but sometimes fail to find the other device. The VPN connections are made using IPSecuritas, which is a GUI around raccoon. I have the local "endpoint mode" set to Host. Apple mentions that Home Sharing may conflict with VPNs, but they don't specify why, or how to fix it. I'm using a Mac with OS 10.7.3 and IPSecuritas to connect to the VPN, an iPhone, and an iPad.
