• How to run node.js app on port 80? Are processes blocking my port?

  I believe the port 80 on my remote instance is blocked, and I am trying to run a node.js app using port 80. I have experimented with ports 3000 and 3002, and both ports are working fine, but I get an error when running on port 80. I suspect port 80 is blocked from my output of netstat -an below, but how can I find the process id's of the addresses that are blocking port 80 below? • Inconsistent black levels in windows 7 media center

  I've got a HTPC running windows 7 64bit, hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV. My problem is different types of video are displaying different black levels on the TV. When I play a bluray through Arcsoft Total Media Theater I have to set the "HDMI Black Level" to "normal" in the TV picture options menu. When I play recorded TV through WMC I have to set it to "low" otherwise the black colors on the video are washed out and grey. Is there any way to configure the system so all videos are displayed with the same black level? The hdmi black level setting is deep in Samsung's menus so it's becoming a chore to keep switching it everytime I watch a different type of video. I'm using an ATI 4670 graphics card with HDMI output going straight to the TV. In the ATI catalyst control center I've got pixel format set to RGB 4:4:4 (Full RGB) since the TV wont allow me to change the HDMI black level if I choose one of the other settings.

  I'm getting this error when trying to use xmodmap to get rid of caps lock: $ xmodmap -e 'clear Lock' X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 118 (X_SetModifierMapping) Value in failed request: 0x17 Serial number of failed request: 8 Current serial number in output stream: 8 I'm running xfce on Maverick "10.10" Meercat. This problem did not occur before I added the Keyboard Layouts applet to a panel; before doing that, I was able to run my xmodmap script to swap Esc and CapsLock: !Remap Caps_Lock as Escape remove Lock = Caps_Lock keysym Caps_Lock = Escape It may be relevant that I chose alt-capslock as the keyboard switch combo in the Keyboard Layouts preferences. I've had a similar problem before, on a different machine, running openbox. On that machine, this problem started when I upgraded to Lucid, and has persisted in Maverick (release 10.10). I reported a bug in xorg. However, it remains unclear whether it's really a problem with xorg, or if I'm just doing something wrong with my configuration. Have other people experienced this problem? Can someone shed some light on what's going on here? It seems there are quite a few layers involved, and I don't understand any of them particularly well, so any information would be helpful. update I've discovered that the problem is specifically triggered by adding the Canada layout variant "Multilingual" (ca-multix). If I instead add the variant "Multilingual (first part)", the problem does not occur. I think this will probably end up being a usable workaround, but I don't yet know what the difference between these variants is. I've filed a freedesktop issue, and am commenting on a related ubuntu issue.

This post will give you a simplified end to end view through some of the elements in Extended Events. Before we start, let’s review the first Extented Events that we are going to use: -          Events: The SQL Server code is populated with event calls that, by default, are disabled. Adding events to a session enables those event calls. Once enabled, they will execute the set of functionality defined by the session. -          Target: This is an Extended Event Object that can be used to log event information. Also it is important to understand the following Extended Event concept: -          Session: Server Object created by the user that defines functionality to be executed every time a set of events happen.   It’s time to write a small “Hello World” using Extended Events. This will help understand the above terms. We will use: -          Event sqlserver. error_reported: This event gets fired every time that an error happens in the server. -          Target package0.asynchronous_file_target: This target stores the event data in disk. -          Session: We will create a session that sends all the error_reported events to the ring buffer. • Can't log in via SSH to any accounts set to use /bin/bash as a default shell

  I'm trying to install bash as the default shell on a ARM Linux running on an embedded device (Synology DS212+ NAS). But there's something really wrong, and I can't figure out what it is. Symptoms: 1) Root has /bin/bash as default shell, and can log in normally via SSH: $ grep root /etc/passwd root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash $ ssh root@NAS root@NAS's password: Last login: Sun Dec 16 14:06:56 2012 from desktop # 2) joeuser has /bin/bash as default shell, and receives "Permission denied" when trying to log in via SSH: $ grep joeuser /etc/passwd joeuser:x:1029:100:Joe User:/home/joeuser:/bin/bash $ ssh joeuser@localhost joeuser@NAS's password: Last login: Sun Dec 16 14:07:22 2012 from desktop Permission denied, please try again. Connection to localhost closed. 3) changing joeuser's shell back to /bin/sh: $ grep joeuser /etc/passwd joeuser:x:1029:100:Joe User:/home/joeuser:/bin/sh $ ssh joeuser@localhost Last login: Sun Dec 16 15:50:52 2012 from localhost $ To make things even more strange, I can log in as joeuser using /bin/bash using the serial console (!). Also a su - joeuser as root works fine, so the bash binary itself is working fine. In an act of despair, I changed joeuser's uid to 0 on /etc/passwd, but also didn't work, so it doesn't seem to be anything permission related. Seems that bash is doing some extra checking that sshd didn't like, and blocking the connections for non-root users. Maybe some sort of sanity checking - or terminal emulation - that is triggering the SIGCHLD, but only when called via ssh. I already went through every single item on sshd_config, and also put SSHD in debug mode, but didn't find anything strange. Please consider, there can be more than one occurence of c (next to each other or not) in one tag...   I have a j2ee application hosted on jboss and linux platform. When I try to access the application , I see following error in server.log file. • XBMC DVB-T and Played Video filling screen

  I have a small PC running as an XBMC attached to a Samsung le37m87bd. The PC isn't powerful enough to output a full HD 1080 image at 1920x1080 which is the TVs native resolution (about every 1/2 a second things go extra fast, I assume skipping frames), so I want to reduce this. Annoyingly, the TV does not support any other widescreen resolutions. (720 etc) If I use a a 4:3 image, the TV stretches it to be the 16:9, however, all 16:9 content is stretched sideways as XBMC is sending out a 4:3 image with a 16:9 image inside. Is there anyway I can force XBMC to compensate for this, ie stretch vertically so that black bars are removed, but not stretched horizontally?

• Turn off Windows Defender on your builds

  I've spent some time this evening profiling a Python application on Windows, trying to find out why it was so much slower than on Mac or Linux. The application is an in-house build tool which reads a number of config files, then writes some output files. Using the RunSnakeRun Python profile viewer on Windows, two things immediately leapt out at me: we were running os.stat a lot and file.close was really expensive. A quick test convinced me that we were stat-ing the same files over and over. It was a combination of explicit checks and implicit code, like os.walk calling os.path.isdir. I wrote a little cache that memoizes the results, which brought the cost of the os.stats down from 1.5 seconds to 0.6. Figuring out why closing files was so expensive was harder. I was writing 77 files, totaling just over 1MB, and it was taking 3.5 seconds. It turned out that it wasn't the UTF-8 codec or newline translation. It was simply that closing those files took far longer than it should have. I decided to try a different profiler, hoping to learn more. I downloaded the Windows Performance Toolkit. I recorded a couple of traces of my application running, then I looked at them in the Windows Performance Analyzer, whereupon I saw that in each case, the CPU spike of my app was followed by a CPU spike in MsMpEng.exe. What's MsMpEng.exe? It's Microsoft's antimalware engine, at the heart of Windows Defender. I added my build tree to the list of excluded locations, and my runtime halved. The 3.5 seconds of file closing dropped to 60 milliseconds, a 98% reduction. The moral of this story is: don't let your virus checker run on your builds.

• Wrong PC-projector resolution in Windows 7

  I'm connecting a PC-projector (Benq MP721) to a Windows 7 Professional laptop (HP 6730b). All the output settings on the laptop, including the laptop screen, changes to 1024x768 (which the projector supports). However the projector says it receives 1360x768 and asks me to change the resolution to 1024x768. I'm using mirrored display. The laptop is 1024x768 The screen resolution in the control panel says 1024x768 The Intel graphics card utilities says 1024x768 The driver for the projector is a Generic PnP Monitor Is there anything in Windows 7 that would convert my 4:3 resolution to wide screen automatically?

• How to develop "Client script library" for ASP.net controls and how do these work?

  I have been working on .Net platform for 2 years and right now I am working on DevExpress controls for 6 months. All these control have client-side Events which are under some ClientScript nameSpace of particular control, Which specify ClientInstanceName, methods and properties accessible at client side. For example Button1 is ClientInstanceName and Button1.Text is a property, with methods like these: Button1.SetValue(); Button1.GetValue(); In ASP.Net Controls, buttons have the ClientClick event that fires before the Server Side Click event. I have inspected and goggled to extend client side functionality in asp.net controls. For example: create a ClientInstanceName property for controls or CheckedChanged event for CheckBox / RadioButton control. I have tried using these MSDN articles: Injecting Client-Side Script from an ASP.NET Server Control Working with Client-Side Script I got much information and ideas from these articles on how to implement/extend these. • Why is there nobody talking about an alternative to HTML & CSS? [closed]

  HTML is such an old and cumbersome language, which was intended just to markup text. Today it's very rare to see a static HTML website, or a site with only text or a very simple layout. As a web developer I find it inconvenient to use HTML & CSS, very repetitive and cumbersome. I think that for a lot of website it could be simplified a lot. Tim Berners-Lee (W3) wrote a document named "The World Wide Web: Past, Present and Future" in August 1996 ... though HTML will be considered part of the established infrastructure (rather than an exciting new toy), there will always be new formats coming along, and it may be that a more powerful and perhaps a more consistent set of formats will eventually displace HTML. So, more than 15 years later, HTML is still here and it's here to stay. Why? Why searching for xml alternatives brings so much relevant result, but searching for html alternatives brings almost none relevant results? Answers like "it's too hard to change a standard" aren't answering the question since a lot of new standards emerged since the initiation of the web. I'm also not searching for answers that suggest using tools to simplify the process or formats that anyhow depends on HTML or CSS, technologies that currently require a plugin and not even trying to become an open standards (like Flash) aren't an answer neither. BTW, here are 2 articles written more than two years ago as food for thought, it might help with writing a better answers. "HTML, CSS, and Web Development Practices: Past, Present, and Future" describing a very related problem, by Jens O. Meiert. "A Brief History of HTML" by Scott Reynen, Here is a quote from the end: So now you can answer questions about HTML5 without even looking at the draft, which is handy, because the draft is 400+ pages long. Why is there a new tag in HTML5? Because some browser vendor (maybe the one that also owns a large video site) wanted it. Why are there so many scriptable interface elements in HTML5? Because some browser vendor (maybe the one selling phones without Flash support) wants them. Why is there no support for RDFa in HTML5? Apparently no browser vendor wanted it. Is that the future?

• TechEd 2010 Day Three: The Database Designer (Isn't)

  Yesterday at TechEd 2010 here in New Orleans I worked the front-booth, answering general SQL Server questions for the masses. I was actually a little surprised to find most of the questions I got were from folks that wanted to know more about Stream Insight and Master Data Services. In past conferences I've been asked a lot of "free consulting" questions, about problems folks have had from older products. I don't mind that a bit - in fact, I'm always happy to help in any way I can. But this time people are really interested in the new features in the product, and I like that they are thinking ahead, not just having to solve problems in production. My presentation was on "Database Design in an Hour". We had the usual fun, and SideShow Bob made an appearance - I kid you not. The guy in the back of the room looked just like Sideshow Bob, so I quickly held a "bes thair" contest, and he won. Duing the presentation, I explain the tools you can use to design databases. I also explain that the "Database Designer" tool in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) isn't truly a desinger - it uses non-standard notation, doesn't have a meta-data dictionary, and worst of all, it works at the physical level. In other words, whatever you do in SSMS will automatically change the field/table/relationship structures in the database. We fixed this in SSMS 2008 and higher by adding an option to block that, but the tool is not a good design function nonetheless. To be fair, no one I know of at Microsoft recommends that it is - but I was shocked to hear so many developers in the room defending it as a good tool. I think the main issue for someone who doesn't have to work with Relational Systems a great deal is that it can be difficult to figure out Foreign Keys. The syntax makes them look "backwards", so it's just easier to grab a field and place it on the table you want to point to. There are options. You can download a couple of free tools (CA has a community edition of ER-WIN, Quest has one, and Embarcadero also has one) and if you design more than one or two databases a year, it may be worth buying a true design tool. For years I used Visio, but we changed it so that it doesn't forward-engineer (create the DDL) any more, so it isn't a true design tool either. So investigate those free and not-so-free tools. You'll find they help you in your job - but stay away from the Database Designer in SSMS. Or I'll send Sideshow Bob over there to straighten you out.   I have huge text files with two fields, the first is a string the second is an integer. The files are sorted by the first field. What I'd like to get in the output is one line per unique string and the sum of the numbers for the identical strings. Some strings appear only once while other appear multiple times. E.g. Given the sample data below, for the string glehnia I'd like to get 10+22=32 in the result. Any suggestions how to do this either with gnuwin32 command line tools or in linux shell? • pdftk utility and batch file

  I cant for the life of me figure out what I'm missing. I have the following batch file: As you can see, when I run this batch file from my desk against a mapped drive it runs just fine: When I run the same exact batch file on the server itself, the place where the mapped drive is located on, it doesnt run and makes me think I have a syntax problem: I just dont understand whats going on, and my eyes are having a hard time keeping track of what might be diff. The server where it isnt working is windows 2003, my desktop where the same batch file is working is Windows 7. • Getting VSFTP running on Fedora 14

  Having troubles getting VSFTPD running on Fedora 14. Here is what I have done so far, please let me know if I am missing something. When I try to connect through FTP it says connection time out.   i am writing a script to install a program with bash, i want to exit on error so i added "set -e" in the beginning of my script. the problem is that i have to check if a user exists inside of my script, to do this i am using "grep "^${USER}:" /etc/passwd", if the user exists, the script runs normally, but if the user doesn't exist, this command exists, and i don't want to exit on this case (i have to create the user and continue my installation). so what's the solution to make my script continue running ?? i tried to redirect the output of "grep" to a variable, but i still have the same problem :( thanks.
