• Simple "Hello World!" console application crashes when run by windows TaskScheduler (1.0)

  I have a batch file which starts multiple instances of simple console application (Hello World!). I work on Windows server 2008 64-bit. I configure it to run in TaskScheduler, at startup, and whether user is logged-in or not. The later configuration means that the instances will run without GUI (i.e. - no window). When I run this task, some of the instances just fail, after consuming 100& CPU. Application event-log shows the following error: "Faulting module KERNEL32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e0421d, exception code 0xc0000142, fault offset 0x00000000000b8fb8, process id 0x29bc, application start time 0x01cae17d94a61895." Running the batch file directly works just fine. It seems to me that the OS has a problem loading too many instances of the application when no window is displayed. However - I can’t figure out why... Any idea??

  We are moving our projects to TFS 2010 using the SfTS v3 (Scrum for Team System) template. We need to understand how Microsoft Test Manager is supposed to be used in this Scrum process. Specific scenario & question: The QA manager uses Test Manager to create Acceptance Test Work Items (WIs). These new WIs are created and "assigned to" him. The manager doesn't run all the tests, instead he wants to give that responsibility to his staff. How is a QA engineer supposed to know that he has tests to run? Everything says it is assigned to the manager.

• What's currently the best way to extend Excel using C#?

  I have the professional versions of VS2008 & VS2010. I wish to add a couple buttons to a toolbar in Excel. When they are clicked I'd like to be able to open a form (either WinForms or WPF is fine) collect a few values from the user in the form and then take that data + read cell values from the current worksheet to perform some database operations. What's currently the best way to do this using C#? I'd greatly appreciate a pointer to any examples / tutorials. My understanding is that VS2010 has improved the process alot but I may have to deal w/ Excel 2003 which I don't think it supports. I get confused between Visual Studio 2008s Extensibility-Shared Addin template and other Office Addin templates I've seen. I'm not sure when which type of solution is appropriate. I'm new to Office development so I'd really appreciate any help to get me going on the right track. Thanks much.

• Painless way to install a new version of R?

  Andrew Gelman recently lamented the lack of an easy upgrade process for R (probably more relevant on Windows that Linux). Does anyone have a good trick for doing the upgrade, from installing the software to copying all the settings/packages over? This suggestion was contained in the comments and is what I've been using recently. • Best way to daemonize Java application on Linux

  Hi. While I found this question being answered here on SW several times, I didn't find a concluding answer what is the best approach. I'm not looking to use any external wrapper, as I found them launching the java process under a nice level lower then themselves which potentially lowers the performance, so it seems only the shell methods are left. I so far found 3 different shell methods: start-stop-daemon RedHat daemon init.d function nohup on start / disown after start What you people are using, and can recommend as the most reliable method? • Returning messages in Smalltalk

  I have a Dictionary of objects I have created in smalltalk, which I am iterating over by enumerating it based on the key/value pairs. For value object in the dictionary, I am calling a method on that object. Based on certain conditions, I would like for this object to be able to add a new member to dictionary, and possibly delete another one. I've been looking at the 'Perform' and 'Messages' facilities in Smalltalk, but I'm not sure if it is even possible to do what I'm trying to do - is it possible to return a message (or multiple messages), which another object can process and perform? For example, could my method return 'removeKey: 19' and 'add object' at the same time? I am using GNU Smalltalk, if it matters.

• Is recursion preferred compare to iteration in multicore era?

  Or say, do multicore CPUs process recursion faster than iteration? Or it simply depends on how one language runs on the machine? like c executes function calls with large cost, comparing to doing simple iterations. I had this question because one day I told one of my friend that recursion isn't any amazing magic that can speed up programs, and he told me that with multicore CPUs recursion can be faster than iteration. EDIT: If we consider the most recursion-loved situation (data structure, function call), is it even possible for recursion to be faster?

• How do I programmatically nullify a File Attachment in InfoPath Forms

  Howdy all, I'm running into a problem with some InfoPath C# code while trying to remove an attachment from a form. Basically the process is: User opens form User clicks button File attachment is cleared I've tried adding a blank attachment to my schema that never becomes populated, then setting the original field's value equal to that value by the method below. When debugging the form I catch an error: Schema validation found non-data type errors. • n00b: receive input over TCP/IP and use it to update HTML

  This has got to be a FAQ, so can someone please just direct me to a "network programming for dummies" URL? The server wants to push information to a client or broadcast to all, when an event happens - as opposed to the clients constantly polling the server "just in case". The client then updates a browser page display. How do I do that? (toldya it was a n00b question) Should I have a thread which receives info on a socket and then writes it to a database which the browser display (PHP) can process with an HTML refresh tag, or what? Sorry to sound so dumb.

• Custom annotations to configure tests

  First of al let me start off by saying I think custom annotations can be used for this but i'm not totally sure. I would like to have a set of annotations that I can decorate some test classes with. The annotations would allow me to configure the test for different environments. Example: public class Atest extends BaseTest{ private String env; @Login(environment=env) public void testLogin(){ //do something } @SignUp(environment=env) public void testSignUp(){ //do something } } The idea here would be that the login annotation would then be used to lookup the username and password to be used in the testLogin method for testing a login process for a particular environment. So my question(s) is this possible to do with annotations? If so I have not been able to find a decent howto online to do something like this. Everything out there seems to be your basic here's how to do your custom annotations and a basic processor but I haven't found anything for a situation like this. Ideas?

• What information do you capture your software crashes in the field?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those.   I'm new to AOP so bear with me. Consider the following scenario: A state machine is used in a workflow engine, and after the state of the application is changed, a series of commands are executed. Depending on the state, different types of commands should be executed. As I see it, one implementation is to create List<IAction> and have each individual action determine whether it should execute. Would a Aspect Oriented process work as well? That is, could you create an aspect that notifies a class when a property changes, and execute the appropriate processes from that class? Would this help centralize the state specific rules?

• Javascript: Save json data as a file on the server / user's hard disk.

  I have developed an app that allows the user to fill out text fields with information. I want them to be able to press a button that will make a file with data (a really long array with info on what they typed and where it should go) so they can reload the data at a later date. I don't have a server now, and I am sending this app as a standalone html app to my friends for their use until I get hosing / mySql / etc. Is there a way that when they click on a button it will take this data (saved as an array, save_data), put it into a file, and basically begin the download process from their web-browser? And later on, what tech would I need to be looking into to save this into online user accounts?

The tables are labeled MESSAGE_LOG_YYYYMMDD Currently i want to sequentially execute the same QUERY against all those tables. I wrote the PL/SQL below, but got stuck at line 10. How can i execute the SQL statement against successfully against all tables here ? • determine which value produced a hit in SOLR multivalued field type

  If I have a multiValued field type of text, and I put values [cat,dog,green,blue] in it. Is there a way to tell when I execute a query against that field for dog, that it was in the 1st element position for that multiValued field? Assumption: client does not have any pre-knowledge of what the field type of the field being queried is. (i.e. Solr must provide the answer and the client can't post process the return doc to figure it out because it would not know how SOLR matched the query to the result). Disclosure: I posted to solr-user list and am getting no traction so I post here now.

• How to integrate an open source C program instead of calling its executable through a system call?

  I have an executable (fossil scm) that is being invoked by my program externally through ::CreateProcess windows call. The stdout and stderr are then captured. Since the source code for fossil is available, I would prefer to create a static library out of it and issue calls directly. Currently, communication to fossil is done through the command line parameters, and the communication back is through the process return code, stdout and stderr. Fossil writes to stdout/err through printf and fprintf calls. What is the best way to solve this with minimum alteration of fossil source? Is there a reliable and cross-platform way to intercept stdout/err and send it into a memory buffer?

• Is it possible to find out what FlashBuilder is doing during compilation?

  I've found that Flash Builder 4 (formerly Flex Builder) has trouble working with large projects. After a certain point, builds seem to take longer and longer. I've tried many different ways of improving build time including: Moving embedded resources into externally linked projects. Using -incremental. Tweaking the .ini jvm settings including memory and -server. Turning off automatic build (I'd prefer not to have to do this, because one of the main reasons for using an IDE is to be told about errors as you make them). Deleting the project and re-checking out from the repository. While some of these may help a bit, the performance is still annoyingly slow. I feel if I knew what was taking so long I could refactor my projects to build faster. Is there some setting that tells FlashBuilder to let me see what parts of the build process take so much time?

  I have few computers connected to the network and I want to create batch files to automatize the process of working with them. I have already created one used to shutdown computers at once. It is very simple I ll just post it for the sake of argument. @echo off shutdown -s -m \\Slave1-PC shutdown -s -m \\Slave2-PC shutdown -s -m \\Slave3-PC Now I want to execute programs on these machines. So lets say there is "example.exe" file located "\Slave1-PC\d\example.exe" using call \\Slave1-PC\\d\\example.exe runs it on my computer through network and i didn't come up with anything else. I dont want to use any psexec if possible. Help would be much appreciated. Peter

In some cases i need to process text in title and other cases i don't, but in last case i need to get string w/o that patterns. For example i have title value like "Something **very** interesting" and when i call @article.title i need to get cleaned up string like "Something very interesting", but when i call @article.title_raw i need get original string.   We're going to start a new huge project and while it's in the process of architecting the system, I have certain doubts whether I can apply patterns and be sure they won't be violated by team members. The problem is, not all team members have enough skills to develop asp.net apps let's say using MVP pattern. So maybe this question is addressed to Team leads, or experienced devs. Did you dealt with this kind of situation, and if so what was your solution. • What is the correct method to load an XML file and re-write it as a CSV?

  I have a XML file that I want to load into an unknown object type. (I say unknown object type because I am not sure what direction to go) Once I have the data loaded I need to do some processing on certain elements that are now loaded into the new object. For sake of example, we can say that the xml file is full of elements named <car> and within the car element I need to process the <mileage> element. • Appending an element to a collection using LINQ

  I am trying to process some list with a functional approach in C#. The idea is that I have a collection of Tuple<T,double> and I want to change the Item 2 of some element T. The functional way to do so, as data is immutable, is to take the list, filter for all elements where the element is different from the one to change, and the append a new tuple with the new values. My problem is that I do not know how to append the element at the end. I would like to do: public List<Tuple<T,double>> Replace(List<Tuple<T,double>> collection, T term,double value) { return collection.Where(x=>!x.Item1.Equals(term)).Append(Tuple.Create(term,value)); } But there is no Append method. Is there something else?

• Is a new thread in a Visual Studio test project aborted when the test ends?

  Hi, i have to do some message exchange with a 3rd party (in a website). When the client posts a page, i start the message exchange. When that doesn't succeed for some reason, i report this to the client by rendering the page with a message. On the background, in a separate thread, i start a process to send abort messages to the 3rd party. I can't do this while the user is waiting for the page to come back, because it might take a few minutes. But in a test project, the test ends when the message to the 3rd party is sent, and after the new thread is started. But it seems that the new thread also ends, when the test is done. Is that normal behaviour? I do start the thread in a new class with a reference to 2 objects from the class which tries to send the message in the first place, may that be a problem?

  Hi, I am having some headaches regarding method chaining for a quite simple PHP class that returns a value, which sometimes need to go through a decryption process: $dataset = new Datacontainer; $key = $dataset->get('key'); $key2 = $dataset->get('key')->decrypt(); The get method is where the return lives. So the call to the decrypt method on the second row isn't going to work in its current state. Can I do something to setup the get method to return only when nothing is chained to it, or what would be the best way to re-factor this code?

  Hi guys, So I'm slowly tackling OO and Zend Framework and their MVC process in particular. I have an existing website and web-based calendar application that was designed by me, but coded by a different person and done procedurally. I understand that it will be very difficult for my application to ever be completely OO without a full re-write, and I'm fine with that. I have a lot of updates and modifications I want to do in the future, so I'm wanting to start replacing some of the basic components (login, authentication. etc) now, and continue to learn as I go. Again, I'm really a newbie at programming and OO. What I'm wondering is if I'm wanting to incorporate the Framework, then would I just first drop my whole site into the /public folder of the Framework and then start pulling functionality out from there?
