• How do you fix "Too many open files" problem in Hudson?

  We use Hudson as a continuous integration system to execute automated builds (nightly and based on CVS polling) of a lot of our projects. Some projects poll CVS every 15 minutes, some others poll every 5 minutes and some poll every hour. Every few weeks we'll get a build that fails with the following output: FATAL: java.io.IOException: Too many open files java.io.IOException: java.io.IOException: Too many open files at java.lang.UNIXProcess.<init>(UNIXProcess.java:148) The next build always worked (with 0 changes) so we always chalked it up to 2 build jobs being run at the same time and happening to have too many files open during the process. This weekend we had a build fail Friday night (automatic nightly build) with the message and every other nightly build also failed. Somehow this triggered Hudson to continuously build every project which failed until the issue was resolved. This resulted in a build every 30 minutes or so of every project until sometime Saturday night when the issue magically disappeared.

• Can I safely move my project to .NET 4.0?

  I've migrated my project to VS2010 but have not yet targeted .NET 4.0. It's currently targeting 3.5 SP1 (and CLR 2). The project relies on several third party components -- mostly open source -- that were presumably built against the 2.0 CLR. Can I simply retarget my project to the 4.0 runtime? Or do I have to get new versions of all the referenced assemblies on which it depends? I've read a little about the new in-process side-by-side feature of .NET 4.0, but I don't think it applies here (the example I read was about two different .NET plug ins to an office application). My situation is different. My solution directly references assemblies and I wouldn't think side-by-side applies -- unless I don't understand its purpose. TIA

• How to "unbind" a socket programmatically?

  1) The socket doesn't seem to unbind from the LocalEndPoint until the process ends. 2) I have tried the solutions from the other question, and also tried waiting a minute - to no avail. 3) At the moment I have tried the below to get rid of the socket and its connections: public static void killUser(User victim) { LingerOption lo = new LingerOption(false, 0); victim.connectedSocket.SetSocketOption(SocketOptionLevel.Socket,SocketOptionName.Linger, lo); victim.connectedSocket.Shutdown(SocketShutdown.Both); victim.connectedSocket.Disconnect(true); victim.connectedSocket.Close(); clients.RemoveAt(victim.ID); } 4) After a bit of googling, I can't seem to be able to unbind a port, thus if I have a sufficient amount of connecting clients, I will eventually run out of ports to listen on.

• Can I expose MySQL data using PHP and OData?

  As I understand it, OData is just a standardized way to expose relational data RESTfully. If I've got a PHP application, it should be able to process those RESTful requests and manipulate a MySQL database based on the request data and then return an ATOM feed. First, are the preceeding statements correct? Second, does a PHP library to do this already exist or would I have to create my own? If I have completely misunderstood these technologies and my question doesn't make sense, please feel free to let me know.

• caching in memory on server

  I want to write web app with client Javascript and back-end server (Python). Client needs data from server frequently in AJAX way. Data in DB, and expensive to load for each request. However, in desktop app I would just load data from DB once to memory and then access it. In web app - the server code runs each time for request so I can't do it (each run has to load from DB to memory again). How can this work? Can a single process run on server or do I have to use something different here? An example is like auto-complete here on stackoverflow for tags - how is it implemented in the server for fast caching/loading?

• Automated user testing with times

  I am attempting to test user interaction with an off the shelf product. The current process is to run through a manual script and record how long certain processes take to populate data, it may populate a datagrid, a tree, a list box, etc... It will also need to be able record how long it takes to generate a pdf report. We do not require extremely accurate time just to the nearest second or less than a second. I need to know if there is a simple Automated testing product that will handle the above criteria.

• I'm asked to tune a long starting app into a short time period

  Hi, I'm asked to shorten the startup period of a long starting app, however I have also to obligate to my managers to the amount of time i will reduce the startup - something like 10-20 seconds. As i'm new in my company I said I can obligate with timeframe of months (its a big server and I'm new and i plan to do lazy load + performance tuning). that answer was not accepted I was required to do some kind of a cache to hold important data in another server and then when my server starts up it would reach all its data from that cache - I find it a kind of a workaround and i don't really like it. do you like it? what do you think I should do? any suggestions? PS when i profiled the app i saw many small issues that make the startup long (like 2 minutes) it would not be a short process to fix all and to make lazy load. • How to get site context/information during the PreapplicationStartMethod

  When you run the same web based application as a multi-tenant application for different clients is there a way during the PreapplicationStartMethod to gain some kind of context to the site that is being started? More specifically I'd like to get the host header information (the "bindingInformation" attribute value from the applicationHost.config); I have found ways to get this information at the time of a specific request long after the application has started. Is there a way to get the information during the application startup process? This is an MVC 3 application and IIS 7.5.

• Will the app file be sync from dmgr side after we remove it from installedApps path in Websphere?

  do you know whether the app file will be sync from dmgr side and regenerated after we remove it from installedApps path? i've got one issue recently from customer. That is, they uploaded one image file into WASNode installedApps app path manually. Afterwards, they removed that file manually again from installedApps app path. But after restarting the Application server process, that file has been regenerated under same installedApps path. So i suspect that file maybe has been resync from dmgr node, like app file under applications folder. However, first of all, i don't see that image file within application ear file from DMGR applications folder. Moreover, i made a test myself, if i deleted file from installedApps app path, that file never be regenerated any more even though the node sync completed. So does anybody know why? • For simple C cmd programs: how to add "program executed in 12,345 seconds" ?

  I'm a windows user, and I'm learning C. I use Codeblocks and visual c++ 2008 express at home to write simple C command line programs (I'm a beginner) and I find really useful when codeblocks adds a few lines at the end with the time it takes (example: "Process returned 0 (0x0) execution time : 6.848 s"). I want to add this functionality to the .exe so I can 'benchmark' or 'test' the program on a few computers. I tried using time(NULL) but it only works with 1 second precision. I also found very interesting answers here (I'm actually looking for the same thing): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2173323/calculating-time-by-the-c-code The solution proposed by Mark Wilkins, works fine on visual c++ 2008 express on my windows 64 bit PC, but the .exe does not work anywhere else. Am I doing something wrong? I would like a method to count elapsed wall time for my programs, that must have 32bit compatibility. Thanks in advance!

  If I have many input controls in a form (There are separate validators for each of these input controls - like required,length and so on ) , there is a command button which submits the form and calls an action method. The requirement is - though the input control values are , say , individually okay - the combination of these values should be okay to process them together after the form submission - Where do i place the code to validate them together? 1) Can i add a custom validator for the command button and validate the combination together? like validate(FacesContext arg0, UIComponent arg1, Object value) but even then I will not have values of the other input controls except for the command button's/component's value right ? 2) can i do the validation of the combination in the action method and add validation messages using FacesMessage ? or do you suggest any other approach? • Managing the localization of Java properties files

  I have a Web application written in Java that is targeting several countries, all of which speak different languages (and more often than not, several languages -- that's Europe for you). We have a bunch of .properties files that hold the localized strings, and our current procedure is to e-mail the language-specific files to our partners for updating before doing major updates. However, this process is rather error-prone, as sometimes people forget to translate new strings and sometimes new strings don't get added to every language file, thus small mistakes get through very easily. Does anyone know of any existing software that could help us clear this mess? At a bare minimum, I'm thinking of something that would allow you to load a master file (for example, in English), a localized file and then would highlight the keys that were added to or removed from the master file.

• Coldfusion CFC creation taking a variable amout of time to execute.

  I've been doing some logging of object creation times in our open account process in production. Periodically, initializing an object would take way longer than expected. By initializing I mean calling it's init() and passing a couple of arguments that may be simple variables or objects. e.g. <cfset validateObj = createObject("component", "compExample").init( productionMode = VARIABLES.productionMode, ipWhiteListed = isWhiteListed, ipLocatorObj = VARIABLES.ipLocatorObj ) /> Thats all that happens in init() methods. Generally the execution time would be 0ms, but at random times I might get 3 or 3.5 seconds. This is not specific to one particular server or to our generally busy period. It appears to be quite random. One thought was that these templates were being evicted from our template cache as they are not especially frequently used, although I checked cfstat on a number of servers and the max CP/Sec is -1. Running CF 8,0,1 Has anybody else ever come across this?

When you'r adding a list of items, I do something like: var template = new Template("<li id='list#{id}'>#{value}</li>"); var arrayTemplate = []; arrayOfItem.each(function(item, index){ arrayTemplate.push(template.evaluate( id : index, value : item)) }); after this two options add the list via "update" or "insert" ----- $("elementToUpdate").update("<ul>" + arrayTemplate.join("") + "</ul">); the question is how can I add the event handler without repeat the process of read the array, this is because if you try add a Event before the update or insert you will get an Error because the element isn't still on the DOM. so what I'm doing by now is after insert or update: arrayOfItem.each(function(item, index){ $("list" + index).observe("click", function(){ alert("I see the world"); }) }); so the question is exist a better way to doing this??????

  i want to show a PD when my activity A starts another activity B. But in that onclick method, my A activity haves to do some work before start B, and B also haves to do some work because it haves to load a lot of data for the UI. • How to automate login to Google API to get OAuth 2.0 token to access known user account

  Ok, so this question has been asked before here. In the response/answer to the question, the user tells him to store the token in the application (session and not db, although it doesn't matter where you store it). After going through the documentation on Google, it seems that the token has an expiration date after which it is no longer valid. Now, we could obviously automatically refresh the token every fixed interval, thereby prolonging the lifespan of the token, but for some reason, this manual process feels like a hack. My questions is: Is this most effective (/generally accepted) way to access google calendar/app data for a known user account by manually logging in and persisting the token in the application? Or is there another mechanism that allows us to programmatically login to this user account and go through the OAuth steps?

In the process of development, we have come up with a class that has 5 attributes, all these attributes correspond to an entry in the xml file, now if the user adds/modifies the xml entry the object corresponding to it must change automatically, one approach would be generate the source code, before compile time.Is there any other way ?   How does message loops in erlang work, are they sync when it comes to processing messages? As far as I understand, the loop will start by "receive"ing a message and then perform something and hit another iteration of the loop. So that has to be sync? right? If multiple clients send messages to the same message loop, then all those messages are queued and performed one after another, or? To process multiple messages in parallell, you would have to spawn multiple message loops in different processes, right? Or did I misunderstand all of it?

  We are moving our projects to TFS 2010 using the SfTS v3 (Scrum for Team System) template. We need to understand how Microsoft Test Manager is supposed to be used in this Scrum process. Specific scenario & question: The QA manager uses Test Manager to create Acceptance Test Work Items (WIs). These new WIs are created and "assigned to" him. The manager doesn't run all the tests, instead he wants to give that responsibility to his staff. How is a QA engineer supposed to know that he has tests to run? Everything says it is assigned to the manager.

• What's currently the best way to extend Excel using C#?

  I have the professional versions of VS2008 & VS2010. I wish to add a couple buttons to a toolbar in Excel. When they are clicked I'd like to be able to open a form (either WinForms or WPF is fine) collect a few values from the user in the form and then take that data + read cell values from the current worksheet to perform some database operations. What's currently the best way to do this using C#? I'd greatly appreciate a pointer to any examples / tutorials. My understanding is that VS2010 has improved the process alot but I may have to deal w/ Excel 2003 which I don't think it supports. I get confused between Visual Studio 2008s Extensibility-Shared Addin template and other Office Addin templates I've seen. I'm not sure when which type of solution is appropriate. I'm new to Office development so I'd really appreciate any help to get me going on the right track. Thanks much.

• Queue remote calls to a Python Twisted perspective broker?

  The strength of Twisted (for python) is its asynchronous framework (I think). I've written an image processing server that takes requests via Perspective Broker. It works great as long as I feed it less than a couple hundred images at a time. However, sometimes it gets spiked with hundreds of images at virtually the same time. Because it tries to process them all concurrently the server crashes. As a solution I'd like to queue up the remote_calls on the server so that it only processes ~100 images at a time. It seems like this might be something that Twisted already does, but I can't seem to find it. Any ideas on how to start implementing this? A point in the right direction? Thanks!

• Branch structure for a web site

  I was recently reading the TFS Branching Guide and it suggests a branch for every release. For a web site, there is only one "version" released at a time. In that case is it appropriate to have a single "Production" branch? Then, during the process of preparing for a release, you merge changes from the Main branch into Production. (As opposed to the suggestion to branch each release.) If you need to do a hotfix, do it in the Production branch, then reverse integrate into Main. Doing it this way allows you to keep configuration files for Production intact in the Production branch.
