  As a semester project, I have the following specification: Write a simple single threaded ftp server. The ftp server is configurable from a configuration file. The config allows to set the interface (where the server listens), the roots of the served content, transfer log, and database of users and its passwords. The server allows to create a virtual filesystem. By a virtual filesystem, we mean a mapping of a served directory to the real directory on the filesystem. For example, the client tree will look like: /home/user1 maps to /mnt/x/home/user1 /www maps to /var/cache/www /home/user_list.txt maps to /var/ftpclient/user_list.txt The user will see /home/user1 directory and /www directory and the file /home/user_list.txt The course is in C++. The projects to this point have provided a lot of structure, such as a class header file to get you started on the program. My question is this: how can I get started on what seems like quite a massive project (I have 3 weeks to return a working implementation)?

• Ubuntu 12.04 - what is it with the keyboard layout resets?

  so, on each reboot my keyboard always resets to US (!?) sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration gives temporary relief. Is there a way to make it permanent? I tried: sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup This did not work, and on reboot gnome3 was no longer responsive so I am back to gnome classic.... • Can not login to Normal mode

  I installed ubuntu 12 in my old PC Acer Power Series. After installation i got the Login Screen which appears unusally big. when i logged-in in some fail-safe mode. I got the normal ubuntu running. but if i restart the system i can login using fail-safe mode but i can't login normally. I think the problem must be i don't have a graphic card. Even if i do have one that must be very very low configuration one. Kindly help me with graphic card config if that is the problem with my PC. I just want to use ubuntu for normal documentation purpose. I am new to ubuntu so techcies help me with basic guidance. Thank you. Karthik Muralitharan

He writes : I don’t have any need for namespaced content; I’m not displaying any complex mathematical notation here and don’t plan to, and I don’t use SVG for any images. So that’s one advantage of XHTML out the window. I also don’t have any need for XML tools; all the processing I need to do can be handled by HTML-parsing libraries like BeautifulSoup. • C# to develop Android app

  I am learning C# and I'm wondering if there is the potential to develop an Android app that satisfy the need that I'm going to explain. I would basically need an app that, when launched retrieves some data from a webpage (i.e. realtime stock prices), trim the xml to find the data i need and store this value into a variable. Then some calculation is performed on this data and the result is sent via email. It is already possible to launch an app automatically based on some conditions (e.g. every 5 minutes) by using the software Tasker. It is actually also possible to retrieve the data from a webpage and save to a Tasker variable or to a txt file somewhere in the phone (or Dropbox/Box...). But I would like to do that directly via an app so that everything is done "internally" once the app is launched. If that's possible, how should I proceed? Is there any good reference I can use to address my need?

• What driver for nVIDIA GeForce MX440?

  I have recently installed (clean install) Ubuntu 12.10 on a desktop PC with nVIDIA GeForce MX440 (AGP 8x) and I have problems with Unity. Although I can see the desktop, however i can't see unity bar and icons. So, I decided to install lubuntu-desktop to see the performance. And yes! I choose lubuntu-desktop from Log On screen and the performance is definetely much better and has nothing to do with the aforementioned on unity. The system has native drivers from the Ubuntu installation. I didn't touch anything in xorg configuration. I also remember that I have managed to have the best performance with this graphic card on my previous Ubuntu 9.10 system, by editing some values in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. But I can't remember that options, because I formatted the / partition! My question is: Which is the most suitable driver for this card, in order to load the unity feature and have better performance on it?

• Which MIME type to compress? and what If I omit the `type` attribute from the HTML?

  Per my request, my webhost had turned mod_deflate ON. In my Cpanel I now have an "Optimize Website" button. Inside that menu I could either choose: "Compress all content" or "Compress the specified MIME types" with the following default MIME types: "text/html text/plain text/xml" Which option should I choose and why? If I choose option 2, which types should I add (is there a recommended list with the exact way they should be written)? According to Google recommendations, I have omitted the type="text/css" attributes from all CSS references, as well as the type="text/javascript" attributes from all script references. Would this hinder the "gzipping" process?

• Why would urls submitted in google webmaster tools drop to 0?

  Why would urls submitted in google webmaster tools drop to 0? It's a small site, only like 20 pages, I submitted the xml sitemap and for about a week it said 20 urls submitted. A day or so ago it indexed about 17 of the pages, but today when looking it not only says that 0 are indexed but also 0 have been submitted. I did a site search on google and found clearly that pages are indexed, is this just an error on google webmaster tools? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

  I'm currently working with phpmyedit and I need to access to the 'Add' (new record) function using a URL. As this script (phpmyedit) is dinamically generated, when I press the 'Add' button, I get the form to fill but the URL has no changes. How can I create some custom URL for the ADD button, that allows me to access externally and also pass parameters through the URL? • Where can I get the 11.04 kernel .config file?

  I'm using Maverick with the latest available kernels on kernel.org and building them myself. Until now I've been basing my configuration off the stock Maverick kernel and accepting the make oldconfig defaults. I've been doing this for 3 major releases now so I figure I'm starting to slip behind the current "standard". I would like to re-base my kernels off the new Natty .config file. Is this available somewhere online or do I have to download the whole kernel package and extract it? Edit: I've manually pulled in the config from the latest Natty kernel package and I can confirm that I propbably should have done this sooner. A lot of differences between my old "evolved" config and the Natty default. Now if I could just do this without 20 minutes of hunting and downloading the package so I can re-base in the future.

  Basicly my problem emerges when I try to load Facebook and Yahoomail, I don't know why Both browsers Firefox and Chromium don't load these webpages, but this problem only happen with UBUNTU, when I'm in windows no problem. Note: The other webpages like youtube, gmail etc load without any problem.   I have the following configuration: sda1 1 GB maybe fat32 (windows recovery partition) sda2 40 GB ntfs(windows drive c) with boot flag sda3 around 100GB ntfs(storage partition) sda4 extended partition:sda5 10 GB ext4 partition sda6 1 GB linux swap I want to make this changes: sda2 30 GB resize(decrease size with 10 GB) sda3 around 100GB(move and maybe decrease size with 4-5 GB) sda4 around 20-22 GB (move and increase size with 10-15GB) sda5 around 20 GB (move and increase size with 10-12 GB) sda6 2 GB (move and increase size with 1 GB) Is it safe to do this operations?Will i lose grub? I will do the changes with gparted on puppy linux live usb. Thanks

• Ubuntu 11.10 boot: xhost: unable to open display

  I've had this papercut for a while now, it's time it was fixed. When I boot up Ubuntu, choosing "Ubuntu...generic" from the grub screen, Ubuntu fails to load. It just sits at the driver/module loading screen. What seems to be the most significant line in this output is "xhost: unable to open display" If I choose "Ubuntu...(recovery mode)" from grub then it loads OK. I don't get why this is. Out of interest I tried enabling boot error logging with #/etc/default/bootlogd BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes but I'm not seeing anything in that file. ETA: I've had this problem since fresh install of 11.10. • Display settings problems with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

  For whatever reason (this was working correctly on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) when I try to set my displays on top of each other in the settings, it won't allow to place them on top of each other. When I click "apply" I get the error message "Could Not Set Configuration Mode for CRTC 63." Can anybody help me with this? It wont let me set the two displays on top of each other, but it will allow me to place them side to side. Also, I get a random "Unknown display" as well. This was not existent in 12.04 LTS and I have no idea what it is, seeing as how the only screens that are in use, or plugged up for that matter, is my laptop's display (1366x768) and my Samsung TV display (1360x768) thru HDMI.

• How do I convert a partially transparent image into polygons?

  I'm using GLEE2D, a level editor allowing me to import images, scale them, rotate them, and position them onto layers and export the data into XML format. However, it does not tell me objects' boundaries. I can calculate them, but only given the original image's polygons. How do I get polygons of objects in a transparent image? An example object (I outlined it): How would I turn the object, knowing the scaled size of the image, into polygons? Is there an algorithm for this? I'll use OpenGL to draw them.
