• Codechef practice question help needed - find trailing zeros in a factorial

  I have been working on this for 24 hours now, trying to optimize it. The question is how to find the number of trailing zeroes in factorial of a number in range of 10000000 and 10 million test cases in about 8 secs.   I have an view in my App which has a number of buttons based on the number of items returned by the server. So if the server returns say 10 items, there should be 10 buttons and clicking on each button should call a different person. • Transaction Isolation Level of Serializable not working for me

  I have a website which is used by all branches of a store and what it does is that it records customer purchases into a table called myTransactions.myTransactions table has a column named SerialNumber.For each purchase i create a record in the transactions table and assign a serial to it.The stored procedure that does this calls a UDF function to get a new serialNumber before inserting the record.Like below : Create Procedure mytransaction_Insert as begin insert into myTransactions(column1,column2,column3,...SerialNumber) values( Value1 ,Value2,Value3,...., getTransactionNSerialNumber()) end Create function getTransactionNSerialNumber as begin RETURN isnull(SELECT TOP (1) SerialNumber FROM myTransactions READUNCOMMITTED ORDER BY SerialNumber DESC),0) + 1 end The website is being used by so many users in different stores at the same time and it is creating many duplicate serialNumbers(same SerialNumbers).So i added a Sql transaction with ReadCommitted level to the transaction and i still got duplicate transaction numbers.I changed it to SERIALIZABLE in order to lock the resources and i not only got duplicate transaction numbers(!!HOW!!) but i also got sporadic deadlocks between the same stored procedure calls.This is what i tried : (With ommissions of try catch blocks and rollbacks) Create Procedure mytransaction_Insert as begin SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE BEGIN TRASNACTION ins insert into myTransactions(column1,column2,column3,...SerialNumber) values( Value1 ,Value2 , Value3, ...., getTransactionNSerialNumber()) COMMIT TRANSACTION ins SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION READCOMMITTED end I even copied the function that gets the serial number directly into the stored procedure instead of the UDF function call and still got duplicate serialNumbers.So,How can a stored procedure line create something Like the c# lock() {} block. By the way,i have to implement the transaction serial number using the same pattern and i can't change the serialNumber to any other identity field or whatever.And for some reasons i need to generate the serialNumber inside the databse and i can't move SerialNumber generation to application level. • Entity Framework Performance Problem

  I'm hoping that someone can help me understand how to overcome a performance problem I'm running into with the latest version of the Entity Framework. In my test, I created my model from a database consisting of around 80 tables. The problem that I'm running into is that the cost of the very first query I run on a thread is very expensive. If I run without pre-compiling views the first query takes anywhere from 5800 to 6600 milliseconds. If I pre-compile the views (see this article) I can get the initial query cost down to about 2800 to 3200 milliseconds. 3 seconds for each request is still unacceptable for my needs. Subsequent queries are very fast. Can you please help me understand how to eliminate the poor performance of the initial query? I'm using the version of entity framework that ships with Visual Studio 2010 RC.

I've compared the traffic when I establish a ssh connection (from openssh client to openssh server), to the traffic when my client connects to the same openssh server. So where I'm stranded is: RFC 4419 page 3 http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4419.txt I've send SSH_MSG_KEY_DH_GEX_REQUEST, but the server does not respond SSH_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_GROUP. Can anyone give me a little advice on what I'm not understanding here? Does the server not understand my GEX request (due to it expecting encryption, or?)?   I'm trying to find a solution for a query on a generalized Fibonacci sequence (GFS). The query is: are there any GFS that have 885 as their 12th number? The initial 2 numbers may be restricted between 1 and 10. I already found the solution to find the Nth number in a sequence that starts at (1, 1) in which I explicitly define the initial numbers. Here is what I have for this: fib(1, 1). fib(2, 1). fib(N, X) :- N #> 1, Nmin1 #= N - 1, Nmin2 #= N - 2, fib(Nmin1, Xmin1), fib(Nmin2, Xmin2), X #= Xmin1 + Xmin2. For the query mentioned I thought the following would do the trick, in which I reuse the fib method without defining the initial numbers explicitly since this now needs to be done dynamically: fib2 :- X1 in 1..10, X2 in 1..10, fib(1, X1), fib(2, X2), fib(12, 885). ... but this does not seem to work. Is it not possible this way to define the initial numbers, or am I doing something terribly wrong? I'm not asking for the solution, but any advice that could help me solve this would be greatly appreciated.

  I've a repository containing snapshot artifacts with timestamps. I want to create an assembly, that contains the dependencies. This works fine. But the artifact names contains the timestamp. So i wonder how to remove the timestamp from filename for the assembly only. I've used this dependencySet: <outputFileNameMapping>${artifact.artifactId}-${artifact.version}.${artifact.extension}</outputFileNameMapping> But version seams to contain already the timestamp. So is there any chance to get a 1.1.1-SNAPSHOT instead of 1.1.1-20100323.071348-182?

  I have been given a staff list which is supposed to be up to date but it doesn't match an intranet People Finder which is written in ASP.NET. As the information is sensitive I am not able to access the database the People Finder is using so the only way I can get at the information is by scraping the structure starting at the top brass at the top and then going through each tier in turn. Each person has a Staff number which then forms the URL http://intranet/peoplefinder/index.aspx?srn=ABC1234 and then all the people who report to them are listed underneth in the format <a id="gvEmployees_ctl03_lnkFullName" href="index.aspx?srn=ABC4321" target="_self"> where each URL indicates the Staff number and provides a link to their team. The trouble arises when the teams are big as paging is implemented in the GridView with an URL such as <a href="javascript:__doPostBack('gvEmployees','Page$2')">2</a>. How would I scrape this page, capture the SRN and other details along with the people who report to the person on all pages of the GridView then loop through each reportee and do the same process until the whole list is complete?

  I am trying to create a simple video player SWF using the open source media framework in Flex 4. I want to make it dynamically scale based on the dimensions of the video, input by the user. I am following the directions on the Adobe help site, but the video does not seem to scale properly. Depending on the size, sometimes videos play larger than the space allotted on the webpage, and sometimes smaller. The only way I have been able to get it to work properly is by including a SWF metadata tag hardcoding the width and height, but I can't use that if I want to make the player dynamically sized. When I put the key in the text area, supply a name, and click 'Add Key', I am taken to the Job profile page without any confirmation that the key has been added.(I am using SSH client GUI to generate RSA keys). When I come back to the SSH public keys page, I see that the key is not there. I tried this multiple times...without any result. With the newest version this method produces a completely black image. nice /usr/local/bin/convert -colorspace gray -compress group4 /var/www/html/uploads/pokemon.jpg /var/www/html/uploads/pokemontest.jpg nice /usr/local/bin/convert -colors 2 /var/www/html/uploads/pokemontest.jpg /var/www/html/uploads/pokemontestfinal.jpg This results in a bitonal gray and black image, but it's really rough. NOT clean at all.

Note : 'code_summary_id' is define as column in code_set_detail table, and define as primary key in code_summary table. To sum-up, I would like define 'code_summary_id' as primary key in code_summary table, and map 'code_summary_id' in code_set_detail table. How to define a primary key in a table, and also map this key to another table ?

  Hi, I making a game leaderboard on facebook. I'm not using connect but working inside the canvas. When I try to load the images from facebook it gives me the following error.   I'm trying to use the EWS API to access an Exchange server from a console program i'm writing. I've specified the type of exchange server i'm connecting to but when I try to execute the code i have, it gives me Error 1 The type 'System.TimeZoneInfo' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must add a reference to assembly 'System.Core, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'. C:\Documents and Settings\jsorensen\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\ConsoleApplication2\ConsoleApplication2\Program.cs 26 13 ConsoleApplication2 Does Microsoft Visual Studio Academic Edition not support TimeZoneInfo or is the version of .Net that XP can have not up-to date enough to work with the EWS API? • How to implement or emulate an "abstract" OCUnit test class?

  I have a number of Objective-C classes organized in an inheritance hierarchy. They all share a common parent which implements all the behaviors shared among the children. Each child class defines a few methods that make it work, and the parent class raises an exception for the methods designed to be implemented/overridden by its children. This effectively makes the parent a pseudo-abstract class (since it's useless on its own) even though Objective-C doesn't explicitly support abstract classes. The crux of this problem is that I'm unit testing this class hierarchy using OCUnit, and the tests are structured similarly: one test class that exercises the common behavior, with a subclass corresponding to each of the child classes under test. However, running the test cases on the (effectively abstract) parent class is problematic, since the unit tests will fail in spectacular fashion without the key methods. (The alternative of repeating the common tests across 5 test classes is not really an acceptable option.) The non-ideal solution I've been using is to check (in each test method) whether the instance is the parent test class, and bail out if it is. This leads to repeated code in every test method, a problem that becomes increasingly annoying if one's unit tests are highly granular. In addition, all such tests are still executed and reported as successes, skewing the number of meaningful tests that were actually run. What I'd prefer is a way to signal to OCUnit "Don't run any tests in this class, only run them in its child classes." To my knowledge, there isn't (yet) a way to do that, something similar to a +(BOOL)isAbstractTest method I can implement/override. Any ideas on a better way to solve this problem with minimal repetition? Does OCUnit have any ability to flag a test class in this way, or is it time to file a Radar? Edit: Here's a link to the test code in question. Notice the frequent repetition of if (...) return; to start a method, including use of the NonConcreteClass() macro for brevity.

• bash script to check running process

  I wrote a bash-script to check if a process is running. It doesn't work since the ps command always returns exit code 1. When I run the ps command from the command-line, the $? is correctly set, but within the script it is always 1. • Using $.get with jquery validation

  I'm trying to use the Jquery builtin validator on my page. The issue is that I have certain fields that only are required if the JobID (entered into another field) does not already exist in our database. I have a simple service which simply takes JobID and returns True or False based on whether the JobID exists, but I can't seem to get this information where I want it. I've tried half a dozen different ways of setting variables and calling functions within functions and still cannot get a way to simply return the value of that page (which I've been trying to access with $.get() ) to my validator, so that required is set to true when the Job does not exist and false if the job already exists. Any suggestions? Thanks.

• priority queue with limited space: looking for a good algorithm

  This is not a homework. I'm using a small "priority queue" (implemented as array at the moment) for storing last N items with smallest value. This is a bit slow - O(N) item insertion time. Current implementation keeps track of largest item in array and discards any items that wouldn't fit into array, but I still would like to reduce number of operations further. looking for a priority queue algorithm that matches following requirements: queue can be implemented as array, which has fixed size and _cannot_ grow. Dynamic memory allocation during any queue operation is strictly forbidden. Anything that doesn't fit into array is discarded, but queue keeps all smallest elements ever encountered. O(log(N)) insertion time (i.e. adding element into queue should take up to O(log(N))). (optional) O(1) access for *largest* item in queue (queue stores *smallest* items, so the largest item will be discarded first and I'll need them to reduce number of operations) Easy to implement/understand. Ideally - something similar to binary search - once you understand it, you remember it forever. Elements need not to be sorted in any way. I just need to keep N smallest value ever encountered. When I'll need them, I'll access all of them at once. So technically it doesn't have to be a queue, I just need N last smallest values to be stored. I initially thought about using binary heaps (they can be easily implemented via arrays), but apparently they don't behave well when array can't grow anymore. Linked lists and arrays will require extra time for moving things around. stl priority queue grows and uses dynamic allocation (I may be wrong about it, though). So, any other ideas?

• Converting table columns to key value pairs

  I am writing a PL/SQL procedure that loads some data from Schema A into Schema B. They are both very different schemas and I can't change the structure of Schema B. Columns in various tables in Schema A (joined together in a view) need to be inserted into Schema B as key=value pairs in 2 columns in a table, each on a separate row. For example, an employee's first name might be present as employee.firstname in Schema A, but would need to be entered in Schema B as: id=>1, key=>'A123', value=>'Smith' There are almost 100 keys, with the potential for more to be added in future. This means I don't really want to hardcode any of these keys. Sample code: create table schema_a_employees ( emp_id number(8,0), firstname varchar2(50), surname varchar2(50) ); insert into schema_a_employees values ( 1, 'James', 'Smith' ); insert into schema_a_employees values ( 2, 'Fred', 'Jones' ); create table schema_b_values ( emp_id number(8,0), the_key varchar2(5), the_value varchar2(200) ); I thought an elegant solution would most likely involve a lookup table to determine what value to insert for each key, and doesn't involve effectively hardcoding dozens of similar statements like.... insert into schema_b_values ( 1, 'A123', v_firstname ); insert into schema_b_values ( 1, 'B123', v_surname ); What I'd like to be able to do is have a local lookup table in Schema A that lists all the keys from Schema B, along with a column that gives the name of the column in the table in Schema A that should be used to populate, e.g. key "A123" in Schema B should be populated with the value of the column "firstname" in Schema A, e.g. create table schema_a_lookup ( the_key varchar2(5), the_local_field_name varchar2(50) ); insert into schema_a_lookup values ( 'A123', 'firstname' ); insert into schema_a_lookup values ( 'B123', 'surname' ); But I'm not sure how I could dynamically use values from the lookup table to tell Oracle which columns to use. So my question is, is there an elegant solution to populate schema_b_values table with the data from schema_a_employees without hardcoding for every possible key (i.e. A123, B123, etc)? Cheers.
