• Examples of continuous integration workflow using git

  Can anyone provide a rough outline of their git workflow that complies with continuous integration. E.g. How do you branch? Do you fast forward commits to the master branch? I am primarily working with Rails as well as client and server side Javascript. If anyone can recommend a solid CI technology that's compatible with those, that'd be great. I've looked into Jenkins but would like to check out other good alternatives. To put some context into this, I am planning on transitioning from working as a single developer into working as part of the team. I'd like to start standardizing my own personal workflow so that I can onboard new devs quickly.

• Linux Mint is Brilliant

  Most of my blog posts sound way too whiny. I'm not that guy. (Am I?) I've been using SUSE-flavored Linux for personal projects since 2002 (SUSE Linux 8.1). This past weekend, I made the heart-wrenching decision to abandon openSUSE (version 12.1) in favor of Linux Mint (version Maya). OpenSUSE had just become too burdensome. Packages that installed easily on RedHat or Debian always had issues running on top of OpenSUSE. And I never could get the Heroku Toolbelt installed in any kind of usable state.And so, ...I'm beginning again with this enticing young thing -- Mint with the Cinnamon window environment. Delicious. And while I'll always have fond memories of my years with openSUSE, I've got to admit that Mint makes running Linux feel good again. http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2031

• Error: Unable to load OraOps10.dll

  Hello, I have NT services compiled with 32 bit version of oracle client on windows 7, but when I run this service on windows 2008 I get error: Unable to load OraOps10.dll. I guess that this is because I have newer version of oracle client on the server then on my development station, but I can not install old (32 bit version) client on server, and can not install 64 bit client on development station... So may be there is some solution like manually to copy some files and change values in registry? Thank you for ahead.

• Stop SQL Server services from conveniently

  I have a general use laptop. I use it for games, development, and web surfing. I've just installed SQL Server 2008 with Analysis, Reporting, and Error reporting, as well as any of the other options on the installer. I also have a default instance of SQL server as well as a named instance. When I'm not doing development, I'd like to shut down these services conveniently. I'm thinking that a batch file would be good. What are the commands to shut these services down and release the associated memory and resources? It appears that: net stop MSSQLSERVER seems to stop the MSSQLSERVER instance. What about the other services?

• Purely technical reasons for PHP as a first choice?

  I know this may come off as a flame-y / troll-y, but I hope you will take my word for it that it's not my intention. I am just trying to understand the PHP phenomenon. After looking at the many technical issues with the language design of PHP, I am hard pressed to find any redeeming technical advantages where PHP surpasses all other languages. Before coming to the conclusion that there would simply be no reason to choose PHP as a development language on purely technical grounds, I would like to ask, if all non-technical factors were equal (such as what language the developers already know, what languages the hosting provider offers, language of existing code, cost, license, corporate fiat, etc.), would there be any type of new software system that would indicate making PHP a first choice for development? If so, what technical advantage does PHP have over all other languages that would cause you to choose it? EDIT: I am not interested in comparing PHP "out of the box" with other languages "out of the box". If PHP has a certain feature "out of the box" that another language has only after installing some readily available add-on, that is not considered an advantage for PHP for the purposes of this question.

• Any idea for a master thesis in software engineering

  Hi! I have to choose a thesis for my master degree. Time is limited to about 6 months. Do you have any idea? Any personal thesis that was successful? After searching around for some time now, i see the most famous topics are related to artificial intelligence, but i don't want something like that, because most of it would be just theory and boring. A lot of students present these kind of studies because those are the most difficult. I would prefer something that does not necessary include that mathematical complexity but which is an everyday-life topic, and gives concrete ideas, hypothesis, or solutions to some actual problems. Hope i gave my whole idea: i am looking for something that is different from the majority of what all students do, and able to impress the audience... :) I would really really appreciate any your suggestion, Thank you!

• ASP.NET developers turning to Visual WebGui for rich management system

  When The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) decided they needed a web application to allow easy access to the expenses management system they initially went to ASP.NET web forms combined with CSS. The outcome, however, was not satisfying enough as it appeared bland and lacked in richness. So in order to enrich the UI and give the web application some glitz, Visual WebGui was selected. Visual WebGui provided the needed richness and the familiar Windows look and feel also made the transition for the desktop users very easy. The richer GUI of Visual WebGui compared to ASP.NET conveyed some initial concerns about performance. But the Visual WebGui performance turned out to be a surprising advantage as the website maintained good response times. Working with Visual WebGui required a paradigm shift for the development process as some of the usual methods of coding with ASP.NET did not apply. However, the transition was fairly easy due to the simplicity and intuitiveness of Visual WebGui as well as the good support and documentation. “The shift into a different development paradigm was eased by the Visual WebGui web forums which are very active thanks to a large, involved community. • BUILD 2013 Session&ndash;Testing Your C# Base Windows Store Apps

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/27/build-2013-sessionndashtesting-your-c-base-windows-store-apps.aspx Testing an application is not what most people consider fun and the number of situation that need to be tested seems to grow exponentially when building mobile apps.  That is why I found the topic of this session interesting.  When I found out that the speaker, Francis Cheung, was from the Patterns and Practices group I knew I was in the right place.  I have admired that team since I first met Ron Jacobs around 2001.  So what did Francis have to offer? He started off in a rather confusing who’s on first fashion.  It seems that one of his tester was originally supposed to give the talk, but then it was decided that it would be better to have someone who does development present a testing topic.  This didn’t hinder the content of the talk in the least.  He broke the process down in a logical manner that would be straight forward to understand if not implement. Francis hit the main areas we usually think of such as tombstoning, network connectivity and asynchronous code, but he approached them with tools they we may not have thought of until now.  He relied heavily on Fiddler to intercept and change the behavior of network requests. Then there are the areas you might not normal think to check.  This includes localization, accessibility and updating client code to a new version.  These are important aspects of your app that can severely impact how customers feel about your app.  Take the time to view this session and get a new appreciation for testing and where it fits in your development lifecycle. del.icio.us Tags: BUILD 2013,Testing,C#,Windows Store Apps,Fiddler

• The Cloud is STILL too slow!

  If you've been in the computing industry sufficiently long enough to remember dialup modems and other "ancient" technologies, you might be tempted to marvel at today's wonderfully powerful multicore PCs, ginormous disks, and blazingly fast networks.  Wow, you're in Internet Nirvana, right!  Well, no, not by a long shot.Considering the exponentially growing expectations of what the Web, that is, "the Cloud", is supposed to provide, today's Web/Cloud services are still way too slow.Already we are seeing cloud-enabled consumer devices that are stressing even the most advanced public network services.  Like the iPad and its competitors, ever more powerful smart-phones, and an imminent hoard of special purpose gadgets such as the proposed "cloud camera" (see http://gdgt.com/discuss/it-time-cloud-camera-found-out-cnr/ ).And at the same time that the number and type of cloud services are growing, user tolerance for even the slightest of download delays is rapidly decreasing.  Ten years ago Web developers followed the "8-Second Rule", (average time a typical Web user would tolerate for a page to download and render).  Not anymore; now it's less than 3 seconds, and only a bit longer for mobile devices (see http://www.technologyreview.com/files/54902/GoogleSpeed_charts.pdf).  How spoiled we've become!Google, among others, recognizes this problem and is working to encourage the development of a faster Web (see http://www.technologyreview.com/web/32338/). They, along with their competitors and ISPs, will have to encourage and support significantly better Web performance in order to provide the types of services envisioned for the Cloud.  How will they do this? Through the development of faster components, better use of caching technologies, and the really tough one - exploiting parallelism. Not that parallel technologies like multicore processors are hard to build...we already have them.  It's just that we're not that good yet at using them effectively.  And if we don't get better, users will abandon cloud-based services...in less than 3 seconds.

• mysql my.cnf ignored

  [issue] I'm trying to modify a my.cnf value on my production server but the changes aren't taking effect after a sudo service mysql restart, using an exact copy of the my.cnf (downloaded and replaced original) on my development server the changes made are visible from show variables in mysql commandline. my.cnf is located at /etc/mysql/my.cnf sudo find / -name my.cnf /etc/mysql/my.cnf So only one file exists on the entire system.. Production is ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit Development is ubuntu 11.10 32bit Mysql versions are 5.1.61 & 5.1.62 respectively. • Cheap, Awesome, Programmer-friendly City in Europe for 1 year Study Hiatus?

  Next year I'll be 21. I'll have 3 years of professional experience under my belt (with a one year break as a soldier). I'm planning to take 2 to 3 years off. Instead of going to a university I'm planning to work on personal projects and learn on my own. I'm looking for suggestions of great, cheap, programmer-friendly (e.g. lots of cafes, ordered food, parks, blazing fast internet connection, wifi, lots of people that speak English) cities around the world, (and specifically in Europe as I also have european citizenship). If you can supply with an estimate cost of living for that city, or a site for comparisons that will also be great. edit: I'm living in Tel Aviv, ~20 highest cost of living city in the world, so statistically speaking almost all the cities are cheaper.

• Is Openness at the heart of the EU Digital Agenda?

  At OpenForum Europe Summit 2010, to be held in Brussels, Autoworld, 11 Parc du Cinquantenaire on Thursday 10 June 2010, a number of global speakers will discuss whether it indeed provides an open digital market as a catalyst for economic growth and if it will deliver a truly open e-government and digital citizenship (see Summit 2010). In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. Much excitement surrounds open standards, given that Kroes is a staunch believer. The EU's Digital Agenda promises IT standardization reform in Europe and vows to recognize global standards development organizations (fora/consortia) by 2010. However, she avoided the term "open standards" in her new strategy. Markets are, of course, asking why she is keeping her cards tight on this crucial issue. Following her speech, Professor Yochai Benkler, award-winning author of "The Wealth of Networks", and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, appointed by the UK Government to work alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help transform public access to UK Government information join dozens of speakers in the quest to analyse, entertain and challenge European IT policy, people, and documents. • Differences in memory consumption between two identical D7 sites?

  I'm running Drupal on a news site that has a lot of different View blocks on the front page (~5 total, all cached). In trying to reduce the memory footprint of the site, I've checked out source from SVN to a local development install to try and convert some of those blocks into more optimized code. Here's the weird thing. Devel module lists memory consumption at 50mb on the Production site (Running Nginx, PHP 5.2.17, XCache and Zend Optimizer.) but only 14mb on my development site (Running Apache2, PHP 5.2.13 and XCache). These are nearly-identical versions of the same site — frankly, the Production site should use even less memory as I've disabled some of the modules running on the Dev site. Any idea why this might be the case?

• New Year, New Position, New Opportunity and Adventures!

  2010 was an incredible year of change for me. On the personal side, we celebrated our youngest daughter’s first birthday and welcomed my oldest daughter into our family (both my girls are adopted). Professionally, I put on the first ever Prairie Developer Conference, the 3rd annual Winnipeg Code Camp, the Software Development and Evolution Conference, continued to build the technology community in Winnipeg, was awarded a Microsoft MVP award for the 4th year, created a certification program to help my employer, Protegra, attain Microsoft Partner status, and had great project work throughout the year. So now its 2011, and I’m looking ahead to new challenges and opportunities with a new employer. Starting in mid February I’ll be the Microsoft Practice Lead with Online Business Systems, a Microsoft partner here in Winnipeg! I’m very excited about working with such great people and helping continue delivering quality solutions and consulting that the organization has become known for. 2010 was great, but 2011 is shaping up to be a banner year both personally and professionally!

The headliner of the conference was Tomas' keynote announcement of the fully featured and fully enabled MySQL 5.6 Release Candidate.  This new article on the MySQL DevZone summarizes all of the great new features ready for Community adoption, all MySQL Engineering blogs and where and how to download all of the bits. As always, early adoption and feedback on the 5.6 RC is appreciated and the sooner we get your feedback the sooner we release the "ready for production" sanctioned GA product.    Also available now, Cluster 7.3 provides support for Foreign Keys, node.js NoSQL access to underlying data and a new Auto Installer that helps you quickly and easily get up and running with Cluster 7.2 and 7.3.  The 7.3 downloads are provided in the first 7.3 Development Milestone Release (under "Development Releases" tab) and via the MySQL Labs. Oracle also announced key new additions to MySQL Enterprise Edition: New policy-based compliance Auditing. MySQL Enterprise Edition Audit adds policy-based auditing compliance to existing MySQL applications without the need to change any code.  This new plugin is available for MySQL 5.5.28 and higher; existing MySQL Enterprise Edition customers can download the upgrade from the My Oracle Support portal and all can download for evaluation from Oracle's Software Delivery Cloud. New MySQL Enterprise High Available additions provide even more options for ensuring MySQL applications remain available and running a their peak: Oracle Linux + DRBD Oracle Solaris Clustering for MySQL All in all, the first MySQL Connect conference was a great success and with refinements planned in response to attendee, sponsor and speaker feedback we expect it to grow and improve going forward.   Exciting news. I am proud to announce that Glenn Block from Microsoft  will be coming all the way from Seattle to Scotland on the 12th March to talk to you!. Glenn is a PM on the WCF team working on Microsoft’s future HTTP and REST stack and has been involved in some pretty exciting and ground-breaking Microsoft development mind-shifts in recent times. Don’t miss the chance to hear him speak and ask him questions. Brief history of Glenn Prior to WCF he was a PM on the new Managed Extensibility Framework in .NET 4.0. Glenn has a breadth of experience both inside and outside Microsoft developing software solutions for ISVs and the enterprise. Glenn has also been very active in involving folks from the community in the development of software at Microsoft. This has included shipping several products under open source licenses, as well as assisting other teams looking to do so. Glenn is also a frequent speaker at local and international events and user groups.  When he's not working and playing with technology, he spends his time with his wife and daughter either at their home in Seattle or at one of the local coffee shops. • JDeveloper Users - We Want to Hear Your Opinion

  One of our goals as product managers is to make sure that customers are happy with the product we deliver. We only get to interact with a small number of developers in a face-to-face way and get feedback and there are a lot of other developers who we don't get a chance to meet. To try and get more complete input, we created an online survey that will help us learn about usage patterns and the level of satisfaction JDeveloper users have with various features and aspects of their work with the tool.  It would be great if you could take 5 minutes and complete this online survey here. The survey is aimed at anyone using JDeveloper, whether for ADF development or any other type of development and for any version.  Hopefully this survey will help us deliver a product that better answers your needs and will help us make your JDeveloper usage experience better. Note - this is a new survey which is unrelated to the previous one that was focused on learning needs. Once you are done with this survey and if you would like to provide more feedback, note that we are also looking specifically for Java developers who are using Mac, as well as developers who are interested in building extensions to JDeveloper.
