  • Deeply nested subqueries for traversing trees in MySQL

    I have a table in my database where I store a tree structure using the hybrid Nested Set (MPTT) model (the one which has lft and rght values) and the Adjacency List model (storing parent_id on each node). my_table (id, parent_id, lft, rght, alias) This question doesn't relate to any of the MPTT aspects of the tree but I thought I'd leave it in in case anyone had a good idea about how to leverage that. I want to convert a path of aliases to a specific node. For example: "users.admins.nickf" would find the node with alias "nickf" which is a child of one with alias "admins" which is a child of "users" which is at the root. There is a unique index on (parent_id, alias). I started out by writing the function so it would split the path to its parts, then query the database one by one: SELECT `id` FROM `my_table` WHERE `parent_id` IS NULL AND `alias` = 'users';-- 1 SELECT `id` FROM `my_table` WHERE `parent_id` = 1 AND `alias` = 'admins'; -- 8 SELECT `id` FROM `my_table` WHERE `parent_id` = 8 AND `alias` = 'nickf'; -- 37 But then I realised I could do it with a single query, using a variable amount of nesting: SELECT `id` FROM `my_table` WHERE `parent_id` = ( SELECT `id` FROM `my_table` WHERE `parent_id` = ( SELECT `id` FROM `my_table` WHERE `parent_id` IS NULL AND `alias` = 'users' ) AND `alias` = 'admins' ) AND `alias` = 'nickf'; Since the number of sub-queries is dependent on the number of steps in the path, am I going to run into issues with having too many subqueries? (If there even is such a thing) Are there any better/smarter ways to perform this query?

  • MDX: How to exclude ancestors from being returned in this query?

    I have this MDX query: Exists([Group].[Group Hierarchy].allmembers, {[Group].[Group Full Name].&[121 - Group A], [Group].[Group Full Name].&[700000 - Group C]}) ... which works fine EXCEPT that it returns all of the ancestors of the specified groups as well. What I want is to return JUST the groups from the hierarchy with the specified Group Names (this is a type 2 dimension so there may be many at different levels). Any ideas?

  • INET_ATON() and INET_NTOA() in PHP?

    I want to store IP addresses in my database, but I also need to use them throughout my application. I read about using INET_ATON() and INET_NTOA() in my MySQL queries to get a 32-bit unsigned integer out of an IP address, which is exactly what I want as it will make searching through the database faster than using char(15). The thing is, I can't find a function that does the same sort of thing in PHP. The only thing I came across is: http://php.net/manual/en/function.ip2long.php So I tested it: $ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']; echo ip2long($ip); And it outputs nothing. In the example they gave it seems to work, but then again I'm not exactly sure if ip2long() does the same thing as INET_ATON(). Does someone know a PHP function that will do this? Or even a completely new solution to storing an IP address in a database? Thanks.

    Is there a better way to do this? I tried to loop over the partsToChange collection and build up the where clause, but it ANDs them together instead of ORing them.     I was creating a new table today in 10g when I noticed an interesting behavior. Here is an example of what I did: CREATE TABLE test_table ( field_1 INTEGER PRIMARY KEY ); Oracle will by default, create a non-null unique index for the primary key. I double checked this. After a quick check, I find a unique index name SYS_C0065645. Everything is working as expected so far. Now I did this: CREATE TABLE test_table ( field_1 INTEGER, CONSTRAINT pk_test_table PRIMARY KEY (field_1) USING INDEX (CREATE INDEX idx_test_table_00 ON test_table (field_1))); After describing my newly created index idx_test_table_00, I see that it is non-unique. I tried to insert duplicate data into the table and was stopped by the primary key constraint, proving that the functionality has not been affected. It seems strange to me that Oracle would allow a non-unique index to be used for a primary key constraint. Why is this allowed?

For any value of Table1.u_name, there are 0 to many entries in Table2 that Table2.u_name equals to that value. For any value of Table1.u_name, there are 0 to 1 entries in Table2 that Table2.u_name equals to that value AND Table2.u_type='S' What I want: Use Table1.u_name to get Table1.*, Table2.u_admin where Table1.u_name=Tabl2.u_name and Table2.u_type='S'. If there is no such entry in Table2 we still need to get Table1.* Please help give me some hints. Thank you so much!

I guess it forgets table names once the JOIN is done but then how can I refer to the column id that belongs to the table Parts?

  • Error when restoring SSAS cube: MemberKeyesUnique element at line xxx cannot appear under (...)/Hier

    Hi, I'm getting this error when trying to restore an SSAS database from a backup: The ddl2:MemberKeysUnique element at line 63, column 4862 (namespace http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine/2) cannot appear under Load/ObjectDefinition/Dimension/Hierarchies/Hierarchy. Google hasn't turned up any helpful solutions. (a lot of people found that installing SP2 made the error go away but this has always previously worked in our environment) I don't really understand what the error means. Can somebody interpret or suggest a fix? Thanks, Phil
