• Interface Builder error: IBXMLDecoder: The value for key is too large to fit into a 32 bit integer

  I'm working with Robert Payne's fork of PSMTabBarControl that works with IB 3.2 (thanks BTW Robert!): http://codaset.com/robertjpayne/psmtabbarcontrol/. The demo application works fine on 64-bit systems, but when I try to open the XIB file in Interface Builder on a 32-bit system I get: IBXMLDecoder: The value (4654500848) for key (myTrackingRectTag) is too large to fit into a 32 bit integer Building the app as 32 bit works, but then running it gives: PSMTabBarControlDemo[9073:80f] * -[NSKeyedUnarchiver decodeInt32ForKey:]: value (4654500848) for key (myTrackingRectTag) too large to fit in 32-bit integer Not sure if this is a generic IB issue that can occur when moving between 64 and 32 bit systems, or if this is a more specific issue with this code. Has anyone else run into this?

  Is it possible for a child process to inherit a handle from its parent process if one process is 32-bit and the other is 64-bit? HANDLE is a 64 bit type on Win64 and a 32 bit type on Win32, which suggests that even it were supposed to be possible in all cases, there would be some cases where it would fail: a 64-bit parent process, a 32-bit child process, and a handle that can't be represented in 32 bits. Or is naming the object the only way for a 32-bit process and a 64-bit process to get a handle for the same object?

  To pop up the UAC dialog in Vista when writing to the HKLM registry hive, we opt to not use the Win32 Registry API, as when Vista permissions are lacking, we'd need to relaunch our entire application with administrator rights. Instead, we do this trick: ShellExecute(hWnd, "runas" /* display UAC prompt on Vista */, windir + "\\Reg", "add HKLM\\Software\\Company\\KeyName /v valueName /t REG_MULTI_TZ /d ValueData", NULL, SW_HIDE); This solution works fine, besides that our application is a 32-bit one, and it runs the REG.EXE command as it would be a 32-bit app using the WOW compatibility layer! :( If REG.EXE is ran from the command line, it's properly ran in 64-bit mode. This matters, because if it's ran as a 32-bit app, the registry keys will end up in the wrong place due to registry reflection. So is there any way to launch a 64-bit app programmatically from a 32-bit app and not have it run using the WOW64 subsystem like its parent 32-bit process (i.e. a "*" suffix in the Task Manager)?

  I have a count register, which is made up of two 32-bit unsigned integers, one for the higher 32 bits of the value (most significant word), and other for the lower 32 bits of the value (least significant word). What is the best way in C to combine these two 32-bit unsigned integers and then display as a large number? In specific: leastSignificantWord = 4294967295; //2^32-1 printf("Counter: %u%u", mostSignificantWord,leastSignificantWord); This would print fine. When the number is incremented to 4294967296, I have it so the leastSignificantWord wipes to 0, and mostSignificantWord (0 initially) is now 1. The whole counter should now read 4294967296, but right now it just reads 10, because I'm just concatenating 1 from mostSignificantWord and 0 from leastSignificantWord. How should I make it display 4294967296 instead of 10?

  Millions of questions already on the web about how to tell whether the OS is 64-bit, but not whether IE and/or Java runtime is 64-bit. Some background: I installed 64-bit Win 7, and IE installed automatically with it from CD; I didn't download IE. I did download Java runtime. Mouseover tips in Control Panel!Programs shows it as: "Java 32-bit Java(TM) Control Panel" Then I went to http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and that page says... We have detected you may be viewing this page in a 32-bit browser. If you use 32-bit and 64-bit browsers interchangeably, you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java in order to have the Java plug-in for both browsers. But I cannot tell in the aftermath whether my Java is 64-bit. Evidently the "Java(TM) Control Panel" is, but I don't know if that's the same as the runtime. (I'm afraid to ask on the offical Java forums, because they're such a-holes.) Also, How do I issue a command to the OS to tell whether this IE is 64-bit? Help!About doesn't say on that. Thanks.

  Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life? • Fastest way to calculate an X-bit bitmask?

  I have been trying to solve this problem for a while, but couldn't with just integer arithmetic and bitwise operators. However, I think its possible and it should be fairly easy. What am I missing? The problem: to get an integer value of arbitrary length (this is not relevant to the problem) with it's X least significant bits sets to 1 and the rest to 0. For example, given the number 31, I need to get an integer value which equals 0x7FFFFFFF (31 least significant bits are 1 and the rest zeros). Of course, using a loop OR-ing a shifted 1 to an integer X times will do the job. But that's not the solution I'm looking for. It should be more in the direction of (X << Y - 1), thus using no loops.

• Bit manipulation, permutate bits

  Hi. I am trying to make a loop that loops through all different integers where exactly 10 of the last 40 bits are set high, the rest set low. The reason is that I have a map with 40 different values, and I want to sum all different ways ten of these values can be multiplied. (This is just out of curiosity, so it's really the "bitmanip"-loop that is of interest, not the sum as such.) If I were to do this with e.g. 2 out of 4 bits, it would be easy to set all manually, 0011 = 7, 0101 = 5, 1001 = 9, 0110 = 6, 1010 = 10, 1100 = 12, but with 10 out of 40 I can't seem to find a method to generate these effectively. I tried, starting with 1023 ( = 1111111111 in binary), finding a good way to manipulate this, but with no success. I've been trying to do this in C++, but it's really the general method(if any) that is of interest. I did some googling, but with little success, if anyone has a good link, that would of course be appreciated too. :)

  I'm dealing with a problem which needs to work with a lot of data. Currently its' values are represented as unsigned int. I know that real values do not exceed some limit, say 1000. That means that I can use unsigned short to store it. One profit is that it'll use less space. Do I have to pay for it by loosing in performance? Another assumption. I decided to store data as short but all calling functions use int, so I need to convert between these datatypes when storing/extracting values. Wiil the performance lost be dramatic? Third assumption. Due to great wish to econom memory I decided to use not short but just 10 bits packed into array of unsigned int. What will happen in this case comparing with previous ones?

• Making a 64 bit shared library that dynamically links to a 32 bit library on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  Update: After some more reading I see that this problem is totally general, you can't mix architectures in the same process, so 64 bit Java cannot dlopen() a 32 bit library like FMOD. Is there any possible workaround for this, keeping in mind I'm writing my own C interface to the FMOD library? I need to make a 64-bit dylib on Max OS X because Java Native Access only likes 64-bit libraries on 64-bit machines. The problem is, my C source code dynamically includes FMOD which on Mac only provides 32-bit dylibs. • MySQL-python 1.2.3 and OS X 10.5: 64- or 32-bit?

  I've been happily using Django and MySQL in development on an existing machine running OS X 10.4 Tiger, and have set up a similar environment in 10.5 Leopard on a new 64-bit MacBook, with a working MySQL and Python 2.6.4. However, now I want them to communicate, easy_install MySQL-python gave ld warnings that the file is not of the required architecture, which led me to test my Python 2.4.6 install (from the Mac OS X disc image): >>> import sys >>> sys.maxint 2147483647 Ah. So my Python install appears to be 32-bit and (I think?) won't install MySQL-python for my 64-bit MySQL. There are lots of hacks out there for MySQL-python on OS X (mostly 1.2.2), but - after hours of reading - I'm pretty sure they won't fix this architecture mismatch. So I'm stuck because I can't decide whether to: give up, remove the 64-bit MySQL install (thorough methods, please?) and use the 32-bit MySQL disc image instead; re-install Python in 64-bit mode from the tarball, --with-universal archs-64-bit and --enable-universalsdk= as detailed in Python.org's 2.6 news. So my questions for anyone who has encountered this issue are: Is installing 64-bit Python on OS X 10.5 worth bothering with? If so, (naive, lazy question!) how are the two required arguments combined? If I just skip along in 32-bit (as on my working setup) what am I missing? I'm after a hassle-free install that's easy to reproduce on other machines (possible student use) so I'd really welcome your opinions, please!

• USB mouse does not work on boot

  Is there a Generic USB TouchScreen Driver 12.04? Device 03eb:201c I've been looking for 4 days solid (not very skilled) and can't find a solution. I have a generic tablet: C97- Atom N2600 9.7" 2GB 32GB Bluetooth WiFi WebCam Ext.3G Windows 7 Tablet PC Using 12.04 and cannot find a driver. I installed android and the touchscreen works but still lots of other bugs. Oh well, stuck with Windows 7 and not happy about it. Will keep trying, but too much time wasted already. • SQL SERVER – Fix: Error: 8117: Operand data type bit is invalid for sum operator

  Here is the very interesting error I received from a reader. He has very interesting question. He attempted to use BIT filed in the SUM aggregation function and he got following error. He went ahead with various different datatype (i.e. INT, TINYINT etc) and he was able to do the SUM but with BIT he faced the problem. Error Received: Msg 8117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Operand data type bit is invalid for sum operator.
