• Linux AMD-FX 8350 temperature monitoring

  I’m trying to get the CPU temperature for my AMD-FX8350 on Debian Squeeze. I ran sensors-detect and then sensors, but I only get my motherboard sensors (it8720-isa-0228). • Htpc aka "Media Center": cheap and *silent*?

  It may be me, or the place I live (Italy), but it seems pretty hard to get a build or a prebuilt nettop or a laptop that fits the need. I need something silent able to playback all h.264 fullhd content without stuttering, and well (and not loosing the hw acceleration because of softsubs...) silent not ugly silent and (possibly) cheap. I'm going the linux route, therefore i'm moving towards a cpu-based or nvida-integrated solution (i don't think ati hw accelerated playback - or the intel "hd" acceleration - is useable yet). Ion nettop; it's either the Acer Revo (but here it's incredibly pricey and it's hard to find the dualcore version) or the Asrock Ion 330, that in the current version is rated "silent" at 26Db. 26. Sounds pretty noisy to me!!! the previous version was even worse. was this product really aimed at htpc market?? the Dell Zino - i think it's ATI based unfortunately. Laptop: correct me if I'm wrong: sub 600€/$ units are quite loud under full load (because of the tiny fans). ULW laptops are indeed quite similar: tiniest fans = high pitched noise and the cpu still lacks power for non hd-accelerated video decoding Handmade build: little money can be saved with underpowered cpus, a low-midrange cpu would help in the case of non-hw-accelerated content the cases are quite pricey the PSU one has to get ranges between 100/150 €/$ minimum to keep the noise down a low-mid build, all included, sums up to over 650 €/$ for a still-looking-ugly-unit, without the blu-ray drive. Please help. What do you advise on this? ;) Am I ignoring laptops too much, maybe? Are low-priced Acers that noisy/high pitched under full load?

• New Computer freezing up at random

  Since I built my system about 4 weeks ago I'v been getting random freezes, Sometimes it can happen directly after startup and sometimes it wont freeze up for 3-4 days of 24/7 running. It seems to be happening under all stress loads but mainly when the CPU is under 10% load. It doesn't give me a BSOD or anything, it simply just freezes and repeats the last sound before the freeze until I shut it down by the power button. I'v re-seated everything in the system except the CPU, Cleaned the RAM sockets and gold fittings. None of the components have been clocked above their factory settings as of yet, don't want to overclock them until I sort out these freezes. Temps are all well under the rated max temps, the highest the temps have been are below CPU: Low load: 16-21°C Full Load (100%) 40-43°C *(From HWMonitor by CPUID) GPU 1: Low Load: 25-30°C Full Load (100%): 45-50°C GPU 2: Low Load: 23-27°C Full Load (100%): 45-50°C *(GPU Temps from Catalyst Control Center) General Case temps Rear: 18-20°C Mid: 20-21°C Front (HDD/SSD Bays): 14-19°C (Case temps may be a little off as it's from the Kaze master pro fan controller) I have Un-installed EVERY driver for Motherboard, GPU & Soundcard and Re-installed twice. Windows is all up to date. To date i'v tried the following Running Memtest for 24 hrs straight, No errors Running Memtest on each individual RAM modules, No errors Reseated everything except the CPU Cleaned DIMM Sockets and Gold inputs Tested the Graphics cards 1 at a time Re-arranged all the SATA devices to run on Chipset controlled ports Re-installing all drivers OS: Win7 Professional 64bit Motherboard: ASRock X79 Extreme9 CPU: i7 3930k 3.2GHz GPU: Sapphire 7950 OC Edition V2 (2 card Crossfire) RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws Z F3-17000CL11Q-16GBZL 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 Boot Drive: OCZ Agility 4 128GB Data Drive 1: Western Digital Black 2TB Data Drive 2: Western Digital Black 2TB Data Drive 3: Western Digital Green 3TB Power Supply: Corsair AX1200 Gold

• USB keyboard stopped working in Ubuntu with error -71

  I have a usb keyboard which was working perfectly till now (about a year since i have been regularly using ubuntu). It suddenly stopped working. It stopped working when I connected a USB HDD. Now the keyboard works randomly .. working for a while and then stops working for a longer time. • What do different patterns mean in Windows 8 file copy dialog

  When copying or extracting files, Windows 8 shows the chart with the speed of the operation. I noticed several patterns: Randomness, High speed at the beginning, then low speed during the most part of the operation, Mostly constant speed. 1. Randomness/nice mountains. 2. High speed at the beginning, then low speed during the most part of the operation. 3. Low speed at the beginning, then high speed during the most part of the operation. (Similar to the previous image, but inverted) 3. Mostly constant speed. (Same as previous image, but without the fast start) I'm curious, what each of those patterns mean? Do some indicate that there may be a problem with hard disk performance? Why the nearly constant speed is so rare, even when copying a single large file from and to a spinning drive, or when copying a single large file or a bunch of small files from and to an SSD?

  Here is a bit about our setup: We have 2x Smart-UPS RT 6000 XL units with network management cards We are running Powerchute from a network server Powerchute is connected to the management cards of both UPSs UPSs are set to do a graceful shutdown via Powerchute when the battery duration is under 20 minutes We also have a command file that runs with Powerchute Although our setup is redundant we do not have an equal load on each server due to APC switches for single power devices The problem is that as we do not have an equal load on each server the batteries drain at different rates. This means that the UPSs both get to the specified low battery duration at completely different times. The problem here is that UPS 1 may have run down to 5 minutes and is in desperate need of initiating a Powerchute shutdown - UPS 2 still has 25 minutes of runtime so no shutdown is initiated. Consequently UPS 1 goes down and takes all the servers with and then shuts down UPS 2 as well! What we need to happen are 1 of either 2 things: Powerchute initiates the shutdown as soon as either UPS reaches the 20 minutes low battery duration setting - and doesnt wait for both The UPS with the heavier load expends its entire battery but does not shutdown both UPSs and lets the load be switched across to the UPS that still has runtime remaining. That way when the UPS that still has runtime reaches its low battery duration it can proceed with the graceful shutdown via Powerchute. Hope that makes sense, any help is greatly appreciated!

• What is the replacement of the floppy

  While CD (and to an lesser extend DVD) disks have reached the price-point of the floppy, they have one significant downside, it is WORM (Write-Once Read-Many) media, allowing it to be used only one single time, and you need to be explicit in writing the data to the actual media (you need to burn it.) While CD-RW solves the "use only once" problem, it is still EWORM (Erasable Write-Once Read-Many) media, which still means you need to be explicit in writing the data to the actual media (you still need to burn it.), and also, you still need to be very explicit in erasing it. (simple delete is not possible.) Okay, we can use a CD-RW in Packet Writing mode, however the downside to that, is that this mode is not very universal, and also, not the native mode of the media. Now, while USB-sticks and SD-cards may not have the poblems of the CD, they have a whole other kind of problem: their PRICE! USB-sticks and SD cards are generally 10 to 100 times as expensive as diskettes per piece. SD-cards, in addition have an added problem, because they need a reader to operate. While it is a very standard thing, it is not default equipment on the computer like the CD drive or USB port (or historically the diskette drive). You wouldn't give out an USB stick or SD card with a 100 kB text file, not caring weither you would get it back or not. So, to recap: CD & DVD are basically WORM media. SD cards and USB sticks are relatively expensive. SD cards also needs special readers. Diskettes have a very low data-rate Diskettes have a very low storage capacity. Now, is there a media out there that solves all these problems, or is there a way to get (very) small USB sticks or SD cards for a very low price (as they're the closest thing to diskette).

• What does opening a serial port do?

  What does opening the standard PC serial port do, in electrical terms (i.e. what voltages on which pins)? For example, the ancient VB6 program which controls an apparatus I am tasked with maintaining toggles .PortOpen to control some TTL. The connection only used 2 pins (bad solders fell apart), so which pins do I solder to? The only labels / documentation refer to pins 7 and 9, saying 0V and 5V parenthetically, but does .PortOpen really just put 5V between RI and RTS?. As a post script, this isn't the weirdest thing about the set up. The TTL I referred to above also connects to an instrument via a BNC to DB9 (!), with only 1 pin used. I guess there was an assumption about a common ground, since the BNC shielding isn't connected to the GND pin? The connection is to the instrument's 'foot pedal' pin, it was a way to remotely trigger the device. Update According to this page, the DTR and RTS pins can go high when the port is opened. If they were so configured, they will subsequently go low when the port is closed. If DTR and RTS are not enabled, opening the port should set both to low (and keep them low).

• Apply LADSPA filter to only one channel of multichannel output with Alsa and PulseAudio

  I want to apply a filter, specifically SWH's glame-bandpass-iir, to only one of several output channels. I want unfiltered output to go to the front, rear and LFE channels with bandpass filtered output for the center channel. I'm assuming that this needs to be done with Alsa's /etc/asound.conf but I cannot understand the documentation well enough to figure out how. If there is a better way, via PulseAudio, Jack or whatever, I'm open to whatever works. Thanks.

• How can I automatically switch to USB headset when plugged in?

  Whenever I plugged in my old audio jack headset, sound was immediately diverted from my speakers to the headset speakers, and the microphone was immediately available. When I plug in my new USB headset, I have to open Sound Preferences and switch both input and output to the headset. Is there any way to make this happen automatically? I'm using a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi laptop, Maverick and a Logitech H330 USB headset.

• Make alsamixer changes permanent

  I have installed ubuntu GNOME 14.04 in my macbook Pro 13" mid 2012, and something is wrong with the headphones jack, a red led is on and it just can be turned off with the alsamixer command and muting a special section (I'm sorry for not remember the setting, I'm on OS X for work reasons) I already know how to fix it, but I want to know how to save the setting in the alsamixer, because with every reboot the red led is back.   Question: I see [ 20.473125] composite sync not supported and several such entries when I run dmesg. What do they mean? Background: I'm trying to debug a problem where my laptop won't suspend. Since acpi seems happy and I can suspend easily from the command line, I've turned to tracking down all boot-up errors/warnings. • Career Advice: finding challenging work in software and web development

  Having left my physics degree early, I started out in the realm of web design / front end web development and was able to get work quite quickly. I moved on to spend a chunk of my time on servers and gained experience with frameworks like Wordpress and Drupal, then the likes of Codeigniter and CakePHP and became comfortable in Debian-based and RHEL/CentOS environments. I ventured in to iOS development and published a couple of native apps to the app store too! I have started to spend a good deal of my time writing Python and have invested a little time in Django. The problem is, I still spend a fair chunk of my time doing more front end web development (writing markup and CSS for site themes, design-lead JavaScript, small applications for which application architecture and software engineering are relatively unimportant or too time consuming to invest in) in my job. What I want to do is really exercise the systematic/logical portion of my brain and tackle challenging problems on a daily basis. I want to have to care about big-oh running times, modularity in software, DRY, performance tuning and development methodologies. I want to work for a firm whose clients say: "Yes, these things are important to us and we'll pay you to get them right." But it is difficult: I have no formal training and am potentially becoming a jack of all trades. Not that being a jack of many trades is necessarily a bad thing, but the scope of work I find myself involved in is far too broad. And, there are only so many hours in a day outside of work! My question is: where do I go from here? I am starting to work on a few open source projects and have started to publish content to my blog. But this isn't likely to make it past the recruitment consultants and HR departments of many-a-firm. And I do not, for example, work in a team that practices agile methodologies, so how do I get work in such a team to gain experience? While I have been responsible for implementing version control and some solid working practices into our current environment, there is only so far I can go in this context. What would convince you that i'm worth taking a risk? What would convince you that i'll have caught up the other guys in your employ in next to no time?

• How does one set up a MIDI keyboard

  I would like to set up my keyboard via my midi-sport 2x2, I've plugged everything in and even installed the midisport-firmware package which was not automatically installed for some reason. The goal is to have the computer produce a piano sound when keys of the keyboard are hit. If you can make this work without jack, that would be good too.   Following new Worklist features are available on E-Business Suite 12.1.3 via Patch 13646173. Ability to view comments on top of a notification If an action is performed on a notification such as Reassign, Request for Information or Provide Information, the recipient of the notification will see who performed the last action and the associated comment on top of the notification. Reassigning a request for information notification If an approver requests more information on a notification from it's submitter, the submitter now has two options Answer Request for More Information Transfer Request for More Information If the submitter thinks the requested information can be provided by another user, he/she can transfer the request to the other user. Please note that only Transfer is supported for Request for More Information. Once transferred, the submitter cannot access the notification and provide the requested information. Use actual sent date when reassigning a notification The Sent field in notification header always showed the date on which the notification was first created. If the notification was later reassigned, the Sent date was not updated to show the last action date. This caused problems in following scenario Approval notification was sent to JACK on 01-JAN-2012 JACK waited for 10 days before reassigning to JILL on 10-JAN-2012 JILL does not see the notification as sent on 10-JAN-2012, instead sees it as sent on 01-JAN-2012 Although the notification was originally created on 01-JAN-2012, it was sent to JILL only on 10-JAN-2012 The enhancement now shows the correct sent date in Worklist and Notification Details page. Figure 1 - Depicts all the above 3 features Related Action History for response required notification So far it was possible to embed Action History of an response-required notification into another FYI notification using #RELATED_HISTORY attribute (Please refer to Workflow Developer Guide for details about this attribute). The enhancement now enables developers to embed Action History of one response-required notification into another response-required notification. To embed Action History of one response-required notification into another, create message attribute #RELATED_HISTORY. To this attribute set a value during run-time in the following format. {TITLE}[ITEM_TYPE:ITEM_KEY]PROCESS_NAME:ACTIVITY_LABEL_NAMEThe TITLE, ITEM_TYPE and ITEM_KEY are optional values. TITLE is used as Related Action History header title. If TITLE is not present, then a default title "Related Action History" is shown. If ITEM_TYPE is present and ITEM_KEY is not, For Example: {TITLE}[ITEM_TYPE]PROCESS_NAME:ACTIVITY_LABEL_NAME , the Related Action History is populated from parent item type of the current item.
