Moving from local machine to group web development environment

I'm a freelancer who currently creates websites locally using something like MAMP to test websites locally before pushing them live with FTP. I'm looking at taking on my first employee, and I would need to be able to work on websites with them simultaneously. Can anyone explain or provide links to some good documentation on team workflow, or some key phrases I should be googling to get started on my set up? Unlike a lot of the stackoverflow community I've never worked in a dev team, large or small as I'm self taught so just need to know where to start. At present I'm thinking I need an extra computer to use as a server, then use Git or some such to version control files on that computer, as well as installing apache on it so it can be viewed by any computers in my current home network. Is this heading down the right track?

Ensure Mac's get correct machine name from DHCP?

I have a problem in our network where our Mac's occasionally get given the wrong machine name while, I guess, getting a new DHCP lease. The DHCP servers are Windows based - the bulk of our network is Windows, but we have some Linux machines and an increasing number of Macs. The problem specifics is that occasionally a Mac will take on the name of another machine in the network. For example, I have a new Macbook Pro. In the OSX setup is gets called "gomez", and initially starts up on the network with that name without any problems. But after a few days when the machine was restarted (it had several restarts in the meantime), it ended up being called "florrie", which is actually the name of another machine in another part of the network. All network ops work fine, and indeed you don't notice most of the time - it's only when you run apps like Perforce that require the hostname that you get problems. I'm sorry I don't have more info than that, but if I know what to look for I can dig out some more facts. Or any hints on checking the network setup would be useful.

Installing Ubuntu with Windows installer on Windows 8 machine

I have a Windows 8 Ultrabook. I downloaded Ubuntu (release 12.04) and installed using the Windows installer (Wubi). On rebooting at the end of the installation, I get the Windows boot screen asking if I want to boot into Windows 8 or Ubuntu. I select Ubuntu, and I get an error message that says Ubuntu is missing a boot file or has errors. Please let me know how to fix, or if my procedure is incorrect.

Proxy Settings per Machine not working on windows server 2008 R2 SP1

i have a very interesting problem and would appreciate any help for it. In my scenario i have scripts which bring up a VM inside a domain. Now i want to enable internet access for all the VM's and they go through a proxy. I interact with the VM's using remote sessions and use the credentials of a user which belogs to the domain administrator group. Now problem is that, i create VM's on the fly and destroy them as well,and the scripts i run during their lifetime require internet access on them.So i cannot statically set the proxy settings thus i used the option of Active Directory Group Policy Management. I initially used the "User Configuration" option and set the proxy, which worked like a charm when ever i log inside the machine. However it doesn't work if i use to remote login to the machine with an account which has not yet logged in to the machine. So i used this link to configure it to work on Per Machine, the group policy has worked fine and it reflects in the browser too. But i am not able to resolve any dns name like http://www.google.com or any internet based site. Any idea what i can do?

is gnome 3 is slow or my machine?

I have Dell XPS 15 i7 - 2360 with nvidia 525M (1GB) with optimus running Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit and have bumblebee installed for optimus. Recently I installed Gnome Shell to give it a try and found it sort of lagging under few scenarios though rest all is butter smooth. When I click on Date gnome 3 it appears as if a second has elapsed before the window is drawn. But others panel items like network or volume looks fine. In gnome 3 when I'm on dash with (window preview) if I remove any of the windows before the remaining windows reshuffle it takes about 2 seconds (noticeable clearly). Everything else is fine in both unity and Gnome Shell. What is causing this slowness? Is Gnome Shell is really slower?

"Error: Unknown error" when trying to start virtual machine from VMware server

Problem We are running VMware Server 2.0.0 build-116503 on a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server. There is a virtual machine installed, running Lotus Domino on Windows Server 2003. Ever since a sudden power failure last week, the virtual machine won't properly start up. When I run the command: vmrun -T server -h https://127.0.0.1:8333/sdk -u root -p jk2x2208 start "[standard] lotus/test.vmx" … after 30 seconds it displays: Error: Unknown error That's about everything I get. I know the command is right, since that's what we've used all the time. This has happened last Saturday after a scheduled backup shutdown, and somehow I was able to start it again. This week, it happened again, and I can't get it back up. Occasionally, I also get: Error: Cannot connect to the virtual machine When I get this, and I run the start command, it seemingly works. Why is this so random? Which configuration could have been messed up? What I've tried / other info I already shut down VMware itself with /etc/init.d/vmware stop. This works. I tried to start VMware again with /etc/init.d/vmware start. It complains that it's "not configured", which is why I had to rm /etc/vmware/not_configured, and then try to start again. There have been no software updates on the machine, and no configuration changes

Cannot connect to Internet after using Windows XP on dual booted machine

I have a dual booted Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10 box (AMD64) and have an unusual problem in that after connecting to the internet on Windows I cannot connect using Ubuntu. I don't believe it is actually a problem with configuring my Ubuntu connections because when I get up in the morning Ubuntu connects without any problem - this problem only exists (and persists for at least several hours) if I try to connect using Ubuntu immediately after connecting using Windows. I don't know how long the problem actually lasts because I usually just go to bed and then in the morning I can connect without problems. It is not problem with my provider's service as I have a second Ubuntu 10.10 box which I manually connect and works even when the dual booted one (on Ubuntu) won't. It is a particular problem with the dual booted box. A power down reset does not solve the problem.

I am new to Linux and I am having issues installing. I have tried multiple versions and all seem to give me the same issue. The LiveCD worked and I used it to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7. Here's a few screen shots of what I get. I am currently trying to install most the most recent version of Ubuntu. Everything has been running smoothly for a while until results from google code svn repository started showing up before the results from the actual website. Is there any way I could stop google from indexing google code repository content or at least make its rank lower than the web site? I am not talking sophisticated seo techniques but rather some simple settings if there are any.

MySQL Config on Large Machine

We have a Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server (64bit) running only MySQL 5.1.45 64-bit. It has 16G RAM and 10T of hard-drive space in RAID 10. We are having horrible performance from mysqld (85-100% CPU utilization). We were running a smaller machine with better performance, so I am assuming our my.ini file is not correct for our current machine. The my.ini file is as follows: [client] port=3306 [mysql] default-character-set=latin1 [mysqld] port=3306 basedir="D:/MySQL/" datadir="D:/MySQL/data" default-character-set=latin1 default-storage-engine=MYISAM sql-mode="" skip-innodb skip-locking max_allowed_packet = 1M max_connections=800 myisam_max_sort_file_size=5G myisam_sort_buffer_size=500M table_open_cache = 512 table_cache=8000 tmp_table_size=30M query_cache_size=50M thread_cache_size=128 key_buffer_size=3072M read_buffer_size=2M read_rnd_buffer_size=16M sort_buffer_size=2M #replication settings (this is the master) log-bin=log server-id = 1 Does anyone see anything wrong with this setup? For a machine with this much RAM, why in the world would mysqld eat up so much CPU? I know we can optimize some queries, etc., but it did run okay on a smaller machine, so I am pretty sure it is the config. Thanks in advance for any help.

I am trying to set up a ubuntu sever 12.04 on my machine

I am trying to set up a server on my home network which will eventually host rails. I am not great in linux server and i try to follow the prompt. I did succesfully get to a black screen which then prompts me to a username then password to then do anything ( assuming). However here what i try to do I kinda fellow his tutorial http://www.ubuntugeek.com/step-by-step-ubuntu-11-04-natty-lamp-server-setup.html but however the command where not 100% like him not in same order but same idea. Then i want to install ubuntu server with gui here the command i try with sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop Which however give me the following error Err http... inRelease w Failed to fetch ht... So been ignored if i try the desktop one i get E: unable to locate package ubuntu E: unable to locate package desktop So i am assuming i am not connected to the internet, so i try the following command sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces here the output it gives me and i know my gateway on my laptop is 192.168.1.1 address: 192.168.1.148 netmask: 255.255.255.0 network: 192.168.1.0 broadcasts: 192.168.1.255 gateway: 192.168.1.1 Btw i do not know the command to get out of vi and saving it. Atheros AR928X wireless connection makes neighbourhood machine drop off line

I have an Acer laptop with Atheros AR928X wireless card installed, supported by ath9k driver in the linux kernel. There are other 5 computers sharing wireless connection via a TPLink 150Mbit/s wireless router. At first I found the network is a little bit slower than it's in Windows7, which I accepted as it should be. However a very strange thing is, each time I connected to the router and downloaded stuff for a while, one of the computers running Windows7 in my local network dropped off from the router. And if I run my laptop under Windows7, everything is fine. What's even stranger is although the network becomes slower, only the certain computer drops and totally freezes in connection with the router. I'm not willing to conclude it's due to the unhealthy connection from my laptop to the router, however we have confirmed this for more than one times and there is no problem with the network when I'm running WIndows7. I'm extremely confused about what's going on. As a Linux user running Ubuntu over 5 years, I am awared that wireless driver in Linux is badly notorious of lack of stability and slow speed. But is it so bad that the unhealthy wireless connection can do damage to another computer in the same local network? I do see a lot of "Tx excessive retries" in iwconfig output. But how exactly does this happen ? Thanks for your help. Need to configure 4 Serial ports virtualbox guest win machine (my host is ubuntu 11.10)

I have an application that run's on winNT and requires the APCI-7500 card (a 4-multiport serial card), so I've installed the winNT thru virtualbox, but as i try to configure the serial ports I notice that virtualbox shows only 2 serial ports, only 2 tabs in the ports configuration section.How can I add the other 2 ports and configure them. My host is ubuntu 11.04 My guest is winNT My virtualbox version is 4.0.4_OSEr70112 I'll appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. installing crashes at halfway of 'copying files' showing an i\o device error error no5; there was problem in beginning of installation too, ubuntu was not detecting the installed windows 8. my system is a dell inspiron 5520 laptop ,with 1 tb WDC hard disk in GPT ,with EFI . my current partition is like 102 mb EFI SYSTEM partition 200 gb Windows 8 ntfs 22 gb root Ext4 8 gb swap 20 db home Ext4 680 gb ntfs Drive for storing all my files. i tried both dvd disc and usb drive, both resulted in same error. inbuild dell hardware diagnosis utility showed both hard disk and dvd drive as healthy what may be the reason and how can i install ubuntu along side my windows 8?

Foraward Traffic from local machine to proxy server using iptables

I am using Ubuntu Server 12.04. My IP is 192.168.4.160. I want to route the HTTP traffic generated locally from my system destined to a particular URL (say x.x.x.x) to pass through proxy server. My proxy server is 192.168.0.13:3128. I added following rule in iptables sudo iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d x.x.x.x --dport 80 -j DNAT --to 192.168.0.13:3128 However, this rule does not seem to work for me. I captured packet in wireshark and I saw that packet is still going to x.x.x.x I am not very much familiar with iptables, so please try to be specific. Thanks in advance

Working on a virtual machine as a developer

In the company I'm currently working in, they decided that each developer will move to a VM desktop (Citrix/WinServer2012) an develop/test from there with restricted/no rights to install new software. The Server we will be working on are in a remote Datacenter. So i.e. if for some reason or another the internet brake down, we can't work till the connection is up again. As a developer I don't want to use windows as OS for my working/development environment as there is no need because we don't develop OS specific software. What good points could I raise in an argumentation against moving to the VMs beside the loss/restriction of freedom and the loss of connection to the internet?

Fastest way to run a JSON server on my local machine

I am a front-end developer. For many experiemnets I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. For example I need to setup a server that saves, modifies and read data from a "library" database like this: POST /books create a book GET /book/:id gets a book and so on... What is the fastest and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy. Is there any framework (on any language) that do stuff like this for me?

Grub messed up on dual boot machine - can't boot live usb

I have a laptop on which I had Win 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 installed. The hdd has two partitions (one primary and one extended). Grub wasn't loaing initially so I ran the boot disk repair tool which seemed to sort it out. However, I mistakenly removed python (long story) from the Ubuntu OS and this obviously messed up Ubuntu a lot. So I decided to reintsall both Win7 and Ubuntu 12.04 in an attempt to get things back fresh. Win 7 went fine, but now when I try and use the Live USB to install Ubuntu I get: error: no such device: grub rescue I guess grub is still there despite the Win 7 reinstall and it can't find the partition for Ubuntu (which I deleted prior to the fresh install). I have tried fixmbr in windows console and the boot-repair-disk utility, but no joy. I cannot boot the live usb so no access to linux. A real mess. Any suggestions from the community?

i have a local GIT repository in my system by name 'git_repo' under which i had the whole codebase for a website(pre-configured by someone else), including all the jsps, js, css etc. I used the following commands to create the local git repository out of the main repository: git branch //to show the current branch git checkout -b branch_local_name origin/Main_branch_name //to create local repository in current branch git fetch //to fetch the current build Accidently, i deleted all the contents of the local folder and i don't know what to do fetch the contents of that website again. Please help !!!

Fixing a typo in machine name

When i installed windows i had a typo in the machine name that i corrected from the system's 'Computer Name/Domain Changes' - the workstation is a member of a workgroup not a domain. From everything i can see the renamed machine name is correct. Shift gears.... I'm importing SQL logins from my remote server to this, my development workstation and have used the script presented here - a script that generates a CREATE statement for each login found. While I was preparing to run this script's output (from the remote box) i needed to change the domain name from the remote to my local's name - so i ran the same script locally (in order to see what SQL things my domain name is. SQL has the original machine name - the one with the typo. However, the scripts are tossing errors if i try to create logins with that identifier. CREATE LOGIN [Setve\Admin] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] But works correctly if i use the updated machine name: CREATE LOGIN [Steve\Admin] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] So the problem is: do i have a problem i need to solve? Somewhere, deep in the guts of SQL Server, it has record of a Domain name that does not exist. Should i find and fix that discrepancy? thx

5 ways to stop code thrashing…

A few days ago I was programming on a personal project and hit a roadblock. I was applying the MVVM pattern and for some reason my view model was not updating the view when the state changed??? I had applied this pattern many times before and had never had this problem. It just didn’t make sense. So what did I do… I did what anyone would have done in my situation and looked to pass the blame to someone or something else. I tried to blame one of the inherited base classes, but it looked fine, then to Visual Studio, but it seemed to be fine and eventually to any random segment of code I came across. My elementary problem had now mushroomed into one that had lost any logical basis and I was in thrashing mode! So what to do when you begin to thrash? 1) Do a general code cleanup – Now there is a difference between cleaning code and changing code . When you thrash you change code and you want to avoid this. What you really want to do is things like rename variables to have better meaning and go over your comments. 2) Do a proof of concept – if cleaning code doesn’t help. The you want to isolate the problem and identify the key concepts. When you isolate code you ideally want it to be in a totally separate project with as little complexity as possible. Make the building blocks and try and replicate the functionality that you are getting in your current application. 3) Phone a friend – I have found speaking to someone else about the problem generally helps me solve any thrashing issues I am having. Usually they don’t even have to say anything to solve the problem, just you talking them through the problem helps you get clarity of mind. 4) Let the dust settle – Sometimes time is the best solution. I have had a few problems that no matter who I discussed them with and no matter how much code cleaning I had done I just couldn’t seem to fix it. My brain just seemed to be going in circles. A good nights rest has always helped and often just the break away from the problem has helped me find a solution. 5) Stack overflow it – So similar to phone a friend. I am really surprised to see what a melting pot stack overflow has been and what a help it has been in solving technology specific problems. Just be considerate to those using the site and explain clearly exactly what problem you are having and the technologies you are using or else you will probably not get any useful help…

VPN sharing on Mac OS X 10.5 machine

I have a rather weird problem. I want to share a VPN connection that has been established by my Mac OS X 10.5 computer with another machine in my network. This is what I did: In the /etc/hostcongig file on the main computer I added the line: IPFORWARDING=-YES- I assigned a fixed IP address to my computer (192.168.178.30), a fixed one to the other machine (192.168.178.60) and my computer's IP address as gateway on the other machine. I connected to my VPN using the internal Mac OS X VPN client (PPTP connection) I run this script: #!/bin/sh natd -same_ports -use_sockets -unregistered_only -dynamic -interface ppp0 -clamp_mss ipfw -f flush ipfw add divert natd ip from any to any via ppp0 ipfw add pass all from any to any sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1 Source: Using (and sharing) a VPN connection on your Mac Now everthing works smootly, however speed is an issue. I get 1,8 MBit/s on my main machine and only 0,3 - 0,6 MBit/s on the other one. My question: What could possibly be wrong? Do I have to tweak MTU settings, is there any packet inspection ongoing that needs time....? Any help appreciated!
