• Ubuntu 12.10 hangs on checking battery state

  I have a Thinkpad X230. After a boot it hangs with checking battery state [OK]. A second boot is most times successful. What I have seen in other posts doesn't fit to my problem, because My graphics card is Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics controller (not nvidia) It happens not always I have a fresh installed 12.10 with the latest updates (no upgrade) Does anyone experience the same issues or has a solution?

• After update, grub is broken.

  Some months back I used wubi to install ubuntu on an hp laptop with vista. After not using it for a month or so, I loaded ubuntu and installed many updates (including kernel update). Windows boot manager loads without any problems, and I can boot to vista without problems. However, if I choose ubuntu, the screen briefly flashes Try (hd0,0) : NTFS5 and then goes to black. I never get to the kernel image selection screen.

• Black screen on boot. FailsafeX: "Screen not found"

  I made a regular update using update center yesterday on My Samsung NP730U3E with Ubuntu gnome 13.10 and today it won't start. Or rather: it just gives me a black screen. On start up I get to enter my encryption password and everything seems fine. But after the encryption password is accepted it just blanks out. When I boot into recovery mode and try to boot failsafeX it returns "Fatal server error: (EE) no screens found (EE)" After booting into recovery mode and "Resume normal boot" I get to the tty1 prompt. If I head over to "tty7", where the graphical things usually are going on I just see this (and it's frozen): What to do?

• ACPI=OFF in Ubuntu 11.10

  When I tried to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 the system froze, so I've been playing around with a couple other linux builds (Fedora, Mint, and Puppy) the last couple days and I keep coming around to the same problem: a lockup during boot; each build referencing a kernel error. On another board someone suggested booting with a boot up line of "ACPI = off". It works with other OS', but I'm not sure where to put this command. Can anyone 'enlighten' me, please?

  Earlier today i installed ubuntu 12.10 beta. Grub wasn't booting, but just going directly to my primary OS Windows 7. I assumed i had partitioned incorrectly, because partitioning isnt my strong suit. I used boot repair because it was well recomanded off a live usb. Afterwards, grub appeared, but i only had options for Ubuntu, Advanced Ubuntu Option, and my hidden windows 7 recovery partition. Please help me recover my access to windows partiton. • Ubuntu 11.10 error message at startup after clean install

  I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 (did a fresh install and erased 11.04). After the reboot it appeared a log on the screen, saying all the starting services on the left and [OK] on the right. However, two particular entries, starting automatic crash report installation and starting restore sound card(s') mixer state(s) were set on [FAIL]. After that, Ubuntu did not boot. Is there any way that i can skip those two entries and boot Ubuntu?

• A Windows Update Prevented Live Discs From Working? [migrated]

  First off I'll state my system specs. Acer Aspire M1100 Windows Vista Home Basic 32bit OEM 2 Gigs of DDR2 ram 160Gig hard drive 2.7Ghz AMD Athlon 64 processor ATI Radeon X1250 Graphics card A few days ago my computer did automatic updates and updated windows defender to KB915597 (Definition 1.135.415.0), After which when shutting down and starting up I would receive BSOD with the information BUGCODE_USE_DRIVER and 0x000000FE (0x00000008, 0x00000006, 0x00000006, 0x877330000) upon where my computer would not start up with any USB devices plugged in and it always require me to run startup repair before it started. Upon when I first started it up and was able to fully boot windows, I had no use of the mouse so I was unable to install the fix that the windows solutions center brought up on my screen, so I restarted again and installed the fix hoping it would cease the problem, it did not. Upoon starting up after installing the fix and restarting I was confronted with the BSOD 0x000000FE (0x00000008, 0x00000006, 0x00000006, 0x83291000) at which I found the startup repair could not fix the problem and I restored, as I most like should have in the first place. After going through that I read that simply installing the latest defender version from the microsoft site had fixed this problem for others, so I did that, to find I still received the BSOD's. So in a attempt to find a fix to the problem I went to the microsoft answers site to try to find a way to fix the problem, there I was told to simply disable defender and reboot to see if that fixed the problem, upon doing this my computer would no longer even startup, when I boot normally I get to just when the loading screen finishes and then my computer restarts and when I run startup repair, it runs for about 15 seconds and then my computer restarts as well. I have tried running ubuntu live discs in order to simply access the drive and simply copy and paste the 2 month old physical backup I have of my C drive to the C drive, but whenever I run the live OS when it gets to the end of the load screen and is about to boot, the computer again restarts, yet if I put in a gparted disc, I am able to boot it fully, although it does not give me access to the file system just partition managing and when I attempt to access the internet through it, the computer once again restarts. So my question is, how could the update and what has happened prevent me from running the live OS's properly?

  I can't boot into windows 7 professional after installing ubuntu 11.10 alongside windows as a dual boot. Windows starts to boot but then it stops during start up and "crashes". I do not have an installation or repair disc and windows is not registered as I built the computer in a class. Please help anybody who is familiar with ubuntu. Optimally I would like to just uninstall ubuntu altogether as GRUB scares me a little and Ubuntu isn't as good as windows 7 and "Bleeped" stuff up. I tried google and nothing that great came up and also I can't find a phone # to contact ubuntu/linux. :-( Specs: OS: Windows 7 professional x64, Ubuntu unity 11.10; CPU: Intel Celeron 2.6 GHz; 2 GB of RAM; Built in september or october 2011. Desktop Homebuilt PC.

• Installed Ubuntu and lost access to Windows

  I installed it by using a load of unallocated space on a completely separate hard drive than the one Windows is installed to. When I choose Windows on the boot menu I get this: 'Invalid EFI path' Any idea why this is? EDIT: Here is information from boot info script. http://paste.ubuntu.com/1202156/ I think it might be because I have more than 4 partitions on the drive? Although I am not sure what the one labelled as 'unknown' is at all.

  I created a LiveUSB of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS using Pendrive Linux. -Created a separate 30GB partition using Windows 8 Disk Management -Disabled Secure Boot (Didn't find an option to disable EFI boot) -Disabled Fast Startup The laptop starts the GRUB menu shows up but it doesn't go beyond that no matter what option i choose. After choosing any option the screen goes blank but the power is still on i can see the power light.   Trying to install OpenVZ kernel on Centos 6.3, Yes my kernel is installed i can see it in the /boot folder, yes it is Rhel6 and yes it is all up to date, i checked this with yum update.   I recently installed a new copy of Ubuntu 9.10 (Kernel 2.6.31-14) on to my Hp Pavilion dv6t, so I can setup a Linux development environment. The install went flawlessly and I proceeded with Ubuntu's udate manager's long list of updates (292 in all). I also setup a swap file and activated a Nvidia 185 driver for the Nvidia 260m GPU on the machine. After all this was done I restarted the computer and booted into Ubuntu this time with a newer 2.6.31-19 Kernel which was installed from the update manager. At this point I can scrap the install if I broke something, but my intuition says this is an issue with the kernel recognizing the correct hardware configuration for my system, or perhaps this is an issue with the APIC drivers managing Nehalem's new power management capabilities? • Need help solving "Disk Error Press any key to restart" after blue screen in XP.

  I have had a couple of BSOD's lately and after the last one I got the disk error message. The disk shows up during the BIOS portion of the boot. It is in a Dell Precision 690 so the F12 key gives me a boot menu. I can boot from the utility partition, and if I specifically select the hard drive from the boot menu it will boot fine. Any ideas why if I just try to do an unattended boot, it give the error listed in the title?

  I would like to change an entry for a solution to boot from CD from legacy grub (looks like title bla bla bla) to an entry to a format compatible to grub 2 (the one that looks like menuentry "bla bla bla" {. • Blank screen after grub menu

  I just rebooted an Ubuntu Server 10.04. After choosing boot options in the grub menu, though, it just displays a black screen with the blinking white underscore in the upper-left corner. The machine has had (hardware) trouble with networking before, but the problem remains after 10 minutes, so I don't think it's the problem now. Booting into recovery mode or using earlier kernels yields the same problem. This also happens if I boot from another hard-drive. I haven't yet tried to boot from CD as the machine lacks a CD reader. How should I diagnose the problem? Update: My boot options are: recordfail insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 567[redacted] linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-29-generic root=UUID=567[redacted] ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-29-generic Update: Also, I cannot access the virtual terminals (ctrl+alt+Fn).

• Booting Windows off new SSD from grub boots old Windows instead

  After a new SSD install, I have: Original Windows 7 on sdc1 (to be retired) Copy of Windows 7 on sdb2 A Windows system partition on sdb1 Ubuntu 12.04 on sda, /boot and ergo grub is on sda1 Grub is MBR on sda and set to boot from BIOS. I prefer to not change this; grub is great! I've run update-grub (the Ubuntu grub scripts are, at present, unaltered) and grub seems to be correctly configured as all options are available: I can boot any of the 3 Windows partitions and Ubuntu. I also ran the repair tool to get Windows to add both installations to BCD. The problem: choosing particular options seem to have no effect; the old version of Windows on sdc1 always boots. I'm stumped! My thought was to only boot Windows off sdb1, and then let BCD do the rest (present a menu to boot between sdb2 and sdc1, but I can't seem to get BCD to boot sdb2), but this has been unsuccessful. • EMERGENCY - Major Problems After Perl Module Installed via WHM

  I attempted to install the perl module Net::Twitter::Role::API::Lists using WHM and after doing so my whole site came down. It seems that something that was updated with the install isn't functioning correctly and since our website it written in Perl none of our site scripts will run. In almost 8 years of working with Perl I've never had any issues arise after installing a perl module so I have no idea how to even start troubleshooting. The error I see when trying to compile any of our Perl scripts is below. I'd appreciate any advice on what might be wrong and steps on how I can go about resolve it. Thanks in advance for your help! • Challenges in multi-player Android Game Server with RESTful Nature

  I'm working on an Android Game based on Contract Bridge, as a part of my college Summer Internship project. The game will be multi-player such that 4 Android devices can play it, so there's no BOT or CPU player to be developed. At the time of getting project, I realized that most of the students had already worked on the project but none of their works is reusable now (for variety of reasons like, undocumented code and design architecture, different platform implementation). I have experience working on several open source projects and hence I emphasis to work out on this project such that components I make become reusable as much as possible. Now, as the game is multi-player and entire game progress will be handled on server, I'm currently working on Server's design, since I wanted to make game server reusable such that any client platform can use it, I was previously confused in selecting Socket or REST for Game Server's design, but later finalized to work on REST APIs for the server. Now, since I have to keep all players in-sync while they make movements in game, on server I've planned to use Database which will keep all players' progress, specific for each table (in Bridge, 4 players play on single table, and server will handle many such game tables). I don't know if its an appropriate decision to use database as shared medium to track progress of each game table (let me know if there's an appropriate or better option). Obviously, when game is completed for the table, data for that table on server's database is discarded. Now the problem is that, access to REST service is an HTTP call, so as long as client doesn't make any request, server will remain idle, and consider a situation where A player has played a card on his device and the device requests to apply this change on the server. Now, I need to let rest of the three devices know that the player has played a card, and also update view on their device. AFAIK, REST cannot provide a sort-of Push-notification system, since the connection to the server is not persistent. One solution that I thought was to make each device constantly poll the server for any change (like every 56 ms) and when changes are found, reflect it on the device. But I feel this is not an elegant way, as every HTTP request is expensive. (and I choose REST to make game play experience robust since, a mobile device tends to get disconnected from Internet, and if there's Socket-like persistent connection then entire game progress is subject to lost. Also, portability on client-end is important) Also, imagining a situation where 10 game tables are in progress and 40 players are playing, a server must be capable to handle flooded HTTP requests from all the devices which make it every 56 ms. So I wonder if the situation is assumed as DoS attack. So, explaining the situation, am I going on the right track for the server design? I wanted to be sure before I proceed much further with the code.

• Multi-Threaded Application vs. Single Threaded Application

  Why would we use a multi threaded application vs. a single threaded application? First we must define multithreading. Multithreading is a feature of an operating system that allows programs to run subcomponents or threads in parallel. Typically most applications only need to use one thread because they do not perform time consuming tasks. The use of multiple threads allows an application to distribute long running tasks so that they can be executed in parallel. This gives the user the perceived appearance that the application is working faster due to the fact that while one thread is waiting on an IO process the remaining tasks can make use of the available CPU. The allows working threads to execute in tandem so that they can be competed sooner. Multithreading Benefits Improved responsiveness — Users usually report improved responsiveness compared to single thread applications. Faster applications — Multiple threads can lead to improved application performance. Prioritization — Threads can be assigned a priority which would allow higher priority tasks to take precedence over lower priority tasks. Single Threading Benefits Programming and debugging —These activities are easier compared to multithreaded applications due to the reduced complexity Less Overhead — Threads add overhead to an application When developing multi-threaded applications, the following must be considered. Deadlocks occur when two threads hold a monitor that the other one requires. In essence each task is blocking the other and both tasks are waiting for the other monitor to be released. This forces an application to hang or deadlock. Resource allocation is used to prevent deadlocks because the system determines if approving the resource request will render the system in an unsafe state. An unsafe state could result in a deadlock. The system only approves requests that will lead to safe states. Thread Synchronization is used when multiple threads use the same instance of an object. The threads accessing the object can then be locked and then synchronized so that each task can interact with the static object on at a time.
