  • Should Site Title be Before or After Page Title?

    - by NickAldwin
Possible Duplicate: Does the order of keywords matter in a page title? Apologies if this is a dupe. I tried searching, but didn't find anything specifically addressing this concern. When creating a large(ish) site, page titles usually reference both the site name and the current page name. However, it seems there are two main conventions: Bob's Awesome Site - Contact Page and Contact Page - Bob's Awesome Site I've looked around, and pages usually use one of the two variants above. Is there any reason to use one over the other? SEO/readability/usability/etc? I've thought about it, and have only come up with: Page first - Differentiates the tab when the browser is crowded with lots of tabs Site first - Immediately see the "parent" site, so to speak; more cohesive experience

  • What measures can be taken to increase Google indexing speed for a given newly created page?

    - by knorv
Consider a website with a large number of pages. New pages are published regularly. When publishing a new page the website operator wants to get the newly created paged indexed in Google as soon as possible. The website operator wants to minimize the time spent between publication and indexing. Consider the site http://www.example.com/ with hundreds of thousands of pages. The page page http://www.example.com/something/important-page.html is created at say 12:00. How do I get important-page.html indexed as soon as possible after 12:00? Ideally within seconds or minutes. Or more generally: What options are available to try to get Google to index a specific newly created page as soon as possible?

  • What percent of visitors should click on the next page before you enable prefetching?

    - by Kevin Burke
Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome support prefetching via an HTML tag: <!-- in chrome --> <link rel="prerender" href="http://example.org/index.html"> I suppose it is always worthwhile to include this tag if 100% of users on a page click on the "Next Page" button or similar, and never worthwhile to include it if only 2% or 3% of users visit the following page. At what percent of clicks should you turn on prefetching of the next page? 65%? Also, does the calculus change if the current page is HTTP and the next page is HTTPS?

  • How can I toggle Full Screen mode in Remote Desktop without a Break key?

    - by Jay Bazuzi
My small laptop has a small keyboard, which lacks a Pause/Break key. Ctrl-Alt-Break toggles Full Screen mode in Windows Remote Desktop. Without a Break key, how can I enter Full Screen mode? I know I can exit fullscreen mode with the mouse. Maximizing the window doesn't help. This matters more on small laptops because the screens are small (so you need all the real estate you can get) and because the keyboard lacks dedicated PgUp/PgDn and other dedicated keys (so I can't easily use the RDP alternatives like Alt-PgUp).

  • htaccess 301 redirect help needed

    - by John
Due to some issues in my site many pages are visible as duplicate using : www.example.com/page.html?task=view but it's content is exactly same as www.example.com/page.html. One way is to use http 301 redirect from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html when anybody fetches page with arguments. But links like www.example.com/page.html?task=view will remain visible to outside world. Another way is canonicalization which I don't want to use as it is difficult to insert the tag in Joomla CMS. I want to hide www.example.com/page.html?task=view from external world. Is it possible to change the url from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html ? I mean if there is href link of www.example.com/page.html?task=view in my web page, it should be visible to external world as without any arguments. This is different from using 301 to convert externally accessed page : www.example.com/page.html?task=view to without using arguments in .htaccess.

  • Can we 301 redirect to a new page, but still publish the old content somewhere else?

    - by KBS
We have a page on the site which ranks well for an SEO term (top 5) but contains old information. We have added a new page but Google doesn't rank it that well. Information on these pages is time sensitive. Old: example.com/2013-related-information.html New: example.com/2014-related-information.html Obvious solution is to delete old page and do a 301 redirect to the new page. Now, can we still keep the old page by giving it a new URL. example.com/2013-related-information.html is redirected to example.com/2014-related-information.html example.com/2014-related-information.html is recreated with a new address such as example.com/new-2013-related-information.html What we are trying to do is to send the user to the fresh page but still not destroying the record copy if someone wants to go and dig up the old information.

  • Get Image Source URLs from a Different Page Using JS

    - by SDD
    Everyone: I'm trying to grab the source URLs of images from one page and use them in some JavaScript in another page. I know how to pull in images using JQuery .load(). However, rather than load all the images and display them on the page, I want to just grab the source URLs so I can use them in a JS array. Page 1 is just a page with images: <html> <head> </head> <body> <img id="image0" src="image0.jpg" /> <img id="image1" src="image1.jpg" /> <img id="image2" src="image2.jpg" /> <img id="image3" src="image3.jpg" /> </body> </html> Page 2 contains my JS. (Please note that the end goal is to load images into an array, randomize them, and using cookies, show a new image on page load every 10 seconds. All this is working. However, rather than hard code the image paths into my javascript as shown below, I'd prefer to take the paths from Page 1 based on their IDs. This way, the images won't always need to be titled "image1.jpg," etc.) <script type = "text/javascript"> var days = 730; var rotator = new Object(); var currentTime = new Date(); var currentMilli = currentTime.getTime(); var images = [], index = 0; images[0] = "image0.jpg"; images[1] = "image1.jpg"; images[2] = "image2.jpg"; images[3] = "image3.jpg"; rotator.getCookie = function(Name) { var re = new RegExp(Name+"=[^;]+", "i"); if (document.cookie.match(re)) return document.cookie.match(re)[0].split("=")[1]; return''; } rotator.setCookie = function(name, value, days) { var expireDate = new Date(); var expstring = expireDate.setDate(expireDate.getDate()+parseInt(days)); document.cookie = name+"="+value+"; expires="+expireDate.toGMTString()+"; path=/"; } rotator.randomize = function() { index = Math.floor(Math.random() * images.length); randomImageSrc = images[index]; } rotator.check = function() { if (rotator.getCookie("randomImage") == "") { rotator.randomize(); document.write("<img src=" + randomImageSrc + ">"); rotator.setCookie("randomImage", randomImageSrc, days); rotator.setCookie("timeClock", currentMilli, days); } else { var writtenTime = parseInt(rotator.getCookie("timeClock"),10); if ( currentMilli > writtenTime + 10000 ) { rotator.randomize(); var writtenImage = rotator.getCookie("randomImage") while ( randomImageSrc == writtenImage ) { rotator.randomize(); } document.write("<img src=" + randomImageSrc + ">"); rotator.setCookie("randomImage", randomImageSrc, days); rotator.setCookie("timeClock", currentMilli, days); } else { var writtenImage = rotator.getCookie("randomImage") document.write("<img src=" + writtenImage + ">"); } } } rotator.check() </script> Can anyone point me in the right direction? My hunch is to use JQuery .get(), but I've been unsuccessful so far. Please let me know if I can clarify!

  • 500 internal server error on certain page after a few hours

    - by Brian Leach
I am getting a 500 Internal Server Error on a certain page of my site after a few hours of being up. I restart uWSGI instance with uwsgi --ini /home/metheuser/webapps/ers_portal/ers_portal_uwsgi.ini and it works again for a few hours. The rest of the site seems to be working. When I navigate to my_table, I am directed to the login page. But, I get the 500 error on my table page on login. I followed the instructions here to set up my nginx and uwsgi configs. That is, I have ers_portal_nginx.conf located i my app folder that is symlinked to /etc/nginx/conf.d/. I start my uWSGI "instance" (not sure what exactly to call it) in a Screen instance as mentioned above, with the .ini file located in my app folder My ers_portal_nginx.conf: server { listen 80; server_name www.mydomain.com; location / { try_files $uri @app; } location @app { include uwsgi_params; uwsgi_pass unix:/home/metheuser/webapps/ers_portal/run_web_uwsgi.sock; } } My ers_portal_uwsgi.ini: [uwsgi] #user info uid = metheuser gid = ers_group #application's base folder base = /home/metheuser/webapps/ers_portal #python module to import app = run_web module = %(app) home = %(base)/ers_portal_venv pythonpath = %(base) #socket file's location socket = /home/metheuser/webapps/ers_portal/%n.sock #permissions for the socket file chmod-socket = 666 #uwsgi varible only, does not relate to your flask application callable = app #location of log files logto = /home/metheuser/webapps/ers_portal/logs/%n.log Relevant parts of my views.py data_modification_time = None data = None def reload_data(): global data_modification_time, data, sites, column_names filename = '/home/metheuser/webapps/ers_portal/app/static/' + ec.dd_filename mtime = os.stat(filename).st_mtime if data_modification_time != mtime: data_modification_time = mtime with open(filename) as f: data = pickle.load(f) return data @a bunch of authentication stuff... @app.route('/') @app.route('/index') def index(): return render_template("index.html", title = 'Main',) @app.route('/login', methods = ['GET', 'POST']) def login(): login stuff... @app.route('/my_table') @login_required def my_table(): print 'trying to access data table...' data = reload_data() return render_template("my_table.html", title = "Rundata Viewer", sts = sites, cn = column_names, data = data) # dictionary of data I installed nginx via yum as described here (yesterday) I am using uWSGI installed in my venv via pip I am on CentOS 6 My uwsgi log shows: Wed Jun 11 17:20:01 2014 - uwsgi_response_writev_headers_and_body_do(): Broken pipe [core/writer.c line 287] during GET /whm-server-status (127.0.0.1) IOError: write error [pid: 9586|app: 0|req: 135/135] 127.0.0.1 () {24 vars in 292 bytes} [Wed Jun 11 17:20:01 2014] GET /whm-server-status => generated 0 bytes in 3 msecs (HTTP/1.0 404) 2 headers in 0 bytes (0 switches on core 0) When its working, the print statement in the views "my_table" route prints into the log file. • Adding my podcast to my Facebook fan page

    - by Donald Burr
I've set up a Facebook fan page for my podcast, Otaku no Podcast. I'd love to add a Flash based player to the fan page that can play the latest episode of my podcast. Or, at the very least, a link to the latest episode on my website (which has its own Flash-based audio player). My podcast's website of course exports a valid RSS feed. I've tried several different podcast player/RSS feed display applications including Podcast Pickle (which has a facebook app), but none of them appear to work and/or are maintained any more. Podcast Pickle used to work for me a long time ago, but is no longer working for me. Any ideas?

  • Error "403 Forbidden" on Sharepoint Search Settings Page

    - by user21924
Hello I thought I had solved this nightmare by re-entering the values in my SSP properties set up, however accessing the Search Settings page error has reared it ugly head again. Now all solutions point to this method listed here * http://www.routtlogics.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=6 * http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/f00651cd-e452-45b9-b19e-90e89c3c3ad4 * http://blogs.technet.com/sushrao/archive/2009/03/26/microsoft-office-sharepoint-server-2007-moss-403-forbidden-error-when-clicked-on-search-settings-page.aspx The above workaround(s) basically states that granting the local group WSS_WPG read and write permission to the Task folder in the Windows directory would solve the problem, however whenever I try to change to the permission attribute of this folder I get an access denied message, even when logged in as a Domain administrator, Enterprise and even the SharePoint Farm administrator. Please guys how do I get around this access denied issue. Thanks

  • Centos Virtual host loading default page

    - by ntechi
I have asked a question which was related to this but not same, I have a centos VPS, which has two wordpress websites, one is mbas.co.in and another is onlinemba123.com, now for virtual hosting using just ONE IP ADDRESS, first I started mbas.co.in, which is working fine, when I added onlinemba123.com then, it is loading default Centos page instead of my website, and I am just testing my onlinemba123 website, I haven't configured DNS for it, I am testing it through editing my PC's hosts file, My website folder names are also same as in the conf file below Now my question is how can I load my website instead of Default page, is my virtual host config fine? My virtual host config: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /var/www/html/www.mbas.co.in ServerName mbas.co.in ErrorLog logs/mbas.co.in-error_log CustomLog logs/mbas.co.in-access_log common </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /var/www/html/www.onlinemba123.com ServerName www.onlinemba123.com ErrorLog logs/onlinemba123-error_log CustomLog logs/onlinemba123-access_log common </VirtualHost> My computers host file is: xx.xxx.xxx.xxx www.onlinemba123.com

  • Gmail page works but won't stop loading

    - by MLW
When I open the GMail page in Chrome (9.0.597.102) on OS X (10.6.4), the page works fine and is functional, but it often remains in a "Loading" state, with the loading icon active, for extremely long periods of time. Functionally, there is no problem, since everything is accessible, and the problem is intermittent. Sometimes it immediately completes loading, other times it will claim to be "loading" for hours. My date is correct (as set with time.*.apple.com), and I don't have any Google Labs enabled. Does anyone else have this problem, or know the cause and solution?

  • Where is Amazon Linux AMI Test Page EC2?

    - by fuzzybee
I have set up my websites as directories directly under /var/www/html/ and they are working just fine (the websites are mapped to virtual hosts). So, this is mainly out of curiosity for the moment. Furthermore, being able to customise this might bring some benefits in the future e.g. branding the elastic IPs my computer use temporarily. Notes I can always create a index.html page under /var/www/html/ and modify it but that's not my goal here. I can also map the elastic IP address to a directory /var/www/html/default/ and do my stuffs there but that is not also my goal here My goal is the find the Amazon Linux AMI test page I've tried running Linux command to find it but it takes too long obviously

I installed the last stable version of Firefox (3.5.5) on a computer but when I launch the browser the page stay empty (blank). In the settings I set the startpage as Google but nothing to do. When the browser starts in the address bar it is well written google.com but the page remains blank. I must click on the button in the address bar so that the site appears. I've never had this problem with Firefox, it's strange. Thanks

    - by sysdmxm
I am using IIS7 on Windows Server 2008r2. I have recently installed php and IIS. I am trying to browse to the index.php but it returns a blank page. It loads the favicon and the header of my page. When I load an info.php file it is not blank. If I disable Anonymus Authentication it the same index.php returns IIS 7.5 Detailed Error - 401.2 - Unauthorized. What is strange is I installed this exact code onto another fresh IIS install I just did and it loads fine. Permissions for the directory are the same for both.

  • Nginx error page with JSON response

    I'm trying to serve a maintenance page to clients making request to my application when it is under maintenance. Following is my nginx configuration for that purpose. server { recursive_error_pages on; listen 80; ... if (-f $document_root/maintenance.html) { return 503; } error_page 404 /404.html; error_page 500 502 504 /500.html; error_page 503 @503; location = /404.html { root $document_root; } location = /500.html { root $document_root; } location @503 { error_page 405 =/maintenance.html; if (-f $request_filename) { break; } rewrite ^(.*)$ /maintenance.html break; } } Lets say I have enabled maintenance of my site by creating a $document_root/maintenance.html. Following is the response that I get when setting Accept to application/json. $ curl http://server.com/ -i -v -X GET -H "Accept: application/json" * Adding handle: conn: 0x190c430 * Adding handle: send: 0 * Adding handle: recv: 0 * Curl_addHandleToPipeline: length: 1 * - Conn 0 (0x190c430) send_pipe: 1, recv_pipe: 0 * About to connect() to server.com port 80 (#0) * Trying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx... * Connected to server.com (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) port 80 (#0) > GET / HTTP/1.1 > User-Agent: curl/7.33.0 > Host: server.com > Accept: application/json > < HTTP/1.1 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable HTTP/1.1 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable * Server nginx/1.1.19 is not blacklisted < Server: nginx/1.1.19 Server: nginx/1.1.19 < Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2013 11:15:50 GMT Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2013 11:15:50 GMT < Content-Type: text/html Content-Type: text/html < Content-Length: 27 Content-Length: 27 < Connection: keep-alive Connection: keep-alive < This is under maintenance. * Connection #0 to host server.com left intact

  • Should you disable page file with SSD?

    - by Pyrolistical
I've been reading this question, and it has a lot of great information. But assuming you have more than enough ram, I think page file should be disabled on SSD to extend the life time. I know you would lose the core dump on crash, but not many people need that information. From my understand without a page file as you reach the limit of your ram that might trigger thrashing on disk. But for SSDs there is no concept of thrashing, reads are fast. What do you guys think?

  • Strategies for very fast delivery of webpages.

    - by Cherian
I run a website Cucumbertown with an initial pay load of nearly 9KB zipped. All my js is delayed loaded with requirejs and modernizer is the only exception. Now all my webpages are Nginx cached and only 10-15% hits go to the backend proxy. And the cache is invalidated by logged in users as proxy_cache_bypass. So for an anonymous user its nearly always a cache hit. I have some basic OS tuning with default via ip dev eth0 initcwnd 15 net.ipv4.tcp_slow_start_after_idle 0 Despite an all cache & large initcwnd my pages still take 2.5 – 3 seconds. I have a yslow score of And page speed at Are there strategies that can help deliver webpages even faster than this? Deliver pages at 1+ second time for 10KB payload? Notes: My servers run of a fairly good data center from Linode at Fremont.
