  • What is the best backup solution for VMware Infrastructure system that hosts a wide variety of VMs?

    - by SBWorks
In a situation where you are running: VMware Infrastructure 4.x with multiple hosts Over 150 VMs with a wide variety of operating systems (Linux in a half dozen distros, Solaris, every MS version, etc.) in multiple languages with almost every mix of installed software (luckily, no Exchange mail servers) Using an EMC fiber channel SAN The VWs that need need to be backed up use about 2 terabytes of data (total) The goal is to keep backups for about 3-months At this rough scale, what backup solutions have worked well for you? And, as an add-on question, did any of them have de-duplication that you thought was effective and useful?

  • Which OS/distributions have 64-bit kernel and 32-bit userspace? [closed]

    - by osgx
Which OS (or distributions) comes with 64-bit kernels (x86_64, SPARC64, PPC64, ..smth else?..) and 32-bit userland? I want all small userspace programs (like ls, cat, etc) to be 32-bit, because they really no needs to be 64-bit. But OS kernel must be 64bit for using =3 Gb of RAM. Also database programs (when using a lot of memory) can be 64bit. 64bit mode can hurt some programs, makes them bigger, eating (wasting) memory on pointers (especially in big abstract datatypes like list, tree, etc). 64 bit programss WASTES twice memory on EACH Pointer. I don't want it. And the Question is not "Are the 32-bit programs needed when 64-bit porcessor is available". Question is "What OS comes with 32 bit userspace and kernels in 32/64 bit mode". Examples of such OS includes: Solaris/SPARC64, MACOSX/X86_64 (10.5)/....

  • Degraded RAID5 and no md superblock on one of remaining drive

    - by ark1214
This is actually on a QNAP TS-509 NAS. The RAID is basically a Linux RAID. The NAS was configured with RAID 5 with 5 drives (/md0 with /dev/sd[abcde]3). At some point, /dev/sde failed and drive was replaced. While rebuilding (and not completed), the NAS rebooted itself and /dev/sdc dropped out of the array. Now the array can't start because essentially 2 drives have dropped out. I disconnected /dev/sde and hoped that /md0 can resume in degraded mode, but no luck.. Further investigation shows that /dev/sdc3 has no md superblock. The data should be good since the array was unable to assemble after /dev/sdc dropped off. All the searches I done showed how to reassemble the array assuming 1 bad drive. But I think I just need to restore the superblock on /dev/sdc3 and that should bring the array up to a degraded mode which will allow me to backup data and then proceed with rebuilding with adding /dev/sde. Any help would be greatly appreciated. mdstat does not show /dev/md0 # cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [linear] [raid0] [raid1] [raid10] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [multipath] md5 : active raid1 sdd2[2](S) sdc2[3](S) sdb2[1] sda2[0] 530048 blocks [2/2] [UU] md13 : active raid1 sdd4[3] sdc4[2] sdb4[1] sda4[0] 458880 blocks [5/4] [UUUU_] bitmap: 40/57 pages [160KB], 4KB chunk md9 : active raid1 sdd1[3] sdc1[2] sdb1[1] sda1[0] 530048 blocks [5/4] [UUUU_] bitmap: 33/65 pages [132KB], 4KB chunk mdadm show /dev/md0 is still there # mdadm --examine --scan ARRAY /dev/md9 level=raid1 num-devices=5 UUID=271bf0f7:faf1f2c2:967631a4:3c0fa888 ARRAY /dev/md5 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=0d75de26:0759d153:5524b8ea:86a3ee0d spares=2 ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=5 UUID=ce3e369b:4ff9ddd2:3639798a:e3889841 ARRAY /dev/md13 level=raid1 num-devices=5 UUID=7384c159:ea48a152:a1cdc8f2:c8d79a9c With /dev/sde removed, here is the mdadm examine output showing sdc3 has no md superblock # mdadm --examine /dev/sda3 /dev/sda3: Magic : a92b4efc Version : 00.90.00 UUID : ce3e369b:4ff9ddd2:3639798a:e3889841 Creation Time : Sat Dec 8 15:01:19 2012 Raid Level : raid5 Used Dev Size : 1463569600 (1395.77 GiB 1498.70 GB) Array Size : 5854278400 (5583.08 GiB 5994.78 GB) Raid Devices : 5 Total Devices : 4 Preferred Minor : 0 Update Time : Sat Dec 8 15:06:17 2012 State : active Active Devices : 4 Working Devices : 4 Failed Devices : 1 Spare Devices : 0 Checksum : d9e9ff0e - correct Events : 0.394 Layout : left-symmetric Chunk Size : 64K Number Major Minor RaidDevice State this 0 8 3 0 active sync /dev/sda3 0 0 8 3 0 active sync /dev/sda3 1 1 8 19 1 active sync /dev/sdb3 2 2 8 35 2 active sync /dev/sdc3 3 3 8 51 3 active sync /dev/sdd3 4 4 0 0 4 faulty removed [~] # mdadm --examine /dev/sdb3 /dev/sdb3: Magic : a92b4efc Version : 00.90.00 UUID : ce3e369b:4ff9ddd2:3639798a:e3889841 Creation Time : Sat Dec 8 15:01:19 2012 Raid Level : raid5 Used Dev Size : 1463569600 (1395.77 GiB 1498.70 GB) Array Size : 5854278400 (5583.08 GiB 5994.78 GB) Raid Devices : 5 Total Devices : 4 Preferred Minor : 0 Update Time : Sat Dec 8 15:06:17 2012 State : active Active Devices : 4 Working Devices : 4 Failed Devices : 1 Spare Devices : 0 Checksum : d9e9ff20 - correct Events : 0.394 Layout : left-symmetric Chunk Size : 64K Number Major Minor RaidDevice State this 1 8 19 1 active sync /dev/sdb3 0 0 8 3 0 active sync /dev/sda3 1 1 8 19 1 active sync /dev/sdb3 2 2 8 35 2 active sync /dev/sdc3 3 3 8 51 3 active sync /dev/sdd3 4 4 0 0 4 faulty removed [~] # mdadm --examine /dev/sdc3 mdadm: No md superblock detected on /dev/sdc3. I am trying to set up my own DNS server solaris 10, i used the setup guide from http://www.logiqwest.com/dataCenter/Demos/RunBooks/DNS/DNSsetup.html I tried to join windows xp clients to the domain i configured using the above guide but i was unable to join giving me these errors, An error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate adomain controller for domain MYDOMAIN.COM. The error was: "No records found for given DNS query." (error code 0x0000251D DNS_INFO_NO_RECORDS) The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.MYDOMAIN.COM Where could i be going wrong? • Where is the central ZFS website now?

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
Oracle dumped OpenSolaris in Fall 2010, and it is unclear if Oracle will continue to publicly release updates to ZFS, except maybe after they release their next major version of Solaris. FreeBSD now has ZFS v28 available for testing. But where did v28 come from? I notice that the main ZFS website does not show version 28 available. Has this website been abandoned? If so, where is the central website for the ZFS project, so that I can browse the repo, read the mailing lists, read the release notes, etc. (I realize that OpenSolaris has been dumped by Oracle, and that they are limiting their ZFS releases to the community).

  • XEN disk mapping problem under opensolaris

    - by Louis
I have a system with two harddisks, i wanted to use the simplicity of ZFS for my file server and i also need to run a linux. I choosed XEN virtualization for that, supported on both system. My GRUB is well configured and i can boot both system. I would like is to run both system with solaris as a dom0 and the debian installed on the 2nd HD as a virtual machine. My problem is that i want to use the partitions of my 1st harddisk (sda1 under linux) and it does not work. I didn't find my use case on the web- Here is my Opensolaris device name of this partition : /dev/rdsk/c7d0p1 But when i use : disk = [ 'phy:rdsk/c7d0p1,sda1,w' ] as a disk mapping in my XEN configuration file i have the error : Error: Device 2049 (vbd) could not be connected. error: "rdsk/c7d0p1" is not a valid block device. I am "lost".

  • In *nix, how to determine which filesystem a particular file is on?

    - by smokris
In a generic, modern unix environment (say, GNU/Linux, GNU/Solaris, or Mac OS X), is there a good way to determine which mountpoint and filesystem-type a particular absolute file path is on? I suppose I could execute the mount command and manually parse the output of that and string-compare it with my file path, but before I do that I'm wondering if there's a more elegant way. I'm developing a BASH script that makes use of extended attributes, and want to make it Do The Right Thing (to the small extent that it is possible) for a variety of filesystems and host environments.

  • SSH and Active Directory authentication

    - by disserman
Is it possible to set up Linux (and Solaris) SSH server to authenticate users in this way: i.e. user john is a member of the group Project1_Developers in the Active Directory. we have something on the server A (running Linux, the server has an access to the AD via i.e. LDAP) in the SSH server LDAP (or other module) authentication config like root=Project1_Developers,Company_NIX_Admins. when john connects to the server A using his username "john" and domain password, the server checks the john's group in the domain and if the group is "Project1_Developers" or "Company_NIX_Admins", makes him locally as a root with a root privileges. The idea is also to have only a "root" and a system users on the server, without adding user "john" to all servers where John can log in. Any help or the idea how to make the above or something similar to the above? Preferred using AD but any other similar solution is also possible. p.s. please don't open a discussions is it secure to login via ssh as root or not, thanks :)

  • Preferred OS for hosting Tomcat servlet container

    - by dacracot
I know that I'm taking a risk, pitting the differing OS religions against each other, but I would like professional opinions about hosting a servlet container. In my case the container is set, we will be using Tomcat. But what is in question is the hosting operating system. We have administrators experienced in Windows Server 2003. We have developers experienced in Solaris, OSX, and Linux. There is no warring between these groups, just a question of who will ramp up through the learning curve necessary to use the OS that they are unfamiliar with. So given all the cooperative spirit, we are struggling with how to find the most efficient path. I had already cross-posted this question here.

No error messages given. Close widget, open again. Now hangs for a minute and then closes try edit /etc/inet/ipnodes, reboot eth card not up. Network widget hangs then closes Works perfectly on DHCP

  • nfs server on cygwin slow

    - by Weltenwanderer
The setup: We run an instance of cygwin nfsd on a Windows 2008 Server (Xeon 3,2 GHz). There are several Sun Solaris and SunOS machines accessing the shares. This is the exports file: /disk3 (rw,all_squash) /disk2 (rw,all_squash) Those paths are soft linked to the relevant cygdrive/d/path/to/dir paths. Some of the folders contain up to 10k files. The Problem: ls -la on the mounted folder on the sun boxes takes 2 - 3 minutes and the general read performance is really bad. cat filename displays the file in slow bursts and this hurts performance on tasks that access those shared files heavily. Processor load is not the issue, the nfs server idles most of the time, the cygwin tasks never get over 1% load.

  • How to configure sudoers with path wildcards?

    - by C. Lee
I need sudo for a command for any path under a particular area. Example: sudo mycommand /opt/apps/myapp/... What is the sudoers syntax to allow this command to run in any path that falls under /opt/apps/myapp? This is Solaris 10 sudo. Thank you for your reply, but I don't need wildcards for the path to the commands, but wildcards for the arguments for the commands. For example, we want to do something like... sudo mycmd /opt/userarea/area1 sudo mycmd /opt/userarea/area1/area2 sudo mycmd /opt/userarea/area1/area2/area3 So far, using wildcards for the arguments in sudoers look like this: /opt/userarea/* /opt/userarea/*/* And it seems like if we want to have N levels of directories, then we need N lines in sudoers! Is there a better way to include all N levels in one line in sudoers? Thanks.

  • Apache: Use Specific Applicaion for CGI scripts

    - by RandomInsano
I have two servers, one in production and one for development. The production server is Solaris, dev is FreeBSD. Because of this, python is installed in different directories. I'm using Python right now for making CGI scripts, and needing to remember to swap my hashbangs when I copy from dev to production is a little annoying (Same issue for SVN updates depending on which server I'm comitting from). Is there a way to configure apache so that I no longer need to hashbangs? Like, if it would lauch python and supply the CGI script for it? Might be a bit of a stretch, but no harm in asking

  • Does ILOM on recent Sun rackmount servers fully support Linux?

    - by orange80
Do the recent Sun rackmount servers with ILOM fully support installation of Linux (Ubuntu or Fedora maybe) via the ILOM (connected by ssh) without having to hook up a display, kbd, and mouse? I have an old Sun v20z right now that will install Solaris no problem over the Service Processor but when trying to install Ubuntu 9 64-bit server I get one line on the console then it goes blank. I'd be interested in know which if any of the recent x64 models would allow me to install and run linux while completely avoiding any need for external display, keyboard, or mouse. Thanks!

  • Environment variables in Weblogic Managed Server with SSL nodemanager

    - by Eric Darchis
We have a C legacy application start with JNI that requires environment variables. Not java -Djava.library.path -Dvar=foo as these are purely java. I need real environment variables. When we setup our domains, we usually use the SSH method to start the node managers. This works fine and the env variables are set properly. Recently the sysadmin has decided for a few reasons to use the SSL mode for nodemanagers. The servers start but the environment variables are not set. I checked with "pargs -e" (this is a Solaris machine) that the env variable was indeed not present from the nodemanager and for the managed server. Is SSL starting the managed server without running the .sh scripts or I am missing a parameter somewhere ?

  • telnet - is there a maximum line limit?

    - by benc
I am working on several servers that use HTTP for transport of commands. What I have encountered is that some of the commands I am trying to issue by hand are very long GETs, several lines, and that when I telnet from my Mac to my Solaris system, I cannot seem to cut and paste the line successfully. I get a couple bounching sounds (which I assume is a control-g - bell) and then it never pastes everything. From trying to break it up into smaller pieces, I am getting the impression that TELNET, or my bundled telnet client or server has a maximum line length that I had never bumped into. I did some googling and superusering, but did not find anything definitive.

  • Converting NTFS to ZFS (or other)

    - by NumberFour
Are there any benefits of converting HDDs that are running NTFS on a Linux machine to ZFS? Is there a way to do such conversion in Linux without losing the data? What about the stability of ZFS on Linux, does FUSE really work well in this case? People say that the only way to get the real full ZFS support is to install Solaris. I understand that the best choice for Linux would be ext4, but I really havent found a way how to convert to ext4 from NTFS without sacrificing all the data. On the other hand I have doubts whether changing from NTFS to ZFS while using Linux is really wise. Thanks for any tips.

I used: $ sudo pkg list -u to see the list of packages that are out of date, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to say, "ok, update them". I have scoured the web for clues, but to no avail :( This is classic Sun Solaris-type patching that is the exact reason I am now on Linux. Please help!! Thanks :) Jamie

  • mass deploy Oracle patches with OEM with different OS's

    - by bobsmith12
I have not been able to get this to work. We are running our OEM grid control database/oms on Red Hat 5(32 bit), but our databases are on Solaris x86-64. I could not mass deploy agents since the Operating Systems were different. When I download patches it is by OS. Is there a way to mass deploy to multiple operating systems? I have alot of databases. I was given the redhat server for OEM because it was available. We are have 10.1,10.2, and 11.1 databases. OEM DB is 10.2.0.5

  • Sun OS 5.10 not honoring .hushlogin

    - by nixomose
I scp and ssh a zillion times a day, and because of our corporate policy I can't get rid of /etc/issue or /etc/motd on the destination machines. So whereas I just want to see the results of my scp or ssh, all I ever end up seeing is thousands of copies of the motd. .hushlogin doesn't seem to be honored. Any other ideas on how to get rid of the message display? Is there some sshd config setting I don't know about (though I probably couldn't change that either)? Is there some curiously sunos/solaris specific way to achieve the goal?

  • Cached css/javascript files on Sun Java System Web Server

    - by Derp
I'm doing front-end web development in a Solaris 10 / Sun Java System Web Server 7.0U2 environment. I have noticed that changes to static css or javascript files often do not take effect immediately, whereas changes to static html files always do. My best guess is that a default setting in the web server causes it to cache certain file types in order to provide reasonable performance out of the box. I don't have the admin server running--I'll need to edit the config files by hand. What change(s) can I make so that all of my css and javascript edits take effect immediately? Thanks!

    Hi I'm new to ubuntu and linux so this might be a very begginers question. I have several partitions on my pc and I want to be able to access them with the console. When I type: sudo fdisk -l I get: /dev/sda1 * 2048 97656831 48827392 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda2 97656832 234375167 68359168 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda3 * 234375168 312500223 39062528 83 Linux /dev/sda4 312502270 625141759 156319745 5 Extended /dev/sda5 312502272 318359551 2928640 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda6 318361600 625141759 153390080 83 Linux But it seams that the address is existing. for example I cant do cd /dev/sda4. How can I access the partitions with the console?
