• Ubuntu 9.1 - Audio coming from both speakers and headphones

  I have an HP Compaq nc8230 that has an annoying little problem with it's audio devices in Ubuntu 9.1. When I have the headphones plugged in, the audio continues to play simultaneously through the speakers no matter what. I'm not sure what kind of sound card this computer has, but in WIndows XP, Vista, 7 and OSx86 I didn't have this problem. I've tried using 3 different headphones and it didn't change anything. Please help.

• Script Editor in Snow Leopard painfully slow after adding apps to Library

  I have four different Macs that I use from time to time, and on each of them I notice a constant: adding more items to AppleScript Editor's Library window slows performance of mundane operations (opening a dictionary, switching between Library window and editor window, scrolling in the Library window, etc). In Leopard, I noticed little to no latency in opening a dictionary in Script Editor, but Snow Leopard's AppleScript Editor kills my productivity by making me wait on it with most UI interactions with the Library window.

• Good Word HTML cleaner?

  There are a ton of utilities for cleaning the html produced by Word. Some are online services and some are Windows desktop apps. Does anyone have good experience with any? I am looking for one that does a very good job of maintaining the layout and text styles of the original document. The people using the tool know very little or no html which means they can't be spending time doing html editing to fix the layout.

• How to use offline mode in Safari

  So, I'm kind of falling in love with Safari 4 (sorry, Firefox). However, I'm the type who likes my browser cache. Doing a little bit of Googling, it seems Safari does have an offline mode like Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera (where you can view cached web pages offline), but I haven't found any way to activate it and just navigating to web pages with no net connection seems not to do it either. So, does Safari even really have an offline mode, and if so, how does one use it?

  I need to create a development environments with Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 on VMWare. Are there free (unrestricted) development type versions of those respective operating systems distributed by Microsoft? Or is there some kind of cheap software network/membership i can sign up for? Other companies like Oracle make this very easy to download dev copies of Solaris and OEL, but Microsoft seems a little too protective of their operating systems and don't make it easy.

• Using Amazon S3 for multiple remote data site uploads, securely

  I've been playing about with Amazon S3 a little for the first time and like what I see for various reasons relating to my potential use case. We have multiple (online) remote server boxes harvesting sensor data that is regularly uploaded every hour or so (rsync'ed) to a VPS server. The number of remote server boxes is growing regularly and forecast to keep growing (hundreds). The servers are geographically dispersed. The servers are also automatically built, therefore generic with standard tools and not bespoke per location. The data is many hundreds of files per day. I want to avoid a situation where I need to provision more VPS storage, or additional servers every time we hit the VPS capacity limit, after every N server deployments, whatever N might be. The remote servers can never be considered fully secure due to us not knowing what might happen to them when we are not looking. Our current solution is a bit naive and simply restricts inbound rsync only over ssh to known mac address directories and a known public key. There are plenty of holes to pick in this, I know. Let's say I write or use a script like s3cmd/s3sync to potentially push up the files. Would I need to manage hundreds of access keys and have each server customized to include this (do-able, but key management becomes nightmarish?) Could I restrict inbound connections somehow (eg by mac address), or just allow write-only to any client that was running the script? ( i could deal with a flood of data if someone got into a system? ) having a bucket per remote machine does not seem feasible due to bucket limits? I don't think I want to use a single common key as if one machine is breached then potentially, a malicious hack could get access to the filestore key and start deleting for ll clients, correct? I hope my inexperience has not blinded me to some other solution that might be suggested! I've read lots of examples of people using S3 for backup, but can't really find anything about this sort of data collection, unless my google terminology is wrong... I've written more than I should here, perhaps it can be summarised thus: In a perfect world I just want to have one of our techs install a new remote server into a location and it automagically starts sending files home with little or no intervention, and minimises risk?   I checked event log today and between mass of failed audit events I found some successes which originated from not my country. However they look a little weird and no process is specified, while when I logon using RDP it says winlogon.exe I am wondering whether that means my system was compromised or there are good variants and it doesnt mean its all that bad. I am using a VPS solution if thats useful.

  What's the best way to rip a Blu-ray disc to an Xbox 360 compatible format, while preferably maintaining surround sound and as little video encoding as possible? As far as I can tell, the 360 technically supports both AVC and VC-1 (though if at those bit rates is questionable), so I'm kind of hoping that you could do it without actually re-encoding the video at all and, instead, just processing the audio and the re-muxing everything together in a new file.

  I've done some reading and apparently the main obstacle to fast remote profile syncing is that Samba takes a long time to transfer lots of little files like cookies. After reading Roaming Profiles: Best Practices , I plan to use Folder Redirection, but I want my users to be able to login as rapidly as possible, even if it means that their data is still coming in when they reach their desktop. Is there a way to do this with GPO or a third party add-on that can load user profile data faster/speed up the login process for users?

  Is it possible to limit how much CPU a virtual machine can use with VMWare Player? I use VMWare to run a Windows XP virtual machine. I want to keep it on in the background all the time. The real computer runs Windows 7 and is sometimes a little bit short of memory. That's why I want to check if I can throttle the VM down to the bare minimum to keep it running in the background constantly without interfering too much.

• Windows 2003 Dynamic Disk error

  Hi, I was trying to ghost a partition on a Windows 2003 server, using Ghost 2003. Unfortunately things went horribly wrong, and now I can't boot back into my system. As you can see, Ghost creates a wee little partition to do its dirty work, and has dislodged my other partitions. Partition 2 in the image below is my C drive.   New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!! • phpmyadmin login should not expire on ubuntu 10.04

  On ubuntu 10.04 the phpmyadmin config is a little bit scattered. I want to set the loginexpiration time to zero, should never expire, this is a secured setup behind a firewall. I think it is 3600 by default but cannot find the setting. Where is it? Edit: I actually changed it in /etc/phpmyadmin/conf.inc.php which seems the recommended place for ubuntu. The other files mentioned below might be overwritten on updates.

  What is the best, lightest-weight way to make the middle mouse button (i.e. clicking the scroll wheel) behave as a double-left-click in Windows 7? I want this to be universal, so that other programs don't ever see the middle-click, they just see a double-left-click. I used to do it under Windows XP with Logitech SetPoint drivers but it was always an ugly solution - installing a huge ( 50 MB!) binary just to enable one simple little bit of functionality.

• Directory Browsing on Apache

  I am listing a couple of stuff that I want people to download for my school and remembered that some sites had directory browsing done with cool little icons displaying the file types. I wanted to do this myself and felt that the default directory browsing of apache is just too plain and IndexOptions +FancyIndexing is a bit 'old'. Any nice jQuery based Web 2.0ish stuff out there for this particular purpose. The files are .debs, .exes, .iso, .zip etc. Thanks!
