  Is there some tool in xcode that allows me to store snippets of code I often reuse in various applications so I do not have to retype it each time? I am talking about things like all the code that goes into defining Table Delegate Methods and Table Source Methods, UIAlertViews code and such. I just would like to have my own private repository where I can put snippets of code I think I may need in the future in other apps. Is there anything like that? Thanks for any help.

• HTML text-area editor for code that traps TAB key

  Hello, I have looked for months now, for JavaScript-based HTML editor I can embed onto my web pages to replace a TEXTAREA, but to enable me to edit CODE in a friendly, closer to a real editor, way. All editors I've tried (RadEditor from Telerik, FCKEditor, TinyMCE, etc etc), do not trap the TAB key, very useful when editing HTML code onto a page, to help format the code properly. I'm not talking about syntax highlighting, as that would be an awesome plus. But I am mainly wondering if there is such an editor. I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

• Should one use < or <= in a for loop

  If you had to iterate through a loop 7 times, would you use: for (int i = 0; i < 7; i++) or: for (int i = 0; i <= 6; i++) There are two considerations: performance readability For performance I'm assuming Java or C#. Does it matter if "less than" or "less than or equal to" is used? If you have insight for a different language, please indicate which. For readability I'm assuming 0-based arrays. UPD: My mention of 0-based arrays may have confused things. I'm not talking about iterating through array elements. Just a general loop. There is a good point below about using a constant to which would explain what this magic number is. So if I had "int NUMBER_OF_THINGS = 7" then "i <= NUMBER_OF_THINGS - 1" would look weird, wouldn't it.

• C# and MySQL .NET Connector - Any way of preventing SQL Injection attacks in a generic class?

  My idea is to create some generic classes for Insert/Update/Select via a C# (3.5) Winforms app talking with a MySQL database via MySQL .NET Connector 6.2.2. For example: public void Insert(string strSQL) { if (this.OpenConnection() == true) { MySqlCommand cmd = new MySqlCommand(strSQL, connection); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); this.CloseConnection(); } } Then from anywhere in the program I can run a query with/without user input by just passing a SQL query string. Reading around on SO is starting to give me the indication that this may lead to SQL injection attacks (for any user-input values). Is there anyway of scrubbing the inputted strSQL or do I need to go and create individual parameterized queries in every method that needs to do a database function?

• Embed Javascript Module within Flex application

  I have a large module written in JS which uses Canvas to draw and animate trees. This module was written for a product which is now being migrated to flex. Is there a way in flex to embed this JS module as is? Or would I have to rewrite the whole module in AS3 (shudder)? • How do I load the Oracle schema into memory instead of the hard drive?

  I have a certain web application that makes upwards of ~100 updates to an Oracle database in succession. This can take anywhere from 3-5 minutes, which sometimes causes the webpage to time out. A re-design of the application is scheduled soon but someone told me that there is a way to configure a "loader file" which loads the schema into memory and runs the transactions there instead of on the hard drive, supposedly improving speed by several orders of magnitude. I have tried to research this "loader file" but all I can find is information about the SQL* bulk data loader. Does anyone know what he's talking about? Is this really possible and is it a feasible quick fix or should I just wait until the application is re-designed?

But what is the right license or disclaimer statement ? Can I use BSD license with ...   I once built a very good web application in ASP (classic) back in 2001 and extensively used XmlHttpRequest object in it. (I was lucky that the clients were only using IE, and only IE supported this object at that time). Then later when people started talking about AJAX in 2005, It felt good to have used something ahead (or early) of its time. Well, maybe this does not qualify to be listed as something done ahead of its time. Which programming technology/technique/practice have you done that was ahead of this time. • Substring and its reverse in a string

  My professor was talking about this in a Dynamic programming class and asked us to think over it. She gave us some examples as well. Given a string, we were to find the longest continuous subsequence whose reverse is also a subsequence present in the given string. Example: INPUT: pqrstuvtsrv OUTPUT: i=3, k=2 rst -> tsr (rst found first at i=3 and for 2 more positions) INPUT: mpqrsrqp OUTPUT: i=2, k=6 pqrsrqp in reverse INPUT: mmpqssss OUTPUT: i=5, k=3 I thought of putting the string and its reverse into 2 different arrays and comparing character by character. But I'm sure this is not the best way to do it. Any suggestions as to what could be the most efficient ?

  I don't like real-time debugging much, but if it's necessary I'll do it. Is there any way to figure out what line of code a StackTrace in Objective-C refers to? What about the variable it refers to? • How do I get developers to treat test code as "real" code?

  In the last two companies I've been at, there is an overriding mentality among developers that it's okay to write unit tests in a throw-away style. Code that they would never write in the actual product suddenly becomes OK in the unit tests. I'm talking Rampant copying and pasting between tests Code styling rules not followed Hard-coded magic strings across tests No object-oriented thought or design for integration tests, mocks or helper objects (250 line single-function tests!) .. and so on. I'm highly dissatisfied with the quality of the test code. Generally we do not do code reviews on our test assemblies, and we also do not enforce style or code analysis of them on our build server. Is that the only way to overcome this inertia about test quality? I'm looking for ideas to take to our developers, without having to go to higher management saying that we need to use resources for enforcement of test quality (although I will if I have to). Any thoughts or similar experiences?

  Hi everybody, I have a little (maybe the answer could require a book) question about web services and server side programming. But first, a little preamble. Recently we have seen new kind of applications & games using some kind of real-time interaction with a database, or more generally, with other users. I'm talking about shared drawing canvas, games like this , or simple chats, or the Android app "a World of Photo", where in real time you see who is online, to share your photos, etc. Now my question: Are all these apps based on classic TCP client/server architectures or is there a way to make them in a simpler way, like a web platform like LAMP? What I'm asking, in other words is: Can PHP+MySQL (or JSP, or RoR, or any other server language) provide a way to make online users communicate in real time and share data? Is there a way to do that without the ugly and heavy mechanism of temporary tables? Thank you! I hope I've been clear.

• Setting the background colour/highlight colour for a given string range using Core Text

  I have some text laid out using Core Text in my iPhone app. I'm using NSAttributedString to set certain styles within the text for given ranges. I can't seem to find an attribute for setting a background / highlight colour, though it would seem it is possible. • Git: delete files in a branch, what happens when a merge takes place

  I'm relatively new to source control (at least complex source control). If I'm developing a set of features in a branch, and I happen to delete some cruft out of the source tree in this branch, what happens when I merge? Are the files properly deleted in the trunk/master? Is there anything I should avoid doing that is typically problematic when developing in a branch? This is a 2-3 developer system, so we're not talking about massive changes to source. I'm told you should pull from the trunk often to avoid tangled manual merge situations, and this makes sense. • Refering to javascript instance methods with a pound/hash sign

  This question is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/736120/why-are-methods-in-ruby-documentation-preceded-by-a-pound-sign I understand why in Ruby instance methods are proceeded with a pound sign, helping to differentiate talking about SomeClass#someMethod from SomeObject.someMethod and allowing rdoc to work. And I understand that the authors of PrototypeJS admire Ruby (with good reason) and so they use the hash mark convention in their documentation. My question is: is this a standard practice amongst JavaScript developers or is it just Prototype developers who do this? Asked another way, is it proepr for me to refer to instance methods in comments/documentation as SomeClass#someMethod? Or should my documentation refer to `SomeClass.someMethod?

• How do I find out what objects points to another object i Xcode Instruments

  I am trying to analyze some code of mine, looking for memory leaks. My problem is that some of my objects are leaking (at least as far as I can see), but the Leaks tool doesn't detect the leaks. My guess is that some iPhone OS object still holds pointers to my leaked objects. The objects I am talking about are subclasses of UIViewController that I use like this: MyController *controller = [[MyController alloc] initWithNibName:@"MyController" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:controller animated:YES]; When these objects are no longer needed I do: [self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES]; Without a [controller release] call right now. Now when I look at what objects that gets created I see a lot of MyController instances that never gets destroyed. To me these are memory leaks, but to the Leaks tool they are not. Can someone here tell me if there is some way Instruments can tell me what objects are pointing to my MyController instances and thereby making them not count as memory leaks?

  Hi, I am having a bit of trouble getting my head around the following erlang code -module(threesix). -export([quicksort/1]). quicksort(Pivot, Left, Right, []=_Src) -> {Left, Pivot, Right}; quicksort(Pivot, Left, Right, [H|T]=_Src) when H < Pivot -> quicksort(Pivot, [H|Left], Right, T); quicksort(Pivot, Left, Right, [H|T]=_Src) -> quicksort(Pivot, Left, [H|Right], T). quicksort([]) -> []; quicksort([H|T]=_List) -> {Left, Pivot, Right} = quicksort(H, [], [], T), quicksort(Left) ++ [Pivot] ++ quicksort(Right). I am specifically talking about the use of _Src and _List in the parameters. Are these simply for documentation as I cannot see why they are used? Thanks Paul

• Visualizing read-only folders

  My application displays a folder structure in a tree. The user can browse the contents in these folders, and drag content into the folders. However, some of these folders are readonly (meaning no content can be dragged into them). I'm looking for a clear way of depicting this to the user, so they are aware which folders they can drag to before actually having to try it, i.e. hover state. Something not too alarming or interrupting (no big red crosses overlayed on top of the folder icons, for instance), preferably a recognized standard. Specifically, we are talking about an Outlook add-in showing a SharePoint folder tree here, but I'd much rather get the answer from a generic viewpoint. From the top of my head, I simply don't seem to know any applications that visually mark readonly folders.

• How Should I Print Documentation from Google Code?

  Google does a decent job of documenting their API (like Closure http://code.google.com/closure/compiler/docs/overview.html) but I find it hard to read because it's broken into such short pages. I like to leaf through my docs and read it on paper. Has anyone found a good way to print from the documentation on Google Code. It could be a PDF, or even just a long page with lots of content. Please note, I'm not talking about the Wikis in the Open Source side of Google Code. I'm referring to the API docs published by Google.

  I have the opportunity to go back for MSCS and the closest college's main research is in computer security and forensics. I've always been interested in computer networks and security but I have no interest whatsoever to run cables or add users to the network( which is what the network people do where I currently work ). I wanted to know how may I find out the types of day to day task a computer security expert does? I don't mean the jobs you find on dice or indeed.   Is there a set of open standards technologies that I can use to achieve the same way of development as in Flex and Sivlerlight? I am talking about componentization, separation of concerns, rich graphics, states and effects . Please point out some tutorials and other resources if possible. P.S. I need to know how a Flex / Silverlight developer could design and implement an application in roughly the same way (imagine a rich HTML tag set, much like XAML/MXML, behind which stands JavaScript responsible for handling events and business logic.
