  In my first attempts at building my code, I strictly went with either native or on-disk code. I specifically wrote the on-disk code to only use features that worked in-memory. This lead to one majorly silly bit of code, used to create system assigned key values. How would I create a customer number that was unique.   In ubuntu, I can run firefox with the command firefox in Terminal, or click the button in dock or panel. How does this possible with ubuntu? I googled to find the name launcher, but I don't know exactly how does it work. Q1 : How to make launcher? If I make a GUI program, does that mean that I need to create launcher to start by clicking it? Q2 : Can I make a launcher for whatever program, even if it's not a GUI program? Q3 : How to link a launcher? How can make a link to a launcher in a Desktop to start a program? Q4 : The idea of launcher is unique to ubuntu?   A simple question about rsnapshot. In order to perform daily backups I'm going to add lines to cron in my Ubuntu. Then, why do I have also these lines in the rsnapshot.conf ? ######################################### # BACKUP INTERVALS # # Must be unique and in ascending order # # i.e. hourly, daily, weekly, etc. # ######################################### interval hourly 6 interval daily 7 interval weekly 4 #interval monthly 3 If I use cron, should I disable them ? thanks ps. I've just realized that in the crontab I still have "hourly" and "daily". Should I then uncomment only the one I use in the crontab ? • A lot of 302 redirects

  I have a website for which one month stat shows: Unique Visitors 6274 Total Visitors 7260 Pages visited 9520 Hits 88891 Whats concerns me about is the HTTP status code: 302 Moved temporarily (redirect) 36302 How come 40% hits are being redirected. • Largest successful JavaScript project? [closed]

  A common theme in the GWT community is "I wouldn't want to build a project of THAT size using a pure JavaScript library!" What is the largest project that you have successfully delivered with frontend functionality written in JavaScript? (not Java or GWT) Please provide at least a hand-wavy SLOC estimate of the unique JS code (not including libraries, frameworks, toolkits, test code, generated code, server-side processing such as PHP, etc.) that was in the finished product. • HTML5 clicking objects in canvas

  I have a function in my JS that gets the user's mouse click on the canvas. Now lets say I have a random shape on my canvas (really its a PNG image which is rectangular) but i don't want to include any alpha space. My issue lies with lets say i click some where and it involves a pixel of one of the images. The first issue is how do you work out the pixel location is an object on the map (and not the grass tiles behind). Secondly if i clicked said image, if each image contains its own unique information how do you process the click to load the correct data. Note I don't use libraries I personally prefer the raw method. Relying on libraries doesn't teach me much I find.

• Tumblr Custom URL Not Working

  I have bought a domain that I want to use as a unique Tumblr website but I can't get the url to pick up on Tumblr settings. The domain is a .com registered with 123-reg. I've set the CNAME to the correct tumblr url and also set the A record too. When I visit the url I get the Tumblr error page so I know that the domain is pointing, however when I go to settings in Tumblr and "Test" the url it says that it's not pointing and I can't save it. What could be the problem?

• What is Perl's relation to hackers? [closed]

  I know Perl is a language revered by many hackers (as in hacker vs cracker) and respected by many good programmers for its expressiveness. I also realize it is useful to know and it's very handy at generalizing common Unix tasks (Unix here includes Linux and Cygwin). I also know that being a good hacker probably means you're a good programmer in general (references on this one are sparse around the web, but about everything Paul Graham has ever written seems approving of this statement to me). So my question is whether there is a reason that attracts hackers to Perl in particular? Will learing Perl improve my general programming, problem-solving and hacking skills if done properly? Does it present unique tools that are more useful to a hacker?

• Expressions that are idiomatic in one language but not used or impossible in another

  I often find myself working in unfamiliar languages. I like to read code written by others and then jump in and write something myself before going back and learning the corners of each language. To speed up this process, it really helps to know a few of the idioms you'll encounter ahead of time. Some of these, I've found are fairly unique. In Python you might do something like this: '\n'.join(listOfThings) Not all languages allow you to call methods on string literals like this. In C, you can write a loop like this: int i = 50; while(i--) { /* do something 50 times */ } C lets you decrement in the loop condition expression. Most more modern languages disallow this. Do you have any other good examples? I'm interested in often used constructions not odd corner cases.

• Is it Considered Good SQL practice to use GUID to link multiple tables to same Id field?

  I want to link several tables to a many-to-many(m2m) table. One table would be called location and this table would always be on one side of the m2m table. But I will have a list of several tables for example: Cards Photographs Illustrations Vectors Would using GUID's between these tables to link it to a single column in another table be considered 'Good Practice'? Will Mysql let me to have it automatically cascade updates and delete? If so, would multiple cascades lead to an issues? UPDATE I've read that GUID (a hex number) Generally takes up more space in a database and slows queries down. However I could still generate 'unique' ids by just having the table initial's as part of the id so that the table card's id would be c0001, and then Illustrations be I001. Regardless of this change, the questions still stands.

• Multiple objects listening for the same key press

  I want to learn the best way to implement this: I have a hero and an enemy on the screen. Say the hero presses "k" to get out a knife, I want the enemy to react in a certain way. Now, if in my game loop I have a listener for the key press event and I identify a "k" was pressed, the quick and easy way would be to do: // If K pressed // hero.getOoutKnife() // enemy.getAngry() But what is commonly done in more complex games, where say I have 10 types of character on screen and they all need to react in a unique way when the letter "k" is pressed? I can think of a bunch of hacky ways to do this, but would love to know how it should be done properly. I am using C++, but I'm not looking for a code implementation, just some ideas on how it should be done the right way.

• Define outgoing ip address when using ssh

  I have an ubuntu server machine (12.04) with 4 IP addresses for different websites that require unique ssl certificates. I sometimes ssh out from this box and the box I am going to I have to tell it what IP address I will be coming from. How do I specify which of the 4 ip addresses I want to use as my outgoing IP address? If i do an ifconfig it appears that I am going out as the last ipaddress. I guess you would want to specify either the address or the interface.... Thanks in advance! -Mark

• Using Instance Nodes, worth it?

  I am making a 2d game where there are various environments with lots and lots of objects. There is a forest scene with like 1200 objects in total(trees mainly), of which around 100 are visible on the camera at any given time, as you move through the level. These are comprised of around 20 different kind of trees and other props. Each object is usually 2-6 triangles with a transparent texture. My developer asked me to replace each object in the scene with a node, and keeping only a minimal amount of actual objects which would be 300+ or so(?), since there are a few modified unique meshes. So he can instantiate the actual objects to keep the game light. Is this actually effective? And if so how much? I 've read about draw calls and such and I suppose that if I combine each texture (10 kinds of trees) in 1 mesh it will have the same effect?

  We have a unique situation (at least for me, first time seeing this). We have a web form where accountants can fill in requests and that part is taken care of. But after their login we redirect them to a third-party website where we need more information from them. The process is crazy right now since we have to give our account login info to all people filing with us. So is there a way in PHP or any other solution where we can after that form on our website auto login with our information to that third party website in a way that our credentials are not visible to the users using the service?

  Possible Duplicate: keyword stuffing in SEO I've seen a few posts on here and elsewhere that talk about the amount of unique keywords used, or aimed, for in a text. But how important is the frequency of keywords for SEO optimized copy, the higher the better? Is there a certain percentage to aim at? For example, I currently have copy aimed for a specific keyword. The rate of this keyword is that it makes up 2% of all words. Is this too low? Too high? The higher the better?

• Will duplicate international (i18n) content hinder SEO rankings?

  Google clearly states that duplicate content within a single, or multiple, domains is not advised. This is understood, but I am not sure of any exceptions for sites with region-specific content that is often replicated across locales. For example, a site's /en-us/about page could be identical to /en-uk/about, whereas most likely /en-ja/about is unique. Are GYM smart enough to understand that the initial URL depth is a locale specifier? Is there any robots.txt or header, etc, trickery that I should include to outline the site's international structure?
