• Fedora 11 System - Failed Hard Drive Removed, and Boot gets GRUB Hard Disk Error

  Greetings, I have a machine with a 120GB ATA drive that has what I thought to be non-essential data on it. I also have a 320GB SATA hard drive with the OS/Application/Files (good data I want to keep). My 120GB ATA is failing I believe, as my computer kept slowing to a halt. However, when I move the drive from BIOS my computer will not start, says "GRUB Hard Disk Error". I know that my Fedora system has an LVM setup. I am looking to just remove the 120GB drive from "the mix", and just have one hard drive. How do I recover ? Thank you. I have access to a Linux Live CD right now and can make any changes. However, it won't boot into my OS - it fails. • Windows 7 unload driver/disconnect usb before restart

  In xp, my Tascam US 122 usb audio interface works fine. On my windows 7 computer the device works, however when i restart/shutdown it hangs at the "shutting down" screen forever. If the usb cable is removed prior to initiating restart/shutdown then everything goes fine, the computer restarts as normal. This is a known problem, running any other driver in compatibility mode doesnt fix the problem. Is there a method I can use to unload the device/drivers so that I dont have to reach round physically and disconnect the cable. Somebody suggested a spdt switch on the cable itself, but I am looking for a simpler method. Surely I can automate the unloading of the device through a script or such? Any ideas are greatly welcomed thanks

• Host hijacks USB printer from VirtualBox machine

  I have Ubuntu 9.1 running Windows XP in VirtualBox. Windows XP is a print server (there is no Linux driver for our printer). The printer is connected via USB and its USB filter is added to virtual machine settings. The problem is that every several hours Ubuntu tries to access the printer (trying to install it) and disconnects it from the virtual machine. The printer remains disconnected until I connect it again manually. I thought it is a problem with Windows power management but disabling sleep/standby in Windows didn't help. Please, advise.

  I have a new printer and a old (Windows 98) system (that can't be upgraded). I've been told that some of the drivers for older printers of the same make are very likely to work just fine for it if I can talk windows into using them. Is there a way to edit the map of device IDs (VID/PID?) to USB drivers? The specific kind of tool I'm looking for should work for any kind of USB drivers, not just printers. OTOH if someone knows of a technique that work for some kinds of printers, that could be of (general) interest.

• Flash stream makes my internet slow and cpu rush

  When I try to watch a live Flash stream, my CPU usage goes up to 75% and my Internet speed goes down. If I run a test before the video-stream, my speed is ~40/10Mbps and during the stream it drops to 0.1-0.5Mbps. The stream is laggy and I can only watch one to two seconds at a time, start/stop/start/stop. I have cleared my history, cache, cookies, temp files, and so on. I have searched for malware and took care of that. I have updated my drivers, reinstalled Flash and everything else I can think of, but it remains slow. I had this problem before and it just started working normally from one day to another. Could it be a hardware problem?

• ubuntu Grub boot hangs on external usb drive

  Hi, i just gave xubuntu another try and installed it ordinarily on a external usb harddisk. I have another harddisk installed inside the laptop that has Windows Xp on it. Now the problem: When I boot from the external drive the boot menu of Grub 2 shows up and i see all installed bootable partitions including windows. Now I select Xubuntu and wait. When the Xubuntu Logo shows up the boot process hangs. Now the funny thing. When the logo shows up I can unplug the usb drive and reconnect it real fast. Then the boot process will continue!!!   Hi, I have a USB drive with two partitions in it. one hidden and the other normal. i have an application which swaps the memory and runs the flash application in hidden zone. The problem is that the application works fine on windows7 and when run on WINXp, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when i copy the application to desktop and run , it runs with no glitch I was facing the same problem on WIN7 too , but it was running as required when i ran it using "Run in Xp mode" and then i applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. the application is built using VC++ 2008 , What might be the problem.

  Is it viable to run (i.e. reference the vmx/vhd directly from the mounted drive) a VM (vmware running Windows Seven) off of an external HD via USB? I mean, I know it's possible, but I guess I'm asking if USB provides enough bandwidth for normal usage... If so, are there any particular brands that may be better or worse? I know that ESATA would be a more viable setup, but my laptop doesn't have an ESATA port. Currently I use the VM to segregate all of my work development servers and software from my main machine; so I will be running all development servers and tools on the VM directly.

  As you probably know already, an iPad requires a certain power on USB port to be charged from. Thus, some motherboard manufacturers (such as ASUS, Gigabyte etc) had released a special driver that recognizes that an iPad is connected to the port and adjust the USB power accordingly. On one of my computers (Gigabyte motherboard) it works fine. But other one is Dell Optiplex 780 and the regular googling by "<motherboard type> + iPad charging" doesn't seem to bring encouraging results. Just for completeness: no, the iPad is not being charged without any special driver installed (out of the box) either. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

• Dead-simple USB-based Windows partition cloner?

  Clonezilla is a fine open-source tool, but it requires going through several screens. Since I need to save/restore the same Windows partition, I was wondering if someone knew of a tool (open-source or not) that is easier to use and boots off a USB keydrive. Ideally, it'll save the two commands to save/restore a partition, so I just need to boot the host from the USB key, choose the command, and it'll take care of business.   I am unable to play "protected" flash video, such as Amazon Prime Instant Video. From what I've read and uncovered, this seems to be due to a lack of HAL being installed on my computer. Confirmation that it is required for protected video can be seen towards the beginning of http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/flash-player-11-problems-playing.html However, hal is not in the gentoo portage tree, and in any case has been deprecated and replaced by udev. How can I go about getting Amazon Prime Instant Video to work again? I was considering grabbing the source from http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/hal but the links there won't load, and trying to install it from old ebuilds or from overlays which claim to still support it (e.g. kde-sunset) result in a compilation error: In file included from addon-generic-backlight.c:38:0: /usr/include/glib-2.0/glib/gmain.h:21:2: error: #error "Only <glib.h> can be included directly." Has anyone else solved this issue?

• Asus RT-N66U forgets USB-Printer

  about a week ago I bought the new Asus RT-N66U as the new Router in our little company. There are about 5 clients and 2 printers. There's a USB-only printer as well, therefor we bougth a router with USB-printer sharing. The setup and everything works smooth, but then after one day, and I still haven't found out why, suddenly the printer dosen't show up in the list of connected devices in the routers webinterface anymore. Of course I loose the possibility of printig, even though the printer shows up as "online" in the system settings. Can anybody guess the reason for this problem? Thank you very much

  My girlfriend needs to install Windows XP over Ubuntu on her PC, because she need to run some software that Wine and a visual machine can't handle as well as the 'real' thing. Problem is, it seems very difficult to make a bootable flash drive with the files from a XP .iso from Ubuntu. All the guides I could find was about Windows 7, formatting the USB as NTFS, then use UNetbootin to extract the files to the USB. Problem is, that only works with 7, not XP. Does anyone know how I can make a bootable XP flash drive? Thanks! It's really important.

• Generic Windows 98 USB Drive drivers?

  I've got an old Win98 machine that I'd like to pull some data off of. (Tens of gigs of data, actually.) The machine still runs fine, but due to the age, it doesn't have a cd burner, and the pre-NT networking won't connect to SMB shares without a fair amount of wrenching on the registry that I don't really want to do. What I really want to do is plug in an external USB hard drive and copy the files. But - Win98 didn't ship with generic USB drive drivers, and external drives don't ship with them these days. Can anyone point me at a reputable generic driver I can install?

  I lent my 3 USB modem to a friend because her Meteor USB modem had run out of credit. The 3 modem worked on her machine fine once the driver was installed. She bought Meteor credit a couple of days later, uninstalled the 3 driver and she only now seems to get on the Meteor server, when you try IE8 or Firefox you get the message “Page could not be found”. • Windows doesn't recognise my USB key anymore (it used to work)

  I use my friend's USB flash drive (Corsair flash voyager 16gb) to transfer files from my laptop to my desktop computer. However, since a couple of days my laptop stopped recognizing the USB key.. while there is still no problems with all other computers. I use Windows 7 64 bits if that can help. I tried uninstalling the driver, rebooting and all those kind of tricks, but it won't work. When I connect it and open the "My computer" window, I see "Removable Disk (G:)" for a moment, then it disappears... then it reappears again and it keeps doing that periodically. I can't even right click then hit "Properties" because it disappears. As I recall, it DOES work on every other computers, I think it has to do with the driver but what can I do?

• Logitech USB keyboard driver not found on Windows 7 x64

  I have a Logitech Internet 350 Keyboard which has been working fine on my Lenovo T400 laptop for well over three years. Just within the past week or so, Windows 7 can no longer find the driver for it. There is no custom driver from Logitech for this device -- it uses the generic Windows USB HID driver. The keyboard works just fine from the BIOS (and Linux which I dual boot this machine), but Windows 7 cannot find or load the driver for it. Any ideas? I smell a Windows update problem, but have no idea how to fix it, and I really am not interested in rolling back updates. New Info: I just tested a generic Dell USB keyboard and it worked just find, with Windows immediately recognizing the device and installing the HID keyboard class driver. So, it seems that Windows has decided not to recognize my specific Logitech keyboard device. I still suspect a Windows update issue, but I would love to hear other suggestions.

• Where can I connect this USB 3.0 cord?

  My motherboard has 2 USB 3.o slots in the back, where the usual slots go, but the tower also supports 1 or 2 USB 3.0 ports in the front, above the DVD drive. So, there is a cord coming out of those ports that has an end exactly like the one in the attached picture. I am not able to find a matching port on the mobo, so I presume it doesn't have one, and I would need an adapter or else just leave it inoperable. I have an ASUS P8Z68-V LX and an Antec 900 tower.

  I'm running Jolicloud 1.2 from a USB stick. I clicked the "run but don't install option" at the start up menu and then i created an account. It says I am logged in as guest mode. How can I copy files from my original c:\ which is listed in the file manager to my usb stick. There's no button and drag and drop doesn't work is there a way to get into terminal? Is it perhaps restricted because I am a "guest"?

• Copying large file from SD to HDD via USB failing on Ubuntu

  Hi, I'm attempting to copy some large files from my camera (Canon EOS 500D) to my laptop, which is running 64 bit Ubuntu 9.04. I am using USB to connect the two devices. For most files, it is simply a matter of control-C and control-V. I have done this successfully many times with both photos and small movies (eg. 180MB). However, when I attempt to do this with very large files (eg. 3GB), the copy seems to start with a lot of activity both on the camera and laptop, but after 10 minutes or so the camera is automatically unmounted and the copy fails to complete. I have read that this might be due to the device not mounting as a mass storage device, but I cannot see any obvious way for me to change this behavior. Can anyone offer any direction here? I'll get a USB card reader if necessary, but I'd prefer to be able to just plug my camera in. Thanks
