• Is it safe to run an operating system from an USB flash drive?

  I've got a laptop that has a broken harddisk controller. Replacing the motherboard is quite expensive. I thought about buying a flash drive and installing & running the system from it. However, I'm concerned about some things. Speed: Are they fast enough for swap memory (I've got only 1GB RAM installed.) I'm considering buying 2 or 3 of them and making them into a RAID. What about limited write cycles? How long will it last for a system that has a filesystem with journaling enabled? I'd hate to abandon it. Are there significant differences between internal SSD which are used in modern laptops like MacBooks and USB flash drives? What should I expect in 10 years when the memory wear starts kicking in?

Is it written the on hard disk as temporary files (where exactly is it, appdata or where)? Does that mean the next user of the pc could gain access just clicking that from the system tray and saving to other folders? How about when the system crash and that portable app is not closed the normal way? On the next open, will it stay somewhere on temporary folders?

  I was wondering if it was possible to make a bootlable image of a Windows 7 Pro OEM Installation CD that I have and put it on an USB stick for faster/easier installation. I am asking because we have a couple of PC´s where I´d have to install the OS using the same key (MAK). Also is it possible to kind of populate that image with software that would have to be installed anyways on all machines (like Chrome, Outlook, etc)? It would be really helpful to just install a Windows 7 image with customized software already installed. I would just make an image of an OS and use that, but the hardware of the machines differ.

  Yes, why can't I? I was stashing away some old photography backup zips last night. I could copy 4 of my 1 GB backup zips to my external USB connected hard-drive when I got the error message "Cannot copy file. Not enough free space." (sort of) for a zip of roughly 7 GB. But there are 120 GB free. Why is this? EDIT: Clarification - the files that I could copy was smaller than 4 GB. The failing one was 7 GB. The cause seems to be the FAT32 4 GB limit.

  I've got three external HDDs, all My Books, 500 GB, 750 GB, and 1 TB. If I hook one or two of them up to a computer, everything seems fine. If I hook all three of them to a computer (I've tried this on two different computers, one running Windows XP, one running Windows Vista), the bootup time goes up by more than an order of magnitude. It can suddenly take about 10-20 minutes to boot the machine, whereas before it might take a minute. All three drives work fine on their own. I'm not using any kind of hub; all three are plugged directly into the machine. Is this associated with some kind of inherent limit in USB? Is this bad hardware design in the CPU box? Is this a My Book problem?

  I have a 4Gb USB pen drive that I'm trying to format with FAT32. When I run fdisk, it gives me this message: The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 64349. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) I've tried deleting the partition table, creating new partitions, etc, but they never work. Sometimes I can write to the drive the first time I use it after formatting it, but then it becomes read-only in both Windows and Linux. I've tried this on multiple computers. Am I doing something wrong, or is the drive reporting an incorrect number of cylinders? Is the drive itself likely to be corrupted, and is there anyway to fix this under Windows Vista or Linux? • Why is Windows 7 so slow to log-on when my Wireless USB dongle is plugged in?

  I'm using an Edimax Wireless USB dongle (model EW-7711UTN) on Windows 7 64-bit. The dongle works brilliantly (it was truly plug-and-play) except for one thing. I've noticed that if the dongle is plugged in whilst I'm logging on to Windows it introduces a massive delay - after I type in my password and hit enter, Windows shows the "Welcome" screen, then the screen goes black for 2 minutes or so (with just the cursor showing) before finally displaying my desktop. If I unplug the dongle before I enter my password, Windows goes straight to my desktop. Even though the dongle didn't appear to need drivers for Windows 7, I did try downloading the latest ones from the Edimax website, but that made no difference.

The main thing holding me back from just using ext3 is the problems you can have when two different users (home and work accounts) try to access each others data. Is there any way to mount an ext3 drive with user id mapping?

Will I be able to do that using a USB to DVI adapter or would the limit still be there? Also I've been told the video quality is really bad with these adapters, so is the quality of the video output by these adapters okay for things like web browsing and working on office thing?   The new MacBook Airs don't have optical drives, so you can't install or restore the OS via DVD. They include a little USB stick for this purpose. I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. Does anyone know if it will work with my MacBook Pro? I'm thinking about removing my optical drive to put in another HD. The only sticky situation I might get into is if I need to do an install or restore on the road without an external DVD drive. • How do I force Windows to play sound through the speakers only when a USB headset isn't connected?

  I'm using a speaker set connected through the green audio jack and a headset which I connect through USB. My problem is that every time I connect/disconnect my headset, I have to go through a lot of settings/restart some programs to make the sound go through the speakers again. What I want is to have audio play through the headset when it's connected, but if I disconnect the headset, I want the audio to automatically play through the speakers. For example, if I connect/disconnect the headset while listening to music, I have to restart the application to make the music play through the correct speaker/headset, and it shouldn't be that inconvenient. (I found this somewhat relevant topic, but the problem is that it doesn't really give an answer. (Also, it is 2 years old.))

  Hi, I'm trying to create a bootable usb key with linux (debian) and that can be booted on Macintel hardware. I have read that MAC's EFI can only boot GPT GUID formatted disks. I'm desperately trying to find a good tutorial which explains how to create such a key. Here what I have done so far: create a GUID partition on te key using linux GNU parted create a HFS+ or ext3 partition on the key, with the boot flag on install a linux .iso with unetbootin While all steps were successfull and in some cases I could even boot on a PC, the step of booting on Macintel software failed (on a macbook). I need to precise that I holded the "alt" key while booting the mac and the only visible bootable disk was the hard disk. Thanks for any advice. PS: I have tried with rEFIt as well. In one case I had a "windows" icon but it then failed to boot with a message like "no system found"

Now, I am not getting the option to safely remove mass storage device when I click the icon on the system tray. I tried enabling some of the services, but it didn't help.   Hello I just tried a couple of rescue disks (AVG and Kaspersky), and I was wondering if someone knew of a solution that would work like this: The AV solution boots from a USB key, and works entirely from RAM (where the latest virus DB is downloaded) The user inserts his Windows CD/DVD in the drive If any Windows file is compromised, the AV application fetches a clean version from the CD/DVD and restores it on the hard drive optionally, any compromised drive/user-land application is quarantied, and it is up to the user to reinstall those after he successfully rebooted into a restored Windows setup Have you heard of a solution like this? It seems silly to reinstall a whole Windows computer just because one or a few system files were compromised. Thank you.

  I'm currently doing a project where I have to interact with a circuit I made through the parallel port of a computer. However, my computer doesn't have a parallel port so I borrowed a Parallel to USB adapter cable. The cable didn't come with any drivers, but it's recognized by the device manager as a "USB Printing Support" controller, under the USB section. It seems that old parallel printers can be plugged in and work properly without any problems. • How to safely remove a USB device from 2008 Core server?

  I have a Hyper-V Core server 2008 that I administer via command line and remote tools. We have now got a new backup system in place and it involves me connecting an External USB drive (G:) to backup system state files. My question is how should I safely remove the drive for its weekly offsite swap? I've tried using the devcon tool however it just says the 'removal failed with no devices removed' with no other explanation. I have noticed that there isnt a readily available x64 version of devcon and that might be the cause of the problem. (I have read of people downloading a amd64 version but I have not located it myself, if someone knows where it is please let me know). The devcon command worked on my old 2003 x86 server with the command: devcon remove *3200AVJ_EXTERNAL* I have also looked at using fsutil volume dismount g: but it doesn't seem to work as G: is still listed as a connected volume. I have checked that the volume is not in use via remote tools and the net file command. Both show no open files in the G:\ volume. This could be a decent substitute as it might be used to flush any remaining IO to the volume can anyone clarify? Thanks in advance.

• Will Parallel-port dongle work on USB-to-Parallel Adapter?

  We have a niche program running on a Win2K laptop that uses a security dongle connected to a parallel port for authentication. The laptop is getting creaky and I spent a frustrating night last night shopping various websites for a new laptop that had a parallel port. Seems I'm about three years late [G]. The question I have, is, if I buy a new(ish) laptop and use a USB-to-Parallel Port adapter, will the security dongle work? I know I'm not being specific about the app, but it's one most people wouldn't have heard of anyways. I've been guessing the answer to my question is no, since the app won't know to send a request out to the non-existent port. But, if the process actually is that the dongle sends a message INTO the computer every now and then, then it might work. And, I'm not sure whether the dongle is only needed at program startup time or randomly. The dongle is a 'permanent' addition to the old laptop. This is all about the money. We can have a newly-updated version of the program (which won't add any features we need) for the princely sum of $2700. Or we can spend $500 on a refurbed laptop still running WinXP, add a 30 buck adapter and keep the same solid, stolid performance we've come to appreciate. But it all comes down to the dongle behaviour. Oh, and a dock won't work. The whole laptop issue is about moving about the various nooks and crannies of the building with laptop in hand.
