• I/O ports vs case holes

  I'm in the midst of building a new desktop (first time building my own). I bought MSI NF750-G55 AM3 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI HDMI ATX motherboard, and HEC 6C28BS Black / Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower case. When they both arrived, I realized that the I/O panel on the case doesn't have the same holes that the motherboard needs. So my two questions are: 1) What should I have done? Both claim to be ATX. Do I just need to look more carefully at the pictures? 2) What should I do now? Can I just remove the whole panel (leaving empty spaces between and around the different ports? Specifically, will it cause problems to do this? (I'm looking for advice about question 1, but will accept based on question 2)

• Concurrent backups in SQL Server?

  We currently have our backups managed by a third party company. There are a bunch of agent jobs created that take full backups (4 times a day) and transaction log backups (4 times an hour). We now want to manage our backups in house, but don't want to disable the third party's jobs until we are sure that we have everything configured correctly internally So I am proposing to have a short period (say, a couple of days) where backups are being taken both by the old and the new system. I am wondering what the ramifications of having these two different systems both manage backups, and the potential pitfalls of having backups taken simultaneously. Is this even supported? If so, and bearing in mind that the system can cope with one backup without any noticeable performance degradation, is it fairly logical to assume that it should be able to cope with two simultaneous backups? Currently the load on the server is fairly light and it rarely struggles. Any advice is appreciated

• Run Rails 3 app on a Rails 2 server/machine?

  I'm trying to run a Rail 3 (3.0.10) app on a shared joyent smartmachine server (I don't have root access) which has Rails 2 (2.3.11) installed , and I'm not sure what to do after I freeze my Rails 3 app with bundle install --deployment. It seems like with the Rails 3 and bundler gems not being installed on the server locally, my app isn't even recognizing the local version of Rails I have frozen with my app. Has anyone gotten this to work, or have any advice? The server runs Apache, and I think I can get lighttpd installed too - but I'd rather stay with Apache if I can. Also, if it matters, Passenger is not an installed gem either...and I'm not sure I can freeze that with my app. Update 11/30/2011 12:30 PM EST Bundler is not installed on this server, either. Not sure if having that would enable the new Rails 3 "freeze" (bundle --deployment) to work or not...

  I have to buy one backup software to backup a vmware environment with the following server/applications: mixed microsoft windows 2003/2008/2012 server standard environment sql server 2005/2008 mixed linux centos/ubuntu servers postgresql sap environment exchange 2007 linux fileservers windows fileservers active directory random applications/sqlserver/fileserver on workstations xp/7/8 my hardware is: 5 blades on ibm bladecenter, various san, lto4 on 4gbit fiber channel connected to a windows2003 blade where I will install the backup software (backupexec or arcserve). What are your advice and comments over backupexec vray or arcserve choice ? I know that arcserve have a lower price. I used backup exec for some years but I found it pretty complicated. Thank you.

• PHP DL Function

  Is allowing dynamic extension loading dangerous for some reason? I ask because I need it to include the pecl oauth.so extension to make the Google Adwords PHP SDK work using dl(). I've tried all other alternatives but just can't get it to work: http://php.net/manual/en/function.dl.php enable_dl is set to off by default inside my php.ini, I enabled it, restarted apache and it works. If it's safe to use why is it disabled by default? I'm the only user with access to the server and it will be hosting a web application. Any advice would be helpful!

• Xencenter guest will not boot

  I have xen server free edition. Today one of the guest VM was very loaded and I decided to reboot it. Now it can not start. It is with Ubuntu 10.04 Server. The machine is shown as running in xsconsole and in windows Xen control center. It shows 100 % CPU and 100 % RAM usage. The console shows nothing (it doesn't show boot process). And the worst is that I have no backup. Is there any advice how to see what is going on. I exported it to file and now I am trying it to import it into another server, because I can't reboot the physical server it runs on. Can this save me (the reboot of the server) Thank you

• How to set up port forwarding and firewall settings for torrents using Transmsission on Mac OSX 10.5

  I have picked up bits of advice here and there on the internet and got someway through this tortuous exercise (after it took 18 hours to download the first torrent I tried yesterday - magnet-link for a film). Where I have got stuck is with configuring the firewall on the Netgear Router but I am not sure if I have caused the problem myself by something else I have done configuring the Mac System Preferences for Security or Networking. I have been following the sections of these instructions that seem to apply, although they are written for a different OSX version (don't know which one, but the screen shots do not match what I see) and I am not wanting to set up my Mac as a server and attending to the parts that apply to port forwarding for Netgear rather than LinkSys: http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/static_port_fwd_intro.html I have been trying to follow these instructions: Instructions for DG834, DG834G, DG824M, FR114W, FM114P, FR114P, FR328S, FVL328, FVS328, FVS338, FVX538, FWAG114, FWG114P, or FVS318v3 These routers do port forwarding by assigning port numbers to a "service" associated with the application you want to run. "Rules" are set for particular services. Rules block or allow access, based on various conditions such as the time of day and the name of the service. To Create a New Inbound or Outbound Rule 1. Submit the router's address in an Internet browser. (The default is 192.168.0.1). 2. Enter the router's username and password. 3. From the main menu, click Security > Rules. 4. Click Add for inbound or outbound traffic, as appropriate to the application you are planning to run. 5. Select the Service. The services the router knows about are listed in the drop down. If the service you want is not listed, add it as described in the next section. 6. Select the Action, for example ALLOW always. 7. For Send to LAN Server, enter the IP address of the local server. Note that this is also the IP address the computers on your LAN will access. 8. For WAN User choose Any, or limit access to particular IP addresses. 9. For Log selection it is reasonable to turn logs on, especially at the beginning when you are unsure of the result of the changes you are making. Later, you may want to set logs to "Never" for performance reasons. 10. Click Apply. As noted in user manual for some models: * Consider using the Dynamic DNS feature on the Advanced menu, so that external users can find your network when the DHCP lease is renewed by your ISP. * If your own LAN server uses DHCP, and your IPs change on rebooting, consider using the Reserved IP Address feature in the LAN IP menu. To Add a Service for These Routers 1. Click Security > Services > Add Custom Service. 2. Enter any name you choose for the service. 3. Select whether the service is to use TCP or UDP. If you are unsure, select both. 4. Enter the lowest port number used by the service. 5. Enter the highest port number used. If the service uses only one port number, enter the same number. 6. Click Apply. There is no "Security - Rules" submenu in the Netgear page, so I have been trying to access "Security - Firewall Rules". I can access everthing else in the Netgear settings as Admin but I cannot get the "Firewall Rules" section to open up. (I am not 100% sure I will know exactly what to do if and when I do get it opened up!) I haven't managed to find though searching the internet any instructions that would seem to apply specifically to what I am trying to achieve, so would be very grateful if someone could either point me in the right direction or give me some advice directly.   Hey people, What's the best method to take an exact copy of my external hard disk? A guru suggested rsync, but I was wondering if there's an easier alternative. I do remember reading somewhere that Acronis also does this. Was looking for your advice on the best option. I'm running Windows. Essentially i have an external HDD which has a lot of stuff synchronized across various pcs. • Better languages than SQL for stored procedures

  I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the limitations and verbosity required to actually commit some business logic to stored procedures, using languages such as Transact-SQL or PL/SQL. I would love to convert some current databases to Oracle and take advantage of its support for Java stored procedures, but that option is not available at the moment. What alternatives would you recommend in the way of databases that support stored procedures in other languages?

• Ho do you view all your monitoring software

  In my office I have all our monitoring tools setup and working great, but I dont have an easy way to view them. I have a large TV in my office plugged into an old PC that has my nagios status page always showing. If I need to change anything on that computer I use Synergy to access the computer from my desktop. We are thinking about adding another TV and I want some suggestions on setting it all up. We are a 99.99% Windows shop. What do you use to run all the TV's in your helpdesk? Synergy works for me, but what if one of the other admins want to change the screen? Is there any easy way that any of us (currently 4 people) can change the screen from our desktops? (Remote desktop doesn't work because it locks the console which is the output to the TVs.) Any advice would help, Thanks.

• unwanted password prompt pops up on web server?

  my web server randomly asks for a password as though basic authentication is turned on. It's an IIS 7 web server and you have to specifically install basic authentication in the roles section. It isn't installed. The message that pops up is "Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)" I cannot reproduce the problem but a number of customers have reported the problem and it only seems to appear to a small number of customers. It pops up when they visit the homepage, nothing is generated by the IIS logs to indicate a password box is being served (e.g. no 401 errors etc) Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks

• Windows Vista stuck on crcdisk.sys

  Hello everyone, I'm here with some Vista-trouble. After a cigarette-break I returned to my desk to find my PC with a black screen, and after failing to wake it up did a forced restart. I haven't been installing any hardware or software for quite a while. Ever since, Vista gets stuck on the animated 'Microsoft Corporation' progress bar with the animation still running and no hard disk activity. With an F8 and safe-mode + prompt I saw that the boot gets stuck at crcdisk.sys. I'm running Vista64 SP1. What could the problem be? Any advice?

• Replacing a W2K3 Domain Controller - what do I need to know?

  I have a network of around 70 machines, currently with two DCs both running Windows Server 2003 (DC0 & DC1). DC0 is a five year old Poweredge 1850 and has recently become increasingly flakey, and in the past fortnight has fallen over twice. I want to replace this machine, but I'm cautious as there is huge scope for this sort of thing to go wrong. The way I imagine doing this is building a new machine then doing a DCPROMO and running three domain controllers for a month or so until I'm happy that everything is working as it should be before retiring the old machine. Particular areas of concern are the replication of roles from the current controllers (GP settings for instance) and the ramifications of switching off the machine that has, up until now, been the 'primary'. If there are compelling reasons to use Server 2008 I'm willing to do so, however I don't know if this would cause problems with my exisiting 2003 machines. Any advice on best practice or previous experiences would be most welcome.

• Postfix smtp error 450 (failed to add recipient)

  I have debian server with postfix and roundcube. After an attack we are on 2 blacklists, but I don't think that this is the main problem. I can't send mail to any address. I tried to find the cause...I checked var/spool/postfix/etc/resolv.conf and resolv.etc and they're the same with this content: nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver localhost In var/log/mail.err I found: cyrus/imap[25452]: DBERROR: opening /var/lib/cyrus/user/m/[email protected]: cyrusdb error cyrus/imap[25452]: DBERROR: skiplist recovery /var/lib/cyrus/user/m/[email protected]: ADD at 1FC0 exists When I try to send email from roundcube, I get the message from title. When I send it within opera or any other mail client, It gives nothing, but email is'nt sended. Thank you for any advice.

  Hi, What are the main guidelines to setting up a user account on a Linux machine for a web app? In my case it is a Rails application that does file management. First thing I can think of is to limit access rights to only the directories it needs. But how exactly should I go about this? Setup rights through a user group or a through the user's ownership of those directories. I have very little experience in user rights management. What else do I need to consider? I've heard of ACL's and SELinux, do I need to look into any of these to guaranty decent security for my simple web app? Any advice about this and anything not mentioned welcomed, Thanks, Max. • Networking not working in Windows 7 - "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services"

  I have a homebuilt computer with a GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard with a Realtek RTL8111E LAN chip. Ethernet was working fine in Windows 7 until I reinstalled this OS, but now it's stopped, while still working in other OSes. I've tried reinstalling drivers from both the Gigabyte and Realtek sites to no avail; I've also plugged in and installed an Asus USB-N13 wifi dongle and this doesn't work oddly. How can I diagnose and fix this issue? In 'Network and Sharing Center' says "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process" under the heading 'Unknown'. Following the advice at http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/130159-dependency-service-group-failed-start.html#post1122627 I've gone to 'Control Panel= Admin Tools= Services' and ensured the services listed at that URL are started (one - IIRC 'Come+ Event System' refused to start as user 'Local services' so I've had to set it to log on with the 'Local system account'... I suspect this may be part of the problem).

• X11Forwarding on MacOSX (Leopard/Snow Leopard)

  Hi, I have some remote boxes, which are a bunch of Mac Mini's. I access them now through SSH, and it fits my needs to do the maintenance. In the past, I used X11Forwarding with Linux boxes, when I was still using Debian myself, and I was able to run a specific application as if it was natively present (Firefox). I haven't succeeded to do this yet, but I assume because of the BSD underneath the fancy Apple GUI should be able to do such a task similar. I am aware of the remote administration, but I rather keep access limited to SSH on these boxes for inbound connections. Background information about the why's, tips, advice and comments are all helpful! Thanks!

• Using IIS7 as a reverse proxy

  Hi All, My question is pretty much identical to the question listed but they did not get an answer as they ended up using Linux as the reverse proxy. http://serverfault.com/questions/55309/using-iis7-as-a-reverse-proxy I need to have IIS the main site and linux (Apache) being the proxied site(s). so I have site1.com (IIS7) site2.com (Linux Apache) they have subdomains of sub1.site1.com sub2.site1.com sub3.site2.com I want all traffic to go to site1.com and to say anything that is site2.com should be proxied to linux box on internal network, (believe ARR can do this but not sure how). I can not have it running as Apache doing the proxying as I need IIS exposed directly. any and all advice would be great. Thanks
