• Can’t connect to SQL Server 2008 - looks like Shared Memory problem

  I am unable to connect to my local instance of SQL Server 2008 Express using SQL Server Management Studio. I believe the problem is related to a change I made to the connection protocols. Before the error occurred, I had Shared Memory enabled and Named Pipes and TCP/IP disabled. I then enabled both Named Pipes and TCP/IP, and this is when I started experiencing the problem. When I try to connect to the server with SSMS (with either my SQL server sysadmin login or with windows authentication), I get the following error message: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233) Why is it returning a Named Pipes error? Why would it not just use Shared Memory, as this has a higher priority order in the list of connection protocols? It seems like it is not listening on Shared Memory for some reason? When I set Named Pipes to enabled and try to connect, I get the same error message. My windows account is does not have administrator priviliges on my computer - perhaps this is making a difference in some way (as some of the discussions in this post about an "SuperSocketNetLib\Lpc" registry key seems to suggest). I have tried restarting the SQL Server service, by the way, and also tried to get someone to log onto the machine with an admin account to restart the SQL Server service. Still no luck.

• Windows Server (SBS) 2008 - Telephony service won't start (missing permissions)

  I am running a SBS 2008 server. It's setup as the domain controller for the network. After a reboot, the Telephony service (and all services that depend on it) refuses to start under the Network Service account. The error given is: Error 1297: A privilege that the service requires to function properly does not exist in the service account configuration. You may use the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in (services.msc) and the Local Security Settings MMC snap-in (secpol.msc) to view the service configuration and the account configuration. This has caused all the network services not to be accessible e.g. terminal services, VPN (RRAS), SQL Server instances. The SSH daemon I have running on the box will accept connections only from localhost, but won't respond on the network. After searching around, the only advice I could find was to grant the Network Service account these permissions: Adjust memory quotas for a process Replace a process level token I set those permissions on both the Default Domain Policy and the Default Domain Controller Policy, but it seemingly had no effect. Most of the services will start if I change them to run under the Local System account, but that didn't make them accessible on the network. I even tried removing the Routing and Remote Access Services feature, rebooting and reinstalling it, but the issue remains. Any ideas?

It basically says : Starting with Windows Server 2003, the ability to replicate discrete changes to linked multivalued properties was introduced as a technology called Linked Value Replication (LVR). and This allows the number of group memberships to exceed the former recommended limit of 5,000 for Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 at a forest functional level of Windows 2000. • 0x0000007b WinXP in VirtualBox with no Admin access on source drive

  I have a physical drive with an installation of WinXP-32 which I have made a clone of using SysInternals disk2vhd. I have no admin rights on this installation. I have tried to boot this VHD in VirtualBox, however it blue screens on 0x0000007b. I have researched this and apparently the cause is that Windows doesn't like the IDE controller changing. I have tried all the available controllers in VirtualBox, but they all produce the same result. There is a Microsoft KB article which describes a method involving loading a .reg file and extracting some sys files from a CAB. This method apparently works well for many people with this problem, however it will not work for me as I don't have admin rights on the WinXP installation. Is there anything I can do in this case? Is there any way of loading the .reg file outside the OS? or perhaps doing a repair using the WinXP CD? Even though I have no admin rights on the source drive installation of Windows, I do obviously have full access to the file system directly on the drive and also in the VHD itself.

• Windows 7, network connection with no default gateway: any way to change the "Unknown network" statu

  Hi, I have a computer running Windows 7 Pro RTM. This computer has two network connections: A Wi-fi connection to the Internet (through a home router) which works just fine. An OpenVPN virtual network connection. More precisely, this is a virtual Ethernet connection which behaves exactly like a physical Ethernet wired connection. My problem is that the "Network and sharing center" shows "Unknown network" for the OpenVPN connection. After some research I found that logical networks (outside a domain) are identified by the MAC address of the default gateway of the connection. Problem is, the OpenVPN connection has no default gateway: it is a private network, so I don't need one... Consequently, the "Unknown network" is always considered public, so the firewall is always in "public mode", which I don't want. Plus, I can't rename "Unknown connection" or anything (which makes sense), so it is kinda ugly. My goal is to define a proper logical network for the OpenVPN connection with the private profile. I know of some workarounds (disable the firewall, modify security policy to make all unknown networks "private") but they're still workarounds. I just want my clients to connect to the VPN without having to disable their firewall settings, without changing global configuration with potential side-effects (the "security policy" solution) and without having to look at an ugly "Unknown connection" in the Network and sharing center. Is there any way I can do this? I tried to check what was going on in the registry (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList is interesting), but I still didn't find a way to "force" the OpenVPN connection to be assigned to a logical network. • Run Explorer in SYSTEM account on Windows Vista or 7 using Sysinternal’s psexec tool?

  Has anyone been successful at launching an instance of Windows Explorer in the SYSTEM account on Windows Vista or 7? It is possible to do this on XP, but I haven't been able to get it to completely work in Vista or 7. Trying to launch Explorer as SYSTEM into session 1 (my user session) results in Explorer exiting immediately and returning an error code of 1. I can launch Explorer as SYSTEM into session 0 with the following command: psexec -i 0 -s explorer That will create an instance of explorer running as SYSTEM with a taskbar and start menu on the hidden session 0 desktop, but won't let you open a file browser window. If you switch to the hidden session 0 desktop and try to open an Explorer window from there to browse files, the following error message appears: "The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password." I have set the following registry key to 1 for my user account and the SYSTEM account: \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\SeparateProcess There has got to be a way to make this work? If it is not possible, can anyone explain why? -Rob

• Sending Adobe PDF attachments from Adobe Reader (in Outlook 2003) takes too long

  I have a customer who is using Outlook 2003 (Microsoft Online Services) and Adobe reader 9+. When they send a PDF from Adobe reader to Outlook (via the Send as attachment to e-mail feature in Adobe), it freezes for 30 seconds to 5 minutes before the new e-mail pops up with the PDF attachment. I'm pretty sure the issue is on the Outlook side of things, as I've tried Adobe reader 8 and Foxit Reader with the same results (Windows XP/7 doesn't seem to make a difference, either). I tried Outlook in safe mode on the first (Win7) machine I was working on, and the e-mail attachment worked a lot faster, but when I tried to replicate the results on another machine, one wouldn't go into safe mode, the other didn't seem to show a difference. In an effort to fix the problem in Outlook normal mode, I tried disabling all add-ins, Com add-in (Office Communicator is the only one), reading pane, Word 2003 as e-mail editor... but none of these seemed to address the issue. Does anyone have any other ideas? I need to get this resolved as soon as possible, and it doesn't seem practical to make them run in safe mode. :P

  I have the following problem: when starting Visual Studio 2008, it says "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application." and stops. With the help of Sysinternals ProcessMonitor, I found out that Visual Studio could not load the atl90.dll 9.0.30729.4148 from the WinSxS folder. I tried to manually copy the older atl90.dll 9.0.30729.1 with the result that Visual Studio works again. Now I call this a dirty workaround, and not a solution. Plus I still don't know the reason why the atl90.dll disappeared in the first place. So my questions: - Does anyone know of a reason why this might have happened? - Does anyone know a real solution to the problem, e.g. a Microsoft download that includes the atl90.dll in the correct version 9.0.30729.4148 that installs into WinSxS? • Start Menu Shortcuts resisting reorganisation

  Running Win7. The Start Menu was getting too big, so I've navigated to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and created some sub-folders in various categories [image editors, system utilities, media players, security for example] in which to group the shortcuts. Having created the group folders, I've dragged and dropped the Start Menu shortcuts into them. However it seems all Start Menu shortcuts are not alike. Some programs, their shortcut folders having been moved from the Start Menu, spawn NEW [but empty] folders bearing their company names in the top level of the Start Menu eg AVICodec Some programs don't have Start Menu shortcut folders that can be seen in WinExplorer [or equiv] at all, even though they turn up under the Start Menu itself. It seems these can be moved where they are visible i.e. in the Start - All Programs by dragging and dropping not just onto the desired folder but by hovering to expand the desired folder and then dropping between other shortcuts there. Eg Daum, Format Factory That's not such a problem, but why it's happening is a mystery. What's going on, and how to make these shortcuts behave normally or otherwise control them properly?

  Hi , It's 3 days I'm trying to install SqlServer 2005 under Windows 7 64 bit on my computer. First let me tell you what I've done and what I've got till now . 1-I Installed Windows 7 64 Bit on my computer 2-I tried to install SQl Server 2005 "Developer Edition" 2.1 But in "System Configuration Check" Page i recieved 2 warning , One for "IIS Feature Requirement" and another for "ASP.NET Version Registration Rquired" . 2.1.1 . I installed "Internet Information Services" from "Turn Windows features on or off" section in control panel 2.1.2 I Enabled reporting service 32 bit from "Inetpub= AdminScripts = adsutil.vbs" 2.2 At this stage There was no waring in System Configuration Check 3- So I installed SQl Server 2005 Developer Edition By all default settings 4- I installed Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 64 bit Now when when i run "Management Studio" There is no name in "Server name" section . I typed my Computer name Or "." and i got this Error : A network -related instance-specific error occurred while establishinga connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (Provider: Named Pipes Provider , error :40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server ) ( Microsoft SQL Server , Error :2) . I googled some for this Error and some people said follow this instruction: Startsql server 2005Configuration toolsSql Server Surface Configuration AreaSurface Area Configuration for services and Connections But i got this Error : No SQl SErver 2005 Components were found on the specified computer . Either no components are installed , or you are not a administrator on this computer (SQLSAC) I'm really tired because of that , and i don't know what's wrong with this . Some more information : I have no additonal software on my computer , like Antivirus or Proxy I tried all step with "Standard Edition" either , but no difference My user is Administrator I tried more than 5 times all those steps including re-installing Windows 7 .   I'm trying to use WIM2VHD according to the instructions on Scott Hanselman's blog post to create a Sysprepped VHD image to boot from. I've installed the WAIK, and I have my Windows 7 sources mounted as a virtual drive. • RDP problem with Vista and Windows 7 destination

  I use a server a home to host a bunch of concurrently running Hyper-V VM's with different OS's and software for testing. I have Vista on the laptop, all latest SP's and patches. The server is Server 2008 R2, fully patched. The guests are a mix of XP, Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7. If I connect to the Win XP or Server 2008 guest using RDP, it is always good. Very quick, no speed issues. If I connect to the Vista or Win 7 guests, the response time is so slow it is unusable. Usually 6 or 8 seconds, and at times it is to long to measure! This happens from both the laptop running Vista, and the server running Server 2008 R2. Does anyone know what the issue is with RDP on Vista and Windows 7 destinations? I did read this: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/remote-desktop-slow-problem-solved.asp and that is not the problem I have applied that change to all PC's.

Only really ever show a percentage remaining number as pictured. The windows help documentation on the "battery meter" seems to indicate that it should display a time remaining indicator, is this accurate? How accurate is the battery meter? The accuracy of what the battery meter reports—what percentage of a full charge remains and how long you can use your laptop before you must plug it in—depends on several factors. • Windows 7 Apache Crashes on ANY request

  I have XAMPP installed. I am running Windows 7. I have WordPress installed so that I may tweak it and test things locally before putting them 'live' on a remote server. I just installed BuddyPress. The installation was rather seamless. I activated the plugin and almost immediately, Apache crashed. I have Apache running as a service so it immediately restarted itself and was running BUT if I even so much as refresh the page (or create any other request), down it goes. • Data Protection Manager System Protection Backups Failing

  I'm just starting to setup DPM 2010 in a test environment with a Domain Controller and a File Server. Everything seem to be working fairly well and I can get all of my backup jobs to succeed except for the "Computer\System Protection" backups. Both servers are running fully up to date 64 bit Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 1. The error that is being provided is: DPM cannot create a backup because Windows Server Backup (WSB) on the protected computer encountered an error (WSB Event ID: 517, WSB Error Code: 0x8078001D). (ID 30229 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FB) This Microsoft Knowledge Base article describes the issue perfectly and provides a hotfix. I downloaded the hotfix, moved it onto the affected server, attempt to run it and receive the following error: The update is not applicable to your computer. I've verified that I have indeed downloaded the 64 bit version. According to this thread the hotfix got rolled into Service Pack 1, yet I'm still experiencing the issue. Both machines do have the Windows Server Backup feature installed. Can anybody point me in the right direction? What am I missing?

• Logic behind SCCM 2012 required PXE deployments

  I'm in the process of setting up Windows 7 deployment through PXE boot, with Microsoft SCCM 2012. The imaging itself works very well, but I have a question about the logic behind PXE deployments. My setup is the following: My Windows 7 deployment task sequence is deployed to the unknown computers group. (not required, press F12 to start installing) OSDComputerName variable is also set on the unknown computers group, so unknown computers that are being imaged will prompt for a pc name. The computer then becomes known in SCCM and is added to the correct collection(s). But if I want to reïnstall windows on a known computer things are different: I can do a required deployment of the imaging task sequence to the collection of computers. Then windows installs through PXE, without any human interaction, keeping the original computer name. But because the initial deployment was not required, the "required PXE deployment" flag is not set. So as soon as I add a new computer to a collection with a required PXE deployment, it will start to reïnstall windows again. I can also deploy the imaging task sequence to the new unknown computers as required, so the flag gets set initially. But then it does not prompt for a computer name. (and it generates a name like MININT-xxx) Which is also sort of what I want. Because when i want to re-install a machine, I want it to install without interaction. How can I solve this?

• PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:"\php\php_mysql.dll' - The specified module could not be loaded

  I'm trying to upgrade php 5.4.14 from php 5.4.3 in wamp server 2.2e. I have downloaded php-5.4.14-Win32-VC9-x86 (thread safe). Extracted it under C:\wamp\bin\php. Copied wampserver.conf from C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.4.3 to C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.4.14. Renamed php.ini-development to phpForApache.ini. -The port number the wamp server has been changed in the http.conf file to 8087 from its default 80. This is mentioned here though it is about upgrading from php 5.3.5 to php 5.4.0. After this, Restarting of the wamp server and services all over again has all been done and those two versions appeared in the menu php-versions (which is opened when the icon of the server is clicked). But when I attempt to enable a library like php_mysql or php_mysqli, a warning message box appears. PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:"\php\php_mysql.dll' - The specified module could not be loaded. I have also tried to removing the semicolon before them in the php.ini file but to no avail. I'm running Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002, service pack 3. Where might be the problem? EDIT: I have changed extension_dir from C:\php to c:\wamp\bin\php\php5.4.14\ext\ in php.ini as the answer below indicates and the library is now loaded correctly but it says, 1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) though the user name and the password are the same as they are in MySQL in the config.inc.php file under phpmyadmin. I have also tried to restart MySQL56 service from Control Panel-Services(Local) but it keeps giving the same error. Does someone know why this happens?

• Change DPI setting in Windows 8.1 for the Logon Screen

  How can the DPI setting be changed for the Logon Screen in Windows 8.1? Microsoft has added per-user DPI settings. But this means that there is no adjustable DPI setting for the Lock/Logon screen. You can change the DPI setting to be the same across all displays and this does affect the icons and font on the lock/logon screen. However, it does not affect any app/program that can run on the lock/logon screen. Ex. I use a 44" flat screen TV for my monitor on my desktop. Big enough for me to sit in my recliner and use my computer. I use the on-screen keyboard most of the time. (I don't want to keep a keyboard next to me.) The problem is that with the new DPI setup the on-screen keyboard takes up nearly half the screen, which is too big. I tried looking through the registry to see if I could find a setting for it. In the key HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop there is a string value named LogicalDPIOverride with a value of -1. I have a feeling this is where I can fix the issue. I tried changing the value to 0 and to 1 with no change in the result. Instead I noticed that after logging out and back in the -1 value was back in the registry. How can I change this default DPI? Can I use the LogPixels string that worked for DPI in Windows 7? Here are two Screen shots, one of the Lock Screen and one of the Logon Screen:

  Hi, I am setting up biztalk logshipping for Biztalk 2009 database. Following http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa560961.aspx article, I am doing the following to setup biztalk logshipping on destination server: Enable Ad-hoc queries by: sp_configure 'show advanced options',1 go reconfigure go sp_configure 'Ad Hoc Distributed Queries',1 go reconfigure go sp_configure 'show advanced options',0 go reconfigure go Execute LogShipping_Destination_Schema & LogShipping_Destination_Logic in master on destinations server Run: exec bts_ConfigureBizTalkLogShipping @nvcDescription = '', @nvcMgmtDatabaseName = '', @nvcMgmtServerName = '', @SourceServerName = null, -- null indicates that this destination server restores all databases @fLinkServers = 1 -- 1 automatically links the server to the management database When I run this I am receiving the following error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. After some research I found some info : Usually this error means that the SQL Server Service Principal Name (SPN) was not configured, and NTLM was not being used as an authentication mechanism. SQl services are runing under different domain accounts. So, I asked the domain admin to create SPNs for the servers, SQL service accounts for beoth source and destination using name and FQDN. enabled computer name and service accounts for delegation. When I run the following: select * from sys.dm_exec_connections I get the the same error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON' Any help please?

• Domain Environment + Certificate Authority + Server 2008 R2

  I have recently been delegated the task to setup a CA in our domain environment and have a question on why Microsoft does somethings the way they do lol. I have been trying to read up on what the best practices are for going about this task, and have decided that in an ideal CA environment you should have one “offline” Root CA, and then two subordinate CAs for redundancy/issuing the certs. That is all good, I understand how this works and why, but in messing with a sandbox I have setup, the way you go about adding certificate authorities to a domain environment seems extremely trivial and against all of their best practices… Dooes anyone know what the purpose is of an Enterprise Root CA that is integrated into Active Directory? From what I have read, once you setup an Enterprise Root CA that is integrated into Active Directory, it stays with Active Directory for the long haul and must not be turned off/renamed/touched under any circumstances. If this is true, that seems to go against the practice of setting up a standalone root CA, adding the subordinates, and then taking the root offline. Thanks for any feedback you may have to offer!

• No Outbound Internet on Windows Home Server

  Could someone provide some steps for me to check my internet connection on my Windows Home Server? It seems to have intermittent connectivity issues and I am unsure of how to diagnose the problem because it is a headless (no monitor, no keyboard) machine so the only way to get to the device is via remote desktop (which works fine). When connected to the machine, it doesn't pull up any microsoft.com sites and some other sites it does pull up (i.e. gmail.com) and some it doesn't (stackoverflow.com). To make matters more complicated, it has worked intermittently in the past for reasons unknown. Are there tools I can use to properly diagnose the reason for the connection failure? I can ping 127.0.0.1 just fine, I have internet working on my other router-connected machines, so I'm not sure why this one would fail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated and up-voted :) ** edit - thanks for suggestions guys, I'm going to try these tonight and will update my post. ** edit #2 - I hoping this is a more permanant fix, but I have both changed my port on the router as well as restarted the router at the same time. The internet (for the moment) appears to be working. I will be sure to try everything we have discussed should this problem persist. Thanks, Kyle

• How to setup Calendar permissions for group to group

  I've been scouring the internet and so far have only been able to find examples of how to grant calendar permissions from one user to another using the Add-MailboxFolderPermission command. This is great and it was okay for when they only had a handful of users. But going forward it's not realistic to have to set individual calendar permissions for all calendars for each new user. Layout of security groups already created. Each group has a few people assigned to it. Techs Managers Admin What I am trying to accomplish is set it up so that anyone that belongs to the Managers group can view the calendars of the Tech group. Admins can view and edit the Tech group. I've found an example of adding just the security group name but I get an error of: [PS] C:\Windows\system32add-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity Techs:\Calendar -User "Admin" -AccessRights Owner The user "Admin" is either not valid SMTP address, or there is no matching information. + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (0:Int32) [Add-MailboxFolderPermission], InvalidExternalUserIdException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 39352699,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.StoreTasks.AddMailboxFolderPermission Am I creating groups wrong? • Windows Server 2008 Remote Desktop printing blank pages

  I have a Windows Server 2008 (not R2) machine which has problems with redirected printing. Clients connecting via Remote Desktop have their printers redirected and appearing for them to print to, but printing from applications on the server to local printers is giving blank pages, missing pages, or pages with headers/footers but no middle section. The issues are consistant for similar prints, but sometimes other prints and/or applications will work correctly. I have installed PDFCreator locally on the server, and the same print jobs sent by the same application appear correctly in the PDFs. Printing that PDF via the redirected printer prints correctly. I have tried the following: Installing drivers. I’ve installed several drivers different drivers, for both the client and server operating system and architecture, on the client and the server. Reinstalling the printers. I’ve tried reinstalling on remote print servers, the clients, and the host server, and tried different client machines. Granting everyone full permissions on the print spool folder on the server. Editing the registry to forward non-USB ports (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302361) None of these have made any difference. The clients are using Windows 7 or Windows XP and none of them have any issues with printing locally. Any ideas? Thanks!
