  I have a day job as an IT system administrator, but I do a lot of c# asp.net programming on my spare time. I have always wondered what its like to be a real software developer. I have taken a look at big CMS systems like umbraco and Dotnetnuke and said to myself that these developers must have decades of programming experience. Just the design of these products are overwhelming let alone the actual code. I just would like your comments on what it is like being a programmer.

  Background: On a new project I've found myself 3 levels removed from my actual source of information. I report to my PM, who reports to our contractor, who reports to the actual client. Getting answers to questions has become something of a problem and I'm curious to know what people recommend. Needs: I'm trying to find a technology or disciplined strategy that will assist me in ensuring that the questions I'm asking are getting answered: Correctly without much modification of the original question Quickly so the original context isn't lost Completely so that if a question is deferred I don't forget about it. • Can Visual Studio Express run from USB drive?

  Using an arbitrary Windows machine (2000/XP or later), I can install Eclipse CDT to a USB drive move that USB drive onto a different Windows machine--one that does not have any form of Eclipse software already installed, and potentially a different version of Windows (but 2000/XP or later) use Eclipse to develop application-level C/C++ programs on that second machine (and that includes using the debugger), running directly from the USB drive without copying anything to C:. I can do all this without having Administrator privileges on either machine. I can do the same with NetBeans, and with several other IDEs that support C/C++ development. Is it possible to do this with any version of Visual Studio Express? If not, can you explain the technical reason(s) this doesn't work?

• FTP .NET Sockets

  Hi Everyone, I have an FTP auto downloader program. It downloads new files from a given FTP folder. The application was successful for some FTP folders that i have tested. These folders contain 30 - 50 files. However, when i tried an FTP folder with 150 and 18000 files, i receive this error message: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. My first assumptions will be because of firewalls or anti virus. I don't have administrative access to this computer so I would like to ask if there are other reasons for this before i raise this to our systems dept? Need anyone's help asap. Thanks :)

My motivation for this question is that I have a friend's exported XML file with the garbled text which I want to turn into corrected Hebrew text file. The XML export was originally garbled by MySQL import and exports, but I don't have the information needed to fix it or traceback the problem. Thanks.

• Persistent SQL Table lock from C#

  I'm trying to create a persistent SQL (SQL Server 2005) lock on a table level. I'm not updating/querying the specified table, but I need to prevent a third party application from updating the locked table as a means to prevent transactions from being posted (the table I wish to lock is the key on their transaction that interferes with my processing). From my experience the table is only locked for the time a specific transaction is taking place. Any ideas? The 3rd party developer has logged this feature as an enhancement, but since they are in the middle of rolling out a major release I can expect to wait at least 6 months for this. I know that this isn't a great solution, since their software will fall over but it is of a critical enough nature that we're willing to live with the consequences.

  I want to be able to get a list of issues given a: Project Name and Release Version this seems like a basic JIRA soap API 101 request It seems, looking at the documentation: http://docs.atlassian.com/software/jira/docs/api/rpc-jira-plugin/latest/index.html?com/atlassian/jira/rpc/soap/JiraSoapService.html you can get issues by: Filter SearchTerms SearchTerms and Project but not the above. Is this a complete oversight or i am missing something i would expect to see something like this: RemoteIssue[] issues = _soapService.getIssues(string project_, string version_) any help? UPDATE: I see that JIRA 4.0 is out but i can't find any documentation if the API has changed to support this request above. Can anyone find this link to answer that questions.

  What term should I use to describe situations (or bugs in software) caused by read, write, send, recv doing less work than expected? For example, write(fd, "123456", 6); may return 3 and we need to write "456" to finish our work. I expect any good program should do all their reads and writes in a loop until without relying that write will write everything. Am I right? /* Implemented simple FUSE filesystem which only allows reading and writing with small buffers, very often returning that it is written less bytes that in a buffer. Some programs work, some not. Are them buggy? */

  I ran the following command at linux bash: apt-cache search hex.*(view|edit) My intention was to find any software packages whose name/description contains the pattern 'hex.*(view|edit)'. But among the results I got this: kipi-plugins - image manipulation/handling plugins for KIPI aware programs How could this be in the results list? I didn't see any matching string in this result. Is this a bug of the apt-cache search command? Or do I mis-understand how the regex is used by this command? Many thanks.

• How to create a 2D map of room by a few images/movie frames ?

  I'd like to create a simple 2D map of a room by getting pictures (ceiling) of all directions (360° - e.g. movie frames), recognize the walls by edge detection, delete other unwanted objects, concat the images at the right position (cf. walls, panorama) and finally create the approximate 2D map (looking on it from above). Getting the scale would be another parameter, which might be useful. I have some own ideas at the moment, by using e.g. the Sobel algorithm, but it would be interesting if somebody out there knows some project or software (GPL,freeware prefered) doing this already, as I'm still looking for some examples, which might help me.   Is there any way to secure your assembly down to the class/property & class/method level to prevent the using/calling of them from another assembly that isn't signed by our company? I would like to do this without any requirements on strong naming (like using StrongNameIdentityPermission) and stick with how an assembly is signed. I really do not want to resort to using the InternalsVisibleTo attribute as that is not maintainable in a ever changing software ecosystem. For example: Scenario One Foo.dll is signed by my company and Bar.dll is not signed at all. Foo has Class A Bar has Class B Class A has public method GetSomething() Class B tries to call Foo.A.GetSomething() and is rejected Rejected can be an exception or being ignored in someway Scenario Two Foo.dll is signed by my company and Moo.dll is also signed by my company. • Sending a large file over network continuously

  Hello, We need to write software that would continuously (i.e. new data is sent as it becomes available) send very large files (several Tb) to several destinations simultaneously. Some destinations have a dedicated fiber connection to the source, while some do not. Several questions arise: We plan to use TCP sockets for this task. What failover procedure would you recommend in order to handle network outages and dropped connections? What should happen upon upload completion: should the server close the socket? If so, then is it a good design decision to have another daemon provide file checksums on another port? Could you recommend a method to handle corrupted files, aside from downloading them again? Perhaps I could break them into 10Mb chunks and calculate checksums for each chunk separately? Thanks.

• Help, I need to debug my BrowserHelperObject (BHO) (in C++) after a internet explorer 8 crash in Rel

  Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

  How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence the second part of my question, which is really the most important part: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using? • How should I set up these tables for searching?

  My PHP site is an online store with about 5k products. Products belong to a vendor, a category, and possibly a subcategory. Each of those items has a name and the products have descriptions. The search queries we've set up work wonderfully, but tend to run pretty slow. They range between 0.20s and 30s (yes 30 seconds). We've optimized like crazy and I'm starting to think we're out of room to improve on that front, so we're caching them and that's making life a lot easier. But when they run they are still killing the server, because what appears to be all of the table locking that comes with MyISAM. So on to my question: Is there a way for us to use InnoDB (row-level locking) and still maintain FULLTEXT? Should we move our DB offsite and use a service like DB2? Is there some other search engine type software we should use instead? Any help is greatly appreciated :)

• TFS for version maintainance

  I am part of a team that releases versions of our software 4-5 times each year to our customers. We maintain the previous 2-3 versions of our product by correcting any errors that we come across in later versions. We are using TFS 2008 for source control and are trying to find the best way of maintaining the older versions. We currently create a branch of our application each time we do a new version, but we are looking for a good way to update old versions more easily. For example, we complete 9.5 but two weeks after we created the branch and are working on 10.0, we realize that 9.5 has an error. We currently make the change in version 10.0 and then open 9.5 to make the change again. Is there anyway of automating this? Thanks!

There is some general good advice to make paper contracts before starting new jobs. When I started my work as a freelancer I hadn't got any clue how such contract should looks like. Now I have some ideas but I believe many of freelancers gathered on SO can add some interesting advices for less-experienced colleagues (like me). So the question is: what clauses freelancers should put on agreements with their clients to make their projects less stressful and better secured. What are your experiences here?   Hi all, i am writing a software that i have to drill down on content a lot. For example when the program starts a listview is displayed. When user clicks on an item, then a second listview must be displayed. For example: Select Continent Select Country Select State Select City Select Address What is the best way to do this (less memory, faster, easier to code etc)? To create multiple listviews with multiple adapters? Or 1 listview with multiple Adapters? Lists are loaded from an external XML File. So far i am creating a new adapter and setting it to the listview. How do i create a second listview and after clicking on 1st listview displaying the second one, with animation. Any examples? • Fitting place names into map shapes

  I'm drawing shapes using GDI+ using a list of lat/lon floats, and I need to place the name of the place within the borders of the polygon. Simply centering the text in the bounding rectangle doesn't work for irregular shapes. I have the text and the font so I can get the size of the rectangle that the text will need to fit in, but at that point I'm stuck. This seems like a common problem that all mapping software solves, as well as the kind of thing you would find in an algorithm or computer graphics textbook. So, given a list of floats for a polygon and a rectangle, is there a way to get the best possible point to place the text, using: 1) GDI+; 2) SQL Server Geospatial; or 3) c# code (or c, pseudocode, etc)

• How to add the UAC shield icon to program that still must target XP?

  I have a program that still must target Windows XP (_WIN32_WINNT 0x501), as most of our customers still use XP. However, we have been shipping Vista for a while, and are now pushing Windows 7 upgrades. For the software to work correctly on the newer OSs, there are a couple operations that require UAC elevation. I have the elevation code working, but would like to have the UAC icon present on the buttons that launch the UAC process. Unfortunately, all of the options defined in Microsoft's UAC UI document require _WIN32_WINNT 0x600 or newer. Is there any way to get the appropriate UAC icon (Vista and 7 use different ones) to show on the button while still being able to target XP (where no icon will be shown)? I'm using C++, but may be able to adapt a .NET solution.

• Why doesn't a 32bit .deb package install on 64bit Ubuntu?

  My .deb package, built on 32-bit Ubuntu and containing executables compiled with gcc, won't install on the 64-bit version of the OS (the error message says 'Wrong architecture i386'). This is confusing to me because I thought that in general 32-bit software worked on 64-bit hardware, but not vice-versa. Will it be possible for me to produce a .deb file that I can install on a 64-bit OS, using my 32-bit machine? Is it just a matter of using the appropriate compiler flags to produce the executables (and if so what are they), or is the .deb file itself somehow specific to one processor architecture?

• What workflow should I use for JavaScript editing?

  Warning: I have very little JavsScript experience. In my past programming experience, I usually have a standalone interpreter/compiler, a text editor and a command line to compile/run my software or my tests (I love test driven development). I really like it this way, since I have the feeling of being in complete control over the tools. However, editing JavaScript I need to put statements in a text file , open my web browser and click on reload. I don't feel comfortable with it, as I cannot really see what is going on (besides some alert boxes). Can you suggest me (I'm on a Mac) another workflow? Perhaps with a debugger? Is there a standalone JavaScript interpreter?

• Most reliable method for uploading files in PHP w/ progress bar

  Hello everyone, I am interested in finding the most reliable method for uploading files in PHP. I need a progress bar with the upload. I have tried SWFUpload but it randomly issues an I/O Error. Even if the same file is uploaded sometimes there is an error and sometimes there is not. I have configured all the necessary INI/Mysql/Apache directives to accept large file uploads. So, I am looking for alternatives as a Flash based solution has not worked. Would Java be more relirable? I have also looked into PHP with APC. I definitely cannot afford these random errors, so any help on reliable software / suggestions on how to minimize them would be appreciated. Thank you.

• Alternative way to notify the user of an error

  I have a winform software that communicates with hardware through a protocol. Sometimes error in communication happens and i would like to notify the user. Errors could be for example: timeouts, crc errors, physical disconnection etc... I have a communication window in which i show these errors, but by default this is hidden. The user can open it though the menubar. Popups are annoying to the user (and to myself) so i would like a un-invasive way to notify the user that an error has occurred. Perhaps a info bubble like when XP tells you updates are ready for your computer? I know that NotifyIcon can help put things in the system tray, which i do not wish to have. I'd rather keep it within my MDI. I'm open to other creative ideas as well.
