Conceptual data modeling: Is RDF the right tool? Other solutions?

I'm planning a system that combines various data sources and lets users do simple queries on these. A part of the system needs to act as an abstraction layer that knows all connected data sources: the user shouldn't [need to] know about the underlying data "providers". A data provider could be anything: a relational DBMS, a bug tracking system, ..., a weather station. They are hooked up to the query system through a common API that defines how to "offer" data. The type of queries a certain data provider understands is given by its "offer" (e.g. I know these entities, I can give you aggregates of type X for relationship Y, ...). My concern right now is the unification of the data: the various data providers need to agree on a common vocabulary (e.g. the name of the entity "customer" could vary across different systems). Thus, defining a high level representation of the entities and their relationships is required. So far I have the following requirements: I need to be able to define objects and their properties/attributes. Further, arbitrary relations between these objects need to be represented: a verb that defines the nature of the relation (e.g. "knows"), the multiplicity (e.g. 1:n) and the direction/navigability of the relation. It occurs to me that RDF is a viable option, but is it "the right tool" for this job? What other solutions/frameworks do exist for semantic data modeling that have a machine readable representation and why are they better suited for this task? I'm grateful for every opinion and pointer to helpful resources.

Usage of CRTP in a call chain

[C#] How do I make hierarchy of objects from two alternating classes?

Here's the scenario: I have two classes ("Page" and "Field"), that are descended from a common class ("Pield"). They represent tags in an XML file and are in the following hierarchy: <page> <field> <page> ... </page> ... </field> ... </page> I.e.: Page and Field objects are in a hierarchy of alternating type (there may be more than one Page or Field to each rung of the hierarchy). Every Field and Page object has a parent property, which points to the respective parent object of the other type. This is not a problem unless the parent-child mechanism is controlled by the base class (Pield), which is shared by the two descended classes (Page and Field). Here is one try, that fails at the line "Pield child = new Pield(pchild, this);": class Pield<T> { private T _pield_parent; ... private void get_children() { ... Mystery: How does Google do cross-domain iframe communication?

Hi everyone, When you host Googles web search element on a page, a div is created which incorporates an iframe which points to a Google adsense ads page. However, if there are no ads for the specific query, Google somehow changes the class on YOUR domain to render the div (and iframe) invisible. They are NOT using postMessage, as it also works in IE7. They are also not using the fragment identifier method, as no hash appears in the url. So how do they do it? Hi all. Problem: I am using Java Tutorials™ sourcecode for this. This is the source code. I tried this: --following with another section of sorted words-- words.add("count"); words.add("cvs"); words.add("dce"); words.add("depth"); --following with another section of sorted words-- and it works perfectly. However when I use this: --just a section of sorted words-- words.add("count"); words.add("cvs"); words.add("dce_iface"); words.add("dce_opnum"); words.add("dce_stub_data"); words.add("depth"); --following with another section of sorted words-- It does show dce_iface when I type dce, but when I type _ then following with o or s it shows me something else like dce_offset where the offset comes from words.add("fragoffset"); somewhere in the list. What can I do to solve this problem? Thank you in advance.

fgets throwing unhandled exception while parsing stl

I am new to c++, I am trying to parse a stl file which is of about 64MB and has about ~18K lines in it. The code works fine for first few 100 lines but then fgets throws following exception: "Unhandled exception at 0x77B0BAC5 (ntdll.dll) in STLparser.exe: 0xC0000024: There is a mismatch between the type of object required by the requested operation and the type of object that is specified in the request." I have checked manually the line for which fgets throws exception, there is nothing out of ordinary there. I am out of options for now. MySQLi Wrapper -- will this slow down performance?

I found the following code on php.net. I'm trying to write a wrapper for the MySQLi library to make things incredibly simple. If this is going to slow down performance, I'll skip it and find another way, if this works, then I'll do that. I have a single query function, if someone passes in more than one variable, I assume the function has to be prepared. The function that I would use to pass in an array to mysqli_stmt_bind_param is call_user_func_array, I have a feeling that is going to slow things down. I've got a silverlight 2 app with a Datagrid and a button for exporting it to Excel by making a trip back to the server. I can create an HTML string representing the datagrid. I'd like to attach this string to an html element, setting MIME type=application/vnd.ms-excel and have a prompt show up asking if I'd like to open or save the xls file. WordPress > Cannot get custom meta settings to change once set...

The script below adds a custom meta box to the WordPress page editor interface. It lists two specific categories, "noindex" and "nofollow", which my custom theme automatically installs when the theme is activated. It works fine for selecting and assigning the categories to the page. However, if the user unchecks either of them, the settings do not stick. deployd authentification using jquery ajax

I have installed deployd in my debian 7.0.0 64 bit, I have also succesfully installed mongodb in it, I have create some collection and user collection in deployd dashboard, then using user guide how to connect and query the table in deployd, I choose jquery ajax to log in to deployd from my localhost site and after login success I try to get/post some data, but somehow deployd return access denied. my div tag is not aligning properly after jquery.html replacement

However, when I use .html in jquery to change or add text to sched_text it throws the css off and places the div tag not as a block anymore but placed somewhere to the side. Does something change when you use .html text? what would the proper way of doing it? Thanks Ok the issue is that my .html or .text is not a string. I just did .text(the_Week[i][1]); which results in a number. How do I present it as a string?

Context: ASP.NET MVC 2.0, C#, SQL Server 2007, IIS7 I have 'scheduledMeetings' table in the database. There is a one-to-many relationship: scheduledMeeting - meetingRegistration So that you could have 10 people registered for a meeting. meetingRegistration has fields Name, and Gender (for example). I have a "calendar view" on my site that shows all coming events, as well as gender count for each event. At the moment I use Linq to Sql to pull the data: var meetings = db.Meetings.Select( m => new { MeetingId = m.Id, Girls = m.Registrations.Count(r => r.Gender == 0), Boys = m.Registrations.Count(r=>r.Gender == 1) }); (actual query is half-a-page long) Because there is anonymous type use going on I cant extract it into a method (since I have several different flavors of calendar view, with different information on each, and I dont want to create new class for each). Any suggestions on how to improve this? Is database view is the answer? Or should I go ahead and create named-type? Any feedback/suggestions are welcome. My DataLayer is huge, I want to trim it, just dont know how. Pointers to a good reading would be good too.

This is usually something conceptually shaky enough that I would not even attempt it, but I don't see myself having much of a choice this time. What I need to do then is to escape the HTML id to make sure it won't allow for XSS or breaking HTML. Here's the code: var user_id = escape(id) var txt = '<div class="chut">'+ '<div class="log" id="chut_'+user_id+'"></div>'+ '<textarea id="chut_'+user_id+'_msg"></textarea>'+ '<label for="chut_'+user_id+'_to">To:</label>'+ '<input type="text" id="chut_'+user_id+'_to" value='+user_id+' readonly="readonly" />'+ '<input type="submit" id="chut_'+user_id+'_send" value="Message"/>'+ '</div>'; What would be the best way to escape id to avoid any kind of problem mentioned above? As you can see, right now I'm using the built-in escape() function, but I'm not sure of how good this is supposed to be compared to other alternatives. I'm mostly used to sanitizing input before it goes in a text node, not an id itself.

jquery to toggle a label

How can I get the label to toggle show/hide? Below is my code and currently it is also displaying show.
