• ASP.NET Session expires in no time?

  Weired problem! ASP.NET Session expires instantly. In my web.config I have this session settings: <sessionState mode="InProc" timeout="10000" /> AFAIK the timeout attribute's value is in minutes and can't be greater than 525,600 minutes (1 year). I don't understand what I am doing wrong here. Why is the session expiring. Is it a server memory issue? I don't think so, the server is pretty descent and it has only one site which isn't doing much after all. Ideas? EDIT: After setting the cookiless attribute to true, and while noticing the session id on the url, I can see that the session id CHANGING. I assume that this means the session is expiring. The IIS Settings are correct AFAIK (the enable session state checkbox is checked, and the value of the time is 20). A Picture is worth 100 words:

• WCF with No security

  Hi all, I've got a WCF service setup which I can consume and use as intendid... but only on the same machine. I'm looking to get this working over multiple computers and I'm not fussed about the security. However when I set (client side) the security to = none, I get a InvalidOperationException: The service certificate is not provided for target 'http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8731/Design_Time_Addresses/WcfServiceLibrary/ManagementService/'. Specify a service certificate in ClientCredentials. So I'm left with: <security mode="Message"> <message clientCredentialType="None" negotiateServiceCredential="false" algorithmSuite="Default" /> </security> But this gives me another InvalidOperationException: The service certificate is not provided for target 'http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8731/Design_Time_Addresses/WcfServiceLibrary/ManagementService/'. • iPhone application-Memory handling issues

  Hi All, I am having some memory management issues in my app. Maybe someone may help me out here. 1) While checking for leaks in intruments, when I deploy and run the app on device, the virtual memory utilized, starts from 50 MB(even though i've just launched the app and am on the first screen). My resources contribute to 2.6 MB of it and I don't know what is contributing for the rest. What is the ideal utilization of virtual memory for an app? 2) In certain screen of the app, user is allowed to click a picture from the camera. In Instruments, I observe that virtual memory utilization jumps around 20MB, on the invocation of camera. Is it normal and can it be decreased? Looking forward to hear a reply soon. • How to Debug XAML Parsing Errors in Silverlight?

  I run into the following issue semi-regularly: I make changes to XAML or some resources used by it and when I go to load up the Silverlight project in debug mode it only gets as far as the spinning Silverlight-loading animation. I've tried attaching the VS08 debugger to the process but it doesn't do anything at this point (works fine once I'm in the Silverlight but not before.) From previous experience I've noticed this happens when there're problems with the XAML or the resources in it but my only solution so far has been to dissect the code line-by-line until I spot the problem. Is there an easy way to debug/diagnose these situations? UPDATE I found this question with some help, but it still doesn't provide a good way to debug these types of issues.

• Visual Studio ignore try catch - debug only

  I think error handling is a good idea. :) When debugging it can get in the way - especially with nice user friendly messages. In VB6 I could just check a box for the compiler to ignore my error handling. I found the dialog that allows me to do something similar in VS, but it's about 10,000 check boxes instead of one - which is too many to change every time I want a production compilation. Is there a way to set VS up so when I am in debugging mode I get one set of conditions and when I am in production I get another? ...or is there just another method to handling errors and debugging more efficiently?   Is it possible to get the target element in a keypress event handler in a design mode iframe ? I know it can be done in the mousedown event handler (by accessing event.target), but in the keypress / keydown handlers event.target is always the iframe element. For example, with the following html, if the user types into the div where it says * key press here *, I would like in the keypress / keydown event handler to be able to determine that the target element is the div with id='b'. • Invalid padding on ASP 2.0 cookie, MVC looks ok

  We have a cookie management library that writes a cookie containing some sensitive information, encrypted with Rijndael. The cookie encrypts and decrypts fine in unit tests (using Moq), works fine for MVC web applications, but when called from an ASP.net 2.0 website, the cookie cannot be decrypted. "Padding is invalid and cannot be removed." We are sure that the cookie value is valid because we tested it 10,000 times with random data in a unit test. There is something about what ASP.NET 2.0 does when it reads and writes the cookie that causes trouble. There has to be a gotcha. Any suggestions?

  Almost every article I read told me that you can't have chdir in Java. The accepted answer to this question says you can't do it in Java. • Best package for basic web-based file manager

  I'm looking for a basic web-based file management application. It must have an affordable price, and fairly easy installation would be a plus. ASP.Net / IIS based would be easiest for me to work with. Basically, I'd like it to create a secure web site where myself and a few people can exchange various types of files, etc. I'm looking for a package I can install on my own server rather than a web-based service, as I think I can get more space at a good price point this way. I could go custom coding, but I figure this is such a generic need, there must be something already mature out there at a decent price. What has worked best for you?

• Interface Photoshop size for iPhone app

  Hello, I am building an iPhone app interface and I know the dpi has to be 163, but when it comes to the size of the file, I was looking through all the recommendations and found 2 different answers... Does anyone know what size should i set the Photoshop file at? The answers I have so far are: "The screen on the iPhone is 480×320, minus the 20-pixel status bar (making a 460×320 working screen size). The screen shots on the App Store should not include the status bar." "400 x 320 or 960 x 640 (iPhone 4) You must also consider the landscape mode (320 x 400 and 640 x 960)" I would really appreciate the answer. Thanks!

• Opera IME support

  Hi, i am currently trying to get Input Mode Editor (IME) support working with a designMode enabled IFrame. The problem here is with Opera it seems I don't get any useful notifications from the IME. It seems I get a single keydown with a keycode of 197 if the first time the IME is used - and nothing else ever again (No keycode 229 messages, no textinput event). With all other browsers keydown events with an keycode of 229 seem to be common if there is something happening in the scope of the IME. And with some goodwill and combination of keyup with keycode 13 and textinput events it seems to be possible to detect the moment the sequence is done. Thanks

After the install I want to change the default settings in the Ssms, such as "Prevent saving changes that require table recreation" and such on. I can't figure out, where Ssms hides its settings. Currently I am looking at 1) My Documents\SQL Server Management Studio\ 2) HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Shell\Profile But whenever I change a "setting" in the vssettings-file in 1), Ssms thinks it is first time it runs, and overwrite. How can I change the Ssms setting manual, without doing it from the Ssms itself?

  I have a fancybox popup with a form inside it. When the form is posted it all works fine BUT after it is posted it redirects to the view and shows it on a full page. What i want is for the popup for to be posted and the fancy box to be closed. • asp.net 2.0 session timeout

  I apologize in advance for this likely being asked before. I have an asp.net 2.0 web application and am trying to set the session timeout. My first attempt was to add this to the web.config. < sessionState mode="InProc" timeout="300" Users would tell me though that after about 20 minutes of being idle and then trying to do something again on the site they'd be redirected back to the login page. So now I'm trying timeout="60" in my < forms tag in the web.config. I also tried Session.Timeout=60 in my global.asax. Should these work? Do I need something else? Thank you for your time and help.

  I have been asked to research the advantages/disadvantages the two application servers, but am new to the space and am having a terrible time finding an unbiased comparison of the two platforms. I understand that this is a broad question and I hate that I can't give a very specific use case (other than it will be an implementation in an organization with out a full time admin dedicated to management and it will be running in a mixed environment against JD Edwards/Oracle and SQLServer). Does anyone know of any (recently published) content that does a reasonable comparison or can any offer any insight into which might be the better choice and why. • A control that contains multiple duplicate properties causing deadlock issues on IIS

  I am trying to work out if the above case is true for our site. I've been told by my hosting provider that this fix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974165) has to applied to our server due to performance issues. It basically describes an issues where UI code like: <asp:gridview id="GridView1" runat="server" ... PageSize="100" PagerSettings-Mode="Numeric" PagerStyle-BorderStyle="None" PagerStyle-BorderColor="Navy" PagerStyle-HorizontalAlign="Right" PagerSettings-PageButtonCount="2" PagerSettings-Position="Bottom"> <PagerStyle HorizontalAlign="Left" BorderColor="Navy" BorderStyle="None"></PagerStyle> ... <PagerSettings PageButtonCount="2"></PagerSettings> ... </asp:gridview> causing the following warning on the server "ISAPI 'C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll' reported itself as unhealthy for the following reason: 'Deadlock detected'." Does anybody know of a way that I can detect this issue in the build process or the debugger? Any help would be much appreciate.

• Pretty Printer for T-SQL?

  I'm looking for a good T-SQL Pretty Printer so that all the code looks consistant between developers in our project. Preferably a free/open source one, but paid for isn't out of the realms of possibility as long as it's reasonably priced. Are there any particular industry leaders? I'm not that fussed about what particular standard it uses, but the more configurable the better. That way we can have little style wars among the developers and have a bit of fun to boot. ;-) I suppose I should add that Visual Studio and Management Studio integration would be considered favourably.

• Upgrading to IIS7 stopped Firefox from receiving cookies?

  Our website has been using IIS6 for a long time. We test on IE8, Firefox, and Chrome. All browsers worked fine. We recently did an upgrade to IIS7, and Chrome and IE8 continue to work normally, but Firefox appears to be unable to get the ASP session cookie. As a result, when our code checks the Session[] object, we see nothing, we think the user has logged out, and the site resets your session. Does anyone know why upgrading to IIS7 would cause this behavior in Firefox? We've: 1) Reverted our application pool back to classic mode (no change); 2) Added a dummy value in the Global.asax object (no change); and 3) changed the web.config file from "authentication cookieless=autodetect" to "cookieless=usercookie" and back (no change).

• Should I use WPF or ASP.NET for my next Web Application development?

  We have a web application that has been built using MySQL / PHP / Javascript+JQuery, with server-side HTML generation. The problem is that of the 10 software developers that work for the company, none are PHP experts (we're all .NET / C# developers). I need to make a recommendation to my management team on which technologies to use as the platform for the next generation of web application products. I want to leverage the .NET / C# expertise which the company has and is otherwise building, and so am inclined to recommend some Microsoft technologies. We don't want a client-side plugin, and we don't need flashy animations/multimedia, so I'm ruling out Silverlight. Is WPF ready for primetime? Is ASP.NET deprecated by WPF? How do I choose between these two technologies? Big Question, I know... I can refine it based on your comments if necessary. Thanks for taking the time.

• How do I show a user's credit based on their session

  Hi all - I'm developing a simple LAMP app where users can credit their account using Paypal. I suspect this is a simple issue, but have spent quite a while experimenting to no avail and would appreciate any thoughts: System has a user management system working fine using sessions, but I can't get it to display the current user's credit. But I've been trying things along the lines of: $result = mysql_query(" SELECT * FROM users INNER JOIN account ON account.UserID=account.UserID ORDER BY account.accountID"); while($_SESSION['Username'] = $row['Username'] ) { echo $row['Username']; echo $row['Credit']; } I suspect the while statement is invalid, but I want it to echo username and credit where the current session username = the username stored in the database. • Implementing Security on custom BCS/.net class?

  I'm implementing a custom BCS Model to get data from a backend system. As the backend uses it's own user management, I'm accessing it through a service account. All of this works well and allows me to pull data into SharePoint. However because it's channeled through the service account, everyone can access it, which is bad. Can anyone give me some tips which method to implement? The backend does not give me NT ACLs, but I wonder if I could just "fake" them somehow? (Essentially saying "This NT Group has Read Access" is good enough). I am aware of ISecurityTrimmer2 for Search Results, but ideally I want to cover security inside the BCS Model so that it applies to external lists as well. I want to avoid using Secure storage and mapping each individual user to the backend.

• Testing input fields not available for web service in Visual Web Developer Express

  I have a web service that I am trying to test in Visual Web Developer Express Edition (Service Pack 1). I am working with two different websites on two different branches from an SVN repository but largely the same code. The web services are the same code but there are some code differences for other features. My problem is that when going to the web service specification page in debug mode (i.e. MyWebService.asmx) there should be text fields for inputting parameters for that web service. On one of these web sites the fields are available. On another they are not available. I don't understand why/how there should be any differences between the two setups.

• SCSI Windows Setup on Dell Precision 670 Workstation...please help.

  Error Windows Setup: "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" This is not exactly a programming question but I thought you guys might be able to help. I just received a Dell Precision 670 workstation. Windows is not recognizing the hard drive and I have experienced this before with other computers. I usually would just go in the bios and set the configuration to compatibility mode. I have no idea how to do this on this machine. There is this Adaptec SCSI HostRaid BIOS v4.30.4S5 screen on startup. It says to press CTRL A for SCSI select utility. It shows a Maxtor ATLAS10K5_73WLS for the drive. I was wondering if anyone out there knew how to configure this thing so that windows setup will recognize the hard drive? Any advice is very much appreciated and if you have to know further information please let me know. Raid was turned off in the BIOS for this device. TY

• Do not fetch app.manifest each time

  For creating an offline version of a bunch of linked web pages I use an app.manifest-file that lists all the web pages for offline caching. I would like it that the app.manifest file is not fetched every time when a user jumps from one web page to another. Most of the web pages will never be updated once the application is on the iPhone. Also the target audience is abroad so roaming costs could add up while users are using my "web app". Searching the internet made me think in the direction of forcing an offline mode in Mobile Safari using Javascript but I don't know if this is the right way to go or if it is even possible. Does anyone have any other and/or better ideas and suggestions on how to do this?
