• How can I optimize my development machines files/dirs?

  Like any programmer, I've got a lot of stuff on my machine. Some of that stuff is projects of my own, some are projects I'm working on for my employer, others are open-source tools and projects, etc. Currently, I have my files organized as follows: /Code --/development (things I'm sort of hacking on plus maybe libraries used in other projects) --/scala (organized by language...why? I don't know!) --/android --/ruby --/employer_name -- /mobile --/android --/ios --/open-source (basically my forks that I'm pushing commits back upstream from) --/some-awesome-oss-project --/another-awesome-one --/tools random IDE settings sprinkled in here plus some other apps As you can see, things are kind of a mess here. How can I keep things organized in some sort of coherent fashion?

• CodePlex learns to talk to other services!

  CodePlex is now able to talk to other services! For example, if you want CodePlex to tell Trello to update cards on your Trello board, it can do it. Or if you want CodePlex to notify your Campfire chat room when updates are pushed, it can do that too. To start off, we are going to be adding support for the following services: Campfire – Notify a Campfire chat room when commits occur HipChat – Notify a HipChat chat room when commits occur Trello – Add commit summaries to Trello cards by referencing those cards in commit messages Twitter – Notify your Twitter followers when updates are pushed to your project In addition, we will continue to support our existing integrations with Windows Azure – Continuously deploy to Windows Azure on pushes (For Git and Hg projects) AppHarbor – Continuously deploy to AppHarbor on pushes To set up these integrations for your project, navigate to the project settings page as a project coordinator, and click on the services section as seen below:   While we are starting with these six services, the infrastructure is now in place to allow us to quickly roll out new integrations. We would love to hear which services and integrations you would like to see most on our suggestions page.   More and more computers are shipping sans-disc drive leading many industry watchers to proclaim the optical disc an endangered species on its way out. Do you still use your drive or are you letting the disc go? CNN Tech reports on the trend: Apple’s new iMac, its flagship desktop computer, was released Friday. For the first time, it has no disc drive. This marks a trend that has already begun on some laptops, like Apple’s MacBook Airs, and of course with mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. “Over time, an optical disc will be as much of an historical curiosity as a floppy disk,” said Michael Gartenberg, a tech-industry analyst with research firm Gartner Inc. According to Apple, where sleeker, thinner designs are always en vogue, dumping the disc drive was a no-brainer. • Is it bad to be the only person supporting software you have developed?

  My employer has a need for a web-based application to manage and share data within the department, with approximately 50-75 possible users. I feel I have the ability to write it for them. I would likely use Python/Django with a MySQL database, so it would be open source. However, I'm the only IT person in my department (our larger organization has a separate IT support staff with which I often work, but not for web development). I want to develop this application, but if I leave in 1-2 years, and someone else has to come in after me and support it, will this be seen as a bad decision? This is assuming all the obvious points -- I will write documentation, I will comment my code, and I will strive to follow good application design principles. But will that be enough? In principle, is it acceptable for one person to develop and support an entire web application? Is this a "do first, then show and ask" kind of situation, or should I be certain it will be adopted by everyone involved first?

• How should I structure my database to gain maximum efficiently in this scenario?

  I'm developing a PHP script that analyzes the web traffic of my clients websites. By placing a link to a javascript on the clients website (think of Google Analyses), my script harvests information like: the visitors IP address, reference link, current page link, user agent, etc. Now my clients can view these statistics via a control panel that I have build. These clients can also adjust profile settings, set firewall rules, create support tickets and pay invoices. Currently all the the traffic is stored in one table. You can imagine that this tabel would become very large as some my clients receive thousands of pageviews per day. Furthermore, all the traffic data of each client would be stored in the same table, creating a mess. This is the same for the firewall rules currently, and the invoice and support system. I'm looking for way to structure my database in a more organized way to hold large amounts of data of multiple users. This is the first project that I'm developing that deals with so much data, and would like to hear suggestions and tips. I was thinking of using multiple databases to structure the data. The main database will store users data (email,pass,id,etc) admin/website settings. Than each client will have an unique database labeled prefix_userid, which carry tables holding their traffic, invoice, and support ticket data. Would this be a solution, and would it slow down or speed up overall performances (that is spreading the data over muliple databases). I have a solid VPS, but would like to safe and be as effient as possible.

  Suppose you have two interfaces: interface Readable { public void read(); } interface Writable { public void write(); } In some cases the implementing objects can only support one of these but in a lot of cases the implementations will support both interfaces. The people who use the interfaces will have to do something like: // can't write to it without explicit casting Readable myObject = new MyObject(); // can't read from it without explicit casting Writable myObject = new MyObject(); // tight coupling to actual implementation MyObject myObject = new MyObject(); None of these options is terribly convenient, even more so when considering that you want this as a method parameter. One solution would be to declare a wrapping interface: interface TheWholeShabam extends Readable, Writable {} But this has one specific problem: all implementations that support both Readable and Writable have to implement TheWholeShabam if they want to be compatible with people using the interface. Even though it offers nothing apart from the guaranteed presence of both interfaces. Is there a clean solution to this problem or should I go for the wrapper interface? UPDATE It is in fact often necessary to have an object that is both readable and writable so simply seperating the concerns in the arguments is not always a clean solution. UPDATE2 (extracted as answer so it's easier to comment on) UPDATE3 Please beware that the primary usecase for this is not streams (although they too must be supported). Streams make a very specific distinction between input and output and there is a clear separation of responsibilities. • Extract large zip file (50G) on Mac OS X

  I was trying to move the files to another hard drive. So I archived all my photos in one large zip file using the Mac OS X built-in compress function. But the file failed to extract. I've tried many programs, but none of the programs I tried were able to extract the file. I've tried Mac OS X's extract utility, Stuffit Expander, 7zip (command line), all failed. Mac's archive utility and Stuffit don't seem to support large files, and 7zip's command line version gave an error stating unsupported archive. I have no luck in Windows too as many of my files have Chinese filenames, and couldn't extract to the correct name under Windows. Could anyone please suggest some programs that can support large files, can handle files compressed using Mac OS X's compress function, and can support UTF-8 filename? With or without GUI is fine.   Considering the PCWorld review that came out in March: Free Android Apps Packed with Ads are Major Battery Drains ...Researchers from Purdue University in collaboration with Microsoft claim that third-party advertising in free smartphone apps can be responsible for as much as 65 percent to 75 percent of an app's energy consumption... Is there a best practice for integrating advert support into mobile applications, so as to not drain user battery too much? ...When you fire up Angry Birds on your Android phone, the researchers found that the core gaming component only consumes about 18 percent of total app energy. The biggest battery suck comes from the software powering third-party ads and analytics accounting for 45 percent of total app energy, according to the study... Has anyone invoked better ways of keeping away from the "3G Tail", as the report puts it? Is it better/possible to download a large set of adverts that are cached for a few hours, and using them to populate your ad space, to avoid constant use of the Wi-Fi/3G radios?   Oracle's Secure Enterprise Search is part of PeopleSoft now.  It is provided as part of the Peopltools platform as an appliance, and is used with applications starting with release 9.2.  Secure Enterprise Search is a rich and powerful search product that can enhance search and navigation in PeopleSoft applications.  It also provides useful features like facets and filtering that are common in consumer search engines.Several questions have arisen about the deployment of SES and how to administer it and insure optimum performance.  People have also asked about what versions are supported on various platforms.  To address the most common of these questions, we are posting this list of tips.Platform SupportSES 11.1.2.2 does not support some of the platforms supported by PeopleTools, such as Windows 2012 and AIX 7.1. However, PeopleSoft and SES can use different operating system platforms when SES is deployed on a separate machine.SES 11.2.2.2 will have the required platform support for PT 8.53 in the future. We are planning to certify PT 8.53 once the testing is complete in 8.54 development and all platform support is released for 11.2.2.2.ArchitectureWe recommend running SES on a separate machine (from your apps) for two reasons:1.    SES bundles specific WebLogic, Java, and Oracle DB versions and might need different OS patches at a minimum than PeopleSoft. By having SES run on a different machine, these pre-requisites can be managed better through their lifecycle independenly for PeopleSoft and SES.2.    SES is resource intensive - it runs it's own WebLogic and Oracle database. By having SES run on its own machine, sufficient resources can be allocated to SES and free the PeopleSoft servers from impacts of SES load patterns.We will be providing a comprehensive red paper covering PeopleSoft/SES administration in the near future, but until that is published, we'll post tips on this blog.

• OS choice for functional developing

  I'm mainly a .NET developer so I normaly use Windows/VisualStudio (that means: I'm spoiled) but I'm enjoying Haskell and other (mostly functional) languagues in my spare time. Now for Haskell the windows-support is ok (you can get the Haskell-Platform) but latley I tried to get a basic Clojure/Scheme environment set up and it's just a pain on windows. So I'm thinking about trying out another OS for better tooling and languague support. Of course that leaves me with MacOS or some Linux distribution. I never used MacOS before and of course Linux would be cheaper (free) and I don't think I can parallel-boot MacOS on your normal PC-Hardware (can you?). PLUS: I don't have a clue about the tools you can use on those (to me) forign OSs. To make it short: I want to explore more Haskell, Clojure, Scala, Scheme and of course need at least good tooling for JavaScript/HTML5/Css. Support for .NET/Mono/F# would be great but for this I will still have my Win7 boot. So I like to know: - what is your prefered OS, Distribution (is Ubuntu viable?) - what Editor/IDE are you using Thank you for your help!   I'm working with Hosted SharePoint 2007 with Forms Server. I need to allow client access to submit HTML forms designed in Infopath. Problem is, I need to make sure the clients don't see the library. There is sensitive data that will be on these forms. I also need to have a repeated library that is based on the Internal Admin records and requirements. Outside of making a seperate library per customer, does anyone have any suggestions? My Goal: 1: Customers enter their requests through a link or provided page 2: Internally address the requests and perform required arrangements, add billing and payment fields 3: Have SharePoint metrics, reports, etc... based on the provided intormation and status.   Follow these simple guidelines to make collaboration using SharePoint easier:1. File Name:While it is allowed to use spaces in your filename (and maybe it seems even logical to do so), don’t use them if your file will end up (or is born on) SharePoint. When you use the “download a copy” functionality, SharePoint will replace the spaces with an “_”. This might (will) result in inconsistency when you upload the “same” file again, since SharePoint will see this as a different file (since the filename is different). I recommend using a filename with Capitalization style naming guideline. For instance: the document “Overall governance model.docx” would be named “OverallGovernanceModel.docx”Use the TITLE field in the office applications to give your document a title (and subtitle and keywords, .) The title column can be used in a view in a library. You can get to the document properties by clicking on 'Office Button/Prepare/Properties'. (Office 2007). This is metadata that is stored with the document, and will remain in the document (even if you exchange this document via e-mail, via an external hard drive). The filename cannot be longer than 128 characters. (and that is IMHO far beyond reasonable) You cannot use any of these characters: ” # % & * : < > ? \ / { | } ~ 2. Versioning:SharePoint has a built-in versioning system. You can work with major (published) versions, and minor (draft) versions. Of each of these two document types, you can store a numbers of versions that are kept. Watch out, each version is saved, not only the delta between 2 versions, and this counts to your Site Collection Quota. (Example: you have a Word document with a size of 2 MB. When you keep 5 Drafts this will result in storing (and consuming) 10 MB.So, don’t call your document “NewUserAccountProcessDRAFTv1.docx”, but “NewUserAccountProcess.docx” and use versioning setting in your library.You can enable views on your library to display the version number.You can enable the version number to be displayed in a Word document.3.   I'm converting mp4 videos to webm with the following command: avconv -i INPUT.mp4 -c:v libvpx -qmin 10 -qmax 42 -maxrate 500k -bufsize 1000k -threads 2 -c:a libvorbis OUTPUT.webm Am I doing something wrong? Should I use all of these parameters? I just want to make the videos compatible with all the browsers/devices. The videos are not working on Firefox on most devices and on Chrome in a specific Android device that I have. EDIT: When i play the embeded videos on firefox, on any android device, it goes straight to the end and doesn't play. It only plays if i click in the progress bar. If i open the videos on firefox without embedding them in a html page, they seem to have a bigger width box outside then, while the video is inside it. I uploaded a video that i converted. • Trying to compile from source newest apache with newest openssl

  I need to install apache 2.4.10 using openssl 1.0.1i. I compiled openssl from source with: $ ./config \ --prefix=/opt/openssl-1.0.1i \ --openssldir=/opt/openssl-1.0.1i $ make $ sudo make install and Apache with: ./configure --prefix=/etc/apache2 \ --enable-access_compat=shared \ --enable-actions=shared \ --enable-alias=shared \ --enable-allowmethods=shared \ --enable-auth_basic=shared \ --enable-authn_core=shared \ --enable-authn_file=shared \ --enable-authz_core=shared \ --enable-authz_groupfile=shared \ --enable-authz_host=shared \ --enable-authz_user=shared \ --enable-autoindex=shared \ --enable-dir=shared \ --enable-env=shared \ --enable-headers=shared \ --enable-include=shared \ --enable-log_config=shared \ --enable-mime=shared \ --enable-negotiation=shared \ --enable-proxy=shared \ --enable-proxy_http=shared \ --enable-rewrite=shared \ --enable-setenvif=shared \ --enable-ssl=shared \ --enable-unixd=shared \ --enable-ssl \ --with-ssl=/opt/openssl-1.0.1i \ --enable-ssl-staticlib-deps \ --enable-mods-static=ssl make (would run sudo make install next but I get an error) I'm essentially following the guide here except with newer slightly newer versions. I would prefer to just use aptitude, but unfortunately the versions I need aren't available yet. If anyone knows how to fix the linker problem (or what I think is a linker problem), or knows of a better way to tell apache to use a newer openssl, it would be greatly appreciated; I've got apache 1.0.1i working otherwise.
