• Rails 3: What is the proper way to respond to REST-ful actions with JSON in rails?

  Hello SO. I'm trying to make an API for my rails application using JSON responses to RESTful resource controllers. This is a new experience for me, so I'm looking for some guidance and pointers. To start things off: In a rails application, what is the "proper" way to respond with JSON to REST-ful controller methods? (create, update, destroy) Is there an idiomatic way to indicate success/failure through a JSON response? Additional information: I'm currently working with rails 3.0.beta2 I would like to avoid using a plugin or gem to do the grunt work, my goal is to gain a better understanding of how to make a rails 3 API. Links to places I could find more information on the topic would also be appreciated, some quick searching on google didn't do me much good.

• Sparse O(1) array with indices being consecutive products

  Hello, I'd like to pre-calculate an array of values of some unary function f. I know that I'll only need the values for f(x) where x is of the form of a*b, where both a and b are integers in range 0..N. The obvious time-optimized choice is just to make an array of size N*N and just pre-calculate just the elements which I'm going to read later. For f(a*b), I'd just check and set tab[a*b]. This is the fastest method possible - however, this is going to take a lot of space as there are lots of indices in this array (starting with N+1) which will never by touched. Another solution is to make a simple tree map... but this slows down the lookup itself very heavily by introducing lots of branches. No. I wonder - is there any solution to make such an array less sparse and smaller, but still quick branchless O(1) in lookup?

  Hello SO, I have a very weird problem with PROLOG. I have used it before, but it's been a while and I'm rusty. I have a list of variables and I need to ensure that none of them are the same. I have tried: use_module(library(bounds)). all_different(A, B, C, D, 6, 8). However, when I try this, I get an error saying that all_different/6 is undefined. How can I go about solving this issue? Is there any library function that I can call directly for this? I am VERY stuck and would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

  Hello I am trying to DRY up some code by moving some logic into the FormBuilder. After reading the documentation about how to select and alternative form builder the logical solution for me seemed to be something like this. In the view <% form_for @event, :builder => TestFormBuilder do |f| %> <%= f.test %> <%= f.submit 'Update' %> <% end %> and then in app/helpers/application_helper.rb module ApplicationHelper class TestFormBuilder < ActionView::Helpers::FormBuilder def test puts 'apa' end end end This, however, gives me an error at the "form_for" uninitialized constant ActionView::Base::CompiledTemplates::TestFormBuilder Where am I doing it wrong?

  Hello, I have an asp.net user control, userControl1.ascx, and another user control, userControl2.ascx. userControl2 is inside userControl1. userControl1 is inside an UpdatePanel control. userControl2 has a button in it then I want to have do a normal post back when pushed. I want to use ScriptManager.RegisterPostBackControl(button). I have a ScriptManager on a master page. I don't know how to access the ScriptManager in userControl2 to register the button in the Page_Load event. So, How can I do this?

  Hello, I'd like to implement some custom behavior of Space key in a ListView. Basically I'd like to toggle selected status of the item under cursor - that should be fairly simple this.FocusedItem.Selected = !this.FocusedItem.Selected; but alas, it also does the default action, which is to select the focused item. This way I am unable to 'unselect' the focused item. I've looked for similar problems and they suggest using PreviewKeyDown event, in which I would process the key and disallow the ListView to do its default action. But the PreviewKeyDown event argument has no "handled" property, so I cannot 'eat' this key.

  Hello, Am wondering if there would be any security flaw in this approach. I am writing a piece of code which allows users to upload files and another set to download those files. These files can be anything. User uploads the file (any file including .php files), it is renamed to an md5 hash (extension removed) and stored on server. A corresponding mySQL entry is made. The user trying to download the file, uses say download.php to download the file where the md5 file is sent (with the original name). Is there someway in which anyone can exploit the above scenario?

• Asynchronous Processing = Spanning Threads = Valid?

  Hello Experts, am I allowed (without any sideeffects) to create and start a new Thread() from within a doGet() Method of a servlet? Or does this somehow leak ressources? Is it valid to also pass the "Session" Object into the Thread to later save the result of my asynchronous processing (I will synchronized correctly) in the session? Or will this leak ressources when using the session "in indepedant threads"? = What would happen if the session meanwhile would be expired by the webcontainer as it has timedout and I will access it from my thread? Or would could this also lead to the sideffect, that storing the session in the thread will prevent the webcontainer from expiring the session at all (and therefore finally leak ressources as the sessions do not get cleared up)? (I know there are other Solutions, like working with DB-(Job)Records, JMS or Servlets 3.0) but I need so solve the problem as described by spanning a new Thread within doGet.) Thank you very much!!   Hello all and thanks for your time reading this. I need to verify certificates issued by my own CA, for which I have a certificate. How can I do the equivalent to openssl's openssl verify -CAfile in Ruby code? The RDoc for OpenSSL is not very helpful in this regard. I've tried: require 'openssl' ca = OpenSSL::X509::Certificate.new(File.read('ca-cert.pem')) lic = OpenSSL::X509::Certificate.new(File.read('cert.pem')) puts lic.verify( ca ) but I get: test.rb:7:in `verify': wrong argument (OpenSSL::X509::Certificate)! (Expected kind of OpenSSL::PKey::PKey) (TypeError) from test.rb:7 I can't even find "verify" in the OpenSSL Rdoc at http://www.ruby-doc.org/stdlib/libdoc/openssl/rdoc/index.html.   Hello, I have inherited a project, it was originally written in VS2005. I have made a few changes, but all are design. Now when I run the project using the visual studio's web server, in IE8, the page shows up just fine, however in FireFox 3.6.3, I get gibberish (a full page of this): ?I?%&/m?{J?J??t??$?@?????iG#)?*??eVe]f@?? ??{???{??;?N'????\fdl??J??!????~|?"~???????7????t?.???WO???? m???{'w?}?4??????x'}??W?{???G?G?]=?{???j|uo\?w???Pv??? • Basic XStream Annotations

  Hello, I just started using XStream Annotations, and I am trying to figure out how to associate the annotations with the XStream object. From the documentation, it seems like this is the accepted method: XStream xstream = new XStream(new DomDriver()); xstream.processAnnotations(AnnotatedClass.class); My problem with this is that Eclipse isn't recognizing this as a valid method. Everything seems to be configured correctly in Eclipse because it shows me the rest of the methods that are in the XStream object. It's almost like Eclipse thinks it's an older version of xstream. I've tried running a Project Clean inside of Eclipse but that didn't fix anything. I've also tried downloading the XStream jar again which didn't help either. Versions: XStream 1.3.1, Eclipse 3.4, Java 6 Has anybody seen this strange behavior before, or have any ideas on how to fix it?

• Custom filename in a rolling Log4Net logfile?

  Hello We have a ASP .Net application whereby we use Log4Net to log details within the app - nothing new there - and the rolling log filenames are in the usual format of: rolling-log.txt rolling-log.txt.1 rolling-log.txt.2 etc. A each user of the application adds to the logfile, the logfile can be difficult to read for a specific user's case and so, we'd like to modify the config file somehow to record the user's log details individually, each writing to a specific file, e.g. <applicationId>rolling-log.txt <applicationId>rolling-log.txt.1 <applicationId>rolling-log.txt.2 etc. where is each user's unique application Id, made up of a five digit number, e.g. 12345rolling-log.txt Any ideas on the best way to implement this, assuming that it's possible?   Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

• TinyMCE editor dislikes being moved around

  Hello guys, On a page I have, I need to move TinyMCE editors in the DOM tree once in a while. However, for some reason, the editor doesn't like it: it clears itself completely and becomes unusable. As far as I can see, this behavior is consistent between Safari 4 and Firefox 3.6, but not Internet Explorer 7/8. Here's an example. It truly is pissing me off to do something that works in Internet Explorer but not with more appreciable browsers. Is there something I missed in the docs about never trying to move an editor in the DOM tree? Is there some kind of workaround?

  How do you add spacing after an \hline in a tabular? I can add spacing before it using \vspace, however if I try to add spacing after the \hline, the spacing will come after the next line of text. Here is what I have so far: \multicolumn{2}{Hello!} \vspace{4pt} \\ \hline \textit{Hi!} & \textit{Ho!} I don't want to add a line break after the \hline and do something like \vspace{-xxpt} or use \rule because the generated HTML document from Hevea will be ugly.

• Java simple encryption

  Hello, I would like to encrypt a textual (configuration) file stored on disk. Trying to use DES encryption I've had fatal error on client machines, I later found out caused because the algorithm could not handle accented characters (!) I suspect that was because I was using old packages (sun.misc.BASE64Decoder) - but I'm not sure that is the reason. However, I'm looking for a simpler solution - I need a really simple encryption (I know some people would not agree on that) - not RSA of 128 bit keys or so, just obscuring the text from curious eyes. It is really weird that I could not find on the web a simple trivial solution. Any idea, anyone ? Thanks, Ran
