• Can I get "disk utilization" from a NetApp filer via SNMP?

  On a NetApp filer's command line I'm running "sysstat -u" to show disk utilization, (actually the utilization of the single busiest disk). By disk utilization, I mean "percent of time the disk is busy", not "how much space on the disk is being used to store data/metadata". Is there a way to get disk utilization info through SNMP? The netapp.mib file doesn't appear to expose this. It does have CPU utilization, disk usage & capacity information, etc, but not disk utilization. The MIB-II (rfc1213) seems to be the only other information exposed by the filer through SNMP. I hope I am missing something. The "CP (consistency point) time" metric is exposed through the NETAPP-MIB in SNMP, but this seems to only partially correlate with disk utilization under write load, and not really at all under read load.

• Can I disable email alarms in iCal?

  I have iCal syncing with a Google Calendar account, and for some reason, some meeting invites that I accept wind up with an email alarm set for 10 minutes before the meeting. This causes iCal to send me an email through Mail.app at the appointed time. This is a pain in the neck, because Mail.app launches if it's not open (and since I use a different client, it never is), and if I'm offline, Mail.app starts throwing up error messages. And besides, I don't want meeting alarms in my inbox. Is there any way to completely disable email alarms in iCal? The only option I see is "Turn off all alarms" - but I don't want to turn off the pop-up windows, just the emails. I remove those alarms any time I come across them, but sometimes they slip through.

• Configure IIS to rewrite IP Address to Site Name

  So i've started my first web site from home, and I'm trying to get it up and running and google crawlable and the like, but I can't seem to figure out how to have my site name returned in the address bar instead of my IP address. I've purchased a domain name for my site on Godaddy and then set it to redirect to my site. When you type in the domain name, you get redirected to http://0.0.0.0/default.aspx (not my real IP obviously), and that stays in the user's address bar. In order to fix that temporarily, I've set up masking on Go Daddy which keeps the URL in the address bar, but just shows my website in a frame. This is fine for users visiting the site, however any kind of automated robot such as GoogleBot cannot discover my content because of the frame. I've looked into ISAPI filters and server-site-rewriting, and the like... but I just can't quite figure out how to do what I need it to do. Any simple suggestions or links would be appreciated.

• unique .htaccess question about mod_rewrite and RewriteCond

  I have a few rewrite rules like these RewriteRule ^dir/(.*)-something.html otherdir/file1.php?var1=val&var2=$1 [L,NC] RewriteRule ^dir/ otherdir/file2.php?var1=val [L,NC] dir/ is not a real directory. Everything above works as expected. However, the user is able to type anything like mysite.com/dir/asdfasdfasdfsdf And they are still redirected to file2.php. If the user types in just garbage I'd like to serve a 404 instead. I'm guessing I need a RewiteCond that will test for blank space after the slash and only then serve file2.php, but I'm unsure how to write it.

• OpenLDAP Password Expiration with pwdReset=TRUE?

  I have configured the ppolicy overlay for OpenLDAP to enable password policies. These things work: Password lockouts on too many failed attempts Password Change required once pwdReset=TRUE added to user entry Password Expirations If the account is locked out due to intrusion attempts (too many bad passwords) or time (expiration time hit), the account must be reset by an administrator. However, when the administrator sets pwdReset=TRUE in the profile, this seems to also override the expiration policy. So, the password that the administrator sent out (which should be a temporary password) ends up being valid permanently. Is there a way in OpenLDAP to have a password that must be changed, but also MUST expire?

• Windows Live Writer fails to start

  I installed windows live writer and configured it to connect to my xmlrpc enabled blog engine. After doing so, it threw an unrecoverable error and closed down. After attempting to restart windows live writer, it throws the following exception each time: Description: Windows Live Writer has encountered a problem: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed. Problem signature: Problem Event Name: WindowsLiveWriter Problem Signature 01: CreateThis Problem Signature 02: 115 Problem Signature 03: System.UriFormatException Problem Signature 04: 15.4.3555.308 Problem Signature 05: 2.0.50727.5456 Problem Signature 06: Windows Live Writer OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Since I was unable to start windows live writer at all, I tried uninstalling it and removing all files associated with it in my "C:/users/[username]/appdata" folder. After that, I re-installed it and still get the error every time I try to launch the application. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

• Where can I learn various hacking techniques on the web?

  I would like to try my hand at hacking -- that is, exploiting various website vulnerabilities. Not for any illegal purpose mind you, but so I can have a better understanding and appreciation of these exploits while writing my own web software. I seem to recall that there was a community that hosted a bunch of demo websites, and you had to find and exploit certain vulnerabilities with each one. I can't remember what it is called but this is the sort of thing I am looking for -- I have read a tonne of little XSS and CSRF examples but have yet to find a real-life hands-on example of one. Does anyone know of such a place, where I can be given an example page and look for security holes? I would really rather not try this with actual websites, I don't want to break any laws.

• Blank displays after inactivity, mouse cursor not showing up

  I have a Windows 7 Enterprise x86 machine that is exhibiting some strange problems. After some inactivity (it varies how long it takes), when I come back to my computer, both of my monitors are black. The monitors are on, with a black display. Moving the mouse and pressing keys on the keyboard do not work. This happens at least once a day. When I first encountered the issue, I performed a hard shutdown and restarted the computer. About 10% of the time when I did this, the resolutions on my monitors were messed up. The native resolution on the primary monitor is 1600x900, and the native on my secondary is 1440x900. None of the widescreen resolutions would be present in the display properties. I had 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024. As a workaround to this issue, I've found that if I plug in my secondary monitor as the primary monitor, and leave the secondary unplugged, then Windows will start in 1024x768 on the secondary. Then, I can use Windows 7's "Detect" feature and it finds the 1440x900 resolution, and sets it. Then I have to connect the primary monitor to the secondary port and set it as the primary. Then I can switch the two cables, putting the primary into the primary, the secondary into the secondary. Then use the "Detect" feature again, and it finds the correct resolutions. Some time after performing the above, I discovered that when the screens were blanked, I could simply press "Control+Alt+Delete", type in my password, and everything comes up fine - except my mouse cursor. All applications and features work as intended, except there is no mouse cursor (the mouse actually works though...). I have the "Show location of pointer when I press CTRL key" option selected, so I can press CTRL and use my mouse as normal - but I have no actual cursor. When the computer is in this state, UAC is also not functional. Whenever a UAC prompt appears, the screens go black (the original symptoms) and I have to press Escape to exit UAC. Because of the above symptoms (the UAC black screen thing, etc) I beleive winlogon.exe may be the culprit. However, I have no idea how to fix it. I am unable to restart winlogon.exe due to the problems I am having with winlogon.exe (the UAC black screen) Looking for any ideas.... More information Windows 7 x86 Enterprise Domain environment (I have a secondary account with administrator rights) Dell Optiplex 960 Cannot perform "optional" windows updates due to an activation issue (I am testing a windows 7 image, and an activation infrastructure has not been created yet. However, this issue was happening before I was unable to perform windows update, and windows was up to date at the time Updated video card driver (as an attempt to fixing the resolution issue) Disabled all power saving options Please let me know what else you need to help me solve this issue! • Problems getting Squirrelmail and passenger working on apache

  I'm trying to have a setup where I want to run a squirrelmail and Passenger on the same apache server, having a url point to squirrelmail and everything else handled by passenger. I've gotten so far that both squirrelmail and passenger will run fine by themselves but when passenger is running it handles all urls. So far I've tried using Alias and Redirect to point a webmail/ url to squirrelmails directory but that does not work. • At what point does Active Directory and Domain Services become necessary? [closed]

  I see time and time again such services running in a business environment with only 10 users. Everyone in the office authenticates with the DC and interacts with a shared drive where files and documents are stored. I can't help but think...reeeeealy? But I don't know, that's why I'm asking. To me it seems like you need to reach a certain threshold of size and needs before you throw a DC into the mix. ie: a 20+ user business (and growing) with permission requirements that separate the sales team from accounting. Thoughts?

• Windows unrecoverable error wouldn't come out of Hibernate

  Out of curiosity... I was in a rush: I put my laptop into Hibernate (I don't keep a battery in it btw) Leaned it against a box in the laundry room Smooth tile floor means bottom of laptop slide out and laptop feel flat against floor, not super hard, but it wasn't carpeting so.. Next time I booted my laptop, I received this error for the first time ever: (not an exact quote) Windows experienced an unrecoverable error and cannot come out of Hibernate. Windows is restarting now After that, my laptop seemed to operate flawlessly. What do you think happened? Jared the electronics? I'm guessing an error like this would result of some sort of hard drive trauma, but fortunately, I have discovered none so far. I scheduled Error-checking for next restart.

• Drawbacks of installing linux on usb stick?

  I am setting up a router/nas/http/whatever server based on an ION mini-ITX board. I've installed Ubuntu Server on an old 160 GB drive, but it generates a lot more heat and vibrates more than my other new drive (storage). It just doesn't fit the concept, and worse: it takes up a SATA port. As SSD's are crazy expensive I'm thinking of buying an extra 4 GB USB stick, and raid0 it. From my point of view, these are the pros/cons: Pros Low power consumption No vibrations No heat Smaller Get to buy new, larger USB stick (:D) Cons Shorter life time Slower Raid 0 More work maintaing/installing? I think the pros overweighs the cons. Shorter life time and raid 0 is countered by regular backups of the configs/settings. Slower is partially countered by raid 0, and I don't know about the last one. What do You think? Experience? Another solution?

• Client backup solution for small (100-150 user) homogenous win/nix/mac office?

  We are currently using Symantec Backup Exec with Desktop and Laptop Option for our Windows clients, time machine for mac and offer simple rsync to linux users, in addition to home folders that are always backed up and available. We are not overly happy with the horrid complexity and multitude of minor bugs in SBE, but "when you don't touch it, it mostly works". Ideally we'd like to offer a real and full backup solution to all clients, but mostly to Linux users, as they don't have a good alternative. I have barely tested Druva on windows, and it is promising in its simplicity and "it just works" looks, but does anyone have experience with it? This post lists some that I will look at.

• ARM laptop available?

  Hearing all the fuss about some new consumer product that uses an ARM Cortex A8, I'm interested to get in on some of the action. But I want a real programmable computer running something like Linux. I've seen many, many reports in the past 2 or 3 years about prototype ARM laptops with great battery life. Unfortunately, when I tried googling today, all I can find are the old videos and press releases about the prototypes, not a shipping product. Is there an actual ARM laptop available today? Or did everybody give up and just use Intel Atom chips?

• Parallels 5: upgrade from Vista to Win 7: annoying deadlock

  What I have: Parallels 5, Vista installed. Trying to upgrade to Win 7. I have the Win7 .iso mounted as a DVD to my virtual machine. When I start the machine from this DVD, and attempt the upgrade, I'm told (paraphrased) "You booted from DVD. Don't do this. Reboot, then insert the DVD, commence the upgrade from there." But when I try that, the upgrade keeps failing because "There is not enough disk space". I've proven this is a red herring of an error message; the real problem is the installer can't find -any- disk drives. When I instead choose the "Advanced" install, and I am prompted to choose the disk drive, there aren't any to choose from. How do unblock this deadlock?

• How to calibrate a HDTV that is being used as monitor?

  I have a HDTV I am using as a second monitor. The first monitor, is a real computer monitor, not a TV and has a fantastic image. The second one, the HDTV has a good image, but it is a little bit blurred and has the problem you can see on the picture below, a kind of red halo around the edges. I think it has something to do with red contrast. Other colors show this problem too, specially the green. The problem is that the TV has no contrast adjustment. Instead it has something called IRE 10 points and IRE 2 points. Taking IRE 10 for example, it has 4 controls for each of the 10 points: luminosity, R, G and B. I could not find a page where I can understand what this IRE is and how should I adjust this. Can someone tell me how should I proceed to calibrate this TV for best picture? thanks for any help.

  Hello everyone! I have a very poor internet connection when I'm living at home. The only time I have a good internet is at college. When I get home, the most mundane task like opening a web-page becomes a five minute stress-test. So what I was thinking was to download the web-page, for example superdickery. I was wondering what the best method would be to download the entire image archive of the page? Would this be illegal, if I did this? It's just that I don't want to be frustrated every time I just want to load a simple jpeg image.

• Microsoft signed drivers appears as publisher not verfied

  Task at hand: Microsoft sign drivers on Win 7. I microsoft signed my driver package 3 times every time thinking I might have missed a step or something. However, I cannot seem to get rid of the Windows Security error message "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software'. This is not the first time I have signed the driver packages. I was successfully able to sign other driver packages a few months ago. However, with this driver package I keep getting Windows security dialog box. Here's the procedure I follow - Create a new cat file using INF2CAT tool. Self sign the driver using a Versign Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority - G5.cer. Run the microsoft tests on DTM Servers and clients with the devices that use this driver. Create WLK submission package. Self sign the cab file. Submit the package for certification. The catalog file that comes back after successfully passing tests says Name of signer "Microsoft Windows Hardware Comptibility Publisher". When I check the validity of signature using SignTool, it says the signature is vaild. However, when I try to install the driver with new signed catalog file the windows complain. Any ideas? Edit 11/12/2012: Reply to Eugene's comment Thanks for the help, Eugene. Yes. I did sign two other driver packages before. One of them was modified version of WinUSB driver. I am using the same certificate I used when I signed those two driver packages a few months ago. It costs $250 per signing from Microsoft. I would think that Microsoft would complain about it during certification if the certificate is wrong. I use the following command to self sign the CAT file. • How to persist changes to instances in the cloud.

  Hi folks, I must be missing something here, but can someone clue me in on how to persist changes (such as software installs etc) on machines in the cloud (either EC2 or my own Eucalyptus cloud). I have instances running.. can attach extra disks to them etc., but every time I terminate the instance, all of my changes are lost the next time I run them. Now, this sort of makes sense in that the instances are virtual, but, there must be some way to make these changes persist. I'm just missing how its done. Thanks. Peter.

• Archive Recorded Show from DVR

  IF I have an AT&T U-Verse DVR, is there a way to copy the information off the DVR to an PC for Archiving/burning to a DVD? I know that I could connect the A/V outs on the DVR to the A/V inputs on a DVD Recorder, or to a capture card on a PC, and Play the show, and record in real-time on the DVD or PC, but if the show is say a World Cup Game, this would take 2-3 hours per. My thought is that the DVR is just a HardDrive, and the files have to be stored in an digital format, it should be possible to do a copy of some sort. I'm currently recording all of the WC games, but if I don't watch them right away, I'm concerned that I will push other programming that the rest of the family has recorded out, making me unpopular at home. Note, I'm talking about archiving for personal use, not redistribution or anything.

• How to clear stuck locked maildrop pop3 process

  I am using cyrus for imap and pop One of my users is getting the following error: Unable to lock maildrop : Mailbox is locked by POP server. I can see where it starts in the log. I've read that there is no physical lock file anymore (i've tried looking for it anyways) and that the solution is to just wait for the timeout, or kill the offending pop3 process. I know that this is happening because of a lossy connection on the part of the affected user, and that pop3 can only have 1 session active at a time. I need to manually clear the lock and I am having trouble finding the offending pop process. I have tried lsof, but it doesn't say how long the individual files (sockets) have been opened for. I've reduced the tcp keepalive time down to 5 mins, but I still need to reset this guy's lock. I could use some pointers. Thanks!

  I have my laptop (running Windows XP SP3) at work hooked up to an external monitor. Whenever I unplug the external monitor (time to go home!) I have to manually change the display settings. This takes time and involves a lot of clicks. Is there a way to automate changing these settings? I'm thinking of a hotkey solution or a little application that I can start with Launchy to toggle between two profiles. I use the MultiMon tool for "extending" the taskbar to the second monitor - will I have to give that up?

• Pressing an accent key (´ / ?) adds the character twice in most programs

  This might seem as duplicate of Pressing key with accent character makes it enter twice but it is not: About three days ago, the issue started - I am using Slovak (Slovakia) keyboard, and the key for adding accents/diacritics (just left from backspace) acts strangely - it should "do nothing" upon pressing, and then when character key is pressed right after it, it should output that character with accent/diacritics. However, in most programs, pressing it once results in immediately outputting the accent itself twice (which under normal circumstances happens when you press the key twice). This issue doesn't happen in Visual Studio or any program I make in it, and Pidgin, it seems to happen everywhere else (firefox, notepad, MS OneNote, Windows Explorer itself). I am not aware of any software installations, driver changes or system updates between the time it worked properly and the time when it broke. What could be the problem and how do I solve it?
