• Should i keep css of home page and landing pages in seperate css?

  Should i keep CSS of home page and landing pages in separate CSS file of big sites. ? If i make site with a 7-8 different templates where 1 templates of home pages 1 is for inner content pages and other template for different type of landing pages. and different style needed for same HTML elements in website , For example : for inner pages H2 has different style but for landing pages H2 is different in color, font -size, line height, top bottom margin How i should manage all this ? any tips to make good,easily manageable, scan-able CSS.   I'm trying to write a Postgres trigger such that when a configuration table is updated, a backend component is notified and can handle the change. I know that Oracle has the concept of a web/HTTP trigger, where you can execute an HTTP GET from the Oracle instance itself to a URL that can then handle the request at the application layer. I'm wondering if Postgres (v. 9.0.5) has the same feature, or comes with anything similar (and, subsequently, how to set it up/configure it)?

• Can I use Cygwin as a replacement for Ubuntu, for bash script testing?

  Next wednesday i'm having an exam on Operating Systems. In this exam there will also be a part bash-scripting. The teacher itself will test the scripts in a Virtual Machine running Ubuntu. Myself, however, I'm having serious troubles with running the latest Ubuntu (14.04 LTS) on a Virtual Machine (there are troubles with gnome running very slow). So I'm thinking about using Cygwin, which is doing the job great for another course. The teacher already confirmed I can use that, but I'm thinking he doesn't know it at all. I've already tested the scripts we made in class and they're all running without errors. But I'm quite sure there are some things I have to mind on. My question: would you use Cygwin as a replacement for the Ubuntu VM? Or should I stick it with the VM (maybe by using a different config/platform).

• How do I check if a program can potentially be a virus?

  I am running Windows XP in a VM. I want to download a few applications and install the one by one and check if they potentially can be a virus. I assume virus would need to add something to the startup folder, or the application in the startup section in the registry or add a service. What else might it do to become active? Anyway, how can I check to see if a program may be a virus? I use hijack this to get a list of processes and I simply compare it from before I installed to after and see if there's anything different. Is this good enough? My main OS is Windows 7 but I do not have that in a VM and don't see a reason to test with that.

  Hi, I do not have deeper knowledge of the storage area, sorry for asking evidently stupid questions :) We are thinking about getting HP StorageWorks MSA60 for storing our VM. Do we need another DL server with controller so that we could use iSCSI ? Do we need to get some P800 controller for doing that? I cannot imagine how it is connected together actually ... MSA60-DLserver with p800 controller and servers that are running VM connected with iSCSI to this DL server ? Or MSA60 directly supports iSCSI so the DL server is not necessary ? What is inside this MSA60? Is it possible to install there OS ? Thank you.

  I have multiple templates which differs with each other only by few containers. The most complex one contains superset of all containers used in all other one thus to avoid creating multiple templates I created the most complex one in following format some layout stuff (div and all) defining nested insert for each container and content. Now in client template based on what is needed I turn off container which is not needed as else if container is needed, just define content as doSomething Please let me know if you guys see any issues with this approach, any potential problem or alternate approach for similar scenario. thanks a lot. • Colliding network addresses

  A customer is using the same address space as the company network. I need to connect with Cisco VPN Client to the network of the customer, without affecting local connectivity. To keep all working, I connect from a VM to avoid network addressing collisions. This works, but I'm looking for a way to get rid of the VM. Is it possible to connect with Cisco VPN Client 4.8 from Windows 7, without changing the 'normal' routing? How to tell specific applications (most importantly: Putty, VNC, mstsc, psql) to resolve their routes to the VPN instead of the default network interface? Have been hearing about SOCKS-proxies, is that something that could be made to work? I fear that this is a a bit of a crude question, but I'd be happy to specify more details/context.

• CentOS running inside VMware as WebServer times out on outside connection [migrated]

  I have a CentOS machine running inside VMware, and I have got PHP and Apache set up on it, so if I open a browser (on the VM) and go to either localhost, or 192.168.0.3, I get a phpinfo page I made in /var/www/html/index.php, but, if on the host (Windows 7), in my browser I go to 192.168.0.3, it times out. I can ping the IP address from Windows and get a response, I just can't through the browser. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get this working? This is my first time using a VM and I'm getting lost in the network settings.

  I have to make a process in Oracle/PLSQL.....i have to verify that the interval of time between start_date and end_date from a new row that i create must not intersect other start_dates and end_dates from other rows. Now I need to check each row for that condition and if it doesn't correspond the repetitive instruction should stop and after that to display a message such as "The interval of time given is not correct". I don't know how to make repetitive instructions in Oracle/PLSQL and I would appreciate if you would help me.

• how to find out what is causing huge dentry_cache usage?

  Note that inode_cache & ext3_inode_cache slabs are very small compared to dentry_cache. What happens is that slowly and steadily the within a week dentry_cache grows from 1M to ~5-6G Then I need to run echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches && echo 0 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches This started to happening one day on all servers hosting some web code - the developers are saying that they have not changed anything related to filesystem access pattern around the time then the problem started. The system is centos5 with 2.6.18 kernel so I don't have any instrumentation features available th newer kernels. Any I idea how I can debug the problem? maybe with systemtap? This is a ec2 instance - so not even sure that systemtap will work there. Thanks Alex

• VLAN help on ESX 4/vSphere

  I setup a new VLAN with ID 153 in vSphere for my ESX4 server. The VLAN is setup for virtual machines and then I added a new NIC to the VM I want to be able to access the VM. The NIC is added to VLAN 153, but yet I am unable to ping the VLAN .1 IP that is setup on our Cisco 3750. The IP is properly setup on the Cisco 3750 because I'm able to ping the interface IP from other machines on the network. I'm guessing there must be an issue with the cabling. Any ideas?

• C# development with Mono and MonoDevelop

  In the past two years, I have been developing .NET from my MacBook by running Windows XP into VM Ware and more recently into Virtual Box from OS X. This way, I could install Visual Studio and be able to work seamlessly. But, this way of working has a major down side: it kills the battery of my laptop… I can easiely last for 3 hours if I stay in OS X, but can only last 45 min when XP is running. Recently, I gave MonoDevelop a try for developing Developer IT‘s tools and web site. While being way less complete then Visual Studio, it provides essentials tools when it comes to developping software. It works well with solutions and projects files created from Visual Studio, it has Intellisence (word completion), it can compile your code and can even target your .NET app to linux or unix. This tools can save me a lot of time and batteries! Although I could not only work with MonoDevelop, I find it way better than a simple text editor like Smultron. Thanks to Novell, we can now bring Microsoft technology to OS X.

• Trade-offs of local vs remote development workflows for a web development team

  We currently have SVN setup on a remote development server. Developers SSH into the server and develops on their sandbox environment on the server. Each one has a virtual host pointed to their sandbox so they can preview their changes via the web browser by connecting to developer-sandbox1.domain.com. This has worked well so far because the team is small and everyone uses computers with varying specs and OSs. I've heard some web shops are using a workflow that has the developers work off of a VM on their local machine and then finally push changes to the remote server that hosts SVN. The downside to this is that everyone will need to make sure their machine is powerful enough to run both the VM and all their development tools. This would also mean creating images that mirror the server environment (we use CentOS) and have them install it into their VMs. And this would mean creating new images every time there is an update to the server environment. What are some other trade-offs? Ultimately, why did you choose one workflow over the other?

• Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

  I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. See logs below, I may be missing something, also how is it possible to log on the bootstrap vm. Could I manual deploy, if so what do I need to do. • Git-based storage and publishing, infrastructure advice

  I wanted to get some advice on moving a system to "the cloud" ... specifically, I'm looking to move into some of Windows Azure's managed services, as right now I'm managing a VM. Basically, the system operates on some data stored in a github git repository. I'll describe the current architecture: Current system (all hosted on a single server): GitHub - configured with a webhook pointing at ... ASP.NET MVC application - to accept the webhook from git. It pushes a message onto ... Azure service bus Queue - which is drained by ... Windows Service - pulls the message from the queue and ... Fetches the latest data from the git repository (using GitLib2Sharp) onto the local disk and finally ... Operates on the data in git to produce a static HTML website hosted/served by IIS. The system works really well, actually ... but I would like to get out of the business of managing the VM, and move to using some combination of Azure web and worker roles. But because the system relies so heavily on the git repository on the local filesystem, I'm finding it difficult to figure out how to architect in the cloud. I know you can get file system access, so in theory I could just fetch the repository if there's nothing on disk ... but the performance/responsiveness of the system sort of depends on the repository being available and only having to fetch diffs, which is relatively quick. As opposed to periodically having to fetch the entire (somewhat large) git repository if the web or worker role was recycled, or something. So I would love some advice on how you would architect such a system :) Ultimately, the only real requirement is to be able to serve HTML content that's been produced from the contents of a git repository (in a relatively responsive manner, from a publishing perspective) ... please feel free to ask any clarifying questions if there's something I omitted. • Shared Folders in VirtualBox on Windows 7

  In my adventures with VirtualBox, my latest victory was in figuring out how to share folders between my host OS (Windows 7) and my virtual OS (Windows Server 2008).  Im familiar with VirtualPC and other such products, which allow you to share local folders with the VM.  When you do, they just show up in Windows Explorer and all is good.  However, after configuring shared folders in VirtualBox like so:   I couldnt see them anywhere within the machine. Where are Shared Folders in a VirtualBox VM? Fortunately a bit of searching yielded this article, which describes the problem nicely.  It turns out that there is a magic word you have to know, and that is the share name for the host OS: \\vboxsrv Once you know this, mapping shared folders is straightforward.  From Windows Explorer, click on the Map network drive option, and then map a drive to \\vboxsrv\YOURSHAREDFOLDER Like so: With that, its easy to share folders between the client and host OS using VirtualBox.  The reason I didnt simply use a standard network share to my host OS machine name is that both guest and host are in a VPN, and the VPN is over the Internet and in a different country, so when I went that route my files were (apparently) traveling from host to guest by way of the remote VPN network, rather than locally.  Using the Shared Folders feature dramatically sped up my ability to transfer files between Host and Guest machines. • How to better integrate a unix development environment into Windows

  I'm mostly a Windows user but I do most of my development (essentially web development) using unix tools and software. I've been going back and forth between using a dedicated lubuntu virtual machine on Virtualbox and using some tools directly in windows (msgit, python, django), but none of these approaches is entirely satisfactory. I'd like to hear of ways other devs use to better integrate a unix workflow into windows. For instance tighter integration between a linux and vm and windows. The vagrant demo showed how a VM could work off of a windows project folder and I found that nice. I'd like to hear of other tools and tips that would help mimic the workflow one can find on OS X (of course I understand that it cannot be as tightly integrated on Windows as it doesn't have the same unix underpinnings). PS: I have tried cygwin as well EDIT for clarifications about What I find lacking (thanks to axblount for pointing that out) : unix tools like msys et al do not work as well as their native unic counterparts. Many scripts, installers require further configuration or do not work at all. For instance getting virtualenvwrapper to work is not very straightforward. virtualbox: ideally I would like to use windows software (photoshop, sublime text 2) seamlessly with linux. I mostly use a FTP client atm to move over files edited on the windows side which is a tedious process.

• Ubuntu Server 12.04 as a router. Problem with DNS

  I have a virtualbox lab made up of 4 Windows 2008 R2 servers (DC/DNS,SQL,SHAREPOINT, EXCHANGE) that are configured with static ip addresses with NIC's attached to Internal network. Everything works. I had the requirement to execute some tests that also access external services available on the internet. To keep things clean and similar to the production environment I have installed another VM, with Ubuntu Server 12.04 64 bit and configured (I hope) to work as a router like described on this post. This VM has two network interfaces: first is Bridged with the host and is used as a WAN connection and the other one attached in the Internal Network with its own static IP address on the internal network subnet. But actually the Windows servers does not connect to the internet while the unix one connects. • Unable to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 on Virtualbox on Windows 7 Host

  I would like to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 in a virtual box on windows 7 host however I get a black screen after selecting to install Ubuntu i.e. right after choosing English language I have tried the 32bit and 64bit version desktop version, have also read thru some guides e.g. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox but I could not find any solution to fix this problem. BTW I have Ubuntu installed using Virtual PC (not running at the same time), also I have mac OS (mountain lion) installed using Virtual Box so I do not think it is a problem with the virtual box or windows 7 host. My VM configuration is with 1 core and 1 GB of ram using 20GB VDI; rest is default config. My hardware is Core i7 3770k / Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe / GSkill 32GB which I believe should be more than sufficient to run another VM. I have moved my user profile from SSD to HDD via junction however IMHO it should not matter. Has anyone else come across this problem and found a solution? Any help/thoughts on how to solve this would be very much appreciated.

• How do I work around sudo 'segmentation fault' on basic bash commands?

  I am sure the answers are out there, but alas there are too many answers (here and elsewhere) to other questions stopping me from finding them. I just encountered something substantially similar to what is described at the closed SO question, sudo : “segmentation fault” Ubuntu maverick [closed]. My team is using Ubuntu 11.04 on VMWare Workstation 8.0.4. We are doing development using c++, Xenomai, Qt, and Qt Creator. When we simulate our application on the virtual machine, we currently need to launch Qt Creator with sudo. My colleague mentioned today that he has been having issues where his workstation locks up and he needs to restart and that occasionally he has the issue that all sudo bash commands return "segmentation fault". I just ran our application in simulation mode. I was running Qt Creator under sudo and Qt Creator received the signal abort (if I recall). Afterward, every command executed with sudo from sudo qtcreator to sudo ls resulted in the message Segmentation fault. I clicked on the power widget to see if I could log out, but the system shut down straightaway without prompting. My understanding is that we run sudo because of a permissions issue with Xenomai and the VM as currently configured, but my colleague has a workaround for this. I expect that not running Qt Creator under sudo -- something that has always made me nervous -- will help contain this issue, but I find it troubling that this could happen and manifest as it does. Does anyone know what is happening? Any recommendations on how to work around this issue? This is happening often to I am trying tolobby for VM changes to be able to run the process without sudo.
