  • ASP.NET How expensive is it to call an Application Variable many times?

    The short of it is: Is it costly to check an Application Variable such as Application("WebAppName") more 10-20 times each time a page loads? Background: (feel free to critique) Some includes in my site contain many links and images which cannot use relative urls due to their inclusion in different paths. Hence these includes contain frequent instances of <img src="<%=Application("Webroot")%>images\image.gif"> Is it expensive to keep calling an Application variable like this? Should I just put the Application value in some local variable to use where needed? IMPORTANT NOTE: I need my webapp to run fine on a server whether it be in the root web ("/") or in a virtual subweb ("/app"). Thanks in advance for any wisdom shared.

Now am retrieving data from address page to main page by using a session variable which stores a data table of values. Two different Session variables are this way used for permanent and temporary addresses.. Using session variable degrades the performance i know..   • NULL ForeignKeyTo property in Subsonic 3/ASP.NET MVC?

    Issue: the primary key of the base table is named differently than the the key in the fk table. Subsonic 3 does not know how to handle that, which is fine, its beta. So I was going to change the Html.ControlFor logic to just grab the table and use the pkname from that: var fk = db.FindTable(col.ForeignKeyTo.FriendlyName); However the .ForeignKeyTo is null. Where in the templates does that ITable get populated?

    I want to include certain .js and .css files only on pages that need them. For example, my EditorTemplate DateTime.ascx needs files anytimec.js and anytimec.css. That template is applied whenever I use either the EditorFor or EditorForModel helper methods in a view for a model with a DateTime type value. I've put this condition into the <head> section of my master page.   • C#/.NET library for source code formatting, like the one used by Stack Overflow?

    I am writing a command line tool to convert Markdown text to html output, which seems easy enough. However, I am wondering how to get nice syntax coloring for embedded code blocks, like the one used by Stack Overflow. Does anyone know either: What library StackOverflow is using or if there's a library out there that I can easily reuse? Basically it would need to have some of the same "intelligence" found in the one that Stack Overflow uses, by basically doing a best-attempt at figuring out the language in use to pick the right keywords. Basically, what I want is for my own program to handle a block like the following: if (a == 0) return true; if (a == 1) return false; // fall-back Markdown Sharp, the library I'm using, by default outputs the above as a simple pre/code html block, with no syntax coloring. I'd like the same type of handling as the formatting on Stack Overflow does, the above contains blue "return" keywords for example. Or, hmm, after checking the source of this Stack Overflow page after adding the code example, I notice that it too is formatted like a simple pre/code block. Is it pure javascript-magic at works here, so perhaps there's no such library? If there's no library that will automagically determine a possible language by the keywords used, is there one that would work if I explicitly told it the language? Since this is "my" markdown-commandline-tool, I can easily add syntax if I need to.

    I have an ASP page with the following repeater: <asp:Repeater runat="server" ID="RegionRepeater" DataSourceID="SqlDataSourceRegions" EnableViewState="true"> <ItemTemplate> <tr> <td valign="top"> <b><%#Eval("description")%></b> <asp:HiddenField runat="server" ID="RegionID" Value='<%#Eval("region_id")%>'/> </td> <td> <asp:FileUpload ID="FileUpload" runat="server" Width="368px" /> </td> </tr> </ItemTemplate> </asp:Repeater> (The repeater is inside a Wizard, inside a content pane). The code behind is connected to the protected void Wizard1_NextButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) event. There are two items on the screen (two rows inside the table). However, when the code tries to read those items, the Items collection is empty! foreach(RepeaterItem region in RegionRepeater.Items) { // Never runs - the RegionRepeater.Items.Count = 0 FileUpload fileUpload = (FileUpload) region.FindControl("FileUpload"); String regionID = ((HiddenField)region.FindControl("RegionID")).Value; ...     Hey, I added a menu control to my page that is displayed vertically. I couldn't find a way to add spaces (I'd like about 5px.) between the menu items, so I just did something similar to this: <asp:Menu ID="Menu1" runat="server" BackColor="ActiveBorder"> <Items> <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/About.aspx" Text="One" /> </Items> </asp:Menu> <p></p> <asp:Menu ID="Menu2" runat="server" BackColor="ActiveBorder"> <Items> <asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Default.aspx" Text="Two" /> </Items> </asp:Menu> I just created multiple menu controls with a single menu item control in them, and placed a break between the menu controls. This seems very wrong to me, but I could not figure out another way. Also, this is a bit off subject, but is it okay to use empty paragraph tags as line breaks?(sometimes a br tag is too much) Thanks..

    I'm writing a fairly uncomplicated program which can "connect" to several different types of data sources including text files and various databases. I've decided to implement each of these connection types as a class inherited from an interface I called iConnection. So, for example, I have TextConnection, MySQLConnection, &c... as classes. In another static class I've got a dictionary with human-readable names for these connections as keys. For the value of each dictionary entry, I want the class itself. That way, I can do things like: newConnection = new dict[connectionTypeString](); Is there a way to do something like this? I'm fairly new to C# so I'd appreciate any help.

    At the moment I am using this code to check if the database is accessible: public bool IsDatabaseOnline(string con) { bool isConnected = false; SQLConnection connect = null; try { connect = new SQLConnection(con); connect.Open(); isConnected = true; } catch (Exception e) { isConnected = false; } finally { if (connect != null) connect.Close(); } return isConnected; } While this code works fine, there is a disadvantage. If the server is not online it spends about 4 full seconds trying to open the connection before deciding that it is not available. Is there a way to test the connection without trying to actually opening it and waiting for the timeout? Something like a database-equivalent of ping?

    Hi: I've just finished reading up on the CustomValidator control and I have a question. In the book I'm reading, it says that a CustomValidator doesn't need to have it's ControlToValidate property set and it gives a few examples of that usage. But in one example where ControlToValidate isn't used, the OnServerValidate function has a timer (5 seconds) that you need to beat by entering your 'answer' into a textbox. If it takes you longer than 5 seconds, the CustomValidator's error message pops up next to the textbox (it's like a timed question/answer game) . How did the CustomValidator know to place the message next to the textbox (there's no association between the two, that I know of)? I wanted to test this, so I put a couple more textboxes on the page and the error message always showed up next to the last textbox I placed on the page. Thanks.

    Hi all, I noticed that I cannot add stylesheets on any page. They must be added to the master page. I already have about 15 stylesheets in the master view, which seems like overkill, since only some of the pages use a certain stylesheet. I imagine I could reference the file via javascript (although, I can't think of how off the top of my head), but it would be really nice to not have to use any.
