• ASP.NET Cookies

    - by Aamir Hasan
    Cookies are domain specific and cannot be used across different network domains. The only domain that can read a cookie is the domain that sets it. It does not matter what domain name you set.Cookies are used to store small pieces of information on a client machine. A cookie can store only up to 4 KB of information. Generally cookies are used to store data which user types frequently such as user id and password to login to a site.The HttpCookie class defined in the System.Web namespace represents a browser cookie.Creating cookies (C#)Dim cookie As HttpCookie = New HttpCookie("UID")cookie.Value = "id"cookie.Expires = #3/30/2010#Response.Cookies.Add(cookie)cookie = New HttpCookie("username")cookie.Value = "username"cookie.Expires = #3/31/2010#Response.Cookies.Add(cookie)Creating cookies (VB.NET) HttpCookie cookie = Request.Cookies["Preferences"];      if (cookie == null)      {        cookie = new HttpCookie("Preferences");      }      cookie["Name"] = txtName.Text;      cookie.Expires = DateTime.Now.AddYears(1);      Response.Cookies.Add(cookie);Creating cookies (C#)    HttpCookie MyCookie = new HttpCookie("Background");    MyCookie.Value = "value";    Response.Cookies.Add(MyCookie);Reading cookies  (VB.NET)Dim cookieCols As New HttpCookieCollectioncookieCols = Request.CookiesDim str As String' Read and add all cookies to the list boxFor Each str In cookieColsListBox1.Items.Add("Value:" Request.Cookies(str).Value)Next Reading cookies (C#) ArrayList colCookies = new ArrayList();        for (int i = 0; i < Request.Cookies.Count; i++)            colCookies.Add(Request.Cookies[i]);        grdCookies.DataSource = colCookies;        grdCookies.DataBind();Deleting cookies (VB.NET)Dim cookieCols As New HttpCookieCollectioncookieCols = Request.CookiesDim str As String' Read and add all cookies to the list boxRequest.Cookies.Remove("PASS")Request.Cookies.Remove("UID")Deleting cookies (C#)string[] cookies = Request.Cookies.AllKeys;        foreach (string cookie in cookies)        {            ListBox1.Items.Add("Deleting " + cookie);            Response.Cookies[cookie].Expires = DateTime.Now.AddDays(-1);        }

  • Creating a multi-column rollover image gallery with HTML 5

    - by nikolaosk
    I know it has been a while since I blogged about HTML 5. I have two posts in this blog about HTML 5. You can find them here and here.I am creating a small content website (only text, images and a contact form) for a friend of mine.He wanted to create a rollover gallery. The whole concept is that we have some small thumbnails on a page, the user hovers over them and they appear enlarged on a designated container/placeholder on a page. I am trying not to use Javascript scripts when I am using effects on a web page and this is what I will be doing in this post. Well some people will say that HTML 5 is not supported in all browsers. That is true but most of the modern browsers support most of its recommendations. For people who still use IE6 some hacks must be devised.Well to be totally honest I cannot understand why anyone at this day and time is using IE 6.0.That really is beyond me.Well, the point of having a web browser is to be able to ENJOY the great experience that the WE? offers today. Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr. In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like. You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. You can download it here. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be ) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor. For the people who are not convinced yet that they should invest time and resources on becoming experts on HTML 5 I should point out that HTML 5 websites will be ranked higher than others. Search engines will be able to locate better the content of our site and its relevance/importance since it is using semantic tags. Let's move now to the actual hands-on example. In this case (since I am mad Liverpool supporter) I will create a rollover image gallery of Liverpool F.C legends. I create a folder in my desktop. I name it Liverpool Gallery. Then I create two subfolders in it, large-images (I place the large images in there) and thumbs (I place the small images in there). Then I create an empty .html file called LiverpoolLegends.html and an empty .css file called style.css.Please have a look at the HTML Markup that I typed in my fancy editor package below

Liverpool Legends Gallery

A page dedicated to Liverpool Legends

Do hover over the images with the mouse to see the full picture

It is very easy to follow the markup. Please have a look at the new doctype and the new semantic tag
. I have 3 columns and I place my images in there. There is a class called "large".I will use this class in my CSS code to hide the large image when the mouse is not on (hover) an image Make sure you validate your HTML 5 page in the validator found hereHave a look at the CSS code below that makes it all happen.img { border:none;}#column1 { position: absolute; top: 30; left: 100; }li { margin: 15px; list-style-type:none;}#column1 a img.large { position: absolute; top: 0; left:700px; visibility: hidden;}#column1 a:hover { background: white;}#column1 a:hover img.large { visibility:visible;}#column2 { position: absolute; top: 30; left: 195px; }li { margin: 5px; list-style-type:none;}#column2 a img.large { position: absolute; top: 0; left:510px; margin-left:0; visibility: hidden;}#column2 a:hover { background: white;}#column2 a:hover img.large { visibility:visible;}#column3 { position: absolute; top: 30; left: 400px; width:108px;}li { margin: 5px; list-style-type:none;}#column3 a img.large { width: 260px; height:260px; position: absolute; top: 0; left:315px; margin-left:0; visibility: hidden;}#column3 a:hover { background: white;}#column3 a:hover img.large { visibility:visible;}?n the first line of the CSS code I set the images to have no border. Then I place the first column in the page and then remove the bullets from the list elements. Then I use the large CSS class to create a position for the large image and hide it.Finally when the hover event takes place I make the image visible.I repeat the process for the next two columns. I have tested the page with IE 10 and the latest versions of Opera,Chrome and Firefox.Feel free to style your HTML 5 gallery any way you want through the magic of CSS.I did not bother adding background colors and borders because that was beyond the scope of this post. Hope it helps!!!!

  • Thinktecture.IdentityModel: WIF Support for WCF REST Services and OData

    - by Your DisplayName here!
    The latest drop of Thinktecture.IdentityModel includes plumbing and support for WIF, claims and tokens for WCF REST services and Data Services (aka OData). Cibrax has an alternative implementation that uses the WCF Rest Starter Kit. His recent post reminded me that I should finally “document” that part of our library. Features include: generic plumbing for all WebServiceHost derived WCF services support for SAML and SWT tokens support for ClaimsAuthenticationManager and ClaimsAuthorizationManager based solely on native WCF extensibility points (and WIF) This post walks you through the setup of an OData / WCF DataServices endpoint with token authentication and claims support. This sample is also included in the codeplex download along a similar sample for plain WCF REST services. Setting up the Data Service To prove the point I have created a simple WCF Data Service that renders the claims of the current client as an OData set. public class ClaimsData { public IQueryable<ViewClaim> Claims { get { return GetClaims().AsQueryable(); } } private List<ViewClaim> GetClaims() { var claims = new List<ViewClaim>(); var identity = Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity as IClaimsIdentity; int id = 0; identity.Claims.ToList().ForEach(claim => { claims.Add(new ViewClaim { Id = ++id, ClaimType = claim.ClaimType, Value = claim.Value, Issuer = claim.Issuer }); }); return claims; } } …and hooked that up with a read only data service: public class ClaimsDataService : DataService<ClaimsData> { public static void InitializeService(IDataServiceConfiguration config) { config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("*", EntitySetRights.AllRead); } } Enabling WIF Before you enable WIF, you should generate your client proxies. Afterwards the service will only accept requests with an access token – and svcutil does not support that. All the WIF magic is done in a special service authorization manager called the FederatedWebServiceAuthorizationManager. This code checks incoming calls to see if the Authorization HTTP header (or X-Authorization for environments where you are not allowed to set the authorization header) contains a token. This header must either start with SAML access_token= or WRAP access_token= (for SAML or SWT tokens respectively). For SAML validation, the plumbing uses the normal WIF configuration. For SWT you can either pass in a SimpleWebTokenRequirement or the SwtIssuer, SwtAudience and SwtSigningKey app settings are checked. If the token can be successfully validated, ClaimsAuthenticationManager and ClaimsAuthorizationManager are invoked and the IClaimsPrincipal gets established. The service authorization manager gets wired up by the FederatedWebServiceHostFactory: public class FederatedWebServiceHostFactory : WebServiceHostFactory { protected override ServiceHost CreateServiceHost( Type serviceType, Uri[] baseAddresses) { var host = base.CreateServiceHost(serviceType, baseAddresses); host.Authorization.ServiceAuthorizationManager = new FederatedWebServiceAuthorizationManager(); host.Authorization.PrincipalPermissionMode = PrincipalPermissionMode.Custom; return host; } } The last step is to set up the .svc file to use the service host factory (see the sample download). Calling the Service To call the service you need to somehow get a token. This is up to you. You can either use WSTrustChannelFactory (for the full CLR), WSTrustClient (Silverlight) or some other way to obtain a token. The sample also includes code to generate SWT tokens for testing – but the whole WRAP/SWT support will be subject of a separate post. I created some extensions methods for the most common web clients (WebClient, HttpWebRequest, DataServiceContext) that allow easy setting of the token, e.g.: public static void SetAccessToken(this DataServiceContext context, string token, string type, string headerName) { context.SendingRequest += (s, e) => { e.RequestHeaders[headerName] = GetHeader(token, type); }; } Making a query against the Data Service could look like this: static void CallService(string token, string type) { var data = new ClaimsData(new Uri("https://server/odata.svc/")); data.SetAccessToken(token, type); data.Claims.ToList().ForEach(c => Console.WriteLine("{0}\n {1}\n ({2})\n", c.ClaimType, c.Value, c.Issuer)); } HTH

  • Tricks and Optimizations for you Sitecore website

    - by amaniar
    When working with Sitecore there are some optimizations/configurations I usually repeat in order to make my app production ready. Following is a small list I have compiled from experience, Sitecore documentation, communicating with Sitecore Engineers etc. This is not supposed to be technically complete and might not be fit for all environments. Simple configurations that can make a difference: 1) Configure Sitecore Caches. This is the most straight forward and sure way of increasing the performance of your website. Data and item cache sizes (/databases/database/ [id=web] ) should be configured as needed. You may start with a smaller number and tune them as needed. <cacheSizes hint="setting"> <data>300MB</data> <items>300MB</items> <paths>5MB</paths> <standardValues>5MB</standardValues> </cacheSizes> Tune the html, registry etc cache sizes for your website. <cacheSizes> <sites> <website>
300MB
<registry>1MB</registry> <viewState>10MB</viewState> <xsl>5MB</xsl> </website> </sites> </cacheSizes> Tune the prefetch cache settings under the App_Config/Prefetch/ folder. Sample /App_Config/Prefetch/Web.Config: <configuration> <cacheSize>300MB</cacheSize>  <template desc="mytemplate">{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}</template>
{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX }
  <children desc="childitems">{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}</children> </configuration> Break your page into sublayouts so you may cache most of them. Read the caching configuration reference: http://sdn.sitecore.net/upload/sitecore6/sc62keywords/cache_configuration_reference_a4.pdf   2) Disable Analytics for the Shell Site <site name="shell" virtualFolder="/sitecore/shell" physicalFolder="/sitecore/shell" rootPath="/sitecore/content" startItem="/home" language="en" database="core" domain="sitecore" loginPage="/sitecore/login" content="master" contentStartItem="/Home" enableWorkflow="true" enableAnalytics="false" xmlControlPage="/sitecore/shell/default.aspx" browserTitle="Sitecore" htmlCacheSize="2MB" registryCacheSize="3MB" viewStateCacheSize="200KB" xslCacheSize="5MB" />   3) Increase the Check Interval for the MemoryMonitorHook so it doesn’t run every 5 seconds (default). <hook type="Sitecore.Diagnostics.MemoryMonitorHook, Sitecore.Kernel"> 800MB 00:05:00 00:01:00 <ClearCaches>false</ClearCaches> <GarbageCollect>false</GarbageCollect> <AdjustLoadFactor>false</AdjustLoadFactor> </hook>   4) Set Analytics.PeformLookup (Sitecore.Analytics.config) to false if your environment doesn’t have access to the internet or you don’t intend to use reverse DNS lookup. <setting name="Analytics.PerformLookup" value="false" />   5) Set the value of the “Media.MediaLinkPrefix” setting to “-/media”: <setting name="Media.MediaLinkPrefix" value="-/media" /> Add the following line to the customHandlers section: <customHandlers> <handler trigger="-/media/" handler="sitecore_media.ashx" /> <handler trigger="~/media/" handler="sitecore_media.ashx" /> <handler trigger="~/api/" handler="sitecore_api.ashx" /> <handler trigger="~/xaml/" handler="sitecore_xaml.ashx" /> <handler trigger="~/icon/" handler="sitecore_icon.ashx" /> <handler trigger="~/feed/" handler="sitecore_feed.ashx" /> </customHandlers> Link: http://squad.jpkeisala.com/2011/10/sitecore-media-library-performance-optimization-checklist/   6) Performance counters should be disabled in production if not being monitored <setting name="Counters.Enabled" value="false" />   7) Disable Item/Memory/Timing threshold warnings. Due to the nature of this component, it brings no value in production.   <url-pattern>/</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> <resource-ref>
Oracle Datasource example
<res-ref-name>jdbc/ora1</res-ref-name> <res-type>org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource</res-type> <res-auth>Container</res-auth> </resource-ref> And I have a Spring "servlet-context.xml" where JNDI is used to map the data source object provided by the connection pool to a Spring bean with the ID of "dataSource": <jee:jndi-lookup id="dataSource" jndi-name="java:comp/env/jdbc/ora1" resource-ref="true" /> Here's the question: Where do I trap the case where the database cannot be accessed for whatever reason? I don't want the user to see a yard-and-a-half of Java stack trace in their browser, rather a nicer message that tells them there is a database problem etc. It seems that my app tries to configure the "dataSource" bean (in "servlet-context.xml") before any code has tested it can actually provide a dataSource object from the pool?! Maybe I'm not fully understanding exactly what is going on in these stages of the app firing up ... Thanks for any advice!

  • Configuring JPA Primary key sequence generators

    - by pachunoori.vinay.kumar(at)oracle.com
    This article describes the JPA feature of generating and assigning the unique sequence numbers to JPA entity .This article provides information on jpa sequence generator annotations and its usage. UseCase Description Adding a new Employee to the organization using Employee form should assign unique employee Id. Following description provides the detailed steps to implement the generation of unique employee numbers using JPA generators feature Steps to configure JPA Generators 1.Generate Employee Entity using "Entities from Table Wizard". View image2.Create a Database Connection and select the table "Employee" for which entity will be generated and Finish the wizards with default selections. View image 3.Select the offline database sources-Schema-create a Sequence object or you can copy to offline db from online database connection. View image 4.Open the persistence.xml in application navigator and select the Entity "Employee" in structure view and select the tab "Generators" in flat editor. 5.In the Sequence Generator section, enter name of sequence "InvSeq" and select the sequence from drop down list created in step3. View image 6.Expand the Employees in structure view and select EmployeeId and select the "Primary Key Generation" tab.7.In the Generated value section, select the "Use Generated value" check box ,select the strategy as "Sequence" and select the Generator as "InvSeq" defined step 4. View image Following annotations gets added for the JPA generator configured in JDeveloper for an entity To use a specific named sequence object (whether it is generated by schema generation or already exists in the database) you must define a sequence generator using a @SequenceGenerator annotation. Provide a unique label as the name for the sequence generator and refer the name in the @GeneratedValue annotation along with generation strategy For example, see the below Employee Entity sample code configured for sequence generation. EMPLOYEE_ID is the primary key and is configured for auto generation of sequence numbers. EMPLOYEE_SEQ is the sequence object exist in database. This sequence is configured for generating the sequence numbers and assign the value as primary key to Employee_id column in Employee table. @SequenceGenerator(name="InvSeq", sequenceName = "EMPLOYEE_SEQ") @Entity public class Employee implements Serializable { @Id @Column(name="EMPLOYEE_ID", nullable = false) @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator="InvSeq") private Long employeeId; } @SequenceGenerator @GeneratedValue @SequenceGenerator - will define the sequence generator based on a database sequence object Usage: @SequenceGenerator(name="SequenceGenerator", sequenceName = "EMPLOYEE_SEQ") @GeneratedValue - Will define the generation strategy and refers the sequence generator Usage: @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator="name of the Sequence generator defined in @SequenceGenerator")

  • How to set conditional activation to taskflows?

    - by shantala.sankeshwar(at)oracle.com
    This article describes implementing conditional activation to taskflows.Use Case Description Suppose we have a taskflow dropped as region on a page & this region is enclosed in a popup .By default when the page is loaded the respective region also gets loaded.Hence a region model needs to provide a viewId whenever one is requested. A consequence of this is the TaskFlowRegionModel always has to initialize its task flow and execute the task flow's default activity in order to determine a viewId, even if the region is not visible on the page. This can lead to unnecessary performance overhead of executing task flow to generate viewIds for regions that are never visible. In order to increase the performance,we need to set the taskflow bindings activation property to 'conditional'.Below described is a simple usecase that shows how exactly we can set the conditional activations to taskflow bindings.Steps:1.Create an ADF Fusion web ApplicationView image 2.Create Business components for Emp tableView image3.Create a view criteria where deptno=:some_bind_variableView image4.Generate EmpViewImpl.java file & write the below code. Then expose this to client interface. public void filterEmpRecords(Number deptNo){ // Code to filter the deptnos ensureVariableManager().setVariableValue("some_bind_variable", deptNo); this.applyViewCriteria(this.getViewCriteria("EmpViewCriteria")); this.executeQuery(); }5.Create an ADF Taskflow with page fragements & drop the above method on the taskflow6.Also drop the view activity(showEmp.jsff) .Define control flow case from the above method activity to the view activity.Set the method activity as default activityView image7.Create main.jspx page & drop the above taskflow as region on this pageView image8.Surround the region with the dialog & surround the dialog with the popup(id is Popup1)9.Drop the commandButton on the above page & insert af:showPopupBehavior inside the commandButton:<af:commandButton text="show popup" id="cb1"><af:showPopupBehavior popupId="::Popup1"/></af:commandButton>10.Now if we execute this main page ,we will notice that the method action gets called even before the popup is launched. We can avoid this this by setting the activation property of the taskflow to conditional11.Goto the bindings of the above main page & select the taskflow binding ,set its activation property to 'conditional' & active property to Boolean value #{Somebean.popupVisible}.By default its value should be false.View image12.We need to set the above Boolean value to true only when the popup is launched. This can be achieved by inserting setPropertyListener inside the popup:<af:setPropertyListener from="true" to="#{Somebean.popupVisible}" type="popupFetch"/>13.Now if we run the page,we will notice that the method action is not called & only when we click on 'show popup' button the method action gets called.

  • Wrapping ASP.NET Client Callbacks

    - by Ricardo Peres
    Client Callbacks are probably the less known (and I dare say, less loved) of all the AJAX options in ASP.NET, which also include the UpdatePanel, Page Methods and Web Services. The reason for that, I believe, is it’s relative complexity: Get a reference to a JavaScript function; Dynamically register function that calls the above reference; Have a JavaScript handler call the registered function. However, it has some the nice advantage of being self-contained, that is, doesn’t need additional files, such as web services, JavaScript libraries, etc, or static methods declared on a page, or any kind of attributes. So, here’s what I want to do: Have a DOM element which exposes a method that is executed server side, passing it a string and returning a string; Have a server-side event that handles the client-side call; Have two client-side user-supplied callback functions for handling the success and error results. I’m going to develop a custom control without user interface that does the registration of the client JavaScript method as well as a server-side event that can be hooked by some handler on a page. My markup will look like this: 1: 2: <my:CallbackControl runat="server" ID="callback" SendAllData="true" OnCallback="OnCallback"/> The control itself looks like this: 1: public class CallbackControl : Control, ICallbackEventHandler 2: { 3: #region Public constructor 4: public CallbackControl() 5: { 6: this.SendAllData = false; 7: this.Async = true; 8: } 9: #endregion 10: 11: #region Public properties and events 12: public event EventHandler<CallbackEventArgs> Callback; 13: 14: [DefaultValue(true)] 15: public Boolean Async 16: { 17: get; 18: set; 19: } 20: 21: [DefaultValue(false)] 22: public Boolean SendAllData 23: { 24: get; 25: set; 26: } 27: 28: #endregion 29: 30: #region Protected override methods 31: 32: protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) 33: { 34: writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Id, this.ClientID); 35: writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Span); 36: 37: base.Render(writer); 38: 39: writer.RenderEndTag(); 40: } 41: 42: protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) 43: { 44: String reference = this.Page.ClientScript.GetCallbackEventReference(this, "arg", "onCallbackSuccess", "context", "onCallbackError", this.Async); 45: String script = String.Concat("\ndocument.getElementById('", this.ClientID, "').callback = function(arg, context, onCallbackSuccess, onCallbackError){", ((this.SendAllData == true) ? "__theFormPostCollection.length = 0; __theFormPostData = ''; WebForm_InitCallback(); " : String.Empty), reference, ";};\n"); 46: 47: this.Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), String.Concat("callback", this.ClientID), script, true); 48: 49: base.OnInit(e); 50: } 51: 52: #endregion 53: 54: #region Protected virtual methods 55: protected virtual void OnCallback(CallbackEventArgs args) 56: { 57: EventHandler<CallbackEventArgs> handler = this.Callback; 58: 59: if (handler != null) 60: { 61: handler(this, args); 62: } 63: } 64: 65: #endregion 66: 67: #region ICallbackEventHandler Members 68: 69: String ICallbackEventHandler.GetCallbackResult() 70: { 71: CallbackEventArgs args = new CallbackEventArgs(this.Context.Items["Data"] as String); 72: 73: this.OnCallback(args); 74: 75: return (args.Result); 76: } 77: 78: void ICallbackEventHandler.RaiseCallbackEvent(String eventArgument) 79: { 80: this.Context.Items["Data"] = eventArgument; 81: } 82: 83: #endregion 84: } And the event argument class: 1: [Serializable] 2: public class CallbackEventArgs : EventArgs 3: { 4: public CallbackEventArgs(String argument) 5: { 6: this.Argument = argument; 7: this.Result = String.Empty; 8: } 9: 10: public String Argument 11: { 12: get; 13: private set; 14: } 15: 16: public String Result 17: { 18: get; 19: set; 20: } 21: } You will notice two properties on the CallbackControl: Async: indicates if the call should be made asynchronously or synchronously (the default); SendAllData: indicates if the callback call will include the view and control state of all of the controls on the page, so that, on the server side, they will have their properties set when the Callback event is fired. The CallbackEventArgs class exposes two properties: Argument: the read-only argument passed to the client-side function; Result: the result to return to the client-side callback function, set from the Callback event handler. An example of an handler for the Callback event would be: 1: protected void OnCallback(Object sender, CallbackEventArgs e) 2: { 3: e.Result = String.Join(String.Empty, e.Argument.Reverse()); 4: } Finally, in order to fire the Callback event from the client, you only need this: 1: 2: The syntax of the callback function is: arg: some string argument; context: some context that will be passed to the callback functions (success or failure); callbackSuccessFunction: some function that will be called when the callback succeeds; callbackFailureFunction: some function that will be called if the callback fails for some reason. Give it a try and see if it helps!

    I got this error when I deploy a new content type into SharePoint2010.This error message is not very helpful after a few hours of hard work, I find out there is a dash(-) in my contentID.It happen when I generate GUID using visual studio tool and copy it to the ID and forgot to delete the dash. After correct this, I press deploy again, it works like charm. If you got this error double-check your contentID. If you are not quite sure what is a Valid contentTypeID, check the MSDN documentation here.

  • SQL SERVER – Online Index Rebuilding Index Improvement in SQL Server 2012

    - by pinaldave
    Have you ever faced situation when you see something working and you feel it should not be working? Well, I had similar moments few days ago. I know that SQL Server 2008 supports online indexing. However, I also know that I cannot rebuild index ONLINE if I have used VARCHAR(MAX), NVARCHAR(MAX) or few other data types. While I held my belief very strongly I came across situation, where I had to go online and do little bit reading from Book Online. Here is the similar example. First of all – run following code in SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2. USE TempDB GO CREATE TABLE TestTable (ID INT, FirstCol NVARCHAR(10), SecondCol NVARCHAR(MAX)) GO CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX [IX_TestTable] ON TestTable (ID) GO CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_TestTable_Cols] ON TestTable (FirstCol) INCLUDE (SecondCol) GO USE [tempdb] GO ALTER INDEX [IX_TestTable_Cols] ON [dbo].[TestTable] REBUILD WITH (ONLINE = ON) GO DROP TABLE TestTable GO Now run the same code in SQL Server 2012 version. Observe the difference between both of the execution. You will be get following resultset. In SQL Server 2008/R2 it will throw following error: Msg 2725, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 An online operation cannot be performed for index ‘IX_TestTable_Cols’ because the index contains column ‘SecondCol’ of data type text, ntext, image, varchar(max), nvarchar(max), varbinary(max), xml, or large CLR type. For a non-clustered index, the column could be an include column of the index. For a clustered index, the column could be any column of the table. If DROP_EXISTING is used, the column could be part of a new or old index. The operation must be performed offline. In SQL Server 2012 it will run successfully and will not throw any error. Command(s) completed successfully. I always thought it will throw an error if there is VARCHAR(MAX) or NVARCHAR(MAX) used in table schema definition. When I saw this result it was clear to me that it will be for sure not bug enhancement in SQL Server 2012. For matter for the fact, I always wanted this feature to be added in SQL Server Engine as this will enable ONLINE Index Rebuilding for mission critical tables which needs to be always online. I quickly searched online and landed on Jacob Sebastian’s blog where he has blogged about it as well. Well, is there any other new feature in SQL Server 2012 which gave you good surprise? • SOCharts: Charts by Tags

    - by abhin4v
    Screenshot I created this small app as a weekend hack. It shows the reputations, upvotes, downvotes and accepted answers for a user against the tags for the answers. About I wanted to know how may upvotes I was away from getting the bronze badge for the clojure tag. But I could not find any straightforward way of doing that. So I wrote this app (in Clojure, of course). The SO API is used for the data and the charts are created using the Google Chart API. The charts are opened in the default browser. License Licensed under EPL 1.0. Download If you have Clojure and Leiningen installed, you can simply get the code from https://gist.github.com/725331, save it as socharts.clj and then run lein repl -e "(load \"socharts\")(refer 'socharts.socharts)(-main)" for launching the Swing UI If you don't have Clojure installed, but have Java then download the standalone jar from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5247/socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar and run it as javaw -jar socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar Once the UI is launched, just type your user id in the input box and press <ENTER>. It will take some time to download the data from the SO API (the progress bar shows the download progress) and then it will open the charts in your default browser. You can also run it as a command line app by running lein repl -e "(load \"socharts\")(refer 'socharts.socharts)(-main <userid>)" or java -jar socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar <userid> where you replace <userid> with your user id. Be warned that because of a missing feature in the SO API, it will fetch the data for each question you have answered. So the maximum limit is 10000 answers (the SO API call limit). Platform All platforms with Java 1.6. Contact You can reach me at abhinav [at] abhinavsarkar [dot] net. Please report bugs/comments/suggestions as answers to this post. Code Code was written in Clojure with the UI in Swing. It is available at https://gist.github.com/725331. It's a public gist so your can fork it if you like to do some changes.

  • How to launch LOV and Date dialogs using the keyboard

The JavaScript shown below can be used with an af:clientListener tag on af:inputListOfValues or af:inputDate. At runtime, the JavaScript code determines the component type it is executed on and either opens the LOV dialog or the input Date popup. <af:resource type="javascript"> /** * function to launch dialog if cursor is in LOV or * input date field * @param evt argument to capture the AdfUIInputEvent object */ function launchPopUpUsingF8(evt) { var component = evt.getSource(); if (evt.getKeyCode() == AdfKeyStroke.F8_KEY) { //check for input LOV component if (component.getTypeName() == 'AdfRichInputListOfValues') { AdfLaunchPopupEvent.queue(component, true); //event is handled on the client. Server does not need //to be notified evt.cancel(); } //check for input Date component else if (component.getTypeName() == 'AdfRichInputDate') { //the inputDate af:popup component ID always is ::pop var popupClientId = component.getAbsoluteLocator() + '::pop'; var popup = component.findComponent(popupClientId); var hints = {align : AdfRichPopup.ALIGN_END_AFTER, alignId : component.getAbsoluteLocator()}; popup.show(hints); //event is handled on the client. Server does not need //to be notified evt.cancel(); } } } </af:resource> The af:clientListener that calls the JavaScript is added as shown below. <af:inputDate label="Label 1" id="id1"> <af:clientListener method="launchPopUpUsingF8" type="keyDown"/> </af:inputDate> As you may have noticed, the call to open the popup is different for the af:inputListOfValues and the af:inputDate. For the list of values component, an ADF Faces AdfLaunchPopupEvent is queued with the LOV component passed s an argument. Launching the input date popup is a bit more complicate and requires you to lookup the implicit popup dialog and to open it manually. Because the popup is opened manually using the show() method on the af:popup component, the alignment of the dialog also needs to be handled manually. For this, the popup component specifies alignment hints, that for the ALIGN_END_AFTER hint aligns the dialog at the end and below the date component. The align Id hint specifies the component the dialog is relatively positioned to, which of course should be the input date field. The ADF Faces JavaScript API and how to use it is further explained in the Using JavaScript in ADF Faces Rich Client Applications whitepaper available from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/jdev/1-2011-javascript-302460.pdf An ADF Insider recording about JavaScript in ADF Faces can be watched from here http://download.oracle.com/otn_hosted_doc/jdeveloper/11gdemos/adf-insider-javascript/adf-insider-javascript.html
