  • Add the 2D Version of the New Unity Interface to Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04

    Is your computer or virtualization software unable to display the new 3D version of the Unity Interface in Ubuntu? Now you can access and enjoy the 2D version with just a little PPA magic added to your system! To add the new PPA open the Ubuntu Software Center, go to the Edit Menu, and select Software Sources. Access the Other Software Tab in the Software Sources Window and add the first of the PPAs shown below (outlined in red). The second PPA will be automatically added to your system. Once you have the new PPAs set up, go back to the Ubuntu Software Center and click on the PPA listing for Unity 2D on the left (highlighted with red in the image). Scroll down until you find the listing for “Unity interface for non-accelerated graphics cards – unity-2d” and click Install. Once that is done you are ready to go to System, Administration, and then select Login Screen in your Ubuntu Menu. Unlock the screen and select Unity 2D as the default session from the drop-down list as shown here. Log out and then back in to start enjoying that Unity 2D goodness! Here is how things will look when you click on the Ubuntu Menu Icon. Select the category that you would like to start with (such as Web) and get ready to have fun.   • Ubuntu 11.04:Add right click menu as "Compress as ZIP"

    Step 1: I wanted to Add a menu as "Compress as ZIP" on right click. I know i can use change default compress format as "ZIP" using gconf-editor. But I wanted to add a new Menu Item for Compressing as ZIP without opening any other option dialog. Step 2: I wanted to Compress a file as ZIP and Rename it as a "epub". Please let me know is it possible to zip&rename by adding single menu Item? Im using Ubuntu 11.04 and Installed "Nautilus-Action-Configurations", but unsuccessful. N.B. I have read this Ask Ubuntu Q&A; I dont want to open a new window to choose me the format. It should be straight away saved as ZIP.

  • Identity Propagation for Web Service - 11g

    I came across this post from Beimond on how to do identity propagation using OWSM.As I have mentioned in the past here, here and here - Beimond has a number of excellent posts on OWSM. However I found one part of his comment puzzling. I quote: "OWSM allows you to pass on the identity of the authenticated user to your OWSM protected web service ( thanks to OPSS ), this username can then be used by your service. This will work on one or between different WebLogic domains. Off course when you don't want to use OWSM you can always use Oracle Access Manager OAM which can do the same." The sentence in red highlights the issue i find puzzling. In fact I just discussed this particular topic recently here. So let me try and clarify on a few points: a) OAM is used for Web SSO. b) OWSM is used for securing Web Services. You cannot do identity propagation using OAM for Web Services. c) You use SAML to do identity propagation across Web Services. OAM also supports SAML - but that is the browser profile of SAML relevant in the context of Web SSO and is not related to the SAML Token Profile defined as part of the WS-Security spec.

  • Windows Service with Logon a user

    I have a service running in a box with Windows XP and a box of Server (2003). There is one service running in autmactic mode. If I set the log on with a local user, the service will stop running if the user logs off the account from the Windows? In other words, in order to keep the service running, have I to keep the user as login mode? I understand that the service can be set as local system which will not need any one to login as long as the box is powered on. However, the service I need to run has to be running as a local user with the required permissions. The problem I have right now is that the box may reboot itself. If that happens, no one is logged in yet until some one has to log in as the required user. I want to make sure if the required user has to be as a log on user first. If that's the case, any suggestion to deal with unexpected reboot issue?

  • How to use the unit of work and repository patterns in a service oriented enviroment

    I've created an application framework using the unit of work and repository patterns for it's data layer. Data consumer layers such as presentation depend on the data layer design. For example a CRUD abstract form has a dependency to a repository (IRepository). This architecture works like a charm in client/server environments (Ex. a WPF application and a SQL Server). But I'm looking for a good pattern to change or reuse this architecture for a service oriented environment. Of course I have some ideas: Idea 1: The "Adapter" design pattern Keep the current architecture and create a new unit of work and repository implementation which can work with a service instead of the ORM. Data layer consumers are loosely coupled to the data layer so it's possible but the problem is about the unit of work; I have to create a context which tracks the objects state at the client side and sends the changes to the server side on calling the "Commit" (Something that I think the RIA has done for Silverlight). Here the diagram: ----------- CLIENT----------- | ------------------ SERVER ---------------------- [ UI ] -> [ UoW/Repository ] ---> [ Web Services ] -> [ UoW/Repository ] -> [DB] Idea 2: Add another layer Add another layer (let say "local services" or "data provider"), then put it between the data layer (unit of work and repository) and the data consumer layers (like UI). Then I have to rewrite the consumer classes (CRUD and other classes which are dependent to IRepository) to depend on another interface.     I install ubuntu 12.04 in my notebook and I use c++. I want to use c++11,so I want to upgrade my gcc to gcc4.7. I do like this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7 sudo apt-get install g++-4.7 but when I run "sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7", it just can find gcc-4.7-base not gcc-4.7, and when I run "sudo apt-get install g++-4.7", it can find nothing... Today, I want to install the "bumblebee" and do like this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia sudo reboot but when I run "sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia", it tells me the packages can't be find. University of Minnesota For an inside look at how DBaaS is working in the real world, it’s worth checking into the University of Minnesota’s database hotel.  With more than 50,000 students, the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis is one of the largest universities in the United States. The university’s centralized IT group not only has to support all those students but also must provide support and services to more than 40 departments and colleges within the university. They have two Exadata Database Machine X2-2 half-rack systems from Oracle, with four database nodes each and roughly 30 terabytes of usable disk space for each of the Oracle Exadata systems. The university is using Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) for high availability and the Data Guard feature of Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition, for disaster recovery capabilities. The deployment has been live in production since May 2011.   • TFS API Add Favorites programmatically

    01 – What are we trying to achieve? In this blog post I’ll be showing you how to add work item queries as favorites, it is also possible to use the same technique to add build definition as favorites. Once a shared query or build definition has been added as favorite it will show up on the team web access.  In this blog post I’ll be showing you a work around in the absence of a proper API how you can add queries to team favorites. 02 – Disclaimer There is no official API for adding favorites programmatically. In the work around below I am using the Identity service to store this data in a property bag which is used during display of favorites on the team web site. This uses an internal data structure that could change over time, there is no guarantee about the key names or content of the values. What is shown below is a workaround for a missing API. 03 – Concept There is no direct API support for favorites, but you could work around it using the identity service in TFS.  Favorites are stored in the property bag associated with the TeamFoundationIdentity (either the ‘team’ identity or the users identity depending on if these are ‘team’ or ‘my’ favorites).  The data is stored as json in the property bag of the identity, the key being prefixed by ‘Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Framework.Server.IdentityFavorites’.   • Using Computer Management (MMC) with the Solaris CIFS Service (August 25, 2009)

    One of our goals for the Solaris CIFS Service is to provide seamless Windows interoperability: not just to deliver ubiquitous, multi-protocol file sharing, which is obviously a major part of this project, but to support Windows services at a fundamental level.  It's an ongoing mission and our latest update includes support for Windows remote management. Remote management is extremely important to Windows administrators and one of the mainstay tools is Computer Management. Computer Management is a Windows administration application, actually a collection of Microsoft Management Console (MMC) tools, that can be used to configure, monitor and manage local and remote services and resources.  The MMC is an extensible framework of registered components, known as snap-ins, which allows Computer Management to provide comprehensive management features for both the local system and remote systems on the network. Supported Computer Management features include: Share ManagementSupport for share management is relatively complete.  You can create, delete, list and configure shares.  It's not yet possible to change the maximum allowed or number of users properties but other properties, including the Share Permissions, can be managed via the MMC. Users, Groups and ConnectionsYou can view local SMB users and groups, monitor user connections and see the list of open files. If necessary, you can also disconnect users and/or close files. ServicesYou can view the SMF services running on an OpenSolaris system.  This is a read-only view - we don't support service management (the ability to start or stop) SMF services from Computer Management (yet). To ensure that only the appropriate users have access to administrative operations there are some access restrictions on these remote management features. Regular users can: List shares Only members of the Administrators or Power Users groups can: Manage shares List connections Only members of the Administrators group can: List open files and close files Disconnect users View SMF services View the EventLog Here's a screenshot when I was using Computer Management and Server Manager (another Windows remote management application) on Windows XP to view some open files on an OpenSolaris system to prepare a slide presentation on MMC support.

  • How granular should a command be in a CQ[R]S model?

    I'm considering a project to migrate part of our WCF-based SOA over to a service bus model (probably nServiceBus) and using some basic pub-sub to achieve Command-Query Separation. I'm not new to SOA, or even to service bus models, but I confess that until recently my concept of "separation" was limited to run-of-the-mill database mirroring and replication. Still, I'm attracted to the idea because it seems to provide all the benefits of an eventually-consistent system while sidestepping many of the obvious drawbacks (most notably the lack of proper transactional support). I've read a lot on the subject from Udi Dahan who is basically the guru on ESB architectures (at least in the Microsoft world), but one thing he says really puzzles me: As we get larger entities with more fields on them, we also get more actors working with those same entities, and the higher the likelihood that something will touch some attribute of them at any given time, increasing the number of concurrency conflicts. [...] A core element of CQRS is rethinking the design of the user interface to enable us to capture our users’ intent such that making a customer preferred is a different unit of work for the user than indicating that the customer has moved or that they’ve gotten married. Using an Excel-like UI for data changes doesn’t capture intent, as we saw above. -- Udi Dahan, Clarified CQRS From the perspective described in the quotation, it's hard to argue with that logic. But it seems to go against the grain with respect to SOAs. An SOA (and really services in general) are supposed to deal with coarse-grained messages so as to minimize network chatter - among many other benefits. I realize that network chatter is less of an issue when you've got highly-distributed systems with good message queuing and none of the baggage of RPC, but it doesn't seem wise to dismiss the issue entirely. Udi almost seems to be saying that every attribute change (i.e. field update) ought to be its own command, which is hard to imagine in the context of one user potentially updating hundreds or thousands of combined entities and attributes as it often is with a traditional web service. One batch update in SQL Server may take a fraction of a second given a good highly-parameterized query, table-valued parameter or bulk insert to a staging table; processing all of these updates one at a time is slow, slow, slow, and OLTP database hardware is the most expensive of all to scale up/out. Is there some way to reconcile these competing concerns? Am I thinking about it the wrong way? Does this problem have a well-known solution in the CQS/ESB world? If not, then how does one decide what the "right level" of granularity in a Command should be? Is there some "standard" one can use as a starting point - sort of like 3NF in databases - and only deviate when careful profiling suggests a potentially significant performance benefit? Or is this possibly one of those things that, despite several strong opinions being expressed by various experts, is really just a matter of opinion?

  • How to Add a Taskbar to the Desktop in Ubuntu 14.04

    If you’ve switched to Ubuntu from Windows, it may take some time to get used to the new and different interface. However, you can easily incorporate a familiar Windows feature, the Taskbar, into Ubuntu to make the transition easier. A tool called Tint2 provides a bar at the bottom of the Ubuntu Desktop that resembles the Windows Taskbar. We will show you how to install it and make it start every time you log into Ubuntu. NOTE: When we say to type something in this article and there are quotes around the text, DO NOT type the quotes, unless we specify otherwise. Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open a Terminal window. To install Tint2, type the following line at the prompt and press Enter. sudo apt-get install tint2 Type your password at the prompt and press Enter. The progress of the installation displays and then a message displays saying how much disk space will be used. When asked if you want to continue, type a “y” and press Enter. When the installation has finished, close the Terminal window by typing “exit” at the prompt and pressing Enter. Click the Search button at the top of the Unity bar. Start typing “startup applications” in the Search box. Items that match what you type start displaying below the Search box. When the Startup Applications tool displays, click the icon to open it. On the Startup Applications Preferences window, click Add. On the Add Startup Program dialog box, enter a name for the startup application. This name displays in the list on the Startup Applications Preferences window. Type “tint2” in the Command edit box, enter a description in the Comment edit box, if desired, and click Add. Tint2 is added as a startup program and will start every time you log into Ubuntu. Click Close to close the Startup Applications Preferences window. Log out and log back in to make the Taskbar available on the desktop. You do not need to reboot the computer for this change to take effect. Now, when you minimize a program, an icon for it displays on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, just like the Taskbar in Windows. If you decide that you don’t want the Taskbar to display every time you log into Ubuntu, you can uncheck the Tint2 startup program on the Startup Applications Preferences window. You don’t need to delete it from the list.

  • Identifying Service Error in Fedora 16

    How do you find the cause of a failed service start in Fedora 16? The new systemctl command in Fedora 16 seems to horribly obscure any useful logging info. [root@host ~]# systemctl start httpd.service Job failed. See system logs and 'systemctl status' for details. [root@host ~]# systemctl status httpd.service httpd.service - The Apache HTTP Server (prefork MPM) Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/httpd.service; enabled) Active: failed since Thu, 21 Jun 2012 16:26:56 -0400; 1min 23s ago Process: 2119 ExecStop=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 2215 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE) Main PID: 1062 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/httpd.service So the first command fails...and it tells me to run another command...which simply tells me that the command returned an error code. Where's the actual error? Even more frustrating is nothing seems to have been written to the logs: [root@host ~]# ls -lah /var/log/httpd/ total 8.0K drwx------. 2 root root 4.0K Jun 21 16:19 . drwxr-xr-x. 21 root root 4.0K Jun 20 16:33 .. -rw-r----- 1 root root 0 Jun 21 16:19 modsec_audit.log -rw-r----- 1 root root 0 Jun 21 16:19 modsec_debug.log

  • What are options for 3rd Party Centralized Software Settings Management?

    I am an architect in an enterprise looking to build a SaaS solution. Our products are distributed over many different deployable containers, Web Services, Web UI's, etc. I am looking for some open-source or 3rd party software solution to manage the settings of our application. These would be similar to the settings you might find in Word or Eclipse or Visual Studio. The settings would control various behaviors and features of the product. (Probably not settings like which database to connect to but more like, should I show line numbers on the page or not by default..). Ideally, we would be able to store values for different dimensions (by tenant, by user, by application environment... ) Because we have so many different deployables, I am looking for a centralized solution that can provide a web service that each of the deployables can get their individual settings from. Does anyone know of a centralized service providing this sort of features or give me some help in searching for an alternative to rolling our own?

  • Add rules (filters) to ftp programs to avoid uploading certain files/folders

    i use Filezilla as my ftp client, but this question goes to any other client that could be useful. Can i (in any client) add rules (filters) to an ftp program to avoid upload of certain files or folders? For example: Expression web creates those annoying _vti_cnf folders, or, certain folders in which i have the original version of a picture without a watermark that i don't want to upload. Example, i have a folder A, that has sub folders "original" and "current", i would like to add a filter, so every time i select A to be uploaded, "original" wouldn't go, but "current would".

  • Windows service fails to start with local user until password is entered again in logon tab

    Basically we have a service where we use a local account as its logon. it has all the proper permissions, and everything is working fine, service starts and runs and all is good. Then one day, after rebooting, the service fails to start. Logs show incorrect password. Our technicians resolve the issue by simply retyping the password into the "Log On" tab from the services.msc. Unfortunately we have not been able to root cause. I suspect that the password that is stored for the service is lost somehow. Does anyone know where the password hash might be stored so we can check it? The only activities that seem to be possibly related are patching with Microsoft security patches, but we have multiple servers running the same service, and we have never seen more than one at a time, and its usually a different one each time when this occurrs. I believe this to be the same issue as this: Windows service fails to start with custom user until started once with local user But i was unable to add comments, and its really old.
