  • Are primitive types garbage collected in Android?

    - by snctln
I know this may be a dumb question, but my background is more in c++ and managing my own memory. I am currently cutting down every single allocation that I can from one of my games to try and reduce the frequency of garbage collection and perceived "lag", so for every variable that I create that is an Object (String and Rect for example) I am making sure that I create it before hand in my constructor and not create temporary variables in simple 10 line functions... (I hope that makes sense) Anyways I was working though it some more tonight and I realized that I may be completely wrong about my assumption on garbage collection and primitive types (int, boolean, float) are these primitive type variables that I create in a 10 line function that gets called 20 times a second adding to my problem of garbage collection? So a year ago every few seconds I would see a message in logcat like GC freed 4010 objects / 484064 bytes in 101ms Now I see that message every 15-90 seconds or so... So to rephrase my question: Are primitive types (int, float, boolean, etc) included when seeing this message?

  • How to toggle orientation lock in android?

    - by pixel
I want to create checkbox in my preference Activity that allows user to toggle orientation change. Is there a way to toggle orientation lock?

  • Android Certificate Changed?

    - by rgrandy
I recently formatted my computer and updated to Windows 7. I backed up my keystore and tried to sign my apk with it but it gave me an error that said my certificate expires in 22yrs. which is just shy of what the market requires to upload the apk. So now I am stuck not being able to update my app... How did this happen? Is there a way to extend the lifetime of certificates so that I can update my app? Is there a way to verify this certificate against an old apk that has been uploaded to the market so that I can be sure I am trying to sign with the same certificate and I didn't have a mix up? • Send a public broadcast from an AppWidget in Android

    - by greve
I have a widget for a music player and want to be able to send broadcasts when pushing the different buttons. What I want to do is when a button is pushed, the widget sends a public broadcast to another BroadcastReceiver so it can handle the different actions. In my activity class with the BroadcastReceiver: private BroadcastReceiver broadcastReceiver = new BroadcastReceiver() { @Override public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) { String action = intent.getAction(); if (action.equals(Constants.ACTION_NEXT)) { Log.d("RECEIVER", "ACTION_NEXT"); } } }; @Override protected void onStart() { super.onStart(); IntentFilter filter = new IntentFilter(); //Widget actions filter.addAction(Constants.ACTION_NEXT); registerReceiver(broadcastReceiver, new IntentFilter(filter)); } In my Widget: public void onUpdate(Context context, AppWidgetManager appWidgetManager, int[] appWidgetIds) { RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(), R.layout.widget); PendingIntent pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(context, 0, new Intent(Constants.ACTION_NEXT), 0); views.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.id.WidgetNextButton, pendingIntent); appWidgetManager.updateAppWidget(appWidgetId, views); } Any help or other solutions are very much appreciated!

  • ArrayAdapter need to be clear even i am creating a new one

    - by Roi
Hello I'm having problems understanding how the ArrayAdapter works. My code is working but I dont know how.(http://amy-mac.com/images/2013/code_meme.jpg) I have my activity, inside it i have 2 private classes.: public class MainActivity extends Activity { ... private void SomePrivateMethod(){ autoCompleteTextView.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item, new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList("")))); autoCompleteTextView.addTextChangedListener(new MyTextWatcher()); } ... private class MyTextWatcher implements TextWatcher { ... } private class SearchAddressTask extends AsyncTask<String, Void, String[]> { ... } } Now inside my textwatcher class i call the search address task: @Override public void afterTextChanged(Editable s) { new SearchAddressTask().execute(s.toString()); } So far so good. In my SearchAddressTask I do some stuff on doInBackground() that returns the right array. On the onPostExecute() method i try to just modify the AutoCompleteTextView adapter to add the values from the array obtained in doInBackground() but the adapter cannot be modified: NOT WORKING CODE: protected void onPostExecute(String[] addressArray) { ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = (ArrayAdapter<String>) autoCompleteDestination.getAdapter(); adapter.clear(); adapter.addAll(new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList(addressArray))); adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(); Log.d("SearchAddressTask", "adapter isEmpty : " + adapter.isEmpty()); // Returns true!!??! } I dont get why this is not working. Even if i run it on UI Thread... I kept investigating, if i recreate the arrayAdapter, is working in the UI (Showing the suggestions), but i still need to clear the old adapter: WORKING CODE: protected void onPostExecute(String[] addressArray) { ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = (ArrayAdapter<String>) autoCompleteDestination.getAdapter(); adapter.clear(); autoCompleteDestination.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(NewDestinationActivity.this,android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item, new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList(addressArray)))); //adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(); // no needed Log.d("SearchAddressTask", "adapter isEmpty : " + adapter.isEmpty()); // keeps returning true!!??! } So my question is, what is really happening with this ArrayAdapter? why I cannot modify it in my onPostExecute()? Why is working in the UI if i am recreating the adapter? and why i need to clear the old adapter then? I dont know there are so many questions that I need some help in here!! Thanks!!

  • Doing large updates against indexed view

    - by user217136
We have an indexed view that runs across three large tables. Two of these tables (A & B) are constantly getting updated with user transactions and the other table (C) contains data product info that is needs to be updated once a week. This product table contains over 6 million records. We need this view across these three tables for our core business process and unfortunately we cannot change this aspect. We even had a sql server MVP come in to help test under load to make sure we have the most efficient configuration. There is one column in the product table that gets utilized in the view and has to be updated each week. The problem we are now encountering is that as volume is increasing on our transactions against tables A & B, the update to Table C is causing deadlocks. I have tried several different methods to no avail: 1) I was hoping that we could change the view so that table C could be a dirty read "WITH (NOLOCK)" but apparently that functionality is not available with indexes views. 2) I thought about updating a new column in Table C and then just renaming it when the process is done but you cannot do that due to the dependency in the view. 3) I also entertained the idea of writing this value to a temporary product table, and then running an ALTER statement against the view to have it point to my new table. however when i did that the indexes on my view were dropped and it took quite a bit of time to recreate them. 4) we tried to do the weekly update in small chunks (as small as 100 records at a time) but we still run into dead locks. questions: a) we are using sql server 2005. Does sql server 2008 have a new functionality with their indexed views that would help us? Is there now a way to do dirty reads w/ an indexed view? b) a better approach to altering an existing view to point to a new table? thanks!

  • My simple program runs on Android emulator, but not on my Nexus One

    - by noisesolo
To clarify, I have no trouble getting the Nexus One connected in developer's mode. I can actually get Eclipse to "run" my program on my Nexus One. However, my Nexus One simply gets stuck in a reboot loop. I've also created an .apk file and put it onto my Nexus One, installing it with apkInstaller. However, it crashed while installing. I see my app on my phone, but I'm kind of afraid to run it. I am not doing anything fancy in my program; all it does is generate text by shuffling a couple arrays of strings together. It uses a bunch of text views, two buttons, and a spinner. I have only edited the main source file, the strings XML file, and the layout XML file, nothing else. It's a 2.1-update1 program and it runs fine on the emulator. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm using Windows 7 (32 bit) and my Nexus One is running Cyanogen 5.0.7.1. I'm pretty sure it's my code that's causing the problem. Now I'm just wondering if there are any common mistakes that would lead my app to run on the emulator but not on my device. Thanks in advance.

  • Android multiple screen sizes with same density

    - by droidy
I'm confused regarding the densities. I see that with medium density, the screen resolution could be either 320x480, 480x800, or 480x854. So if I have an image thats 300px wide in the mdpi folder, how is it going to look the same size on all 3 different screen sizes (mainly 320x480 vs the other 2)? And by look the same size, I mean scale to be bigger or smaller depending upon the screen size. Thanks.

  • Use trackball for scrolling in Android ListView

    - by gartenkralleb
hi, i have a ListView, whose content should not be selectable. i set the ListView to choiceMode="none" and set a transparent listSelector. for touch mode it acts as desired. a problem is the use of the trackball. if i try to use it for scrolling, the scroll starts after the 10th push to "down". this is caused by the invisible listSelector, which scrolls down the list until the 10th list item is "invisibily" selected. i try to override dispatchTrackballEvent and do the scrolling with scrollBy, but i did not finished this approach yet, to have a look on alternative suggestions. is there a simple solution for my problem?

  • Set Android Gallery widget to show specific starting image

    - by Dalmazio Brisinda
Hi all, I have a task where the user can select an image from a GridView representing a photo album, and from this I start a new activity which displays a Gallery widget to show the images of the photo album. However, I can't seem to get the Gallery widget to show the contents of the photo album with a given image as the starting point. Ideally I would like a Gallery#setStartingImage(int position) or something similar. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Best, Dalmazio

  • iPhone: Animating a view when another view appears/disappears

    - by MacTouch
    I have the following view hierarchy UITabBarController - UINavigationController - UITableViewController When the table view appears (animated) I create a toolbar and add it as subview of the TabBar at the bottom of the page and let it animate in with the table view. Same procedure in other direction, when the table view disappears. It does not work as expected. The animation duration is OK, but somehow not exact the same as the animation of the table view when it becomes visible When I display the table view for the second time, the toolbar does not disappear at all and remains at the bottom of the parent view. What's wrong with it? - (void)animationDone:(NSString *)animationID finished:(NSNumber *)finished context:(void *)context { UIView *toolBar = [[[self tabBarController] view] viewWithTag:1000]; [toolBar removeFromSuperview]; } - (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated { UIEdgeInsets insets = UIEdgeInsetsMake(0, 0, 44, 0); [[self tableView] setContentInset:insets]; [[self tableView] setScrollIndicatorInsets:insets]; // Toolbar initially placed outside of the visible frame (x=320) UIView *toolBar = [[UIToolbar alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(320, 480-44, 320, 44)]; [toolBar setTag:1000]; [[[self tabBarController] view] addSubview:toolBar]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseInOut]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:0.35]; [toolBar setFrame:CGRectMake(0, 480-44, 320, 44)]; [UIView commitAnimations]; [toolBar release]; [super viewWillAppear:animated]; } - (void)viewWillDisappear:(BOOL)animated { UIView *toolBar = [[[self tabBarController] view] viewWithTag:1000]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseInOut]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:0.35]; [UIView setAnimationDidStopSelector:@selector(animationDone:finished:context:)]; [toolBar setFrame:CGRectMake(320, 480-44, 320, 44)]; [UIView commitAnimations]; [super viewWillDisappear:animated]; }

    - by Tobias Domhan
analogous to this thread: stackoverflow.com/questions/2093594/opengl-extensions-available-on-different-android-devices I would like to collect the different PixelFormats the android devices use. To find out you must do the following: Parameters camParams = camera.getParameters(); int format = camParams.getPreviewFormat(); Now you got to find the number in the following list: developer.android.com/reference/android/graphics/PixelFormat.html#A_8 How to generally open the camera is described here: developer.android.com/resources/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/example/android/apis/graphics/CameraPreview.html I'll have a start: device: T-mobile G1 / HTC Dream android: 1.6 (cyanogen mod) format: YCbCr_420_SP so what formats do your android phones use? thanks in advance :D
