  • free OCR with UI for correcting errors (for Windows)

    - by Hugh Allen
I've used SimpleOCR, which has a nice GUI for correcting errors. Unfortunately it makes a lot of errors! (and suffers other bugs and limitations) Is there a free OCR program for Windows which has such a GUI and a low error rate? I want it to show the original (bitmap) word while I'm editing the OCRed word similar to what SimpleOCR does: Free is good. Open-source is better.

  • Partition table corrupted (USB flash drive)

    - by 13ren
It's an 8 GB Patriot thumb drive, which I've used extensively with lots of data. Today, it is detected, but all data is gone: (EDIT at least some data is still there, but the partition table is gone) EDIT @Sathya (thanks) here's the relevant output from sudo fdisk -l: Disk /dev/sdc: 8019 MB, 8019509248 bytes 247 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1022 cylinders Units = cylinders of 15314 * 512 = 7840768 bytes Disk /dev/sdc doesn't contain a valid partition table It looks like it is /dev/sdc, with that 8 GB... and no partition table. I tried to mount /dev/sdc (and then dmesg | tail): /media> sudo mount /dev/sdc mytmp mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so /media> dmesg | tail [ 24.300000] sdc: unknown partition table [ 24.320000] sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi removable disk sdc [ 24.370000] usb-storage: device scan complete [ 26.870000] EXT2-fs error (device sdc): ext2_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 1 not in group (block 0)! [ 26.870000] EXT2-fs: group descriptors corrupted! [ 50.420000] unhashed dentry being revalidated: .DCOPserver_eeepc-brendanma__0 [ 50.430000] unhashed dentry being revalidated: .DCOPserver_eeepc-brendanma__0 [ 50.430000] unhashed dentry being revalidated: .DCOPserver_eeepc-brendanma__0 [ 5565.470000] EXT2-fs error (device sdc): ext2_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 1 not in group (block 0)! [ 5565.470000] EXT2-fs: group descriptors corrupted! EDIT @Col: results from testdisk Disk /dev/sdc - 8013 MB / 7642 MiB - CHS 1022 247 62 Current partition structure: Partition Start End Size in sectors Partition sector doesn't have the endmark 0xAA55 After I hit [proceed], it says: Structure: Ok. Keys A: add partition, L: load backup, Enter: to continue The "Structure: Ok." seems reassuring... will "A: add partition" make my old data accessible (if it's still there), or will it make a new, fresh partition? Another option is "[ MBR Code ] Write TestDisk MBR code to first sector" - would it be better to do this? EDIT I found that at least some of my data is still on the flash drive, by using the below, and searching for English text in less (like " the "): cat /dev/sde | tr -cd '\11\12\40\1540-\176' | less (The drive changed from "/dev/sdb" to "/dev/sde" because I connected some extra drives today). I've learnt that "/dev/sde1" would be the first partition; and "/dev/sde" is the whole drive. Because unix treats these devices just like files, you can use all the ordinary unix file commands on them, like cat, and then process them like any other stream of data. The tr above removes non-printable characters ("\40" is space, which I wanted to preserve). In less, you can use "/" to search, similar to Vim. How can I get my data back (assuming it's still there)? If only the partition table is corrupted, is there a standard "partition recovery tool"? Is there a way to "repartition" without deleting everything?

  • How to print a rendered website to pdf or vector graphics?

    - by Lo Sauer
This is a crucial question to many: Searching the web, I have found several command line tools that allow you to convert a HTML-document to a PDF-document, however they all seem to use their own, and rather incomplete rendering engine, resulting in poor quality How can you print the rendered output of a modern web-browser to pdf, (and/or svg) whilst retaining as much vector graphics as possible? There is a solution called: webkit-pdf (which renders everything to bitmap graphics) I am looking for options, alternatives, suggestions perhaps even a printer-driver or webservices? Thanks

  • How to get the Classic Start Menu in Windows 7?

    - by Rob Kam
Classic start menu is simple and efficient, but the Vista style start menu gets in the way from letting me get on with what I want to do. It also has features I don't want, such as an irritating bitmap that changes according to where the cursor hovers. I've managed to disable most of the unwanted cosmetics and animations but it's still not the dull old Classic Menu that I prefer. How to get the Classic Start Menu in Windows 7 but without a kludge if possible?

  • Windows 7 Remote Desktop Connection Rendering Each Frame?

    - by TheDarkIn1978
When connecting to my work computer over VPN and Remote Desktop Connection, images and videos are sent back one frame at a time, which really slows things down. I'm familiar with the "Experience" tab while connecting and the only options I have checked are "Visual styles" and "Persistent bitmap caching". Isn't it possible to work remotely that is more similar to screen sharing over Skype, where there is a lag but not every single frame has to be rendered and passed back to me one at a time? Both computers are running Windows 7 Professional.

  • mdadm: Win7-install created a boot partition on one of my RAID6 drives. How to rebuild?

    - by EXIT_FAILURE
My problem happened when I attempted to install Windows 7 on it's own SSD. The Linux OS I used which has knowledge of the software RAID system is on a SSD that I disconnected prior to the install. This was so that windows (or I) wouldn't inadvertently mess it up. However, and in retrospect, foolishly, I left the RAID disks connected, thinking that windows wouldn't be so ridiculous as to mess with a HDD that it sees as just unallocated space. Boy was I wrong! After copying over the installation files to the SSD (as expected and desired), it also created an ntfs partition on one of the RAID disks. Both unexpected and totally undesired! . I changed out the SSDs again, and booted up in linux. mdadm didn't seem to have any problem assembling the array as before, but if I tried to mount the array, I got the error message: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so dmesg: EXT4-fs (md0): ext4_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 0 not in group (block 1318081259)! EXT4-fs (md0): group descriptors corrupted! I then used qparted to delete the newly created ntfs partition on /dev/sdd so that it matched the other three /dev/sd{b,c,e}, and requested a resync of my array with echo repair > /sys/block/md0/md/sync_action This took around 4 hours, and upon completion, dmesg reports: md: md0: requested-resync done. A bit brief after a 4-hour task, though I'm unsure as to where other log files exist (I also seem to have messed up my sendmail configuration). In any case: No change reported according to mdadm, everything checks out. mdadm -D /dev/md0 still reports: Version : 1.2 Creation Time : Wed May 23 22:18:45 2012 Raid Level : raid6 Array Size : 3907026848 (3726.03 GiB 4000.80 GB) Used Dev Size : 1953513424 (1863.02 GiB 2000.40 GB) Raid Devices : 4 Total Devices : 4 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Mon May 26 12:41:58 2014 State : clean Active Devices : 4 Working Devices : 4 Failed Devices : 0 Spare Devices : 0 Layout : left-symmetric Chunk Size : 4K Name : okamilinkun:0 UUID : 0c97ebf3:098864d8:126f44e3:e4337102 Events : 423 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 8 16 0 active sync /dev/sdb 1 8 32 1 active sync /dev/sdc 2 8 48 2 active sync /dev/sdd 3 8 64 3 active sync /dev/sde Trying to mount it still reports: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so and dmesg: EXT4-fs (md0): ext4_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 0 not in group (block 1318081259)! EXT4-fs (md0): group descriptors corrupted! I'm a bit unsure where to proceed from here, and trying stuff "to see if it works" is a bit too risky for me. This is what I suggest I should attempt to do: Tell mdadm that /dev/sdd (the one that windows wrote into) isn't reliable anymore, pretend it is newly re-introduced to the array, and reconstruct its content based on the other three drives. I also could be totally wrong in my assumptions, that the creation of the ntfs partition on /dev/sdd and subsequent deletion has changed something that cannot be fixed this way. My question: Help, what should I do? If I should do what I suggested , how do I do that? From reading documentation, etc, I would think maybe: mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --set-faulty /dev/sdd mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdd mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sdd However, the documentation examples suggest /dev/sdd1, which seems strange to me, as there is no partition there as far as linux is concerned, just unallocated space. Maybe these commands won't work without. Maybe it makes sense to mirror the partition table of one of the other raid devices that weren't touched, before --re-add. Something like: sfdisk -d /dev/sdb | sfdisk /dev/sdd Bonus question: Why would the Windows 7 installation do something so st...potentially dangerous? Update I went ahead and marked /dev/sdd as faulty, and removed it (not physically) from the array: # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --set-faulty /dev/sdd # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdd However, attempting to --re-add was disallowed: # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sdd mdadm: --re-add for /dev/sdd to /dev/md0 is not possible --add, was fine. # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdd mdadm -D /dev/md0 now reports the state as clean, degraded, recovering, and /dev/sdd as spare rebuilding. /proc/mdstat shows the recovery progress: md0 : active raid6 sdd[4] sdc[1] sde[3] sdb[0] 3907026848 blocks super 1.2 level 6, 4k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/3] [UU_U] [>....................] recovery = 2.1% (42887780/1953513424) finish=348.7min speed=91297K/sec nmon also shows expected output: ¦sdb 0% 87.3 0.0| > |¦ ¦sdc 71% 109.1 0.0|RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR > |¦ ¦sdd 40% 0.0 87.3|WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW > |¦ ¦sde 0% 87.3 0.0|> || It looks good so far. • How to determine which image(s) in a word document is unusually large?

    - by Brian
I have a word 2007 document that is now 7MB in size that is being edited by many folks. I would like to figure out which of the many images in the document is the 'culprit'. My hunch is likely one or two of them is a bitmap or some other large image. In smaller documents when this is happened I can do it by trial and error: Remove an Image Save the File Check File size repeat Is there a more elegant solution to this issue?

  • How does one replicate the "windows XP style" theme on Windows 7?

    - by luckcity
I have gone ahead and selected the Windows Classic theme in WIN7's "Window Color and Appearance" to turn off Aero. I'm looking to replicate the "windows XP style" theme due to some screen recognition software that was built on an XP machine. Is it possible to edit/import the "windows XP style" theme file and use it in WIN7? I am mostly looking to get the colors/fonts similar. Windows/buttons would be good too.

  • Blackberry - Exception when sending SMS programmatically

    - by user213199
    Hello all, I am developing a Blackberry application. I am trying to send SMS programmatically to GSM number. I have gone through many queries and answers related to that and finally added the code for that as below. When the code tries to execute sending some text message to the particular mobile number, it doesn't send and throws exception as "blocking operation not permitted on event dispatch thread". So i created a separate background thread where i put the SMS code and running the code now. But still observing the same exception. Could someone please suggest what am i doing wrong (or) how to do that? class DummyFirst extends MainScreen { private Bitmap background; private VerticalFieldManager _container; private VerticalFieldManager mainVerticalManager; private HorizontalFieldManager horizontalFldManager; private BackGroundThread _thread; CustomControl buttonControl1; public DummyFirst() { super(); LabelField appTitle = new LabelField("Dummy App"); setTitle(appTitle); background = Bitmap.getBitmapResource("HomeBack.png"); _container = new VerticalFieldManager(Manager.NO_VERTICAL_SCROLL | Manager.NO_VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR) { protected void paint(Graphics g) { // Instead of these next two lines, draw your bitmap int y = DummyFirst.this.getMainManager() .getVerticalScroll(); g.clear(); g.drawBitmap(0, 0, background.getWidth(), background .getHeight(), background, 0, 0); super.paint(g); } protected void sublayout(int maxWidth, int maxHeight) { int width = background.getWidth(); int height = background.getHeight(); super.sublayout(width, height); setExtent(width, height); } }; mainVerticalManager = new VerticalFieldManager( Manager.NO_VERTICAL_SCROLL | Manager.NO_VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR) { protected void sublayout(int maxWidth, int maxHeight) { int width = background.getWidth(); int height = background.getHeight(); super.sublayout(width, height); setExtent(width, height); } }; HorizontalFieldManager horizontalFldManager = new HorizontalFieldManager(Manager.USE_ALL_WIDTH); buttonControl1 = new CustomControl("Send", ButtonField.CONSUME_CLICK, 83, 15); horizontalFldManager.add(buttonControl1); this.setStatus(horizontalFldManager); FieldListener listner = new FieldListener(); buttonControl1.setChangeListener(listner); _container.add(mainVerticalManager); this.add(_container); } class FieldListener implements FieldChangeListener { public void fieldChanged(Field f, int context) { if (f == buttonControl1) { _thread = new BackGroundThread(); _thread.start(); } } } private class BackGroundThread extends Thread { public BackGroundThread() { /*** initialize parameters in constructor *****/ } public void run() { // UiApplication.getUiApplication().invokeLater(new Runnable() UiApplication.getUiApplication().invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { try { MessageConnection msgConn = (MessageConnection) Connector .open("sms://:0"); Message msg = msgConn .newMessage( MessageConnection.TEXT_MESSAGE); TextMessage txtMsg = (TextMessage) msg; String msgAdr = "sms://+919861348735"; txtMsg.setAddress(msgAdr); txtMsg.setPayloadText("Test Message"); // here exception is thrown msgConn.send(txtMsg); System.out.println("Sending" + " SMS success !!!"); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println(e.getMessage()); e.printStackTrace(); } } // run }); } } public boolean onClose() { System.out.println("close event called, request to be" + " in the backgroud...."); UiApplication.getUiApplication().requestBackground(); return true; } } I resolved this issue by creating a separate thread and then not using Port etc. Here it is: SMSThread smsthread = new SMSThread("Some message",mobNumber); smsthread.start(); class SMSThread extends Thread { Thread myThread; MessageConnection msgConn; String message; String mobilenumber; public SMSThread( String textMsg, String mobileNumber ) { message = textMsg; mobilenumber = mobileNumber; } public void run() { try { msgConn = (MessageConnection) Connector.open("sms://+"+ mobilenumber); TextMessage text = (TextMessage) msgConn.newMessage(MessageConnection.TEXT_MESSAGE); text.setPayloadText(message); msgConn.send(text); msgConn.close(); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println("Exception: " + e); } } }

  • Saving image from Gallery to db - Coursor IllegalStateException

    - by MyWay
I want to save to db some strings with image. Image can be taken from gallery or user can set the sample one. In the other activity I have a listview which should present the rows with image and name. I'm facing so long this problem. It occurs when I wanna display listview with the image from gallery, If the sample image is saved in the row everything works ok. My problem is similar to this one: how to save image taken from camera and show it to listview - crashes with "IllegalStateException" but I can't find there the solution for me My table in db looks like this: public static final String KEY_ID = "_id"; public static final String ID_DETAILS = "INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT"; public static final int ID_COLUMN = 0; public static final String KEY_NAME = "name"; public static final String NAME_DETAILS = "TEXT NOT NULL"; public static final int NAME_COLUMN = 1; public static final String KEY_DESCRIPTION = "description"; public static final String DESCRIPTION_DETAILS = "TEXT"; public static final int DESCRIPTION_COLUMN = 2; public static final String KEY_IMAGE ="image" ; public static final String IMAGE_DETAILS = "BLOP"; public static final int IMAGE_COLUMN = 3; //method which create our table private static final String CREATE_PRODUCTLIST_IN_DB = "CREATE TABLE " + DB_TABLE + "( " + KEY_ID + " " + ID_DETAILS + ", " + KEY_NAME + " " + NAME_DETAILS + ", " + KEY_DESCRIPTION + " " + DESCRIPTION_DETAILS + ", " + KEY_IMAGE +" " + IMAGE_DETAILS + ");"; inserting statement: public long insertToProductList(String name, String description, byte[] image) { ContentValues value = new ContentValues(); // get the id of column and value value.put(KEY_NAME, name); value.put(KEY_DESCRIPTION, description); value.put(KEY_IMAGE, image); // put into db return db.insert(DB_TABLE, null, value); } Button which add the picture and onActivityResult method which saves the image and put it into the imageview public void AddPicture(View v) { // creating specified intent which have to get data Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK); // From where we want choose our pictures intent.setType("image/*"); startActivityForResult(intent, PICK_IMAGE); } @Override protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data); // if identification code match to the intent, //if yes we know that is our picture, if(requestCode ==PICK_IMAGE ) { // check if the data comes with intent if(data!= null) { Uri chosenImage = data.getData(); String[] filePathColumn = {MediaStore.Images.Media.DATA}; Cursor cursor = getContentResolver().query(chosenImage, filePathColumn, null, null, null); cursor.moveToFirst(); int columnIndex = cursor.getColumnIndex(filePathColumn[0]); String filePat = cursor.getString(columnIndex); cursor.close(); ImageOfProduct = BitmapFactory.decodeFile(filePat); if(ImageOfProduct!=null) { picture.setImageBitmap(ImageOfProduct); } messageDisplayer("got picture, isn't null " + IdOfPicture); } } } Then the code which converts bitmap to byte[] public byte[] bitmapToByteConvert(Bitmap bit ) { // stream of data getted for compressed bitmap ByteArrayOutputStream gettedData = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); // compressing method bit.compress(CompressFormat.PNG, 0, gettedData); // our byte array return gettedData.toByteArray(); } The method which put data to the row: byte[] image=null; // if the name isn't put to the editView if(name.getText().toString().trim().length()== 0) { messageDisplayer("At least you need to type name of product if you want add it to the DB "); } else{ String desc = description.getText().toString(); if(description.getText().toString().trim().length()==0) { messageDisplayer("the description is set as none"); desc = "none"; } DB.open(); if(ImageOfProduct!= null){ image = bitmapToByteConvert(ImageOfProduct); messageDisplayer("image isn't null"); } else { BitmapDrawable drawable = (BitmapDrawable) picture.getDrawable(); image = bitmapToByteConvert(drawable.getBitmap()); } if(image.length>0 && image!=null) { messageDisplayer(Integer.toString(image.length)); } DB.insertToProductList(name.getText().toString(), desc, image ); DB.close(); messageDisplayer("well done you add the product"); finish(); You can see that I'm checking here the length of array to be sure that I don't send empty one. And here is the place where Error appears imo, this code is from activity which presents the listview with data taken from db private void LoadOurLayoutListWithInfo() { // firstly wee need to open connection with db db= new sqliteDB(getApplicationContext()); db.open(); // creating our custom adaprer, the specification of it will be typed // in our own class (MyArrayAdapter) which will be created below ArrayAdapter<ProductFromTable> customAdapter = new MyArrayAdapter(); //get the info from whole table tablecursor = db.getAllColumns(); if(tablecursor != null) { startManagingCursor(tablecursor); tablecursor.moveToFirst(); } // now we moving all info from tablecursor to ourlist if(tablecursor != null && tablecursor.moveToFirst()) { do{ // taking info from row in table int id = tablecursor.getInt(sqliteDB.ID_COLUMN); String name= tablecursor.getString(sqliteDB.NAME_COLUMN); String description= tablecursor.getString(sqliteDB.DESCRIPTION_COLUMN); byte[] image= tablecursor.getBlob(3); tablefromDB.add(new ProductFromTable(id,name, description, image)); // moving until we didn't find last row }while(tablecursor.moveToNext()); } listView = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.tagwriter_listoftags); //as description says // setAdapter = The ListAdapter which is responsible for maintaining //the data backing this list and for producing a view to represent //an item in that data set. listView.setAdapter(customAdapter); } I put the info from row tho objects which are stored in list. I read tones of question but I can't find any solution for me. Everything works when I put the sample image ( which is stored in app res folder ). Thx for any advice

  • SQL SERVER – Denali Feature – Zoom Query Editor

    - by pinaldave
SQL Server next version ‘Denali’ is coming up with very neat feature which can be used while presentations, group discussion or for people who prefers large fonts. I have increased the font size to 400 percentage and for the same reason they are very large. You can adjust the font size which is convenient to you. One more reason to go for next version of SQL Server. • A Quick Primer on SharePoint Customization

    - by PeterBrunone

All told, there could be around 50 images involved, and a few hundred CSS (style) classes.  Installing a theme once it’s been created is no great feat.  Given the number of pieces, of course, creating a new theme could take anywhere from a day to a week… once decisions have been made about the desired appearance. 2)      Master Page – A master page provides the framework for page layout.  This includes all the top and side menus, where content shows up, et cetera.  Master pages have been around for a long time in ASP.NET (Microsoft’s web development platform), and they do require some .NET programming knowledge.  Beyond that, in SharePoint, there are a few dozen controls which the system expects find on a given page.  They’re not all used at once, but if they’re not there when they’re needed, chaos ensues.  Estimating a custom master page is difficult, as it depends on the level of customization.  I’ve been on projects where I was brought in simply to fix some problems and add a few finishing touches, and it took 2-3 weeks.  Master page customization requires a large amount of testing time to make sure that the HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and control placement all work well together. 3)      Individual page layout – Each page (ideally) uses a master page for its template, but within the content areas defined by the master page, web parts can be added, removed, and configured from within the browser.  The wireframe that Brent provided could most likely be completed simply by manipulating the content on the home page in this fashion, and we had allowed about a day of effort for the task.  If needed, further functionality can be provided by an experienced ASP.NET developer; custom forms are a common example.  This of course is a bit more in-depth than simple content manipulation and could take several days per page (or more; there’s really no way to quantify this without a set of requirements).   That’s basically it.  To recap:  Fonts and coloring are done with themes, and can take anywhere from a day to a week to create (not counting creative time); required technical skills include HTML, CSS, and image manipulation.  Templated layout is done with master pages, and generally requires a developer familiar with both ASP.NET and SharePoint in particular; it can have far-reaching consequences depending on the complexity of the changes, and could add weeks or months to a project.  Page layout can be as simple as content manipulation in the web browser, taking a few hours per page, or it can involve more detail, like custom forms, and can require programming expertise and significantly more development time.

  • Do Not Optimize Without Measuring

    - by Alois Kraus
Recently I had to do some performance work which included reading a lot of code. It is fascinating with what ideas people come up to solve a problem. Especially when there is no problem. When you look at other peoples code you will not be able to tell if it is well performing or not by reading it. You need to execute it with some sort of tracing or even better under a profiler. The first rule of the performance club is not to think and then to optimize but to measure, think and then optimize. The second rule is to do this do this in a loop to prevent slipping in bad things for too long into your code base. If you skip for some reason the measure step and optimize directly it is like changing the wave function in quantum mechanics. This has no observable effect in our world since it does represent only a probability distribution of all possible values. In quantum mechanics you need to let the wave function collapse to a single value. A collapsed wave function has therefore not many but one distinct value. This is what we physicists call a measurement. If you optimize your application without measuring it you are just changing the probability distribution of your potential performance values. Which performance your application actually has is still unknown. You only know that it will be within a specific range with a certain probability. As usual there are unlikely values within your distribution like a startup time of 20 minutes which should only happen once in 100 000 years. 100 000 years are a very short time when the first customer tries your heavily distributed networking application to run over a slow WIFI network… What is the point of this? Every programmer/architect has a mental performance model in his head. A model has always a set of explicit preconditions and a lot more implicit assumptions baked into it. When the model is good it will help you to think of good designs but it can also be the source of problems. In real world systems not all assumptions of your performance model (implicit or explicit) hold true any longer. The only way to connect your performance model and the real world is to measure it. In the WIFI example the model did assume a low latency high bandwidth LAN connection. If this assumption becomes wrong the system did have a drastic change in startup time. Lets look at a example. Lets assume we want to cache some expensive UI resource like fonts objects. For this undertaking we do create a Cache class with the UI themes we want to support. Since Fonts are expensive objects we do create it on demand the first time the theme is requested. A simple example of a Theme cache might look like this: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Drawing; struct Theme { public Color Color; public Font Font; } static class ThemeCache { static Dictionary<string, Theme> _Cache = new Dictionary<string, Theme> { {"Default", new Theme { Color = Color.AliceBlue }}, {"Theme12", new Theme { Color = Color.Aqua }}, }; public static Theme Get(string theme) { Theme cached = _Cache[theme]; if (cached.Font == null) { Console.WriteLine("Creating new font"); cached.Font = new Font("Arial", 8); } return cached; } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Theme item = ThemeCache.Get("Theme12"); item = ThemeCache.Get("Theme12"); } } This cache does create font objects only once since on first retrieve of the Theme object the font is added to the Theme object. When we let the application run it should print “Creating new font” only once. Right? Wrong! The vigilant readers have spotted the issue already. The creator of this cache class wanted to get maximum performance. So he decided that the Theme object should be a value type (struct) to not put too much pressure on the garbage collector. The code Theme cached = _Cache[theme]; if (cached.Font == null) { Console.WriteLine("Creating new font"); cached.Font = new Font("Arial", 8); } does work with a copy of the value stored in the dictionary. This means we do mutate a copy of the Theme object and return it to our caller. But the original Theme object in the dictionary will have always null for the Font field! The solution is to change the declaration of struct Theme to class Theme or to update the theme object in the dictionary. Our cache as it is currently is actually a non caching cache. The funny thing was that I found out with a profiler by looking at which objects where finalized. I found way too many font objects to be finalized. After a bit debugging I found the allocation source for Font objects was this cache. Since this cache was there for years it means that the cache was never needed since I found no perf issue due to the creation of font objects. the cache was never profiled if it did bring any performance gain. to make the cache beneficial it needs to be accessed much more often. That was the story of the non caching cache. Next time I will write something something about measuring.
