• Disabled WiFi but it keeps re-enabling itself; want it to stay disabled

  I have an Alienware X51 desktop with a wireless card, I have it connected via ethernet and want to permanently disable WiFi from ever using itself. When running Windows, I go to device manager and rightclick-disable the Wireless card and that takes care of my problem. Is there a similar method using Ubuntu 14.04? For now, I click on the network icon in the system tray and uncheck 'Enable wifi' but it seems to turn itself back on as I use my computer, I think I have the incident isolated to something with Steam. It seems like after I start the Steam client it always is re-enabled. Hopeful answer: Just disable/remove/block wireless card from ever working.

• Broadcom bcm4311 rev2 Full disabled on battery

  Ok this is my problem... My problem begins while ago when I installed ubuntu 10.10. (is the same with 11.04,11.10...) My wireless card is disabled if the power cord is unplugged, and the only way to fix this is rebooting my pc WITH the power cord plugged and if I use lspci command, it doesn't show me the wireless card. is like if I've removed the wireless board from my laptop port. I've searched a lot of solutions for bcmw4311 issues, but none of them fix my problem because when apply one of the fixes, if I unplug the cord, my wireless card it just gone away... I have dual boot on my pc(w7,ubuntu), I've tried with full installation just to see if this is the problem, but not, is the same. On windows all work correctly with and without power cord.. so this is not a hardware problem, is more like a kernel problem. anyway I can use wireless with power cord plugged, but c'mon this is a laptop not a desktop pc XD haha any help is welcome

• On-board HDMI Audio

  I have tried searching for answers to this issue but have had no luck. My HDMI display is working but I have no audio from the HDMI .There is no option for HDMI under sound preferences hardware or output. Purging and re-installing pulse audio doesn't change anything. I am using the on-board HDMI port on my motherboard, I do not have a PCI graphics card installed. CPU: i7-3770 Mobo: Asus Sabertooth z77 Kernel: 2.6.39-3-bb03 running aplay -l returns ** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Seems as if the system doesn't even recognize the possibilty of HDMI audio output. Any ideas?

• Load old kernel module while keeping current

  So I was wondering if there is anyway that I would be able to load an old iwlwifi from a 2.6 kernel while still using the 3.2 kernel and if there was a guide to doing so? I need to be able to do so because my wireless card is.... well the new kernels have broken all support for my card, which is a Intel Ultimate-N 6300. I'm extremely upset with how badly they broke support for this card to the point where I can't connect to any router that isn't wifi N enabled and even then only a select few routers work, it amazes me as to how awful it is and whats more amazing is how well it worked in 2.6 kernels. I've tried all the work arounds that have been discussed to try and fix this, and the only thing I have found that works is running a 2.6 kernel. However I would like to be able to keep my 3.2 kernel and just load up an old version of iwlwifi that actually supports it, is there anyway to do this?

• Asus A8N-SLI soundcard/headphone not recognized/working

  I have an Asus A8N-SLI with built-in sound-card which in the front has headset connection. Alsamixer V1.0.25 says Card: HD-Audio Generic Chip:ATI R6xx HDMI. Only option it gives is S/PDIF nothing else. I can only select the Generic sound-card others are not available. It seems it is not being recognized by Ubuntu. My technical skills are limited and I have searched for similar problems but could not find a solution. Any help in how to proceed forward is therefore greatly appreciated. I also have a windows focus problem with Gnome3 and Unity for which I will make a new question. Between those two problems it works like a charm as always. Though I'm only going to upgrade the laptop to 12.04 if I have the desktop running smoothly.

• Shut down Netbook by closing lid - ubunti 13.10

  My wife has an Acer Aspire One (with the SSD Card and an SD expansion card). It has never been able to hibernate or suspend, always creating errors and occasionally trashing the data on the SD card, which is the home partition so it's unfortunate. To get around the problem I have set all exit methods to produce shutdown - she tends to simply shut the lid. I'm aware the default behaviour has for some time been to suspend, but I've got round that using the gnome tweak tool. However, I've just installed 13.10 and whilst I have installed the gnome tweak tool and set it to shut down the system appears to be ignoring/bypassing the setting, electing to suspend when the lid is shut. Can anyone tell me how to fix it please? I'm quite happy to get my hands dirty with the command line.

• Should I switch my graphics mode in the BIOS to avoid using Bumblebee?

  I have just purchased a Acer 3830TG, the timeline X series. To my surprise I found out that there is no first-party support for nvidia optimus for linux. Bumblebee works great, but the battery life from the graphics card always running is not so great. I don't use linux for games so i don't really need the graphics card on, I have Windows for that. In my bios, I have the ability to change my graphics mode from switchable to integrated. If I do this, reinstall ubuntu, what will happen? Will my nvidia card just turn off? Will everything work properly, as if i'm not running an optimus laptop? Is this recommended as opposed to dealing with bumblebee? What is the best thing I could do?

I guess it's a driver issue, but I need help to debug this problem and to solve it. • HP dv6-2119tx cant find the built in tv tuner?? Ubuntu 12.10

  Installed Ubuntu 12.10 yesterday and I've been playing around trying to get all the drivers for my dv6. I have taken care of the the graphics card and the sound card which to be honest is not the greatest drivers I have found. Specs are Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz with nvidia gt230 My problem atm is the tv tuner card! Ive searched everywhere but i cant even find something to start on. I guess I am still clueless but I really dont know what to do??? I really dont want windows anymore so if anyone could guide me Id really appreciate it. Thanks...

• Radon HD 6870 compatibility with Ubuntu 11.10

  Does anyone have experience with the XFX Radeon HD 6870 on Ubuntu 11.10? I've googled and the best I could find was someone getting the card to 'work' on linux. Nothing specific about ubuntu and this card. Specifically, I want to be able to use the full 1900x1200 resolution and watch 1080p movies. If yes, was it very complicated to get working? Note: I do not have the card yet, I am debating buying it, but would like to know beforehand because there is a restocking fee if I have to return it. Thanks.

• EVGA GTX650Ti Boost / Ubuntu 12.04 / 2 X-Star WQHD

  I bought 2 X-Star WQHD monitors which, predictably, did not work with my on board video card. Yesterday I installed the EVGA card and have been trying to get the NVIDIA drivers to work. I tried to install the 304 .run, I tried to remove that and then install the nvidia-current, then I tried to activate the proprietary driver from within Ubuntu...for the first couple of attempts, I was able to see 800x600 or something close on the X-Star displays but now all I see is flashing colors on those. On my older Samsung monitor (S22B300B 21.5") is still displaying through the EVGA card. Any thoughts on how to go about fixing this?

• No sound coming from HDMI

  (Ubuntu 12.04 x64) After looking at other questions (here and other sites) and trying their respective answers, I am still unable to get the hdmi audio out working. I have downloaded the recommended hardware drivers for my card (radeon hd 4350), made sure that the card is not muted in alsamixer, and set it as the correct output device in sound settings. I have also disabled the onboard sound devices in the bios menu. In aplay -l, it shows my hdmi card as hw:0,3 Even after doing sound tests I still cannot hear anything. Any suggestions? Not sure where to go from here, I am fairly new to linux.

  I'm getting some weird behavior in asp.net MVC2 (at least it's not what I'm expecting). I have a controller httppost action that processes credit cards. I'm setting a session variable on the server to let me know if a user has attempted to process a card. I clear that session variable when I'm done. I am doing some very quick posts to test the process and the session variable is coming back null everytime because I clear the session variable at the end of the process. I have some debug prints that show me that the all requests are processed synchronously. That is...the first attempt occurs, it fails, session variable is cleared, second attempt tries and fails and the variable is cleared, etc... My first thought was that this was a side effect of debugging and that it just lined requests up for debugging purposes using the local webserver. So I put it on a development server and the same thing is occurring. Multiple submits/posts are processed synchronously. I even put a System.Threading.Sleep in there to make sure it would stop right after I set the session variable and it still won't even START the second request until the first is done. Has anyone else seen this behavior? My understanding was that a worker process was spawned for each request and that these actions could happen asychronously. Here's some psuedo code if (Session["CardCharged"] != null) return RedirectToAction("Index", "Problem"); Session["CardCharged"] = false; //starting the process System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10000); //charge card here if (!providerResponse.IsApproved) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("failed"); Session["CardCharged"] = null; //have to allow them to charge again since this failed return View(myModel); } Session["CardCharged"] = true; return RedirectToAction("Index", "OrderComplete"); I should mention that my code ALWAYS fails the credit card check for testing purposes. I'm trying to test the situation where processing is STILL occurring and redirect the user elsewhere. I have set a dummy session variable elsewhere to assure that the session id "sticks". Edit : The Solution : Upgrade kernel and then update all graphic card drivers.Now there is no problem .

• Nvidia GTS 450 HDMI problem?

I have a problem with my video card, I have a video card GeForce GTS 450 and a TV Samsung Series 4 43 "and I have it connected to my video card via a cable Mini HDMI to the TV and everything works perfectly, I can instarlar Ubuntu 12.04 (64bits) perfectly, but the problem when I want to change the screen resolution but try to change the driver I install that comes directly from the Nvidia page gave me an error at the end. maximum resolution I presents is 1024x 768 and is supposed to introduce more resolutions and that is connected to the HDMI. A someone else has happened???? Will have some sort of solution???? I hope someone can help me and I thank you very much. Regards

• Ubuntu 12.04 ATI 6450

  Right now my video card isn't responding after the Ubuntu Logo is shown, (I see a black screen and that's it) I have installed ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 and if I remove the video card and use the VGA from the MOBO then I can use it with no problems, other data: 4 GB of ram 1333 500 GB WD AMD APU A6 3500 2,1 GHZ I forgot a couple of details, everything was working great until last night, when the light went off (I don't know if I'm explaining myself I'm from Argentina and english isn't my first language there was a power cut I meant) and then when it got back I used my pc until I went to bed (after upgrading) and this morning, when I woke up I had this problem for breakfast, I've been reading a little and I had a similar problem before and fixed it, but it was a system problem, a missing package or something, I don't remember, but here the only issue is that the video card doesn't give me image after the ubuntu logo.

• What's going on with INETA and the Regional Speakers Bureau?

  For those of you that have been waiting patiently (and not so patiently) I'm happy to say that we're very near completion on some changes/enhancements/improvements that will allow us to finally go live with the INETA Regional Speakers Bureau. I know quite a few of you have already registered, which is great (though some of you may need to come back and update your info) and we've had a few folks submit requests, mostly in a test capacity, but soon we'll be up and live. Here's how it breaks down. Be sure to read this, because things have changed a bit from when we initially announced it. 1. The majority of our speaker/event funding is going into the Regional Speakers Bureau.  The National Bureau still exists, but it's a good bit smaller than it was before, and it's not an "every group" benefit anymore. We'll be using the National Bureau as more of a strategic task force, targeting high impact events and areas that need some community building love from INETA. These will be identified and handled on a case by case basis, and may include more than just user group events. 2. You're going to get more events per group, per year than you did before. Not only are we focusing more resources on this program, but we're also making a lot of efforts to use it more effectively. With the INETA Regional Speakers Bureau, you should be able to get 2-3 INETA speakers per year, on average. Not every geographical area will have exactly the same experience, but we're doing the best we can. 3. It's not a farm team program for the National Bureau. Unsurprisingly, I managed to offend a number of people when I previously made the comment that the Regional Speakers Bureau program was a farm team or stepping stone to the National Bureau. It was a poor choice of words.  Anyone can participate in the Regional Speakers Bureau, and I look forward to working with all of you. 4. There is assistance for your efforts. The exact final details are still being hammered out, but expect it to look something like this: (all distances listed are based on a round trip) Distances < 120 miles = $0 121 miles - 240 miles = $50 (effectively 1 to 2 hours, each way) 241 miles - 360 miles = $100 (effectively 2 to 3 hours, each way) 361 miles - 480 miles = $200 (effectively 3 to 4 hours, each way) For those of you who travel a lot, we're working on a solution to handle group visits when you're away from home. These will (for now) be handled on a case by case basis. 5. We're going to make it as easy as possible to work with the program. In order to do this, we need a few things from you. For speakers, that means your home address. It also means (maybe) filling out a simple 1 line expense report via the INETA website. For user groups, it means making sure your meeting address is up to date as well. 6. Distances will be automatically calculated from your home of record to the user group event and back. We realize that this is not a perfect solution to every instance, but we're not paying you to speak at an event, and you won't be taxed on this money. It's simply some assistance to make your community efforts easier. Our way of saying thanks for everything you do. 7. Sounds good so far, what's the catch? There's always a catch, right? In this case there are two of them: 1) At this time, Microsoft employees are welcome to use the website to line up speaking engagements with user groups, but are not eligible for financial assistance. 2) Anyone can register and use the website to line up speaking engagements with user groups, however you must receive and maintain a net score of 3+ positive ratings (we're implementing a thumbs up / thumbs down system) in order to receive financial assistance. These ratings are provided by the User Group leaders after the meeting has taken place. 8. Involvement by the User Group leaders is a key factor in the success of this program. Your job isn't done once you request a speaker. After you've had your meeting, it's critical that you go back to the website and take a very small survey. Doing this ensures that the speaker gets rated (and compensated if eligible) and also ensures that you can make another request, since you won't be able to make a new request if you have an old one outstanding. 9. What about Canada? We're definitely working on that. Unfortunately nothing new to report on that front, other than to say that we're trying. So... this is where things stand currently. We're working very quickly to get this in place and get speakers and groups together. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below and I'll answer them as quickly as possible. • InSync12 and Australia Visits: UX is Global, Regional, Everywhere!

  I attended the Australian Oracle User Group (AUSOUG) and Quest International User Group's InSync12 event in Melbourne, Australia: the user group conference for Oracle products in the ANZ region. I demoed Oracle Fusion Applications and then presented how Oracle crafted the world class Fusion Apps user experience (UX). I explained about the Oracle user experience design pattern strategy of uptake for all apps, not just Fusion, and what our UX pattern externalization strategy means for customers, partners, and ADF developers. A great conference, lots of energy, the InSync12 highlights for me were Oracle's Senior Vice President Cliff Godwin’s fast-moving Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) roadshow with the killer Oracle Endeca user experience uptake, and Oracle ADF product outreachmeister Chris Muir’s (@chriscmuir) session on Oracle ADF Mobile solution and his hands-on mobile app development showing how existing ADF/JDev skills can build a secure, code once-deploy-to-many-device hybrid app solution in minutes. Cliff Godwin shows off the Oracle Endeca integration with Oracle E-Business Suite. Chris Muir talked the talk and then walked the walked with Oracle ADF Mobile. Applications UX was mixing it up with the crowd at InSync12 too, showing off cool mobile UX solutions, gathering data for future innovations, and engaging with EBS, JD Edwards, and PeopleSoft apps customers and partners. User conferences such as InSync12 are an important part of our Oracle Applications UX user-centered design process, giving real apps users the opportunity to make real inputs and a way for us to watch and to listen to their needs and wants and get views on current and emerging UX too. Eric Stilan (@icondaddy) of Applications UX uses an iPad to gather feedback on the latest UX designs from conference attendees. While in Melbourne, I also visited impressive Oracle partner, Callista for a major ADF and UX pow-wow, and was the er, star of a very proactive event hosted by another partner Park Lane Information Technology (coordinated by Bambi Price (@bambiprice) of ODTUG) where I explained what UX is about, and how partner and customers can engage, participate and deploy that Applications UX scientific insight to advantage for their entire business. I also paired up with Oracle Australia in Sydney to visit key customers while there, and back at Oracle in Melbourne I spoke with sales consultants and account managers about regional opportunities and UX strategy, and came away with an understanding of what makes the Oracle market tick in Australia. Mobile worker solution development and user experience is hot news in Australia, and this was a great opportunity to team up with Chris Muir and show how the alignment of the twin stars of UX design patterns and ADF technology enables developers to make great-looking, usable apps that really sparkle. Our UX design patterns--or functional (UI) patterns, to use the developer world language--means that developers now have not only a great tool set to build apps on Oracle ADF/FMW but proven, tested usability solutions to solve common problems they can apply in the IDE too. In all, a whirlwind UX visit, packed with events and delivery opportunities, and all too short a time in the wonderful city of Melbourne. I need to get back there soon!   Being experts on all things Umbraco, we jumped at the chance to help our client, QV Offices, with their pressing signage predicament. They needed to display a sign in the entrance to their building and approached us for our advice. Of course it had to be electronic: displaying multiple names of their serviced office clients, meeting room bookings and on-the-pulse promotions. But with a winding Victorian staircase and minimal storage space how could the monitor be run, updated and managed? That’s where we came in…Raspberry PiUmbraco CMSAutomatic updatesAutomated monitor of the signPower saving when the screen is not in useMounting the screenThe screen that has been used is a standard LED low energy Full HD screen and has been mounted on the wall using it's VESA mounting points, as the wall is a stud wall we were able to add an access panel behind the screen to feed through the mains, HDMI and sensor cables.The Raspberry Pi is then tucked away out of sight in the main electrical cupboard which just happens to be next to the sign, we had an electrician add a power point inside this cupboard to allow us to power the screen and the Raspberry Pi.Designing the interface and editing the contentAlthough a room sign was the initial requirement from QV Offices, their medium term goal has always been to add online meeting booking to their website and hence we suggested adding information about the current and next day's meetings to the sign that would be pulled directly from their online booking system.We produced the design and built the web page to fit exactly on a 1920 x 1080 screen (Full HD in Portrait)As you would expect all the information can be edited via an Umbraco CMS, they are able to add floors, rooms, clients and virtual clients as well as add meeting bookings to their meeting diary.How we configured the Raspberry PiAfter receiving a new Raspberry Pi we downloaded the latest release of Raspbian operating system and followed the official guide which shows how to copy the OS onto an SD card from a Mac, we then followed the majority of steps on this useful guide: 10 Things to Do After Buying a Raspberry Pi.Installing ChromiumWe chose to use the Chromium web browser which for those who do not know is the open sourced version of Google Chrome. You can install this from the terminal with the following command:sudo apt-get install chromium-browserInstalling UnclutterWe found this little application which automatically hides the mouse pointer, it is used in the script below and is installed using the following command:sudo apt-get install unclutterAuto start Chromium and disabling the screen saver, power saving and mouseWhen the Raspberry Pi has been installed it will not have a keyboard or mouse and hence if their was a power cut we needed it to always boot and re-loaded Chromium with the correct URL.Our preferred command line text editor is Nano and I have assumed you know how to use this editor or will be able to work it out pretty quickly.So using the following command:sudo nano /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostartWe then changed the autostart file content to:@lxpanel --profile LXDE@pcmanfm --desktop --profile LXDE@xscreensaver -no-splash@xset s off@xset -dpms@xset s noblank@chromium --kiosk --incognito http://www.qvoffices.com/someURL@unclutter -idle 0The first few commands turn off the screen saver and power saving, we then open Cromium in Kiosk Mode (full screen with no menu etc) and pass in the URL to use (I have changed the URL in this example) We found a useful blog post with the Cromium command line switches.Finally we also open an application called Unclutter which auto hides the mouse after 0 seconds, so you will never see a mouse on the sign.We also had to edit the following file:sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.confAnd added the following line under the [SeatDefault] section:xserver-command=X -s 0 dpmsRefreshing the screenWe decided to try and add a scheduled task that would trigger Chromium to reload the page, at some point in the future we might well change this to using Javascript to update the content, but for now this works fine.First we installed the XDOTool which enables you to script Keyboard commands:sudo apt-get install xdotoolWe used the Refreshing Chromium Browser by Shell Script post as a reference and created the following shell script (which we called refreshing.sh):export DISPLAY=":0"WID=$(xdotool search --onlyvisible --class chromium|head -1)xdotool windowactivate ${WID}xdotool key ctrl+F5This selects the correct display and then sends a CTRL + F5 to refresh Chromium.You will need to give this file execute permissions:chmod a=rwx refreshing.shNow we have the script file setup we just need to schedule it to call this script periodically which is done by using Crontab, to edit this you use the following command:crontab -eAnd we added the following:*/5 * * * * DISPLAY=":.0" /home/pi/scripts/refreshing.sh >/home/pi/cronlog.log 2>&1This calls our script every 5 minutes to refresh the display and it logs any errors to the cronlog.log file.SummaryQV Offices now have a richer and more manageable booking system than they did before we started, and a great new sign to boot.How could we make sure that the sign was running smoothly downstairs in a busy office centre? • Time Machine (OSX) doesn't back up files in Mount Point or Disk Image File

  I found this Q&A (http://superuser.com/questions/148849/backup-mounted-drive-of-an-image-in-time-machine) and this prompted me to ask the following question: I have two disk images which are scripted to be mounted on login. These two disk images are always mounted to the same location. These two disk images are encrypted TrueCrypt volumes. Time Machine (TM) will only back up the disk images the first time they are mounted, but not after that. As I modify documents within the volumes throughout the day, the modified timestamps are adjusted properly. However, TM does not back them up. TM never backs up the mount points which are two folders within my home directory. Any ideas as to why neither the mount point or the image files are backed up? Do the image files have to be closed (unmounted) after being modified for TM to back them up? Thanks, Chris

• How can I find the Windows domain logon name of a user from within Outlook 2010?

  I need to figure out someone's login name for our domain, and I'd like to be able to do this from within Outlook 2010. I used to be able to do this from Outlook 2007 by right-clicking the user's name in an email message that they'd sent me, and clicking "Outlook Properties..." in the context menu. That would bring up this dialog, which contained what I need in the "alias" field: Now I've installed Outlook 2010. I want to do the same thing, but I can't seem to find a corresponding field. First, I don't see an explicit "Outlook Properties" menu option anymore, and what I think is the corresponding dialog looks completely different: It seems weird that, although I'm looking at the properties of my own name in the same email message in 2007 and 2010 in these screenshots, my name is shown differently in each -- Chris versus Christopher. That makes me think that Outlook isn't really looking in the same place to get this info in each case. So, can I get that "alias" field from within Outlook 2010?

• Why Haven’t NFC Payments Taken Off?

  With the EMV 2015 milestone approaching rapidly, there’s been renewed interest in smartcards, those credit cards with an embedded computer chip.  Back in 1996 I was working for a vendor helping Visa introduce a stored-value smartcard to the US.  Visa Cash was debuted at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and I firmly believed it was the beginning of a cashless society.  (I later worked on MasterCard’s system called Mondex, from the UK, which debuted the following year in Manhattan). But since you don’t have a Visa Cash card in your wallet, it’s obvious the project never took off.  It was convenient for consumers, faster for merchants, and more cost-effective for banks, so why did it fail?  All emerging payment systems suffer from the chicken-and-egg dilemma.  Consumers won’t carry the cards if few merchants accept them, and merchants won’t install the terminals if few consumers have cards. Today’s emerging payment providers are in a similar pickle.  There has to be enough value for all three constituents – consumers, merchants, banks – to change the status quo.  And it’s not enough to exceed the value, it’s got to be a leap in value, because people generally resist change.  ATMs and transit cards are great examples of this, and airline kiosks and self-checkout systems are to a lesser extent. Although Google Wallet and ISIS, the two leading NFC payment platforms in the US, have shown strong commitment, there’s been very little traction.  Yes, I can load my credit card number into my phone then tap to pay, but what was the incremental value over swiping my old card?  For it to be a leap in value, it has to offer more than just payment, which I can do very easily today.  The other two ingredients are thought to be loyalty programs and digital coupons, but neither Google nor ISIS really did them well. Of course a large portion of the mobile phone market doesn’t even support NFC thanks to Apple, and since it’s not in their best interest that situation is unlikely to change.  Another issue is getting access to the “secure element,” the chip inside the phone where accounts numbers can be held securely.  Telco providers and handset manufacturers own that area, and they’re not willing to share with banks.  (Host Card Emulation, which has been endorsed by MasterCard and Visa, might be a solution.) Square recently gave up on its wallet, and MCX (the group of retailers trying to create a mobile payment platform) is very slow out of the gate.  That leaves PayPal and a slew of smaller companies trying to introduce easier ways to pay. But is it really so cumbersome to carry and swipe (soon to insert) a credit card?  Aren’t there more important problems to solve in the retail customer experience?  Maybe Apple will come up with some novel way to use iBeacons and fingerprint identification to make payments, but for now I think we need to focus on upgrading to Chip-and-PIN and tightening security.  In the meantime, NFC payments will continue to struggle.

• UDP flooding multiple servers

  What do you suggest? Being UDP flooded as I write to multiple servers in different data centers in 5 different countries . Up to 250,000 packets a second. I believe Cisco routers 5505 would not handle that - (some of our datacenter hosters can offer them. Some have no firewalls to offer.) Our clients naturally have constant disconnects to the server they are on. Hacker started this about three weeks ago. Sometimes for a few hours - up to a few days. If we can't stop it hitting the server with firewalls then how do we stop the hacker - now there is the challenge! Update : Found some of the data centers offer up to 10 firewall rules but would their routers be able to handle the possible volume I am talking about? Thanks Chris

• HP DL160 vs DL360 for virtualization

  Hi, We're planning to consolidate our infrastructure (a dozen servers). We'll buy two or three identical new servers who will be setup as a XenServer pool. Load balancing and HA tools will monitor the pool and vMotion VMs in case of failure/overload. I know that the DL100 series of HP servers is cheaper than the DL300 serie (in every sense of the word). As we don't need local storage (we have a SAN) and can live with a temporary down server (provided that Xen Server HA tools work as advertized), what are the downsides going with the DL100 serie ? • Why aren't connections released by the tomcat AJP connector

  I have here a jboss with a web application. The tomcat is configured to use the ajp connector. Incoming connections are tunneled via an apache reverse proxy to the connector. Now I recognized that under heavy load the connector keeps a bunch of connections in "keep alive" mode for eternity and doesn't release them any more. With the normal HTTP connector the app did well, but now with the ajp connector we have regular app stallments. Can someone give me some advice where to start to look to resolve this issue? Why does the connector not release the connection again after idling for 300 secs? thanks, chris
