  I am using ipsec-tools/racoon to create my VPN. I am using racoon-tool to configure racoon.conf but when I run racoon-tool reload it only generates the first section - Global items. • XCA: sign IPsec certificates with own CA

  I'm trying to establish a LAN to LAN connection through a VPN tunnel. There's a Zywall at the remote office which will be responsible for establishing a connection to a Draytek at the main office. I'm able to establish the connection if I use shared keys, but I'd like to use certificates instead. I've downloaded the XCA application for Ubuntu which allows me to first create a CA certificate, and then sign "certificate signing reqests" using this CA. However, I'm uncertain if I am doing things right. More specifically<, which basic keys/extended keys should the CA certificate and the certificates themselves have? Right now I just skip selecting any keys at all, but is that right? All hints and help appreciated!

• SNMP counter issues with cisco RV082

  Does anyone else poll this router with SNMP? We are using firmware version: 2.0.0.19-tz We are having problems with the traffic counters, some of them appear to be implemented as 16 bit counter instead of 32 bit counters. The reason this is causing problems is that they roll over (at 65,000) to 0 in less than our minute polling cycle, really skewing our metrics. The counter for the Lan (interface 2) seems to be functioning properly, however interfaces 3 and 4 (WAN and DMZ / WAN2) rollover at 65000. But the log on is unsuccessful if I use my personal account on the server to map the drive. My personal account on the server is part of Administrators group. Can any one help me with this?

• VPN/AFP server for centralized TimeMachine backups

  I am a sysadmin for a small group of about 7 people who prefer Apple machines for their work. These machines are currently either a) not backed up at all, or b) backed up using Retrospect(Which I'm not very fond of). I don't really have the budget for anything fancy, and I'd like to keep it as user friendly as possible. Ideally I am thinking of a VPN server they can connect to(to keep the traffic secure, and because they work from home frequently) along with an AFP server for use with TimeMachine. The goal would be to get better backup coverage, along with user-initiated restores and overall ease of use. Does this seem like a reasonable idea? Has anyone done this before? Are there any obvious problems I've overlooked?

• How do you implement NAT-T passthrough on a Juniper SRX series Firewall?

  We have 3 juniper SRX-100 firewalls, they are configured like so: FW1 - FW2 - INTERNET - FW3 We would like to create an IPSEC tunnel between FW3 and FW1 passing through FW2 preferably using NAT-T. Is this possible? FW1 and FW2 have some strict access rules only allowing 1 port connected (it's a DMZ with a server in) so we can't just create a route based vpn between FW1 and FW2 to forward the traffic (otherwise all traffic will be forwarded) We know the tunnel is fine because we have managed to test it between FW1 and FW3 (without FW2 in the middle) so we know that the issue is to do with the 'passthrough' on FW2. Essentially, the question is - What options do we need to select on FW2 to enable it to pass through the IPSEC traffic straight to FW1? Many thanks in advance

• How to automatically restart RRAS service after OpenVPN

  I have OpenVPN set up on a Windows Server 2003 box using a routed configuration. This allows users to connect and access the work LAN subnet. There are remote hosts/services however that are only accessible when used via the work network. To enable access these, I push routes out to the clients to make sure traffic to these destinations goes across the VPN, and NAT the traffic using RRAS. This all works, except: if I restart the OpenVPN service, network traffic stops working until I restart the RRAS service as well. Is there a good way for me to make the RRAS service start/restart after OpenVPN? Are service dependencies the way to go? Obviously I could write a batch file to do this, but I'd like to make the process as bullet-proof and obvious as I can so it doesn't cause problems for other admins.

• Using two Cisco Aironet 1100's

  Is it possible to use two of these both providing connectivity to the same network name for additional signal by having one plugged into a hot data port and having the other only powered by the AC? It seems to have worked for one day, then it stopped and I have the middle light blinking, and the other "hot" one solid in the middle and flashing rapidly on the last light.

  All right, here is the deal: I'm connecting to a Windows 2003 Server using VPN. On this server, there is a remote SQL Server 2005 Express engine. I can connect to the database using Visual Studio 2008. What I can't do though, is connect to this same database with SQL Server 2005 Management Studio (Standard). I have checked the connection info a hundred times and still nothing. One thought: do VS ans SSMS use the same sql provider? Note: I'm running Windows 7 RC.   I find these words in pptp client source : Summary by Peter Mueller PPTP is known to be a faulty protocol. The designers of the protocol, Microsoft, recommend not to use it due to the inherent risks. Lots of people use PPTP anyway due to ease of use, but that doesn't mean it is any less hazardous. The maintainers of PPTP Client and Poptop recommend using OpenVPN (SSL based) or IPSec instead. (Posted on [1]2005-08-10 to the [2]mailing list) But as far as i know, there are many people use PPTP as a VPN, because there is no need to install client on windows, what do you think about pptp ?

However, - The data needs to be encrypted on the NAS itself (in case it gets stolen). - The connection to the NAS needs to be secure (VPN?). - The drive needs to appear as a drive under windows (so no https). • How does pptpd (poptop) or pppd work with eap-tls and mppe-128?

  To create a VPN I've installed pptpd on an Ubuntu domU (Debian domUs can also be created). MSCHAPv2 isn't a very strong authentication protocol so I'd like to use EAP-TLS. I've set up a FreeRADIUS server and certificates for EAP-TLS before (for use with WPA), and I've also set up a pptp server with mschap-v2 auth, but I can't figure out how to combine the two. Maybe pppd can use EAP-TLS on its own, but I can't find support for it in the Ubuntu package. If I need to patch the package, that's fine, I know how to patch Debian packages (provided the patch applies cleanly). Also, can MPPE still be used when pppd is configured to use EAP? Because it says in the manual several times that MPPE requires MSCHAP. However, other docs like this one: http://www.nikhef.nl/~janjust/ppp/ seem to refute that. The clients are running Mac OS X Leopard and GNU/Linux, there's no need to fix anything for Windows.

The installation error occours when adding the user "openvpn" in Centos. The error message is "useradd: canot open /etc/passwd" The detail of My "/etc/passwd" file: "-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1194 Oct 9 00:33 /etc/passwd" I am not quite familiar with Centos, so how can I add the user "openvpn" in order to setup the VPN service? I have successfully added my PC to the domain, but I cannot add my domain user account to the local admins. I have tried to do the following: Connect to the work domain using a Windows VPN Add my computer to the work domain Start right click on Computer Manage - go to Users and Groups right click on Administrators group and add my domain user The problem is that after adding my domain user to the Administrators group, I don't see my domain user under the Local Users group. When I try to log on as my domain user I get the following error message: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request Any ideas?

  Hi, We would like to have put a File Server in DataCentre to allow user to upload/download files when they are home. Since we have hundreds of users and would like to let the user to authenticate with the existing AD in our office. Basically, I will setup the IIS server to allow users to list various directories in the File Server based on their user group. For example, Group A will have list the D:\Files\A and the Group B will have list the D:\Files\B ...etc. After some initial study, I found that the PPTP based Site to Site VPN might fit our need to do the authentication part but I still don't have any idea on how to let them upload files to the server. Is there any suggestions such as any better option to do this (either authentication or upload part) or any area I need to be careful of? Thank you in advance.

  I want to install applications from my Mac OS X install disc, or be able to archive-install from it, but it's back at my house outside my current LAN. Is there a way I can remotely access my OS X install disc on my home Windows XP computer from my Snow Leopard? In my help manual it says I can do remote installs, or use another computer's disc drive remotely, but it has to be with another computer on the LAN. Is there a way to combine my mac's LAN and my windows' LAN? I think it has something to do with making a VPN; is there a way to do that which will work between Snow Leopard and XP, doesn't require additional hardware, and is preferably free? Thanks a lot!

  The problem with our server is that we need to use the bug ridden and awful AT&T network client, which causes our server to bluescreen once per 24 hours. Does any one know how to (or has a good guide) quickly set up a workstation running Windows server 2008 R2 as a proxy server. So this spare workstation would run AT&T and would act as a bridge between our server and the server that can be connected to only via the AT&T VPN software. And this way our own production server would not crash so often (or not at all) and the workstation can happily crash whenever it wants to.

• Is it possible to connect these machines with ssh tunnels or another mechanism?

  I am physically on a machine that is behind a firewall and cannot be ssh'd into. Let's call that PC. PC can connect out to two machines, one on AWS and one that is part of a vpn connection, call them A and V, respectively. A and V cannot talk to each other directly. I need to frequently move files between A and V and have been doing this by scp'ing to PC and then scp'ing from pc. Is there a better way to do this? A and V are linux but PC has cygwin.
