    If you are responsible for documenting your business practices, wouldn't it be nice to know if anyone is using the documentation? If the employees find it useful? You might want to consider surveying the users of the documentation on a regular basis. There are a number of free survey tools online (search for "free survey tools"), and you can have a survey ready in a matter of minutes. It's as simple as gathering a list of questions and a list of email addresses. For the questions, here are some suggestions. How often do you access the policy and procedure site? How useful is the site? How easy is it to navigate the site? How often are your questions answered on the site? What suggestions do you have to make the site more useful? You may want to consider just asking a few questions each month so that employees can complete the survey in less than 5 minutes (you'll get more responses). Make sure you have several comment boxes in the survey so that the employees can give suggestions. As the users of your documentation, the employees may have some terrific ideas that will enhance the usability of your policy and procedure site.     When building a .NET library, what's your exception handling policy? In specific, what's your policy about handling exceptions inside library calls and exposing them to calling code? Would you treat a library function as any other, thus letting all exceptions it can't handle flow out of it as-is? Would you create a custom exception for that library? Would you catch all exceptions and throw the library's exception instead? Would you set the original exception as the library's exception internal exception? How would the library dependence on a DB affect your exception-handling policy? What other guidelines and rules would you suggest?

  • Installing Win32 shared SxS policy via WiX 3.0 MSM fails for 2nd app

    I am attempting to author a merge module for use by multiple application installers to install a Win32 Shared SxS Assembly and its associated Policy. I'm using WiX 3.0 to generate the MSM and test MSIs. So far it works fine for the first app installer that runs … but the second app installer fails because the Policy file already exists (HRESULT: 0x800700B7). What requirement(s) for correct Win32 Shared SxS Policy installation am I missing? I have submitted WiX bug 3005301 for this (https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=642714&aid=3005301&group_id=105970) and posted VS2008 projects that reproduce the problem.     Quick version: New computer, attached to Windows domain, with SteadyState w/ Disk Protection turned on, cannot log on as domain user because Windows states 'system security log is full' Troubleshooting performed: disabled all 'restrictions' listed in SteadyState, cleared system security log, changed security log settings to overwrite entries when it becomes full, restarted computer to commit changes, verified changes were commited - still cannot log on as domain user, changed Documents and Settings folder to another partition, still cannot log on as domain user Let me know if you need a more detailed description of any steps performed.     The description for "Use mandatory profiles on the RD Session Host server" is a little ambiguous: This policy setting allows you to specify whether Remote Desktop Services uses a mandatory profile for all users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server. If you enable this policy setting, Remote Desktop Services uses the path specified in the Set path for Remote Desktop Services Roaming User Profile policy setting as the root folder for the mandatory user profile. All users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server use the same user profile. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, mandatory user profiles are not used by users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server. I have a situation where only some users need to use mandatory profiles for logging in to a Remote Desktop Session Host. If I have some users with ntuser.dat and some users ntuser.man in their roaming profile what will RD Session Host do To a user who has ntuser.man in their roaming profile and has the setting set to Disabled? To a user who has ntuser.dat in their roaming profile and has the setting set to Enabled?

  • Two different sites, same IP, same top-level domain, on IIS 7.5 -- one works and the other displays HTTP 404 error

    I'm running a Windows 2008 R2 box with IIS 7.5 as the web server. On IIS, I have two websites: mysubsite1.mysite.com and mysubsite2.mysite.com. There is only one IP on the server and both sites share this IP. Here is how I have the bindings configured: mysubsite1.mysite.com works fine. However, mysubsite2.mysite.com gives me the following error: Not Found HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found. Now, if I change the Host name field for mysubsite1.mysite.com to blank and restart the web server, both sites work! The question is why is the host name field for the first site causing an HTTP 404 error for the second site when both sites' Host name fields are filled? I would appreciate any insight. Thank you.

    Hi All, I want to change the behavior of eclipse's parent-first classloader policy to child-first classloader policy. The scenario would be : Plugin A has class C in dependent external jar. When the classloader of the jar looks for "META-INF" folder - it should find the META-INF folder of the jar and not the one found by its parent classloader - that is the plugin A's META-INF folder. So I want to change the classloader policy to 'child-first' rather than 'parent-first' Is it possible to do this by changing the plugin A's Manifest or plugin.xml?

    In Windows XP, there are two settings in Group Policy I'm looking at: Password must meet complexity requirements Store password using reversible encryption Both of these settings are under Local Computer Policy/Computer Config/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Account Policies/Password Policy. For the first one, I have found the setting in RSOP_SecurityEventLogSettingBoolean class in WMI. However, I can't find the latter. Does anybody know in which class in WMI can I read that particular setting?

  • How can I VPN into a domain and act as if it is local?

    I've looked and looked and the internet seems to have finally failed me, there's no information on my specific issue. I have two locations, and one server (sbs 2008); I need them to act like one physical LAN. I know it's possible, I just know how to set it up, or anything about VPNs, etc. So, just to clarify a bit more: 1 Small Business Server 2008 ~30 Computers with varying systems from Windows XP to 7 2 Physical Locations I use redirected folders, but since that would consume a lot of bandwith over VPN, I have a machine over there that can be the workhorse for storage. Users need to access e-mail and shared databases from this server (or possibly some form of DFS with aforementioned workhorse) from the other building. Is there a nice tutorial (or I nice person that wants to write it) online that can explain how to set up computers from an external network to act like they were in the LAN?

    Our school's VLE has a few problems when running in IE8/IE9's Compatibility View. Mainly it causes difficulties with uploading files. This problem is easily remedied by un-ticking the Display intranet sites in Compatibility View option from Internet Explorer's Compatibility View options. However, I'm unable to find a way of doing this en masse. I can't find anything regarding this in GPO - would a registry hack or similar do the trick? Thanks in advance,

  • Connecting to a subdomain severs the connection to the domain itself. What's going on?

    Hi all. We have a website on a third-party server (server leased and shared with other websites) and the server provides access to our SQL Server database through a subdomain in the form of mssql.DomainName.com. I was told to use SQL Management Studio Express to connect to this subdomain in order to manage the database. After a few tries and getting many "Timeout" messages, I finally manage to connect to the server; everything's fine. But now I can't connect to DomainName.com anymore. Trying to browse DomainName.com using Firefox, it tries to "lookup" DomainName.com address and fails, telling me "the server was not found". I have to disconnect Management Studio from the server and wait a couple of hour for DomainName.com to become available again, and after that, trying to reconnect to the SQL Server again repeats the scenario. While I can't browse DomainName.com directly, I can use a proxy to connect to it, meaning that the problem is somehow related to a DNS my computer tries to ask to translate the name to the corresponding IP. Anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    I have developed a WPF application which communicates with a set of self hosted WCF services which are under same domain and I use the following setup in the config files. <security mode="Transport"> <transport clientCredentialType="Windows" protectionLevel="EncryptAndSign" /> <message clientCredentialType="Windows" /> </security> I hosted the services on a server in different domain .I can achieve the communication by setting the security mode to "None" which is not ideal. Is there any other setting i can user for cross domain communication or i have to do with some trusted certificates ? I would be glad if some one can guide me because all the searches on google directed me to silverlight applications +Crossdomain.xml+WCF but i have't seen any combination of WPF on crossdomain environment.

  • Why would my domain admins turn off UAC? [closed]

    I'm a developer of internal software in our company, I've gotten used to UAC in Win7, I prefer to run with in enabled so that our software works correctly with it enabled. Sysadmins have recently pushed out GPO that turns it off every time we log-in. (So I turn it back on every time I log in.) I can imagine some people are annoyed by it and turn it off, but is that really a good company-wide decision? anyone annoyed by it (local admins) would already have permission to turn it of themselves.. right? On the other hand we don't have to worry creating UAC friendly software if no workstations or servers have it enabled. Is there a good reason for doing this? Other than reducing help-desk calls from users recently upgraded from XP? I can't see the upside of this decision, help me understand.

  • Wordpress Multisite- How to restrict a non-wordpress page only to one domain

    I am running three blogs from a wordpress multisite. Currently, I am developing a separate, non wordpress application. I want to link this application with blog1. I put the application in the subfoler of my root directory (The Wordpress multisite is installed in the root). I linked the application in the menu of blog1. So far so good. But, it is possible to access the application from all the three blogs. I want the application to be accessible only from blog1-domain/my-app/ but when I tried blog2-domain/my-app, it just opened normally. Generally, the application is accessible from all the three domains followed by /my-app. I don't think it is proper to go this way. Then, what can I do to restrict my app to be accessible only from a my blog1-domain/my-app ? Or am I not using a good blog structure?. I am open to all kind of suggestions. Thank you for your help.

    Hi folks, is it better to have seperate country specific domains (which costs more money) or subdomains which define the country, for better SEO? eg. stackoverflow.com stackoverflow.com.au stackoverflow.co.uk vs stackoverflow.com au.stackoverflow.com uk.stackoverflow.com Assumption: int the search engine web master tools, each subdomain are associated to a country. eg. au.stackoverflow.com is associated to the country Australia. cheers! Update I understand that both methods do work, especially when i utilize the assumption, listed above. The question is about: Which method is better? Is there such a small SEO difference between them? Is the first method way way way better than the second with getting better SEO results? Update #2 A number of folks have suggested that the following is a good/better approach: stackoverflow.com/ stackoverflow.com/au stackoverflow.com/uk By adding a country specific iso code to the end of the url/the first folder of the domain can be recognised as the country. But a number of SEO mates have suggested that this is a valuable waste of folder level space. Er.. how can i explain. Ok, it's been suggested by some SEO experts that if the number of levels or folders in the domain exceeds 5 then the page drops dramatically in importance. Basically, you don't want to make it deep. As such, adding the country as the first level can be considered a waste, especially when it can be handled by the domain OR subdomain - hence the question :) So, any more thoughts on this? (Maybe SO is the wrong place to ask this question?)

  • Google results show .info domain instead of .com

    I am on shared hosting currently and i registered this account with a .info domain as the main domain.... say MyDomain.info . However, the site runs from MyDomain.com . This is a cpanel based shared hosting account. MyDomain.info has nothing hosted at all... i.e no content files... MyDomain.com is setup as an Add On Domain and run from /public_html/MyDomain under MyDomain.info The problem is that when i type MyDomain as the keyword for search in Google , it shows result(s)for Mydomain.info although this is not the intended site and has no content hosted on itself. I tried to solve the issue by issuing a 301 permanent redirect from MyDomain.info to MyDomain.com, however Google keeps on displaying results as mydomain.info as the main site even after 1 month of the redirect. I want google to index MyDomain.com as the main site and remove MyDomain.info from the results. Also is this harmful from the seo point of view? How can i improve the seo if it is?
