• Code reviews for larger MVC.NET team using TFS

  I'm trying to find a good code review workflow for my team. Most questions similar to this on SO revolve around using shelved changes for the review, however I'm curious about how this works for people with larger teams. We usually have 2-3 people working a story (UI person, Domain/Repository person, sometimes DB person). I've recommended the shelf idea but we're all concerned about how to manage that with multiple people working the same feature. How could you share a shelf between multiple programmers at that point? We worry it would be clunky and we might easily have unintended consequences moving to this workflow. Of course moving to shelfs for each feature avoids having 10 or so checkins per feature (as developers need to share code) making seeing the diffs at code review time painful. Has anyone else been able to successfully deal with this? Are there any tools out there people have found useful aside from shelfs in TFS (preferably open-source)?

• Why did the aspnet_client folder come back in ASP.NET 4?

  I recently upgraded my MVC 1 project (ASP.NET 3.5) to MVC 2 (ASP.NET 4). I noticed there is now a folder "aspnet_client\system_web\4_0_30319" under the site root. This folder is empty... I'm just wondering if anyone knows why it was created. I remember the aspnet_client folder from the days of .NET 1.1, but I thought it was obsoleted when .NET 2.0 came out. For example, see the answers in these two stackoverflow posts: What is the aspnet_client folder in my ASP.NET website? What is the aspnet_client folder for under the IIS structure? • Compiler optimization of repeated accessor calls

  I've found recently that for some types of financial calculations that the following pattern is much easier to follow and test especially in situations where we may need to get numbers from various stages of the computation. public class nonsensical_calculator { ... double _rate; int _term; int _days; double monthlyRate { get { return _rate / 12; }} public double days { get { return (1 - i); }} double ar { get { return (1+ days) /(monthlyRate * days) double bleh { get { return Math.Pow(ar - days, _term) public double raar { get { return bleh * ar/2 * ar / days; }} .... } Obviously this often results in multiple calls to the same accessor within a given formula. I was curious as to whether or not the compiler is smart enough to optimize away these repeated calls with no intervening change in state, or whether this style is causing a decent performance hit. • How to Track F5/Refresh in ASP.Net

  I am using VS 2005, C# 2, ASP.Net 2.0 I am unable to find out how to track that user pressed F5/Ctrl+F5/ Open a new Window(Ctrl + N) in ASP.Net. I know that there is a Page.IsPostBack property, which tells that a page is loaded in response to an action taken by user. I am just curious to know, that why isn't there a property as IsRefresh or Page.IsRefresh in ASP.Net, which will return true, whenever user takes any of the above actions. Is there a way to know this? Actually my problem is that i have a DLL using which all of my aspx pages are inherited, I have to insert some values in a table whenever the page is opened for the first time that's it, if user just opens the page or do not take any action, an entry should be inserted into the database, but as far as I have tried, I controlled it anyhow using the Page.IsPostBack property, but I got stuck in the refresh case, as it is inserting records unconditionally.

• Google Bot information?

  Does anyone know any more details about google's web-crawler (aka GoogleBot)? I was curious about what it was written in (I've made a few crawlers myself and am about to make another) and if it parses images and such. I'm assuming it does somewhere along the line, b/c the images in images.google.com are all resized. It also wouldn't surprise me if it was all written in Python and if they used all their own libraries for most everything, including html/image/pdf parsing. Maybe they don't though. Maybe it's all written in C/C++. Thanks in advance-

• What technologies should I focus on to work as a developer in Japan?

  I'm thinking of one day moving to Japan and I was wondering if anyone here has any experience working there. I'm curious as to what languages/technology are popular there for web development and software development. I have heard Ruby is/was strong there due to its founder being Japanese. What would you recommend someone focus on if they wanted to work as a developer in Japan? I have heard Microsoft has a strong base in Japan, but my guess is that whatever platform has supported unicode or Shift-JIS the best would be the strongest.

• Django 1.2 object level permissions - third party solutions?

  Since Django 1.2 final is almost out, I am curious if there are already projects that use the new object level permissions / row level permissions system. [django-authority][1] which is a possible solution for Django up to 1.1 has not been updated for a while, and does not (yet) use the new permissions system. It seems to me that Django-Authority is in a comatose state. Does someone know about upcoming or maybe even finished solutions? • Why does does my stack overflow error occur after 518669 specifically?

  I created a java program to count up toward infinity: class up { public static void up (int n) { System.out.println (n) ; up (n+1) ; } public static void main (String[] arg) { up (1) ; } } i didn't actually expect it to get there but the thing that i noticed that was a bit curious was that it stopped at the same number each time: 518669 what is the significance of this number? (or of this number +1 i suppose). (also as a bit of an aside question, I've been told that the way i format my code is bad [indentation and such] what am i doing that isn't desirable?)

  Moles is an isolation framework created by Microsoft. A cool feature of Moles is that it can "mock" static/non-virtual methods and sealed classes (which is not possible with frameworks like Moq). • Are stack based arrays possible in C#?

  Let's say, hypothetically (read: I don't think I actually need this, but I am curious as the idea popped into my head), one wanted an array of memory set aside locally on the stack, not on the heap. For instance, something like this: private void someFunction() { int[20] stackArray; //C style; I know the size and it's set in stone } I'm guessing the answer is no. All I've been able to find is heap based arrays. If someone were to need this, would there be any workarounds? Is there any way to set aside a certain amount of sequential memory in a "value type" way? Or are structs with named parameters the only way (like the way the Matrix struct in XNA has 16 named parameters (M11-M44))?

  I'm curious why only some System.Web.UI.WebControl controls implement certain interfaces when they have the same properties of an interface. For instance, there are plenty of controls that have a Text property but only the following implement ITextControl: Label Literal DataBoundLiteral TextBox ListControl (TextBox and ListControl actually implement IEditableTextControl which implements ITextControl) TableCell, Button, HyperLink and others don't so I have to write code like this ITextControl textControl = control as ITextControl; TableCell tableCell = control as TableCell; if (textControl != null) { textControl.Text = value; } else if (tableCell != null) { tableCell.Text = value; } instead of this control.Text = value; Was this a design decision or an oversight?

• Are there any real benefits to including javascript dynamically rather than as script tags at the bo

  I've read that including the scripts dynamically may provide some better performance, however i'm not really seeing that on the small local tests I'm doing. I created a jquery plugin to dynamically load other plugins as necessary and am curious as to if this is actually a good idea.   Hi, I'm trying to scroll a textbox using the form's WndProc method. The code I've come up with so far, after scouring the internet, looks like this: private void ScrollTextBox() { scrollMessage = Message.Create(TabContents.Handle, 0x00B6, new IntPtr(0x0003), new IntPtr(0x0000)); this.WndProc(ref scrollMessage); } where TabContents is a TextBox. For some reason, nothing happens when i call this method. I'd like to know why. I realise that i can accomplish the same with the MoveToCaret method, but I'm curious why this is not working.

  I'm using Oracle Advanced Queues via JMS from within Websphere App Server.   I've been wondering this for some time. As the title say, which is faster, the actual function or simply raising to the half power? UPDATE This is not a matter of premature optimization. This is simply a question of how the underlying code actually works. What is the theory of how Python code works? I sent Guido van Rossum an email cause I really wanted to know the differences in these methods. My email: There are at least 3 ways to do a square root in Python: math.sqrt, the '**' operator and pow(x,.5). I'm just curious as to the differences in the implementation of each of these. When it comes to efficiency which is better? His response: pow and ** are equivalent; math.sqrt doesn't work for complex numbers, and links to the C sqrt() function. As to which one is faster, I have no idea...

• Can 2 different applications use the same database?

  Without additional context, the answer is "no", I think. Here is the context. I want to have a free version and a premium version of the same application. When people buy the application, I want them to be able to "upgrade" without losing their data, i.e. the premium version should install over the free version. I want to use the same code base and just switch a setting to build the premium version. Andoid Market does not let me convert a free app to a paid app, so the trivial option is not available. I am curious if someone has tried this successfully. How does Android Market identify an application - will it think that the premium version is a different app and just install it in parallel?

• Graph API - Get events by owner/creator

  Is there a way with the Facebook Graph API to get a list of all events created by a single profile? Our client creates a bunch of events and we want to pull a list of them all. I said that they would just have to make sure they set themselves to be attending the event, because then I can easily pull the list of events that profileId is attending, but I'm curious if there's another way. Maybe an FQL query? They look to require a query on the primary key though. And what would that FQL query look like if that's the way to do it??

• LINQ query checks for null

  I have a userList, some users don't have a name (null). If I run the first LINQ query, I got an error saying "object reference not set to an instance of an object" error. var temp = (from a in userList where ((a.name == "john") && (a.name != null)) select a).ToList(); However, if I switch the order by putting the checking for null in front, then it works without throwing any error: var temp = (from a in userList where ((a.name != null) && (a.name == "john")) select a).ToList(); Why is that? If that's pure C# code (not LINQ), I think both would be the same. I don't have SQL profiler, I am just curious what will be the difference when they are being translated on SQL level.

  Are there any standard or "best practice" ways of limiting feature functionality for a particular application? Example: We have a product with a variety of features, and our customers can pick and choose which features they would like to use, and the cost of the product varies based on which features they are actually using. In the past, we have distributed along with our software installer an encrypted license file that contains information about the customer, as well as the collection of features that they have enabled. In code, we read from the license file and enable the functionality according to the license file. This seems to work fine, except there a few disadvantages: Upgrading users with new functionality can be sort of a pain If a particular feature shows up in multiple places throughout the application, a developer might not realize that this feature should be licensed, and forget to check the license file before granting functionality to the user If the license file becomes corrupted, deleted, moved, renamed, etc. the application will not run We're getting ready to roll out a new set of features, and I was just curious what others in the community have done to tackle this problem?

• Is regex too slow? Real life examples where simple non-regex alternative is better

  I've seen people here made comments like "regex is too slow!", or "why would you do something so simple using regex!" (and then present a 10+ lines alternative instead), etc. I haven't really used regex in industrial setting, so I'm curious if there are applications where regex is demonstratably just too slow, AND where a simple non-regex alternative exists that performs significantly (maybe even asymptotically!) better. Obviously many highly-specialized string manipulations with sophisticated string algorithms will outperform regex easily, but I'm talking about cases where a simple solution exists and significantly outperforms regex. What counts as simple is subjective, of course, but I think a reasonable standard is that if it uses only String, StringBuilder, etc, then it's probably simple.

• Rendering plain text through PHP

  Hi, For some reason, I want to serve my robots.txt via a PHP script. I have setup apache so that the robots.txt file request (infact all file requests) come to a single PHP script. The code I am using to render robots.txt is: echo "User-agent: wget\n"; echo "Disallow: /\n"; However, it is not processing the newlines. How to server robots.txt correctly, so search engines (or any client) see it properly? Do I have to send some special headers for txt files? EDIT: Now I have the following code: header("Content-Type: text/plain"); echo "User-agent: wget\n"; echo "Disallow: /\n"; which still does not display newlines (see http://sarcastic-quotes.com/robots.txt ). • How to use YQL to merge 2 RSS feeds sorted by pubDate?

  Seeing that YQL is being promoted as a good way to do things, I was curious as to how to use YQL to fetch and merge 2 different feeds into one (sorted by pubDate). It's pretty trivial to fetch 2 feeds but it turns out that the feeds are just concatenated together and not merged. • setting library include paths in c++

  Hi all, I just installed gd2 using mac ports (sudo install gd2), which installed libraries in the following places: /opt/local/include/gd.h /opt/local/lib/libgd.dylib (link) /opt/local/lib/libgd.la /opt/local/lib/libgd.a So when I create my c++ app I add '#include "gd.h"', which throws: main.cpp:4:16: error: gd.h: No such file or directory If I set gd.h as an absolute path (as above)(not a solution, but was curious), I am thrown: g++ -L/opt/local/include -L/opt/local/lib main.o Heatmap_Map.o Heatmap_Point.o -o heatmap Undefined symbols: "_gdImagePng", referenced from: _main in main.o "_gdImageLine", referenced from: _main in main.o "_gdImageColorAllocate", referenced from: _main in main.o _main in main.o "_gdImageDestroy", referenced from: _main in main.o "_gdImageCreate", referenced from: _main in main.o "_gdImageJpeg", referenced from: _main in main.o ld: symbol(s) not found So, I understand this means that ld can not find the libraries it needs (hence trying to give it hints with the "-L" values). So after giving g++ the -L hints and the absolute path in #include, I can get it to work, but I don't think I have to do this, how can I make g++/ld search int eh right places for the libraries?
