  I'm reading the Monads chapter in Real World Haskell (chapter 14). A function is defined as follows: type RandomState a = State StdGen a getRandom :: Random a => RandomState a getRandom = get >>= \gen -> let (val, gen')= random gen in put gen' >> return val I don't really understand the purpose of the get and put functions here. I rewrote the function as following which seems to do the same thing and is more concise: getRandom2 :: Random a => RandomState a getRandom2= State $ \ s -> random s So my question is: What is the purpose of get and put?

• Implementing a multi-state planner

  I've been asked to develop a system wherein employees can mark on a form their availability on a given day of the week - for instance an employee could mark themselves as available on a given time on a given week, and unavailable on some other time. It looks a little like this: Currently this works by rendering checkboxes within the table, picking up click events in each cell and marking the checkbox and hence the cell appropriately. I'm using the JQuery "click n drag checkbox" plugin from here. However, I've been informed that there could well be more than two states for a given cell (for instance available, unavailable, available in a given circumstance), in which case binding to a checkboxes checked value isnt going to be a lot of help. I've never used javascript or asp.net before and am unsure as to the best way to approach this problem. Ideally I could stick a data structure behind each cell which I could update to a certain state and then get my cell colour by binding to this - however I'm at something as a loss as how to best achieve this.

One of them is persistence of the View’s state. For instance, if the Model, being a domain object, does not know anything about the UI, and the View does not implement any business logic, then where would we store the state of the View’s elements such as selected items? Fowler comes up with a solution in the form of a Presentation Model pattern. I wonder why Presenter can't hold View state? It already holds all View logic. As far as I understand, in MVC and MVP the state is kept in View. In PM and MVVM the state is kept in the Presentation Model. Why can't Presenter follow PM in this particular case and contain the state of the view?   I'm wondering about the current support there is in Ruby for semantic web technologies. Is there good RDF options? It seems that the last surveys done were circa 2007 ( http://paul-classic.stadig.name/2007/10/26/the-state-of-rdf-support-in-ruby-2007/ ). Is Redland's RDF wrappers the best way to go for RDF support - all the other projects mentioned in that aging article seem to be unsupported or dropped. Is Ruby perhaps a bad choice if one which to pursue projects pertaining to the semantic web?

• Idioms for a three-state toggle?

  I have a table column where each row has one of three states, and the purpose of the row is to offer manipulation AND display of this property with three states. My current development view is to have three tightly packed radio buttons with labels at the head of the columns (and every 50 rows or so) and onClick they send an AJAX request and thar she blows. This is fugly. Is there a standard idiom for a control like this? I'm currently mocking up something similar to the iPhone on/off toggle, but with a "middle" state. Any input would be welcome.

  Hi all. I'm trying to get the green box that appears on the second click of a tri-state checkbox to be red, and also to fill up the box. • Searching Natural Language Sentence Structure

  What's the best way to store and search a database of natural language sentence structure trees? Using OpenNLP's English Treebank Parser, I can get fairly reliable sentence structure parsings for arbitrary sentences. What I'd like to do is create a tool that can extract all the doc strings from my source code, generate these trees for all sentences in the doc strings, store these trees and their associated function name in a database, and then allow a user to search the database using natural language queries. So, given the sentence "This uploads files to a remote machine." for the function upload_files(), I'd have the tree: (TOP (S (NP (DT This)) (VP (VBZ uploads) (NP (NNS files)) (PP (TO to) (NP (DT a) (JJ remote) (NN machine)))) (. .))) If someone entered the query "How can I upload files?", equating to the tree: (TOP (SBARQ (WHADVP (WRB How)) (SQ (MD can) (NP (PRP I)) (VP (VB upload) (NP (NNS files)))) (. ?))) how would I store and query these trees in a SQL database? I've written a simple proof-of-concept script that can perform this search using a mix of regular expressions and network graph parsing, but I'm not sure how I'd implement this in a scalable way. And yes, I realize my example would be trivial to retrieve using a simple keyword search. The idea I'm trying to test is how I might take advantage of grammatical structure, so I can weed-out entries with similar keywords, but a different sentence structure. For example, with the above query, I wouldn't want to retrieve the entry associated with the sentence "Checks a remote machine to find a user that uploads files." which has similar keywords, but is obviously describing a completely different behavior.

• Facebook, Flash and maintaining state

  So here's the situation: I have a Flash application I'm deploying to facebook as a canvas app. There are various states within this app - different "pages", sort of. I want to be able to share this app with other users using Facebook's baked-in sharing mechanism. However, I want each state to have its own share button. That way when someone clicks Share on page 3 they are actually sharing page 3, not the root of the whole application. Does anyone know if Facebook exposes some mechanism by which this could be possible? It would be as simple as passing a string into the iFrame that holds the canvas app, so I could load it in as a FlashVar and work from there. I'm kind of beating my head against the wall - does this request make sense, and has anyone tackled anything like this before? Thanks!

In IIS web application setting, i go to "Session State" and set session state as "SQL Server" and provide connection string. In each web application web.config, i add <sessionState mode="SQLServer" allowCustomSqlDatabase="false" sqlConnectionString="data source=server;user id=user;password=password" cookieless="false" timeout="7200" /> I create a session , Session["Data"] = "test" in Web App A and go to Web App B in the same browser to print it Response.Write(Session["Data"]); It shows NOTHING. I can see there are data in table : ASPStateTempApplications and ASPStateTempSessions under ASPState Database. Also, i dont see any error in event log. Can anyone think anything i may do wrong?   im working on a Windows Phone 7 Application that communicates with a Azure hosted WCF service. Everything works fine in communication and so on. But i want to handle the situation when the Service is not online. Now the WP7 App has a main screen with a login. After clicking the "Login" button the Application sends the credentials to the WCF Service which communicates with a Database. And now my question is, is there a way to get the online/offline state of the WCF Service? So i could give feedback to the user and the application wouldnt crash (: Thx alot for any answer!

• Initial state of autoCreateRowSorter in Swing JTable

  I have this JTable on my Swing app with the autoCreateRowSorter enabled. My table only has 3 columns, two strings and one int, it works well for all of them when I click the column headers. However, I'm looking for way to do it programatically. I wanted to set the "initial state" for this table. With the Windows look and feel, the column header (when sorted) has a little arrow showing the sort order. But at startup that doesn't show, I have to do one initial click. How can I do that by code?

• Does anyone else think instance variables are problematic in database-backed applications?

  It occurs to me that state control in languages like C# is not well supported. By this, I mean, it is left upto the programmer to manage the state of in-memory objects. A common use-case is that instance variables in the domain-model are copies of information residing in persistent storage (i.e. the database). Clearly this violates the single point of authority principle, and "synchronisation" has to be managed by the developer. I envisage a system where instead of instance variables, we have simple public access/mutator methods marked with attributes that link them to the database, and where reads and writes are mediated by a framework that decides whether to hit the database. Does such a system exist? Am I completely missing the point, or is there some truth to this idea?

• how to save state of dynamically created editTexts

  I'm stuck at how to save the state of my EditTexts on screen orientation. Currently if text is inputted into the EditTexts and the screen is orientated, the fields are wiped (as expected). I am already calling onSaveInstanceState and saving a String, but I have no clue on how to save the EditTexts which are created in code and then retrieve them and add them to the EditTexts when redrawing the activity. • Do private classes need to be accessed by properties?

  Currently we put Domain Objects into our ASP.NET Sessions. Now we considering moving from InProc sessions to state server. This requires that all objects inside session are serializable. Instead to annotate all objects with the [Serializable] attribute, we thought about creating custom-session objects (DTO Session Objects?), which only contain the information we need: CONS: Entities must be reloaded, which requires additional DB round-trips PROS: Session State is smaller Session information is more specific (could be a CON) No unneeded annotation of Domain-Entities What do you think? Should we use some kind of DTOs to store inside the session, or should we stick with god old entities?

  As a programmer of data-entry forms of all kinds, I often find myself making fields for things like Country: <choose from list>, State: <choose from list>, Race/Ethnicity: <choose from list>. Consider: Perhaps a list the 50 United States names is an easy thing to find (does one include DC?) , but the countries are not. Nearly every site you find has a differing list with all of the political goings on over the years, and they become outdated quickly. What's the best/common practice regarding population of these kinds of lists? Where does this data come from if it's not given in the specs?

• How a batch file runs on a remote machine started by PSEXEC

  I am having an issue running a Batch file on a remote machine suing PSEXEC. The file runs but does not run like it does when run through remote desktop. The batch runs a file which is a 32 bit application, which opens multiple 16bit applications, this should all run under one ntvdm.exe (In one Memory Space). Through remote desktop the batch file runs under the explorer process, and works correctly opening only one ntvdm.exe. Using PSEXEC the batch runs but not under the explorer process, a separate ntvdm.exe is open for each process. I found running the batch from explorer in PSEXEC works, but comes up with a "File Download - Security Warning" eg. psexec.exe" \compname -u username -p passowrd -s -d -i 0 explorer C:\Program.bat I want to be able to run the batch successfully without receiving warnings, it is a local warning and not a network share warning. Possible to recreate warning typing "explorer C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" in Run I would like to know if anyone knows of a way to get PSEXEC to open the batch file to run as though it was started by explorer. Or a way of removing the local "File Download - Security Warning" Thanks

• Linux machine can't find its tape drive

  I have an older HP NetServer LPr with what is apparently a Symbios SCSI card connecting to a Quantum SuperLoader 3 that is DLT based. From time to time, we seem to lose the connection to the autoloader. It's usually due to flaky power, but not totally sure why; sometimes when this happens the Autoloader's LED's are orange and it needs to be power cycled. The annoying workaround currently is to reboot the machine. As it is our production VPN and DNS server in addition to being our backup server, this is less than optimal. In Debian (Sarge) is there not some command one can type to get the card to notice that it has the autoloader connected again? dcr1:/proc# grep -i symbios /proc/pci SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c895 (rev 1). dcr1:/proc# uname -a Linux dcr1 2.4.27-3-686 #1 Tue Dec 5 21:03:54 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux dcr1:/proc# mt status mt: /dev/tape: No such device dcr1:/proc# ls -l /dev/tape lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 2007-02-07 16:01 /dev/tape -> /dev/st0 dcr1:/proc# That mt status command will show the actual st0 status when things are working correctly. The No such device message is usually the second clue that we need to reboot - the first clue is usually that the backups didn't run.

• Make dhcp assign same IP and hostname for different interfaces at one machine

  I have a feeling that question itself looks stupid but it is not. Please let me clarify. I have dynamic DNS with BIND and NIS configured at my LAN and have laptop which I am using in both wireless and wired mode. I mean that sometimes I have to use wired interface to achieve higher throughput but most of time I don't need it and using wireless mode. Everything works great. Issue is that I want both interfaces get same IP from DHCP. Just for convenient firewall setup. If I add both hosts to dhcp in this manner # bt wireless host bt { hardware ethernet 00:1f:1f:62:60:28; fixed-address 172.16.77.110; } # bt wired host bt { hardware ethernet 00:14:22:b7:5a:de; fixed-address 172.16.77.110; } DHCP says logs following message dhcpd: Dynamic and static leases present for 172.16.77.110 dhcpd: Remove host declaration bt-wired or remove 172.16.77.110 dhcpd: from the dynamic address pool for 172.16/16 Host records are added outside of any subnet, but it makes no difference if I put them there, effect is still the same. This is not critical but either is not my whim because even if DHCP seems to work fine for that "bt" host, I cannot make connection TO it from remote machine anymore with this definitely incorrect DHCP config. I'd be thankful if one spares a minute for advice about how to configure DHCPD correctly. UPDATE. I realize that there's a soulution to assign different hostname in DHCP config but would like to use benefits of short host names.
