• Shortcut for enabling / disabling Greasemonkey (or specific script)

  talking about firefox here ... I don't use Greasemonkey on any other browser, but if you know, do add info for those as well I use Greasemonkey daily ... having some 20 scripts loaded all the time which save me a ton of grief. But, some of them I sometimes don't need ... few examples: - I use Google Image Status Reporter & Direct Images (links you directly to image file) ... but sometimes I want to go to the page where the image is ... - GReader Minimalist Style ... until I actually need to check the trends and some stuff it hides - there are other examples but these two first sprang to mind, since I just were thinking about that ... To put the long story short ... sometimes I would like a shortcut to disable Greasemonkey, so I don't have to go into the menubar and so on (which I also have half hidden for space) ... anyone knows of any, or how one could create one ?

  I was recently assigned reading from the Tanenbaum-Torvalds debates in my OS class. In the debates, Tanenbaum makes some predictions: Microkernels are the future x86 will die out and RISC architectures will dominate the market (5 years from then) everyone will be running a free GNU OS I was a one year old when the debates happened, so I lack historical intuition. Why have these predictions not panned out? It seems to me, that from Tanenbaum's perspective, they're pretty reasonable predictions of the future. What happened so that they didn't come to pass?

• Why is my PC boot time slow when USB HDD attached?

  I have a USB Hard disk that I am using as a secondary drive just for extra storage. When this is attached and I start my PC the second screen says searching for mass storage dives for about 5 minutes before continuing on. The same happens when I have a USB pen disk attached upon boot. If I attach the device after the PC has loaded then it is very quick however plugging and unplugging is not ideal. Is there away to disable this in the BIOS as I cannot instantly see an option. On boot it informs me I have an American Trends AMIBIOS in the BIOS setup it states the version as v02.58 2006. This is running on a ASUS MV2 Motherboard.

  I just learnt a crash course from an institute for Core and Advanced Core Concepts in Java. I asked them what are all the algorithms, I need to know? They said: In Java there are more methods, you don't need to code more as in C/C++. After finishing core concepts in Java, I just passed on with more method usages from pre-defined classes in packages. So what's the next part I have to do, if the above mentioned is perfectly true (or) false based on the current expectations of IT Java programmers market? FYI: I'm fundamentally from the Electronics background, so please do excuse my ignorance.

• How come there is still so much programming work?

  First I'd like to say that I am not pretty sure that this question will meet the guidelines. I think it can goes under the "Freelancing and business concerns" bullet, but I am not sure. Anyway, I will give it a shot. I wonder how the programming jobs hasn't yet "dried" because of the software evolution, for example, I am a developer myself, which means that I do care about software (I mean I am not of the type of guys that needs a computer mainly to just browse the Internet), and still I wouldn't mind if I never receive any more updates on my Ubuntu machine. I find that it provides everything I need, and while the updates provide various bug fixes/improvements, I wouldn't mind using it with it's current state for the rest of my life, for 2 years of Ubuntu usage I have never bumped at a serious bug/problem. Another example is Windows, almost half of it's users still use XP, which is practically ancient, yet they find it satisfying all their needs (and I agreee with them). I could go with many more examples, but by now you are understanding my point and my question. While new "trends" appears all of the time (like a new mobile OS) which runs on new platforms and requires some fresh development work, still the majority of the software effort goes in to what I consider as "completed projects", or at least a state of a project which is enough to be considered as completed. Do you have an explanation ? I can't think of the right tags for this question, please edit it the way you find it to be most appropriate. Thanks.

  On Android Market i.e. GooglePlay, there used to be a page with the latest new games. So every game had a chance to get noticed and make its way up especially if it was good. But now I see "top new free" page and no more the latest apps. I don't understand how can be "top new" Anybody knows how this works? If there are no more pages with the very latest uploaded games then the new apps will be barely seen to exist even if they are excellent, and new programmers have very little chance of getting noticed. • How you choose your first job as a programmer? [on hold]

  For Brief I am a recently graduated CS student. I am looking for a job these days, but I have no idea what kind of software development jobs I like(embedded system,web development or else...). And I am looking for your advice. Here is a little more While I was a student, I had an one year internship experience as a system engineer in a semi-conductor company where I wrote Linux driver, tuned system performance, etc.. I was happy about this experience as it allowed me to deepen my understanding of the operating system and different low level things. And I thought "Em, I will continue in the embedded area after I graduate". At the end of my study, I am doing an another internship in web development, both front-end and back-end. And I also enjoys a lot the process of learning new things and making it work (Backbone, Node, socketio, etc..). Now, when I am looking for a software development position, I do not know what to apply! All I know is that I want a job which allows me to keep up with the trends instead of repeating. But besides this, I've no idea what specific type of job I want to do. Turn back to embedded system? Continue with web development? Change to other promising areas(data mining)? All these development positions makes no big difference to me. But I think this is not good and I need some criteria at choosing. So I am looking for advice and I would really appreciate if you can share your experience.

  I wonder, what options do I have in the following situation. In the course of the several projects I realised the need in some auxilary software product (related to testing of the main products). I applied a creative approach to the matter and implemented a system which I think has a potential and looking promising (maybe not on the market but at least among some interested supporters). I have even more ideas related to this system and continue developing at my free and work time. It has become a work and hobby at the same time. Unfortunately, this work basically has nothing in common with the company's business and there is no way this will be organized in a form of standard development process and be presented to costumers as a product.   Can add-ons have registered names in Google Chrome add-ons? I created a Youtube add-on and would like to add the Youtube term in my add-on name to better gain attention from users. I want to use it in the purpose of "fair use". Mozilla Add-ons are loose in restrictions about names but I see that there are not many add-ons containing Youtube or Facebook inside Chrome Market.   Sorry for the confusing question, I'm not sure how to word it right: here's a mock sample of my data Name: Cheeseburger Date: 1/20/2011 Stock: 30 Price: 200 Name: Hamburger Date: 1/20/2011 Stock: 12 Price: 180 Name: Cheeseburger Date: 1/21/2011 Stock: 31 Price: 210 ... I will have to make a table in excel or access capable of looking up the stock and price trends of a particular brand through time. Trouble is, I have two independent variables (Stock, Price) and two known dependent variables (Name, Date). So, I cannot use a simple table where the x axis is the name, y axis is the time, and the cells represent a quantity - each cell have to represent two quantities (Stock, Price) Does anyone know how to do that? • What should I do with my programming project?

  I've been working on a top secret project that has potential of becoming very popular. No one has done anything like it. The problem is I have no motivation to finish it, and its about 70% done. I also don't have the ability to sell & market the product. The documentation is a pain to write. I just want to finish the project , receive my reward and move on to other things. I know that if I were to release it as a product I'm going to have to do support, and do bug fixes. No thank you! I've thought of making it open source but I'm failing to see the benefits. My hard work is just going to be up for grabs isn't it? How can I abandon my project whilst getting rewarded for the work I've done so far?
