  Sorry for the "noob" question, but... About how many medium-sized websites with average traffic could this server hold? Just like the average website, kind of like a small business site. How many sites could this server hold, but still maintain nice, decent speed?   I have a old computer, and I want to buy a big LCD. The best I've found so far is Viewsonic's 24" LCD TFT monitor. So will it run without any problems, or do I need to upgrade the video cards or something as well? The computer is not too old: it has P4 board and celeron processor, with 128 graphics memory. And in display properties, it says that the maxium that I can use is 1280 x 1024 resolution. I am noob hardware-wise, so need help on this stuff. Thanks

• How many nginx/fastcgi processes do you use?

  I have a drupal-based website on a VPS with 1GB RAM and 1Ghz processor share. The webserver is nginx along with php-fastcgi. Currently I am using 10 nginx and 13 php-fastcgi processes. The server load is high most of the times while half of the RAM is unused. The CPU usage rarely reaches 80%. I have tried some other combinations of nginx/php-fastcgi but am not sure what is the optimal combination because I am quite ignorant about what's going on below the surface. So I appreciate if you could share your experience or give me some clues.

• Fedora 16 Running Hot

  Since switching from Windows 7 to Fedora 16, my laptop has been running incredibly hot (by the air exhaust). The laptop is an Asus K73S. Running 'sensors', I receive: acpitz-virtual-0: 75.0 celsius nouveau-pci-0100: 66.0 celsius asus-isa-0000: 75.0 celsius The only CPU hog is Firefox at 30 - 40% on average. My GPU information (from lspci) is: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Process or Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09). Running lspci | grep -i VGA, returns: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF106 [GeForce GT 555M SDDR3] (rev a1) I don't notice a huge difference running without the battery, but it does seem a little cooler. • RAID 5 heavy IO hard freezes Ubuntu: Why?

  I have a software RAID 5 partition on LVM in Ubuntu (desktop, actually, but I'm using it as a server). I have been rsyncing a ton of data to it, and the computer was hard freezing, as in I needed to press "Reset". So I thought it was rsync. But I decided I'd try a dd if=/dev/zero of=/path/to/raid5 and sure enough, the computer locked up. Did an identical dd to a JBOD partition on the same machine, and it didn't crash. Assuming a clean RAID5 partition, tri-core processor 2GB of ram, 6GB swap, what could be causing this?

I am thinking of following setup if thats [possible because i have not worked with biger companies , so i want to know how can i do that I am thinking of creating 5 virtual machines VM1 will be database server and will have all databases like MySQL , postgreSQL , sqlite , mongodb and Oracle VM2 will be the web server and will have Apache and Tomcat installed VM3 will be the Filse server where i will have all the web sites file VM4 , i am thinking of as main box where i can install ptyon php java j2ee sites but not sure VM5 will have the server 22008 for c# .net applications my main idea is to be able to host the sites in php, python , java j2ee with spring Is my setup ok or i am missing few things.   I have seen this question asked on here before but was unable to follow the answer which was given. I would like to monitor a processes CPU, Memory, and possibly GPU usage over a given time. The data would be useful if presented in a graph. It would be nice if I could do this using Performance Monitor, but I am open to alternative solutions as well. I have tried using Performance Monitor and my problem is that I'm not sure which performance counters to use since there are so many. I've been looking at a Process, Processor, Memory, etc. but I'm not sure which counters within those categories will be of interest to me. My OS is Windows 7.

• Extensive use of HDD after VmWare Player virtual machine is closed.

  Each time I close virtual machine in VmWare Player I see extensive use of HDD in my system. Basically, whole system becomes unresponsive for about 5-7 minutes. Host system is Windows 7 Utimate x64 SP1 with 6 GB of memory, i3-M350 processor. Virtual machine is Windows XP SP3 x86 (2GB of memory allocated for VM). What can be the cause and what can I do to solve the issue? UPDATE: I am not shutting down the VM, I just close Player window and VM saves it's state. System becomes unresponsive right after VM have saved it state (as indicated by Player) and Player itself have closed.

• Stream computer screen to TV via network instead of a USB wireless link

  I want to stream my computer screen (not just video or a limited amount of content) to my TV via the network. I know there are wireless devices that use USB to tranfer the screen to the TV. However, these are limited to a short distance. What I want to do is stream the data via the network so I can be anywhere within the network and have the data shown on the tv. I am looking for video and sound to transfer. I want the entire computer screen to transfer just like when you connect the computer to the tv via VGA or HDMI and the sound out using the 3.5mm plug. I have been unable to find a unit that allows for the entire computer screen to transfer via the network. I just find the ability to stream video. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with a quad processor and 16 GB of memory so I have the power to handle the transfer. My tv is hdtv.

• Asus Z8NA-D6, not powering up/no signal for monitor

  I have a Asus Z8NA-D6 motherboard. Been running fine so far with one E5504 Xeon processor. I have added another Xeon E5504 CPU to the second slot and it will not power up (or there is no signal to the monitor). The status lights turn on as normal. no error led. Nothing happens other then the leds start and both cpus/fans power up. HDD power up. I tried clearing CMOS.   I have a really specific machine configuration in the works that would really be helped out if there were any way to do this...basically what I'm looking for is the opposite of setting CPU Affinity for a process. I want to be able to tell Windows "No applications except [x] are allowed on [these cores]." Is there any mechanism whatsoever for doing this? (Yes, I am aware of some of the potential issues this could cause and I normally would never fool with processor affinities, since the OS usually does a damned good job itself, but this is a pretty odd situation involving some software that is very CPU-bound constantly having to wait on interrupts and DPCs and things from other threads.)

  I have a laptop with the following specs: 2.2gHz dual-core processor. 4gb of DDR2 Ram. 180gb HDD space. I have tried everything. I have reinstalled the OS. Installed Ubuntu with Lubuntu, LXDE, Gnome Classic, Unity 2D desktop. I have even tried downgrading to XP with all non-critical processes and services turned off. Even with the most stripped down version of Ubuntu it heats up and the fan starts churning. I'm out of ideas. I have tried everything. If you have any tips, please help. :'(

• After installing Windows 8, boot hangs before BIOS setup

  I have an Alienware M15x, 940MX processor, 16 GB RAM, 512GB M4 SSD, and I was running Win7 64bit. I backed up the disk and ran Win 8 setup. Setup appeared to go well through multiple reboots. After the last reboot, it simply stopped after POST at "Press F2 for bios setup". I have tried powering off, reducing RAM to one stick, removing MOS battery. Now, it gets to the screen with "Press F2 for setup" and "Press F12 for boot options". If I press F2, I get a single beep only. If I press F12, nothing. I cannot get into the BIOS to change boot options to boot from another disk and restore. I do have the latest BIOS. I am going to try replacing the CMOS battery, but I don't think that is likely to help. The computer has been fast and very reliable until now.

• Can I rent exclusive time on a powerful server running linux? [closed]

  My company is involved in a proposal that requires speed estimates of our software on a server with the latest & greatest processors. This is not the first time we've been in this situation. The servers themselves are too expensive to buy a new one every time, so we end up extrapolating from what we have. There are so many variables: processor generation & speed, memory speed, memory channels, cache configurations; it makes extrapolation difficult and error-prone. Is there a business that rents time on the newest servers? At least part of the time we'd need exclusive access to an otherwise quiescent system either via ssh shell access or unattended batch jobs. I am not looking for general cloud computing services. I don't need much time on the server, but it needs to be exclusive. And the server needs to be pretty cutting edge for a solid basis of estimate.

• My CPU hits 100°C... Help me!

  The safe limit for processors is typically 50°C or so, but I have found that my CPU likes to do up to 100°C. I have got these readings from SpeedFan 4.42. I have a Intel Quad Core unclocked. I am using the standard intel fan with heatsink that came with the prossesor My case is a Cooler Master and I have two fans installed on the case. I took the side off to see if that helped. It lowered the temp be 3C. I don't really want to blow the processor and I don't know how to cool it down.

(4 physical cores and 8 Threads with HT Technology) RAM 8 GB. HD 500 GB. I have created 4 windows xp guests with 512MB RAM and 1VCPU. On each windows guest i have installed visual studio 2008 only. In nova.conf CPU Over-Commit ratio is 2 for better performance (as mentioned in openstack operation guide). Using KVM as hyerpvisor. I have observed poor performance when simultaneously using visual studio in four windows instances. How i can improve performance ? Should i use KVM or Hyper-V ? or any other suggestion ?

• How many xml http requests is too much for a pc to handle?

  I'm running mediawiki on an apache on a regular pc running vista (don't know the specific specs, but I'm guessing at least duo core 2 2 giga hertz processor, broadband connection (500 kb/s at least, probably 1 mega). I want to use the MediaWiki api to send a lot of requests to this server. Most of the time the requests will be sent through LAN (but sometimes through the internet). I'm talking thousands of requests every few seconds at worst case. (A lot of these requests may repeat themselves, I guess some sort of cache would help) Will the server handle this, or do I need a stronger/dedicated computer? (I'm not looking for specific yes/no, but just want to get an idea as to what configuration of computer will support how many request per second) Thanks

• Which OS should I boot into for virtualization?

  This might be a silly question. I use windows 7 99% of the time. I run linux 10% of the time and XP 5% of the time. I am thinking about getting a Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Processor which has hardware support for virtualization. I dont think i want more than one partition. May have a swap partition. Which OS should I make my primary (and only) partition? I suspect windows7 if i am always using it as going through a linux layer would slow it down. Does it matter much which OS i use if i have hardware support for virtualization? At the moment I am using VMWare player. I suspect software doesnt effect performance?

I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?
