• Proper use of use of "cor" function in R

  I am interested to know what a proper x (vector matrix or data frame) input looks like. I am currently using the function in two different sorts of matrices. However, I am not sure how R would interpret my data the way I intend. I will explain the types of matrix by example. Type 1 Gene1 Gene2 Gene3 sample1 sample2 Type 2 Sample1 Sample2 Sample3 gene 1 gene 2 gene 3 Are either of these formats valid x parameters? I input both of types of matrices and get some results, but without knowing whether or not this a proper use the function, these are just random numbers. Thank you for your time. • Subquery vs Traditional join with WHERE clause?

  When joining to a subset of a table, any reason to prefer one of these formats over the other? Subquery version: SELECT ... FROM Customers AS c INNER JOIN (SELECT * FROM Classification WHERE CustomerType = 'Standard') AS cf ON c.TypeCode = cf.Code INNER JOIN SalesReps s ON cf.SalesRepID = s.SalesRepID vs the WHERE clause at the end: SELECT ... FROM Customers AS c INNER JOIN Classification AS cf ON c.TypeCode = cf.Code INNER JOIN SalesReps AS s ON cf.SalesRepID = s.SalesRepID WHERE cf.CustomerType = 'Standard' The WHERE clause at the end feels more "traditional", but the first is arguably more clear, especially as the joins get increasingly complex. Only other reason I can think of to prefer the second is that the "SELECT *" on the first might be returning columns that aren't used later (In this case, I'd probably only need to return cf.Code and Cf.SalesRepID)

  I know that this question is going to be painfully vague, but here it is any way. I have made an small console application designed to be run on Windows XP Pro computers. It will be run at log in and log out. The command to run this program will be set via GPO and will include command line operators to control what data the program sends. I have used a few built in C# classes to find out information about the computer, which is then sent of to a server as a web request. I need to know which of the following will have issues on a restricted user account on a domain. • Get location from where the Java code is executed

  I have a swing Java application that preserves a lot of data (you can think of a game and its saves for example). Those data are stored in files rather then in database. I would like to keep this files near installation files(.jar file) of my application.Some users(like me) are used to delete default application folder of OS when it comes to large and I don't want them to loose their data this way. Any ideas how to do this easily ? How do I get the folder of the .jar file from program that is executing form that .jar file? Or how do I output files directly into some package? How do I create packages(folders inside jar) dynamically ? Or is there a simple way to distribute Java application in other formats then .jar and then store generated data in installation (sub)folder ? Thanks for reading

  SSIS ignoramus needing help! the situation: a temp table is populated from an excel file, which has been known to change formats at random times, that is owned by a different group. a lookup need to be performed on the temp table, tableA, to populate tableB with valid data. if the lookup results in 0 rows being returned, an email should be sent and the existing data in tableB should remain untouched. If the lookup results in a number of valid rows 0, tableB should have all rows deleted and the new records from the lookup on tableA inserted. question: what would be the best way to check if there are any valid rows and perform the appropriate action(s), depending on my results? • XML to XHTML - Best Method?

  Not wishing to be subjective but I have a need to get data from an XML source and convert it to (X)HTML. From my understanding I can do this with PHP (or other server-side scripts), Javascript, or XSLT. My feeling is that it would be more appropriate to use XSLT as it is dealing with an XML source and this is the purpose for which XSLT exists. I also see it having the advantage that it will still work if the user doesn't have Javascript enabled and wont be restricted to a server which runs PHP (or other server-side script). Am I right in my assumptions? Also could the same be same for an RSS feed? Thanks

• Using the "IN" clause with a comma delimited string from the output of a replace() function in Oracle SQL

  Hi All, I have an comma delimited string which I want to use in an "IN" clause of the statement. eg: 100,101,102 Since In and "IN" clause I have to quote the individial strings, I use a replace function: eg: select ''''||replace('100,101,102',',',''', ''')||'''' from dual; The above query works, however, when I try to use the output of the above as an input to the "IN" clause, it returns no data. I am restricted by only SQL statements, so I cannot use PL/SQL code. Kindly help. eg: select * from employee where employee_number in ( select ''''||replace('100,101,102',',',''', ''')||'''' from dual); The above does not work. Please let me know what I am missing.

• Best way to support large dropdowns

  Say I have a report that can be restricted by specifying some value in a dropdown. This dropdown list references a table with 30,000 records. I don't think this would be feasible to populate a dropdown with! So, what is the best way to provide the user the ability to select a value given this situation? These values do not really have categories and even if I subdivided (by having some nesting dropdown situation) by the first letter of the value, that may still leave a few thousand entries. What's the best way to deal with this?

  Hi, i have a web user control containing a repeater. The repeater contains three buttons. On button click it gives the following error : Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" % in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation. Since user control does not have page directive, so i changed the enableEventValidation to false, but it restricted the itemcommand event of the repeater. Can someone guide me, how to solve this problem?

• How to identify/handle text file newlines in Java?

  Hi Everyone! I get files in different formats coming from different systems that I need to import into our database. Part of the import process it to check the line length to make sure the format is correct. We seem to be having issues with files coming from UNIX systems where one character is added. I suspect this is due to the return carriage being encoded differently on UNIX and windows platform. Is there a way to detect on which file system a file was created, other than checking the last character on the line? Or maybe a way of reading the files as text and not binary which I suspect is the issue? Thanks Guys !

  I've run into a spot of bother with date formats in our Rails application. I have a date field in our view which I want to be formatted as dd/mm/yy. This is how the user will expect to enter their dates, and the datepicker control uses this format. However, Active Record seems to be expecting mm/dd/yy. If I enter 01/03/2010, this gets put in as 03 January 2010. If I enter 25/03/2010, this gets put in a null. How do I get ActiveRecord to expect Her Majesties date format?

• Export SQL Binary/BLOB Data?

  Recently a software application we utilize upgraded from ASP to ASP.NET. In the process they abandoned the old web-based product and rewrote the entire UI, using new DB tables. The old DB tables still exist in the database and contain legacy files in binary or blob formats. I'm wondering if there is an easy way to export all these legacy files from the database to the filesystem (NTFS)? Then we could delete these old unused tables and save a few GB of space in the DB backups, etc.

  I often find myself storing data in a mysql database, and then wanting to display all sorts of stats about my data, specifically stuff like 'how many rows do I have for this date, or that date'. Does anyone know of (or could write) a good tutorial on this subject? Ideally a good tutorial would overview: Best practices when storing the data (i.e. what formats to use, how to use them servertime vs. generated time, etc.) Best practices when selecting data from the database with php (i.e. how to sort rows by date, how to retrieve only rows from a certain date, or a certain hour, etc)..   Given a list of (say) songs, what's the best way to determine their relative "popularity"? My first thought is to use Google Trends. This list of songs: Subterranean Homesick Blues Empire State of Mind California Gurls produces the following Google Trends report: (to find out what's popular now, I restricted the report to the last 30 days) Empire State of Mind is marginally more popular than California Gurls, and Subterranean Homesick Blues is far less popular than either. So this works pretty well, but what happens when your list is 100 or 1000 songs long? Google Trends only allows you to compare 5 terms at once, so absent a huge round-robin, what's the right approach? Another option is to just do a Google Search for each song and see which has the most results, but this doesn't really measure the same thing

  Hello, I have a form which asks the user his or her date of birth. Its a drop down box since I use the select input type. The first drop down has Months, second has Days, the third has the Years. So the format should be Month(October), Day(25), Year(1990). In other words the months spell out the actual month and not simply the number representation of the month. However, I would like to save the Day and Year in their respective formats. How can I do this in phpMyAdmin? Should I use the DATE type? what should the value be? I just need to know how to correlate all of this in phpmyadmin, so I can save it properly. Thank you.

  Let's pretend my program contains a specific construct the C++ Standard states to be unspecified behavior. This basically means the implementation has to do something reasonable but is allowed not to document it. But is the implementation required to produce the same behavior every time it compiles a specific construct with unspecified behavior or is it allowed to produce different behavior in different compiles? What about undefined behavior? Let's pretend my program contains a construct that is UB according to the Standard. The implementation is allowed to exhibit any behavior. But can this behavior differ between compiles of the same program on the same compiler with same settings in the same environment? In other words, if I dereference a null pointer on line 78 in file X.cpp and the implementation formats the drive in such case does it mean that it will do the same after the program is recompiled?

  Is there a easy good way to sum up various excel files in matlab? what i really want is similar to dos command type file*.xls sumfile.xls I have from 10-100 excel files with similar file name formats excet the date XXXXX_2010_03_03.xls, XXXXX_2010_03_03.xls and so on..... Is there a command to copy the files one after other. All files are of diff length so i cannot know the position of the rows after each file. I would like to have them copied in same sheet of excel. • Why is [date] + [time] non-deterministic in SQL Server 2008?

  I'm trying to do the following for my IIS logs table: ALTER TABLE [W3CLog] ADD [LogTime] AS [date] + ([time] - '1900-01-01') PERSISTED However, SQL Server 2008 tells me: Computed column 'LogTime' in table 'W3CLog' cannot be persisted because the column is non-deterministic. The table has this definition: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[W3CLog]( [Id] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, ... [date] [datetime] NULL, [time] [datetime] NULL, ... ) Why is that non-deterministic? I really need to index that field. The table currently has 1598170 rows, and it is a pain to query if we can't do an index seek on the full time. Since this is being UNION'd with some other log formats, we can't very easily just use the two columns separately.

• Program Terminates On File Move

  I have a .Net program that, as one of its functions, takes a file from a user-specified directory and puts it in another, special, directory, specified via UNC (which may or may not be local). I don't open any of these files in this part of the code. There's this bizarre bug I'm having where, on a Windows Server 2003 SP2 VM, this program randomly does a hard abort while doing the move to a local folder. It just terminates. No exception, no logging, and it doesn't appear to happen at any particular moment. I can't reproduce this problem on my development machine, and it only appears to happen during the copy of a particular kind of file that's about a megabyte or so. There are other formats copied to different directories using very similar code, all smaller, and they work fine. Why would a Windows .Net program do a hard abort like this? What can I do to fix it?

• Ruby does not run code correctly

  I run this basic code in Ruby (on Windows): def hello () puts 'test' end hello and the Interpreter throws me this error: app.ru:1: syntax error, unexpected tIDENTIFIER, expecting $end hello puts 'test' It seems like Ruby is skipping lines? I've tried various encoding formats, other code and it still gives me an error similar to this. Why is it happening? EDIT The suggestions were to either use different editors or semi-colons to see if the lines were an issue. The version is also new - 1.9.3p327, so that shouldn't have been a problem. Parentheses aren't a problem either.

• CakePHP ACL use case(s)

  I have got a simple web app in development, i want to establish a couple of user groups; Admin, Doctors & Patients. Each group would have their access restricted to particular controller actions rather than individual content. So for example, Doctors can view patient records (index & view actions), but cannot delete them. Usually i would create a groups model, and assign the various users to a group. And filter in the beforeFilter() method to determine if the user has access. But if ACL can do the job, why right the code, right? Thanks

• SQL Server Editions and Integration Services

  The SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 product family has quite a few editions now, so what does this mean for SQL Server Integration Services? Starting from the bottom we have the free edition known as Express, and the entry level Workgroup edition, as well as the new Web edition. None of these three include the full SSIS product, but they do all include the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard, with access to basic data sources but nothing more, so for simple loading and extraction of data this should suffice. You will not be able to build packages though, this is just a one shot deal aimed at using the wizard on an ad-hoc basis. To get the full power of Integration Services you need to start with Standard edition. This includes the BI Development Studio, for building your own packages, and fully functional IDE integrated into Visual Studio. (You get the full VS 2005/2008 IDE with the product). All core functions will be available but with a restricted set of transformations and tasks. The SQL Server 2005 Features Comparison or Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2008 describes standard edition as having basic transforms, compared to Enterprise which includes the advanced transforms. I think basic is a little harsh considering the power you get with Standard, but the advanced covers the truly ground-breaking capabilities of data mining, text mining and cleansing or fuzzy transforms. The power of performing these operations within your ETL pipeline should not be underestimated, but not all processes will require these capabilities, so it seems like a reasonable delineation. Thankfully there are no feature limitations or artificial governors within Standard compared to Enterprise. The same control flow and data flow engines underpin both editions, with the same configuration and deployment options allowing you to work seamlessly between environments and editions if using the common components. In fact there are no govenors at all in SSIS, so whilst the SQL Database engine is limited to 4 CPUs in Standard edition, SSIS is only limited by the base operating system. The advanced transforms only available with Enterprise edition: Data Mining Training Destination Data Mining Query Component Fuzzy Grouping Fuzzy Lookup Term Extraction Term Lookup Dimension Processing Destination Partition Processing Destination The advanced tasks only available with Enterprise edition: Data Mining Query Task So in summary, if you want SQL Server Integration Services, you need SQL Server Standard edition, and for the more advanced tasks and transforms you need SQL Server Enterprise edition. To recap, the answer to the often asked question is no, SQL Server Integration Services is not available in SQL Server Express or Workgroup editions.
