• Silverlight Pixel Shader resource "not found"; what should the URI be?

  So I've written and compiled an HLSL pixel shader with Shazzam, placed the resulting .ps file in my project, and am trying to instantiate it. No matter what URI I put, Blend tells me that the resource can't be found whenever I try to view any xaml designer, and Visual Studio just shows me a blank page, both in design view and if I try to run the application. This is a Silverlight 4 SketchFlow project, in Blend 4 RC and Visual Studio 2010. I've tried both Resource and EmbeddedResource as the Build Action for the .ps file, neither make any difference (I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be set to Resource). I've tried the following URI formats: "ShaderFileName.ps" "/ShaderFileName.ps" "AssemblyName;component/ShaderFileName.ps" "/AssemblyName;component/ShaderFileName.ps" I also tried moving the shader file from the Screens assembly to the root assembly (that's how SketchFlow projects are created) and that didn't help either. Anyone have any thoughts?

• Catching Oracle Errors in Django

  My Django app runs on an Oracle database. A few times a year, the database is unavailable because of a scheduled process or unplanned downtime. However, I can't see how to catch the error a give a useful message back to the requester. Instead, a 500 error is triggered, and I get an email (or hundreds) showing the exception. One example is: File "/opt/UDO/env/events/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/backends/oracle/base.py", line 447, in _cursor self.connection = Database.connect(conn_string, **conn_params) DatabaseError: ORA-01035: ORACLE only available to users with RESTRICTED SESSION privilege I see a similar error with a different ORA number when the DB is down. Because the exception is thrown deep within the Django libraries, and can be triggered by any of my views or the built in admin views, I don't know where any exception trapping code would go. Any suggestions?

• How can I detect whether an image is a PNG or APNG format?

  APNG is backwards compatible with PNG. I opened up an apng and png file in a hex editor and the first few bytes look identical. So if a user uploads either of these formats, how do I detect what the format really is? I've seen this done on some sites that block apng. I'm guessing the ImageMagick library makes this easy, but what if I were to do the detect without the use of an image processing library (for learning purposes)? Can I look for specific bytes that tell me if the file is apng? Solutions in any language is welcome.

• How to override ggplot2's axis formatting?

  When you choose a log scale, ggplot2 formats the breaks like 10^x. I'd like it to not do that. For example, the code below should display a graph with ticks at 1, 2, 5 etc, not 10^0, 10^0.3, 10^0.69 etc. library(ggplot2) dfr <- data.frame(x = 1:100, y = rlnorm(100)) breaks <- as.vector(c(1, 2, 5) %o% 10^(-1:1)) p1 <- ggplot(dfr, aes(x, y)) + geom_point() + scale_y_log10(breaks = breaks) print(p1) I guess that adding a formatter argument to scale_y_log10 would do the trick, but I'm not sure what to put in the argument, or where the options might be documented.

• Filtering and copying with PowerShell

  In my quest to improve my PowerShell skills, here's an example of an ugly solution to a simple problem. Any suggestions how to improve the oneliner are welcome. Mission: trim a huge icon library down to something a bit more manageable. The original directory structure looks like this: /Apps and Utilities /Compile /32 Bit Alpha png /Compile 16 n p.png /+ 10 or more files /+ 5 more formats with 10 or more files each /+ 20 or so icon names /+ 22 more categories I want to copy the 32 Bit Alpha pngs and flatten the directory structure a bit. Here's my quick and very dirty solution: $dest = mkdir c:\icons; gci -r | ? { $_.Name -eq '32 Bit Alph a png' } | % { mkdir ("$dest\" + $_.Parent.Parent.Name + "\" + $_.Parent.Name); $_ } | gci | % { cp $_. • DocuSign Connect xsd [on hold]

  I'm trying to parse xml inbound to our system from the DocuSign Connect service (which publishes status updates to a given web service). I typiclly use jaxb to process xml but as far as I know I need xsd's in order to generate the jaxb. I don't have (or can't find) xsd's from DocuSign in order to do this. I could use other java classes/libraries to parse the xml but without xsd's I'd have to guess at types, restrictions and formats. Is there a way to generate jaxb without having xsd's?

• Javascript does not work on IIS

  I have a .NET library executing as part of our website that renders HTML to image formats. It uses the IE rendering engine, and will happily run any javascript if present to do the rendering. The problem is we just moved the code to a new server, and javascript seems to be disabled. I tried changing (briefly the Application Pools Process Model Identity from NetworkService to LocalSystem, and that worked fine. Hence it must be a permissions problem. So my questions are this: 1) What is the specific permission I need to set to allow the IE rendering engine to execute javascript, inside the IIS application pool? 2) What is the best way to enable that in my application pool? Do I just somehow set it in NetworkService, or create a new identify (how is that done?) Thanks!

• What is the best PHP framework for building a website around a heavily relational PostgreSQL databas

  First of all, the framework of choice needs to have excellent support for PostgreSQL. I don't care about MySQL because it doesn't have half of the features the application I will be porting requires. (And when I say excellent support, I mean that their approach to database drivers has not been solely trained in MySQL). The ideal framework: Should take full advantage of PHP 5.3 and PostgreSQL 8.4 features Should support new technologies such as OpenID and social networking Should support complex relationships between database relations Should have an intelligent validation system Should have a basic library of helpful views (such as pagination, navigation, etc) Should probably be MVC based Should have excellent documentation and an active development community Should namespace classes intelligently What I'm looking for might be more of a library of utilities, as I really don't want to be restricted by the framework in what I can and can not do. I have my own small library of core classes that take care of business logic, and I will most likely want to integrate those with the new framework as well. Thanks!

There are two problems here a) the file is somehow corrupt ( it was a document imported into drive, so that failed, but that isn't something I care about for the purposes of this question ) b) The file shows up as existing in some API calls, but calls to read comments with the Drive SDK comments API fail.   I am Netbeans user for PHP. I have installed Netbeans IDE 6.8. Everything is working well. There is an option in SOURCE -- FORMAT. This action formats the code properly. It is quite handy. Unfortunately, this functionality is not working for me. Whenever some php code comes in between, it additionally adding some empty rows in between and making it more untidy. Can you please help to set up the same functionality. Restore the settings to default.

  In a Silverlight application, instead of consuming and writing (wcf) wrappers around messages that finally get sent to the bus, I want to send use my message bus as directly as possible. My idea was to expose the service bus directly as a wcf service, or, in other terms, I want to bidirectionally pub/sub over the wire. Has this been done already? Is bi-directionality doable at all? After all, we are (are we restricted to that?) in the http domain? Lots of questions. Some head start would be greatly appreciated! I am in .NET land, with using Rhino Service Bus, but the pattern should apply to different platforms.

I'm trying to get some information from video files and it works pretty fine with file formats like .avi, .mpg or .flv but when I try to use .3gp or .mp4 in: $movie = new ffmpeg_movie('path/to/file/test.3gp'); I get error like this : ffmpeg_movie::__construct() []: ISO: File Type Major Brand: 3gp5 or ffmpeg_movie::__construct() []: ISO: File Type Major Brand: mp42 I installed ffmpeg-php on WAMP using instructions found here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1172916/how-to-install-ffmpeg-in-wampserver-2-0-windows-xp I need those information to send them to ffmpeg using exec().   I have a program that currently outputs Excel via SpreadsheetML files. I build these using streams. This is very space inefficient for Excel; the files can be 5 to 6 times as large as other Excel binary formats. I would like to output a binary excel format such as .xls or .xlsx, but I don't want to have the installation of the program depend on Office. Some users might have it installed, some might not. How can I handle this gracefully? Is it possible to not have an assembly as a dependency but based on the user enabling binary output still use the assembly?

  Hi, i will be sending a POST request to login.php on my server from an iphone app over HTTPS. The POST is created using NSMutableURLRequest. Is there an example of a PHP script to process this POST on my server. The POST isn't sent as a form as such , anyway not that i think it is. Not sure how NSMutableURLRequest formats this. I just need to know how to access the POST data on the server with the php script. All the examples ive seen regarding php scripts processing POSTS seem to be do with forms. So how do i process this?   Hi, I'm writing a little program as a self-learning project in Python 3.x. my idea is for the program to allow two fields of text entry to the user, and then plug the user's input into the value of two specific registry keys. What I was wondering, and something my books don't seem to cover, is if there is a simple way to make it check if the current user can access the registry. I'd rather it cleanly tell the user that he needs admin privileges than for the program to go nuts and crash because it's trying to access a restricted area. I'd like it to make this check as soon as the program launches, before the user is given any input options. What code is needed for this? thanks for the help

• PHP: best practice. Do i save html tags in DB or store the html entity value?

  Hi Guys, I was wondering about which way i should do the following. I am using the tiny MCE wysiwyg editor which formats the users data with the right html tags. Now, i need to save this data entered into the editor into a database table. Should i encode the html tags to their corresponding entities when inserting into the DB, then when i get the data back from the table, not have the encode it for XSS purposes but i'd still have to use eval for the html tags to format the text. OR Do i save the html tags into the database, then when i get the data back from the database encode the html tags to their entities, but then as the tags will appear to the user, i'd have to use the eval function to actually format the data as it was entered. My thoughts are with the first option, i just wondered on what you guys thought. Thanks M

• Referencing Excel Sheets with JET Driver Sheets Are Duplicated with Underscores

  I'm referencing an excel document with the JET database driver, which was working just fine until one day the application failed. Upon further investigation I noticed that the tabs were duplicated in some instances (all tabs actually) - i.e. Tab1$ and Tab1$_. I've researched this issue and found that it is caused by the user applying a filter. Now the filters have been removed, no special formatting, frozen panes, or print formats, but still I have these tabs duplicated. Normally I'd code around this, but since we're in a code freeze I need to come up with an Excel based solution. I want to get rid of those crazy underscored tab names / reverences. I could probably run a program to clean up the file if necessary, to send it back to the users, but I want to explore Excel options first. Thoughts? I have Excel 2010, and access to any other version as well.

• Images saved with D3DXSaveSurfaceToFile will open in Paint, not Photoshop

  I'm using D3DXSaveSurfaceToFile to save windowed Direct3D 9 surfaces to PNG, BMP and JPG files. There are no errors returned from the D3DXSaveSurfaceToFile call and all files open fine in Windows Photo Viewer and Paint. But they will not open in a higher end image editing program such as Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. The error messages from these programs basically say that the file is corrupted. If I open the files in Paint and then save them in the same file format with a different file name, then they'll open fine in the other programs. This leads me to believe that D3DXSaveSurfaceToFile is writing out non-standard versions of these file formats. Is there some way I can get this function to write out files that can be opened in programs like Photoshop without the intermediate step of resaving the files in Paint? Or is there another function I should be using that does a better job of saving a Direct3D surfaces to an image?

  I want to convert folders with video-frames in bitmaps into avi or mpeg files. I already have a VBScript which does a lot of stuff on those files, so it would be neat to integrate a functionallity to convert those folders automatically from my script. I can only find solutions that seem pretty low level and unfortunatley I don't know a whole lot about video file formats. What is the easiest approach to achieve that without reinventing the wheel? My problem is that there is seem to be so much information that I am not sure where to start.

• Should my internal API classes be all in one package?

  I'm hard at work packaging up an API for public consumption. As such I'm trying to limit the methods that are exposed to only those that I wish to be public and supportable. Underneath this of course there are a multitude of limited access methods. The trouble is that I have a lot of internal code that needs to access these restricted methods without making those methods public. This creates two issues: I can't create interfaces to communicate between classes as this would make these my internal methods public. I can't access protected or default methods unless I put the majority of my internal classes in the same package. So, I have around 70 or 80 internal classes in cleanly segregated packages BUT with overly permissive access modifiers. Would you say that a single package is the lesser of two evils or is there a better way to be able to mask my internal methods whilst keeping more granular packages? I'd be interested to find out the best practice here. I'm already aware of This

• MS-Access 2007 Runtime SendObject Crash

  I have programmed an Access Database program using Access 2007. I have a button that points to the event: DoCmd.SendObject acSendReport to have it email a PDF report (acFormatPDF). Everything works fine in the normal Access 2007 program, but when a user opens the program with Access 2007 Runtime, when clicking on this button it goes through the normal steps (notifying Outlook, waiting for Allow/Deny clearance), and then after you click Allow, the program crashes with a Runtime Error. Does anybody know what is going on here? Is this a normal error with Access Runtime? I have tried other file formats (RTF and XLS) instead of PDF, but it seems to be the SendObject command that is crashing the Runtime Environment? Clarification: Access Runtime does not output an error code upon this crash. Just a window stating a "runtime error has occurred".
