• How to keep group-writeable shares on Samba with OSX clients?

  I have a FreeNAS server on a network with OSX and Windows clients. When the OSX clients interact with SMB/CIFS shares on the server, they are causing permission problems for all other clients. Update: I can no longer verify any answers because we abandoned the project, but feel free to post any help for future visitors. The details of this behavior seem to also be dependent on the version of OSX the client is running. For this question, let's assume a client running 10.8.2. When I mount the CIFS share on an OSX client and create a new directory on it, the directory will be created with drwxr-x-rx permissions. This is undesirable because it will not allow anyone but me to write to the directory. There are other users in my group which should have write permissions as well. This behavior happens even though the following settings are present in smb.conf on the server: [global] create mask= 0666 directory mask= 0777 [share] force directory mode= 0775 force create mode= 0660 I was under the impression that these settings should make sure that directories are at least created with rwxrwxr-x permissions. But, I guess, that doesn't stop the client from changing the permissions after creating the directory. When I create a folder on the same share from a Windows client, the new folder will have the desired access permissions (rwxrwxrwx), so I'm currently assuming that the problem lies with the OSX client. I guess this wouldn't be such an issue if you could easily change the permissions of the directories you've created, but you can't. When opening the directory info in Finder, I get the old "You have custom access" notice with no ability to make any changes. I'm assuming that this is caused because we're using Windows ACLs on the share, but that's just a wild guess. Changing the write permissions for the group through the terminal works fine, but this is unpractical for the deployment and unreasonable to expect from anyone to do. • How to open Firefox's "organize bookmarks" from Vimperator?

  Before using Vimperator, I used Xmarks for organizing and synchronizing bookmarks between computers. Now I installed Vimperator and I can only bookmark a page from command mode with :bmark. How can I open Organize Bookmarks with Vimperator? Besides disabling Vimperator and choosing it from the menu what else can I do? Before, I had CTRL + SHIFT + b to open the organizer. Now, in Vimperator, this shortcut doesn't work anymore, even after temporarily disabling Vimperator with CTRL + z. EDIT After setting the main menu visible (with :set go+=m thanks to Hamish Downer), I saw the shortcut for opening the organize bookmarks dialog (CTRL + SHIFT + o). I recently switched to Ubuntu Linux and in this version of Firefox some keyboard shortcuts are different then in Windows (including the shortcut for opening organize bookmarks). Sorry for my ignorance.

  Please help!, Here is my situation: I've been doing business using my current gmail address ([email protected]) and really wanted my mail address to read [email protected], so i looked into google apps. It says you can set up custom emails with your domain name, achieving the above goal, but how do i configure these addresses to run through my CURRENT gmail account? • Re-downloading accidentally deleted podcasts in iTunes

  I deleted some previously deleted podcast episodes in iTunes 9 and I'd like to re-download them. (I don't want to manually re-download them because then they won't show up in the podcast's list in the iTunes Podcast section.) I've read http://blog.krisgielen.be/archives/54 as well as Way to get old podcasts in iTunes where the suggestion is to delete the iTunes entries for the podcasts I'd like to recover, then hold shift while re-opening that podcast's little triangle icon. Here's the problem though: holding shift and re-opening the triangle tells iTunes to refresh the RSS feed, and it's possible that the RSS feed no longer contains the item you want. What I'm really looking for is a means of getting the "Get" button (that normally appears on un-downloaded podcasts) to reappear on the episodes I've previously downloaded but deleted.

• Gnome Terminal intercepts ctrl-F1

  Gnome Terminal does not pass on to applications the keypress ctrl-F1. It's an official bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/932940 The bug is marked Feb. 2012 but lives on in serendipity since 2009. The bug report is not even complete since shift-ctrl-F1 is also affected. However, I noticed that those two keys are the default keys for switch-to-workspace-1 and move-to-workspace-1. So I disabled them. Zero, zippo, zilch: Gnome Terminal would still swallow the keys. Next, I assigned to those two workspace functions totally different keys. The new keybindings did work, Gnome Terminal would still swallow ctrl-F1 and shift-ctrl-F1. Where are the default workspace keybindings stored? [Not in a xml-file.]

• International Dvorak keyboard doesn't trigger hot-keys

  I'm using the Engilsh-Dvorak keyboard-layout; My second keyboard language is Hebrew, which has nothing to do with Dvorak but the hot keys (e.g if I'm writing a document in Hebrew and want to make some bold text using Ctrl+b). The default Hebrew keyboard that comes with Windows (7 and below) has a shift mode which matches each Hebrew character with its matching English QWERTY character ). Obviously I'd want to use the Dvorak corresponding key rather than the QWERTY one, so I created a Hebrew-Dvorak keyboard with a software called Keyboard Layout Manager (KLM) which creates new keyboard layouts DLLs. It works just fine for the shift key, however, Ctrl-key triggered hot-keys (e.g Ctrl+l in FF) are being matched to the corresponding QWERTY key. I've examined the properly working English-Dvorak layout using KLM and in it's "Ctrl+ pressed" view, there isn't any character that's matched to any key but still I tried to encode the Hebrew Ctrl+ pressed keys to work with their matching Dvorak keys, yet it had no effect.

• Subdomains, folders, internationalization, and hosting solutions

  I'm a web developer and I recently landed a gig to develop the US / international version of a site for a company that's big in Europe but hasn't done much expansion into the US yet. They've got an existing site at company.com, which should remain visible to European customers after the new site goes up, and an existing (not great) site at company.us, which I'm going to be redeveloping (the .us site will be taken down when my version goes up--keep reading for details). My solution needs to take into account the fact that there are going to be new, localized versions of the site in the fairly near future, so the framework I'm writing needs to be able to handle localizations fairly easily (dynamically load language packs, etc). The tricky thing is the European branch of the company manages the .com site hosting (IIS-based) and the DNS, while I'll be managing the US hosting (and future localizations), which will likely be apache-based. I've never been a big fan of the ".us" TLD--I think most US users are accustomed to visiting the .com--so the thought is that the European branch will detect the IP of inbound traffic and redirect all US-based addresses to us.example.com (or whatever the appropriate localized subdomain might be), which would point to the IP address of my host. I'd then serve the appropriate locale-specific content by pulling the subdomain from the $_SERVER superglobal (assuming PHP). I couldn't find any examples of international organizations that take a subdomain-based approach for localization, but I'm not sure I have any other options as a result of the unique hosting structure here (in that there's not a unified hosting solution for the European and US sites). In my experience, the US version of an international site would live at domain.com/us, not at us.domain.com, and I'd imagine that this has to do with SEO (subdomains are treated as separate sites, so improved rankings for the US site wouldn't help the Canadian version if subdomains are used to differentiate between them). My question is: is there a better approach to solving this problem than the one I'm taking? Ideally, I'd like to use a folder-based approach (see adidas.com as an example of what I'm talking about), but I'm not sure that's a possibility given that the US site (and other localizations) will not be hosted on the same server as the rest of the .com. Can you, in IIS, map a folder (e.g. domain.com/us) to a different IP address? What would you recommend? Thanks for your consideration.

• Key modifiers affect remote VNC sessions in OS X

  I have two concurrent users of my MacBook: one local (with local peripherals) and one remote (connecting via VNC to a user kept logged in with fast user switching). As described here http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/52547-howto-simultaneous-user-environments-via-vnc.html That's working fine, except that when I hit modifier keys (e.g. shift, option, ...), I also affect the remote user. For example, if I hold down shift, the remote user's key strokes are capitalised, and if I hold down option, they get strange glyphs instead of the normal letters. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or how to fix it?

• How can I delete faster? Word boundary backspace?

  I like to type fast. I'm a chronic delete-keyer. I will type first, re-think the output later and hit delete. It seems I'm addicted to always doing something fast. Anyways, I have to tap the delete button very often. Is there a way to do a backspace to word boundary that's native? In a chat box, I can use alt+shift+left to get a word, cmd shift left to get the whole line, etc. but I can't do that in a python shell for example. Any ideas?

• Any way to get back Chrome's Dialog box for cache clearing instead of the new tab?

  As of today's release of chrome (Tuesday, March 8, 2011) on both Mac & PC the settings are now in a tab (chrome://settings/advanced), needless to say when you're clearing your cache very frequently (cmd-shift-delete on mac, cntl+shift+delete on PC) it's quite tedious going back and forth in tabs. The click & clean chrome extension doesn't have a mac counterpart (plus I like the keyboard much more than the mouse). I've searched and have yet to find a way to get a dialog box instead of the new tab.

• Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

  I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

• Why am I unable to send an attachment with Outlook via SMTP that I am able to send via Gmail / Google Apps?

  I have Google Apps installed and I have tried to set up Outlook 2007 to send messages via SMTP. I followed the guide, selecting what I believe are all the correct settings. Yes, I am using POP for incoming, that is intentional but I don't believe it should affect outgoing messages. When I log into gmail (google apps) for my company, I can send a message that has an 8MB attachment (pdf file, not zipped or anything) and it sends fine. However, when I send the same message in Outlook with that same 8mb attachment it fails. Why am I unable to send an attachment with Outlook via SMTP that I am able to send via Gmail / Google Apps?
