• How to add a second domain to an EC2 instance with Elastic & Route 53

  I've got my domain site.com running on EC2, using Elastic IP and Route 53. I want to park site.net so that it resolves to the same site.. I've looked up Migrating an Existing Domain to Route 53 in the docs, but can't find mention of how to add a second domain! I figured I'd have to create an A record, but when I do so, the record is created site.net.site.com .. not quite what I'm after! I've also done searches for mixes of 'route 53', 'park domain', 'addon domain', 'second domain', but no dice... My prior experience is with cPanel and Plesk, so I'm a bit lost! Any pointers would be appreciated! TIA

  Hello,i want to install windows xp from my flash disk but upon running DISKPART and LIST PART my flash disk is not being listed.I soon find out its not supported on another forum.I tried unet bootin but i dont want to go that route.I have learn't that i can make my flash disk appear a hard drive but i am not sure since i have never done this before. • Snapshotting single disk of running Hyper-V VM

  I'm currently somewhat at a loss of how to create a snapshot of a single virtual hard-disk of a running Hyper-V VM. Generally, creating a differential disk while a server is shut down is no problem (i.e., call the new-vhd cmdlet and pass a ParentPath, then update the VHD-binding of the respective VM-device), but while the host is running, all I can find is checkpointing the VM as a whole (which creates snapshots of all attached disks), and leaves the VM-state in a form which isn't easily processable by external tools (i.e., it requires reading additional meta-data from the VM). Generally, what'd I'd like to happen for a single-disk snapshot (in my understanding) is: Pause the VM Rename current disk to some other name which specifies it as a base-snapshot Create a new VHD which has the renamed VHD as parent path and is marked as "current" Swap the VHD for the VM for the snapshotted hard-disk to the newly created differential VHD Resume the VM Is there any means to do this programatically? Update: I've seen that this is actually possible with SCSI-disks, i.e. pause the VM, remove the SCSI disk, make the snapshot, reattach the SCSI disk at the same position, resume the VM. And, the VM resumes properly. But: is something similar also possible with G1 machines for the boot disk which is always IDE?

• mount samba share on a vmware instance

  I've a windows machine in which a linux server is run by a "VMWare player". From the windows machine, I want some folders to be mounted on the Linux virtual server. All this is done in a maven build (which is quite irrevelant here, in fact). From what I understand, to make these windows folders available as mountable ones, I have to do the following operations Share the folders as Samba ones using net share, this I have done. Access my virtual server and check which folders are already mounted (which seems to be doable using a less /etc/fstab), this I'll do soon Mount my samba shares using smbmount All that seems to my by far too hackish code. Could the same be done using ... say ... JMX/SNMP or any other high-level technology ?

• disk space keeps filling up on EC2 instance with no apperent files/directories

  How come os shows 6.5G used but I see only 3.6G in files/directories? Running as root on an Amazon Linux AMI (seems like Centos), lots of free memory available, no swapping going on, no apparent file descriptors issue. The only thing I can think of is a log file that was deleted while applications append to it. Disk space usage is slowly but continuously rising towards full capacity (~1k/min with very small decreases from time to time) Any explanation?   Is there a way to monitor ec2 instances without using cloudwatch? I ask this since ec2 instances are basically VPS's, and using output from commands like top, vmstat, htop in scripts may not give the clear picture as the CPU cycles are shared between other instances as well. What should one keep in mind while monitoring CPU usage on a VPS?, should one have alerts based on top load or % of CPU used by user processes coupled with other factors like processes waiting on disk io, hardware interrupts?

• Running RAID on an internal storage drive

  I am running Windows 8 on an SSD, and it's all running swimmingly, but I want to put my documents on a "normal" HD running under RAID 1. I have four SATA 3GB/s ports on my motherboard (my Windows 8 SSD drive in on a different 6GB/s controller). All four are used (1 Bluray Optical Drive, 1 Spare HD, and the 2 I wish to turn into a RAID 1 drive. In my BIOS I can only change settings for the entire controller, not just ports. So my question is: If I turn these four ports into a RAID controller, will that negatively affect the non-RAID hardware plugged into it? I.e. Will a HD or Bluray drive be slower/incompatible with being plugged into a non AHCI SATA port? Thanks.

• Hard Disk based storage library

  We have a Tandberg T24 tape device to handle all of our long term backups right now. We decided that we're not backing up nearly everything that we would like to and that we still have a lot of vulnerabilities. To get to where we want to be, we're going to have to back up a lot more servers than we're currently doing. All of our internal servers have some sort of directly attached drive (I.e. LaCie Raid box or a simple portable hard drive) doing backups, but what we want to do is get those backups off-site. The current tape drive is directly attached via SCSI to a Windows Server 2008 File Server. So to back up anything to tape, it has to be funneled through the File Server. With the current increase that we have planned, I don't think that funneling everything through the File Server is the right course of action and I'm thinking that maybe a second backup device would be more appropriate. I would like your input on a couple of ideas. 1) Doing HDD instead of tape. Tape is hard to deal with. We have a regular rotation cycle, so they don't need years and years of shelf life, so I'm wondering if something HDD-based would be better. 2) Something accessible over the network. Instead of having the device directly attached to one specific machine, have it available to all the servers over the network. Our File Server is a 12-disk raid 6 set up.. I was thinking something like that, but with no raid involved, all disks are stand alone so they can be used/installed/removed on an individual basis. Does any such thing exist? Thanks for your ideas. I'm really interested to hear about some of the solutions you guys are using..

My question is if I start dumping data to /opt will that data be mounted in /hdd1 or / My goal is to utilise the new hdd1 instead of old disk(/dev/sda3). How can this be done? • I can't ping to my EC2 instance although icmp has been set

  I wasn't able to ping to my ec2 server although I've done the following command: ec2-authorize default -P icmp -t -1:-1 -s 0.0.0.0/0 when I try this again it gives me: Client.InvalidPermission.Duplicate: The permission '0.0.0.0/0-3--1--1' has already been authorized on the specified group now when I ping from my laptop it gives me: PING 54.251.103.225 (54.251.103.225): 56 data bytes Request timeout for icmp_seq 0 Request timeout for icmp_seq 1 Request timeout for icmp_seq 2 Request timeout for icmp_seq 3 any idea on what to try on next?

• E2K7: Can't add jounaling mailbox to storage group

  We just added a new SG to a standalone E2K7 server but Exchange pops an error when we try to enable journaling on it. The journal recipient mailbox was created a while back and as far as we can tell there are no issues with it. It's viewable in the GAL and accessible through OWA. The error is: Set-Mailboxdatabase Error:Obkect "domain.company.com/Journaling/Journal5" could not be found. Please make sure that it was spelled correctly or specify a different object. This Journal5 account is in a child domain (like all the other journaling mailboxes we have attached to other mailbox server SGs). We also tried attaching one of the working journaling mailboxes to this SG but they also popped back the same error. Event log is now showing any errors at all. We are running SP1 on this server. I've tried dismounting/remounting the store and bouncing the IS and SA services but that didn't help any. Any suggestions?

• Cannot send email from EC2 instance on port 587

  I have written a mail service for our flask application that uses Celery and RabbitMQ to send emails (using gmail). I have got the celery consumer and producer communicating okay but I cannot get to send send emails. I am getting a socket.error: [Errno 101] Network is unreachable. I think this means that AWS is blocking port 587 - even though in my security group I opened both ports 587 and 25 (inbound and outbound). Any reason why this is happening? Any help will be highly appreciated.

  I believe this situation would be similar to many others out there, so maybe some of you can shed some light... Supposedly, when making password changes through MS exchange every 90 days, you cannot use any simple variation of one of your old passwords, up to whatever limit the admin's set for a system. My question: If your previous passwords are only stored as hashes, how can they check for the "just changed one letter" case. Wouldn't they have to have access to the old plain-text passwords in order to make those comparisons? The only other thing I can think of is if upon original creation of a password, they also stored all other one character permutations of it, so that they can be banned later?

• Copy an Amazon EC2 Instance to use locally

  Ok, so we have a spare server I have installed Debian Wheezy on, and setup Xen on for virtual machines. It has better performance than all our ec2 instances combined, and will cost less to run (for a few various reasons) I would like to get the EC2 instances downloaded to my server, and converted to run for Xen, but im having difficulty finding anything specific. I did not setup the EC2 instances myself, and am not very familiar with them. Everything I have found (which isnt much) just says "Do XYZ" and I have no idea how to do those. So being as specific as possible would be helpful. Also, confusingly I see people writing in forums saying you can only export linux images (which mine are, Ubuntu images) but then I see on amazons export tool saying you can only export Windows server? Am I missing something here? Is that not the right place to be looking? Thanks

• Turning a running Linux system into a KVM instance on another machine

  I have two physical machines that I wish to virtualize. I can not (physically) plug the hard drives from either machine into the new machine that will act as their VM host, so I think that copying the entire structure of the system over using dd is out of the question. How can I best go about migrating these machines from their hardware to the KVM environment? I've set up empty, unformatted LVM logical volumes to host their filesystems, with the understanding that giving the VMs a real partition to work with achieves higher performance than sticking an image on the filesystem. Would I be better off creating new OS installs and rsyncing the differences over? FWIW, the two machines to be VM'd are running CentOS 5, and the host machine is running Ubuntu Server 10.04 for no particularly important reason. I doubt this matters too much, as it's still going to be KVM and libvert that matter.

• SSO to multiple websites from Sharepoint website

  We have an intranet based on Sharepoint 2010. In this intranet we have several links to other webservers within the same Active Directory, for example a link to our Outlook Web Access site on our Exchange 2010 environment. We have three different setups which visit this Sharepoint environment and the other webservers: Windows 7 clients that are a member of the Active Directory Home pc's that connect through a SSL VPN appliance Standalone thin clients (Windows 7 embedded) within the corporate network The goal is to let people only sign in once. In the first group this isn't a problem because the AD Integrated Authentication works fine and the Windows logon is passed on to Sharepoint and the other webservers. The second group is also working fine because of the LDAP integration that the SSL VPN appliance uses. The third group is however experiencing issues. They need to enter their credentials everytime they click a link to another webserver. They first need to enter credentials for accessing the Sharepoint environment. When clicking the link for their webmail they have to re-enter their credentials, and so on. Can someone tell me what the best solution would be to also get SSO working fine for the third group? Some extra information: We also have a Forefront TMG server in our environment. I read somewhere that Forefront might be part of a solution for this problem, but not sure how. • Extract X11 configuration information from running instance.

  Since I had a hard disk die on me, I figured I could easily try some other OS (I usually run Ubuntu). Turns out that Ubuntu flawlessly recognizes my video card and monitor (X11 works right out of the box), and none of the other systems I tried gets anything working (I tried CentOS and FreeBSD). In my now working version of Ubuntu I cannot find a configuration file with information I could try to use with one of the other versions, which makes me guess that it just detects the hardware every time. Can I extract its choice for drivers and configuration options somehow (so I can try these same options in the other systems)?

• Hyper-V share a folder between host and instance

  I have a hyper-v server and several VM's (Virtual Machines). All the VM's are connected to an external network. I have tried to share a folder on the host and connect via the VM, I can do this but I'm prompted for a user name and password (as you would expect). I do not want to enable the "Everyone" group permissions as the physical host server is on a network of other servers. I have created a new virtual internal network in Hyper-V and given it's adapter a static ip of 33.0.0.100. I have added the virtual adapter to one of the VM's and set to IP to 33.0.0.2 (as advised here). Again this seems to work but I'm still prompted for a user name and password. Am I on the right lines here? I just want to share a directory from the host to the vm's without exposing the share to other servers on the network.

  Hi, I'm having difficulties handling multiple instances of my root (main) activity for my application. My app in question has an intent filter in place to launch my application when opening an email attatchment from the "Email" app. My problem is if I launch my application first through the the android applications screen and then launch my application via opening the Email attachment it creates two instances of my root activity. steps: Launch root activity A, press home Open email attachment, intent filter triggers launches root activity A Is it possible when opening the Email attachment that when the OS tries to launch my application it detects there is already an instance of it running and use that or remove/clear that instance?

  Curious how one would go about calling a class method from inside an instance method of a module which is included by an active record class.   Is there any way to request an instance from the StructureMap ObjectFactory by the string name of the type? For example, it would be nice to do something like this: var thing = ObjectFactory.GetInstance("Thing"); The use case here is a messaging scenario in which the message is very generic and contains only the name of a task. The handler receives the message, gets the task name from the message and retrieves the Type of task runner from a configuration database. StructureMap scans all the assemblies in a directory and one of them will contain the Type returned from the config database which then needs to be instantiated. The other possibility is to grab a Type instance by doing the following: var type = Type.GetType("Thing"); But the problem there is the assembly may or may/not be loaded in the AppDomain so that reflection call isn't always possible.
