Beginner Design pattern question (Web Services involved)

Hi all ! I am a noob to web services world. I need to develop a login validator module and expose it as a service. I want it to be service independent, i.e I should have the option of exposing it as a SOAP service or REST service in the future. What pattern should I follow ? Sorry if I am unclear in my requirements, I can clarify as per need. Thanks !! Edit : I am using Eclipse as an IDE and Jersey libraries. I am not into any framework, simply using the MVC pattern. I find a lot of difference between SOAP ann REST methods, so I want my methods to be implementation independent - i.e I should be easily able to use my method through a SOAP or REST service call as per need. What should I do for maximum flexibility ?

How often do you look for code examples?

I am a comp sci student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app dev and now I have switched to web dev and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app dev, really) I reference other code wayyyy too much. I constantly google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I was wondering how often you guys reference other code and does it just boil down to a lack of memorization of intricate tasks on my part? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... tl;dr: I google for code examples for basically ALL semi advanced/advanced functionality, how to fix this and do you do as well?

PHP with SQL Injection

For our first assignment in a System Security class, we have to hack into the professors "cheaply organized" sql database. I know the only user is "admin" and the select statement generated in the php is: select user_id from user where user_username = 'admin' AND user_password = md5('noob') I am having a number of problems attempting to bypass the password part of this statement as the professor has some javascript embedded in the page to sanitize the username and password of any non-alphanumeric values. This can be bypassed by turning off javascript :P but any values sent still get cleaned by the operating system (some build of Debian 32-bit). I've seen the code for the login request and it does not escape any characters. How do I bypass the operating systems escape sequences?

Is there supposed to be a Windows Network folder in the file manager?

I pulled my hard drive out of my computer and started with a bootable usb version of Ubuntu, which I am using that at this point. At first boot, I see that there is a Windows folder when browsing network. Since there is no operating system present, besides the usb that I boot from, should there be a Windows network folder? Original question First of all I just want to say, I wish I had tried Ubuntu a couple years ago when I first heard about it, but I was like a lot of the population and went with the "easy way" and stuck with Windows because I didn't want to take the time to learn something new. Well, about 3 months ago I realized someone had hacked into my computer, and then found they had hacked my facebook account so I decided I had better do a complete credit check. I found student loans (totalling about 30,000 so far) had recently showed up on my credit report. I think it's going to be a long, long road to recovery now but I'm hoping Ubuntu will be a start and definitely an eye opener. My relationship with Windows is over. I had 3 antivirus programs running, none were protecting me like I thought they were. Turned out a free program that I downloaded was the only one that could detect and clean the virus, but by then it was too late. stuck in while loop python

I am creating a chat server in python and got quite far as a noob in the language. I am having 1 problem at the moment which I want to solve before I go further, but I cannot seem to find how to get the problem solved. It is about a while loop that continues.. in the below code is where it goes wrong while 1: try: data = self.channel.recv ( 1024 ) print "Message from client: ", data if "exit" in data: self.channel.send("You have closed youre connection.\n") break except KeyboardInterrupt: break except: raise When this piece of code get executed, on my client I need to enter "exit" to quit the connection. This works as a charm, but when I use CTRL+C to exit the connection, my server prints "Message from client: " a couple of thousand times. where am I going wrong?

Automatic switching between monitor configurations

I have a laptop and an external monitor and i was wondering if there was a simple approach to switching between multiple monitor configurations based on the detected available displays. For example: When i am at home and i plug in my external monitor i would like this to automatically become enabled and the laptop screen to become disabled. As soon as i pull out the display cable for the external monitor, i would like the laptop screen to automatically become enabled. I was expecting this to just "work" just like it does in windows - but it seems to be much harder than that. I am aware of the xrandr command to turn displays on and off but i cannot seem to find a way to get this to work the way i describe above. I had also found this post about switching between multiple monitor configurations and the results seem a bit inconclusive. However i was hoping that with xrandr there would be a simpler solution. For me, the fact that when i pull out my external monitor the screen just goes black and i get an error message is a big issue holding me back from making the complete switch to linux as i move around alot as a student. My OS of choice is currently Kubuntu 12.04 but i am willing to change to something else if it provides a better way of setting up the described setup.

iPhone / Android: what protocol stacks do apps use for connecting to centralised services?

Hi All, Aplogies for the ignorant question, I have no experience with app development on any mobile platform. Basically what I want to know is what communication protocols do apps typically use for accessing/querying centralised services? E.g if I port a webapp/service to iPhone/Andriod, typically how would I access/query this web service in my app? E.g is it over HTTP, or are there other protocols? Also, presumably the GUI of an app is constructed with Apple/Andriod GUI libraries (in java? cocoa?). Can an app GUI be defined with HTML/javascript like a webpage? Sorry again for the pure noob questions. Thanks

For anyone with free time: Trying to learn how to replace PHP with Python, failing terribly.

I want give web development using Python a shot, but I'm failing hard. I don't even know if I CAN run Python. The webpage for my web host says it supports all kinds of stuff, including Python. I've never touched anything CGI related and this does not appear to be a noob friendly area. Restoring a saved opengl ES buffer (i.e. writing it back to screen)

I'm writing an iPhone app where I need to save and load the screen contents. I was able to save the screen using glReadPixels(), but since there's no glDrawPixels() in openGL ES, I'm having a lot of trouble restoring that buffer to the screen. I gather that I need to save the screen as a texture: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/708760/what-is-the-equivalent-of-gldrawpixels-in-opengl-es-1-1 But I'm not sure how to implement this. Does anyone have or know of any code samples that do this? I'm an openGL noob, so any help would be greatly appreciated :)

iPhone CoreData Migration and modifying data

I have an app that has both static data and user entered data in the CoreData store. I understand how to do a lightweight migration to a new database version, but how to I add or modify the static data without affecting the users data? If I have 50 static data entries to add and a couple to modify (ie. spelling mistakes) should they be stored in a different sqlite db and copied over? Also, is it possible to look at the version of the data store so that this copy only happens the first time the app is started up after upgrading? Actionscript 2 call function from variable

How can i call a function form a variable. var upfunction = init; //or var upfunction = init(); I have tried the above code and it does not work. I want to be able to call that variable from a keypress and change the variables function. For example. function init(){ //Do whatever } function init2(){ //Do another thing } var upfunction = init(); if (Key.getCode() == Key.UP) { upfunction; } Then later doing upfunction = init2(); That way i could change the function without having much code. Sorry if this is a noob question but all i do is copy and paste code i have found.

Crypto++ AES Decrypt how to?

There are next to no noob guides to crypto++ out there. Or none that I've found anyway. What I want to do is decrypt an array of uchars I generate with another AES encrypter. Where would I start? I have the library built and linking grand. Do I need to set anything up or do I just call a function on my array (and if so what function) ? How do I run multiple objects through an IF statement in rails?

I am creating an application that highlights user messages from a stream based on whether or not the user has been 'vouched'. It works fine if it's setup for a single author. For example controller: @vouch = Vouch.last.vouched_user_nickname view: <% if tweet.from_user == @vouch %> <div class="flit_message_containerh">.... But I'm having trouble doing it for multiple user nicknames. @vouch = Vouch.find(:all, :select => "vouched_user_nickname", :group => 'vouched_user_nickname' ) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Hi, at this page new customer, there is something that it doesn't like, my boss asked me to make a show function that shows the new customer registration when the user clicks on the "ny kunde" button. Here is an example of the code I got working (I'm a jQuery noob). I guess there is some clash between this and the functions already installed on the page, but what? #roundbigboxnykunde is meant to be hidden on the page as on the jsfiddle example, but I have shown it to let you see what else is on the page. Prevent auto scrolling when clicking tab anchor

On my page I have some tabs that I've added some javascript so when they're clicked the page loads the tab's anchor URL instead of simply changing the view with AJAX, but I now want to stop the browser from auto scrolling to the anchor location. Having done some research, I'm pretty sure I just need to add a couple of lines so that when clicked it returns false or prevents default but, being a noob, I've no idea where to put them!?! Right-click on a Listbox in a Silverlight 4 app.

I am trying to implement what I used to take for granted in Winforms applications. I am a Silverlight noob, so hopefully all this is elementary. I have a listbox in a Silverlight 4 app. I'd like to do the following: Right-click on the listbox Have the item under the location where I click highlight itself I'd like a context menu to popup (with my own items in the context menu) From my research so far, it appears that there is no ContextMenu construct in Silverlight, instead we have to build up a Grid/Canvas structure and attach it to a Popup object, which is what is then popped up. My questions are as follows: To accomplish #2, I need some kind of hit test on the listbox. I can't figure out how to do that and my google-fu isn't helping. Once I do identify the index under the mouse, how do I actually select the item? Is there a reusable Context menu component somewhere that I can use? Extra credit if the component allows arbitrary sub-menus.

I would like to know where I need to start in order to learn back-end programming not only for the knowledge, but also for the challenge of it. How would you code this: Grid-breaking shapes

I'm a person that learns best from example. Currently, I'm diving into the field of Web Development after fifteen years of developing desktop apps. I'm still getting used to all the web technologies used for developing modern web sites and everywhere I look, I see cool little UI elements and question how they're implemented. So I thought I'd ask you, the web experts...the wexperts :) What are some straight forward or creative ways you could code this grid-breaking arrow... The basic layout for this page looks like... What would the html/css code look like? Would you split the image into multiple images or could you use a single image? I'm sure this is a really simple concept and it completely boggles me. Deselecting an element in jQuery

I have a collection of span elements. In the code I have a global variable that represents the "selected" object. Using the click event when a span is clicked I reset the object's class, reset the global variable, then set the object to the variable and change its class (to make it "highlighted"). This effectively toggles selection when clicking an object. var currentItem = null; $( ".item" ).click( function() { if( $( this ).hasClass( "selected" ) ) { $( this ).removeClass( "selected" ) currentItem = null; } else { if( $( ".item" ).hasClass( "selected" ) ){ $( ".item" ).removeClass( "selected" ) } $( this ).addClass( "selected" ); currentItem = $( this ); } } ); What I'd like to be able to do is unselect when clicking on an empty area of the page. I tried creating a click event on the body object, but that overrode the span click event so nothing was selected. I'm a complete jQuery noob and not sure where to go with this.

use file or class for documenting classes in doxygen?

Hi all, This surely is a noob question, but I can't find an answer in Doxygen documentation. I'm not sure whether using: @file or @class when documenting my header files. The reason is that if I put file, then all the comments appear in the Files tab only, but not in the Classes tab (per each). For cpp it's ok, I just use file and it's good, but if I use both file and class in the header (file at the beginning and class right before the start of the class declaration) then I get duplicated entries for the class in the generated documentation... What I'm doing wrong? Any suggestions? Ideas? Regards, Alex
