• Unable to force Debian to do unattended install... libc6 wants interactive confirm

  I'm trying to create a script that forces a Debian Lenny install to install the latest version of CRAN R. During the install it appears libc6 is upgraded and the install wants interactive confirm that it's OK to restart three services (mysql, exim4, cron). This process HAS to be unattended as it runs on Amazon's Elastic Map Reduce (EMR) machines. But I'm running out of options. Here's a few things I've tried: This previous question appears to be exactly what I'm looking for. So is there a way to make libc6 just restart these services with no user input? Or is there a way to stop cron so it does not cause an interactive prompt? Maybe a creative option I've never thought of? Keep in mind that this system is brought up, some Hadoop code is run, and then it's torn down. So I can put up with side effects and bad behavior that we might not want in a production desktop machine or web server.

• erlyvideo server doesn't start automatically after reboot

  I have installed erlyvideo server on ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala. Everything works fine, but after server reboot I have to start erlyvideo server manually with /etc/init.d/erlyvideo start. I try allready update-rc.d and I think erlyvideo by default should start automaticaly. Any help will be appreciated. • Enter network credentials as part of batch script

  WinXP: I have several system services that are needed to run some machinery in my lab. The machine these services are running uses a lab login that has administrator rights. Our IS department, unfortunately, has it set up where at some point during the night the login "loses" the privilege level to start/stop these services. The account stays logged in, but the software controlling my hardware becomes unresponsive. In order to get things back up and running, I have to stop the system services and restart them. Because of the security settings, however, I have to re-enter the user password to start the service (even though the user was never logged out). That, I get the "This service cannot be started due to a logon failure" and I have to enter the password. What would be ideal is to have a batch script run before anyone gets into work that stops all of the necessary services, enters the user credentials when prompted, and then restarts them so that everything is ready for first shift to run. I assumed that using the Task Scheduler in Windows would work as it allows you to run batch files with a user's name and password, but this didn't seem to do the trick. With this setup I would arrive to find that all the services are stopped but not started again. (Presumably because the authentication failed.) The batch file is about as simple as it gets, all I have is: net stop "Service1" net stop "Serivce2" etc., then restart in reverse order based on dependency: net start "Service2" net start "Serivce1" What would it take to accomplish what I'm trying to do and restart the services?

• Sudo won't execute command as another user

  I'm trying to get a unicorn server to start when the server boots. Now I get the following error sudo: unicorn_rails: command not found I've searched high and low to what could cause this, but I'm afraid I've tapped my limited understanding of Linux. From what I can understand is that although sudo should use the ubuntu user to execute the commands, it still uses the environment of the root user, which isn't configured to run ruby or unicorn. Does anybody have any experience with this?

• Create Advanced Panoramas with Microsoft Image Composite Editor

  Do you enjoy making panoramas with your pictures, but want more features than tools like Live Photo Gallery offer?  Here’s how you can create amazing panoramas for free with the Microsoft Image Composite Editor. Yesterday we took a look at creating panoramic photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Today we take a look at a free tool from Microsoft that will give you more advanced features to create your own masterpiece. Getting Started Download Microsoft Image Composite Editor from Microsoft Research (link below), and install as normal.  Note that there are separate version for 32 & 64-bit editions of Windows, so make sure to download the correct one for your computer. Once it’s installed, you can proceed to create awesome panoramas and extremely large image combinations with it.  Microsoft Image Composite Editor integrates with Live Photo Gallery, so you can create more advanced panoramic pictures directly.  Select the pictures you want to combine, click Extras in the menu bar, and select Create Image Composite. You can also create a photo stitch directly from Explorer.  Select the pictures you want to combine, right-click, and select Stitch Images… Or, simply launch the Image Composite Editor itself and drag your pictures into its editor.  Either way you start a image composition, the program will automatically analyze and combine your images.  This application is optimized for multiple cores, and we found it much faster than other panorama tools such as Live Photo Gallery. Within seconds, you’ll see your panorama in the top preview pane. From the bottom of the window, you can choose a different camera motion which will change how the program stitches the pictures together.  You can also quickly crop the picture to the size you want, or use Automatic Crop to have the program select the maximum area with a continuous picture.   Here’s how our panorama looked when we switched the Camera Motion to Planar Motion 2. But, the real tweaking comes in when you adjust the panorama’s projection and orientation.  Click the box button at the top to change these settings. The panorama is now overlaid with a grid, and you can drag the corners and edges of the panorama to change its shape. Or, from the Projection button at the top, you can choose different projection modes. Here we’ve chosen Cylinder (Vertical), which entirely removed the warp on the walls in the image.  You can pan around the image, and get the part you find most important in the center.  Click the Apply button on the top when you’re finished making changes, or click Revert if you want to switch to the default view settings. Once you’ve finished your masterpiece, you can export it easily to common photo formats from the Export panel on the bottom.  You can choose to scale the image or set it to a maximum width and height as well.  Click Export to disk to save the photo to your computer, or select Publish to Photosynth to post your panorama online. Alternately, from the File menu you can choose to save the panorama as .spj file.  This preserves all of your settings in the Image Composite Editor so you can edit it more in the future if you wish.   Conclusion Whether you’re trying to capture the inside of a building or a tall tree, the extra tools in Microsoft Image Composite Editor let you make nicer panoramas than you ever thought possible.  We found the final results surprisingly accurate to the real buildings and objects, especially after tweaking the projection modes.  This tool can be both fun and useful, so give it a try and let us know what you’ve found it useful for. • SVG as CSS background for website navigation-bar

  I drew a small (horizontal / in width) svg to be the background of my website's navigation. My website's navigation takes place a 100% of the browser's viewport and I want the svg image to fill that 100% space. So, using css I set the background of the navigation (.nav) to nav.svg but then I saw (whenI opened the html file in a browser) that the svg was not the full-width of the nav, but at the small width I drew it at. How can I get the SVG to stretch and fill the entire width of the navigation (100% of the page) ? • Threads to make video out of images

  updates: I think/ suspect the imageIO is not thread safe. shared by all threads. the read() call might use resources that are also shared. Thus it will give the performance of a single thread no matter how many threads used. ? if its correct . what is the solution (in practical code) Single request and response model at one time do not utilizes full network/internet bandwidth, thus resulting in low performance. (benchmark is of half speed utilization or even lower) This is to make a video out of an IP cam that gives a new image on each request. http://149.5.43.10:8001/snapshot.jpg It makes a delay of 3 - 8 seconds no matter what I do. Changed thread no. and thread time intervals, debugged the code by System.out.println statements to see if threads work. All seems normal. Any help? Please show some practical code. You may modify mine.   i want to view tracing events from the Event Tracing for Windows system. As far as i can tell the only client program that exists for connecting to providers is a command line tool that comes with the Microsoft Windows Device Driver Development Kit (DDK), e.g.: tracelog -start "NT Kernel Logger" -f krnl.etl -dpcisr -nodisk -nonet -b 1024 -min 4 -max 16 -ft 10 –UsePerfCounter ... tracelog –stop It then requires a separate command line tool to convert the generated log file into something usable, e.g.: trcerpt krnl.etl -report isrdpc.xml Has nobody come up with a Windows program (ala Performance Monitor, Process Monitor, Event Viewer) that lets me start tracing by pushing a "Go" button, let me see events, and i can stop it with a "Stop" button? Is there GUI for Event Tracing for Windows?

• Syslog - capturing event logs from Win2k boxes

  Hi all, I asked this question in SuperUser without much luck and so I am posting it here to see if anyone can assist. We have a central syslog server and we want it to capture event log events from Windows hosts. We are specifically interested in logging service start/stop events. We installed "Eventlog to Syslog" on these windows hosts and all works well with XP hosts (Events come from Service Control Manager). However, we are having issues with Win2k hosts. For some reason, service start/stop events do not get logged in the Event Log for Win2k hosts. I got another friend from another company to test on a Win2k host and he does get start/stop events on them. I have searched around for local audit policies i need to enable but with not much luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Questions about adding space to an Amazon EC2 Instance

  I have an Amazon EC2 instance that is running a simple LAMP stack with Amazon's flavor of linux. I want to stop it and add more disk space. We will need more than our current 8 gigabytes. I was wondering: 1) When I stop my instance what will be lost? Will the content of /var/www be lost? What does this mean? I am sure my instance isn't a spot instance. 1.5) What is an ephemeral disk? Is my instance completely ephemeral? Are parts of it ephemeral? When I press "stop", probably, not everything is cleared. So what is cleared? 2) Amazon has tools in the Management Console to facilitate enlarging an instance? 3) Will I have to re-partition the instance?   I am trying to setup daemontools for two apaches in one server. one apache 2.2 listening on port 80 proxy request to a second apache 1.3 listening on port 8888. ./run script as following: #!/bin/sh # apache 1.3 exec /apache_1_3/apache/bin/httpd -F #!/bin/sh # apache 2.2 exec /apache_2_2/apache/bin/httpd -D FOREGROUND daemontools monitors both apache fine. however, If I stop apache2.2 (using svc -t or apachectl), the apache 1.3 will see the following error in error_log [crit] (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to port 8888 I had to manually apachectl stop the apache1.3 to stop the error message clobber the log file. There is no such problem before using daemontools. any idea why this is happening?

• Debuggin in Eclipse - Run till breakpoint

  I am trying to debug my java code in eclipse. By using break points and Debug mode, the control hits the break point after which I can use F6 to navigate through my code. Consider I have my break point inside a for loop. In Visual Studio 2005, if we hit Execute (F5), it would stop at next breakpoint. How can I achieve the same in eclipse. Also consider, if I make a change while debugging. So I want to Stop the execution and restart it again from beginning. Like we have Stop Execution in VS 2005. Mainly for those who have extensively used Visual Studio 2005, how does eclipse provide similar functionality.

• systemctl enable differs from systemctl start, how?

  I am running an Arch Linux (latest, up-to-date) box, and attempting to get MySQL to start at boot. With the systemd package installed I have systemctl available, and as such I can do things like this: systemctl start mysqld.service systemctl [stop|status|restart] mysqld.service That's all fine, and works great when I want to start/stop manually, however, when it comes to getting it to start at boot (by using 'enable' on systemctl, I get some nasty output): [root@rudivarch ~]# systemctl enable mysqld.service Failed to issue method call: No such file or directory Obviously, since the other commands work just fine, I'm seriously confused by this and have spent a good while trying to figure it out... systemctl status outputs this: [root@rudivarch ~]# systemctl status mysqld.service mysqld.service Loaded: loaded (/etc/rc.d/mysqld) Active: inactive (dead) since Tue, 31 Jan 2012 15:32:28 +0000; 1min 25s ago Process: 589 ExecStop=/etc/rc.d/mysqld stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 257 ExecStart=/etc/rc.d/mysqld start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/mysqld.service Anybody have any ideas as to why 'enable' doesn't work?

Can someone point me in the right direction ? I've read the documentation , as it is, and it seems kind of sparse for a SysV init replacement... but whatever just need to add this job to the list, run it, and get on with what's left of my life... • W3SVC service stopping error

  Hi, I have a web server ( IIS 7.5 , windows 2008 64 Bit web server ed) and notice that in last few days all web sites on server stopped and cant browser by visitor. I check the event log but I didnt see any things related to this problem. When I try to restart IIS i got error on W3SVC serivce.When IIS try to STOP it, W3SVC goes to stopping state and never stop. so I can't start it again. I try and find that I never can restart the W3SVC and when IIS work fine if I try to restart this service, it goes to stopping and never stop. 1- how can I find the problem on IIS? ( i have several asp.net app host on it ) 2- how can I fix W3SVC service stopping problem? Thanks Mehdi

• Prevent users from creating / copying / moving anything except .exe

  We have a program that compiles executables into a folder into c:\bin. Ideally I would like to share this folder so users can access the exe's within but stop them creating any other files in there. The reason for this is to stop users grabbing source code and putting it in a shared drive then taking it. We have a Domain Controller setup and all the users belong to a specific security group. Is there any way to achieve this? EDIT: TO clarify, I need to stop users from creating or moving files INTO the C:\bin folder which are not executables.

• what's the difference between /etc/init.d/sshd start and /usr/sbin/sshd?

  I'm having issues with passwordless ssh. I've checked, double checked and checked again that I have everything set up correctly. Both machines are RHEL6 and when the destination machine first boots up passwordless ssh does not work. If I stop ssh (service sshd stop or /ect/init.d/sshd stop) and then start it directly (/usr/sbin/sshd) passwordless ssh works fine. If I start ssh via the service (service sshd start or /etc/init.d/sshd start) passwordless ssh does not work. Just for testing I've tried commenting out the entire start() function in /etc/init.d/sshd and replace it with /usr/sbin/sshd - that still fails to allow passwordless ssh. I believe that this means that something in the /etc/init.d/sshd file is causing the screw up but I don't know enough about linux to narrow the issue down.

  I have four windows services which start up automatically when the machine starts. There after, I want to restart those services every 8 hours in a particular order. For eg. Stop s1,s2,s3,s4 and than restart them in some other order like s4,s3,s2,s1. The condition is that I should wait for each service to stop completely before I stop another one. I would want to write a .BAT or some script. Is it possible to define a CRON for 8 hours, this is not there in Advanced tasks ? Can I do it using windows scheduler ? Please suggest. thanks in advance.

• Use Amazon EC2 as a backup server

  I would like to use Amazon EC2 as an emergency backup database+web server in the event our primary host becomes unavailable. I feel like I wouldn't have trouble setting up a Windows instance, install SQL Server and get the web server up and running (would take a few hours, plus installing various libraries, our source code, etc). My question relates to pricing. If I simply "stop" the instance rather than "terminate" it, does that stop counting "instance-hours"? I would prefer not to terminate the instance and lose all that work I spent setting it up. If I must "terminate" in order to stop the billing - is it possible to make an image of the server after I have set it all up, then save that image somewhere (S3?) Is this something that people do regularly? Ideally this instance would just be waiting in the wings for an issue with our host, but costing us nothing except perhaps data storage costs.

• initctl respawn does not reload configuration

  My upstart service is running with the respawn option. I was hoping that if I deploy a new service config, the config will be loaded, when the service respawns. Neither the initctl reload-configuration command forces a reload, nor the restart command. Only an explicit stop and start reloads the configuration. The problem is, that I can not stop and start the service, at deploy time. The service itself schedules its restart by just shutting down. Is this behavior by design or am I missing something? Would it change anything, if I did the respawn with a second watchdog-service by an explicit start if my service stops? Why is there a difference between an explicit start/stop and the restart command or respawn option. Thanks.

• SharePoint 3.0 Search Stuck Starting

  I have a single server running SharePoint 3.0 on WS2003 Sp2 not on a domain. My search service stopped working so I just went in to central admin and hit stop, then hit start. I soon found out this is not the way to do this process. I now can not get the search service to start again. I have tried everything I can think of, and nothing works it changes status to Starting but never gets to started. I have to go in with "stsadm -o spsearch -action stop" from the command prompt to stop it. I am using the Local service account for the service and the content accounts. Can anyone help me?

• C# Bind DataTable to Existing DataGridView Column Definitions

  I've been struggling with a NullReferenceException and hope someone here will be able to point me in the right direction. I'm trying to create and populate a DataTable and then show the results in a DataGridView control. The basic code follows, and Execution stops with a NullReferenceException at the point where I invoke the new UpdateResults_Delegate. I am refactoring old code that retrieved records from a database, collected those records as an array, and then later iterated through the array to populate a DataGridView row by row. Threading was originally implemented to compensate and keep the UI responsive during the unnecessary looping. I have since stripped out Thread/Invoke; everything now occurs on the same execution thread (thank you, Sam). I am attempting to replace the slow, unwieldy approach using a DataTable which I can fill with a DataAdapter, and assign to the DataGridView through it's DataSource property (above code updated). I've iterated through the entries DataTable's rows to verify the table contains the expected data before assigning it as the DataGridView's DataSource. foreach (DataRow row in entries.Rows) { System.Diagnostics.Trace.WriteLine( String.Format("{0} {1} {2}", row[0], row[1], row[2])); } One of the column of the DataGridView is a custom DataGridViewColumn to stylize the event_type value. I have converted this column temporarily to a standard DataGridViewTextBoxColumn control and am no longer experiencing the Exception. The fields in the DataTable are appended to the list of fields that have been pre-specified in Design view of the DataGridView. The records' values are being populated in these appended fields. When the run time attempts to render the cell a null value is provided (as the value that should be rendered is done so a couple columns over). In light of this, I am re-titling and re-tagging the question. I would still appreciate it if others who have experienced this can instruct me on how to go about binding the DataTable to the existing column definitions of the DataGridView.
